Dodgers activate Cody Bellinger

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers activated outfielder Cody Bellinger from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Andy Burns to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Bellinger, 25, returns after missing seven games on the injured list with left hamstring tightness. On the season, the outfielder has missed 53 games and has had two stints on the injured list. He has appeared in 16 games, batting .226 (14-for-62) with one double, one homer and 10 RBI. The 2019 National League MVP has been with the Dodgers five seasons, batting a combined .272 with 99 doubles, 124 homers and 328 RBI. The 2017 National League Rookie of the Year was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft out of Hamilton High School.

Burns, 30, made eight appearances for the Dodgers, batting .273 (3-for-11) with three walks and two runs scored. He recorded his first Major League hit in his Dodger debut on June 12 against the Rangers. In his minor league career, he has hit a combined .268 (754-for-2811) with 79 homers and 366 RBI across eight seasons. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 11th round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Arizona.

* A combination of youth and veterans powered Montreal to a 3-2 lead in its Stanley Cup Semifinals series, which shifts back to Bell Centre for Game 6.

* Lou Lamoriello won the 2020-21 Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award, with voting for the honor conducted among NHL general managers and a panel of League executives, print and broadcast media at the conclusion of the Second Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

YOUTH, VETERANS VAULT VISITORS TO VICTORY IN VEGAS
Nick Suzuki had 1-2—3 while Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Cole Caufield and Eric Staal also scored for the Canadiens, who received a 26-save effort from Carey Price to defeat the Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena and move within one win of their first Stanley Cup Final berth since 1993. Montreal improved to 7-2 as visitors in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs and matched its most road wins in a single postseason, a mark set in 1989 (7-3).

* Suzuki (5-8—13 in 16 GP) ranks second in team scoring this postseason with 13 points, one back of Tyler Toffoli (5-9—14 in 16 GP) who had two assists Tuesday. The only player in franchise history with more in a playoff year before age 22 is Claude Lemieux in 1986 (10-6—16 in 20 GP).

* Kotkaniemi (9-2—11 in 25 GP) scored the ninth playoff goal of his NHL career and first since Game 1 of the Second Round. Only seven players in League history have had more before age 21, a cohort which includes Lemieux (10-6—16 in 20 GP) as well as Staal’s younger brother, Jordan (13-6—19 in 49 GP).

* Caufield (3-5—8 in 14 GP) has found the score sheet in six of his last seven contests dating to Game 3 of the Second Round and became the first Canadiens rookie with eight or more points in a postseason since P.K. Subban had an equal amount in 2010 (1-7—8 in 14 GP).

* Staal became the first Montreal player age 36 or older with a goal in a Conference Finals/Semifinals game since 2014, when Francis Bouillon and Daniel Briere each had one in the Canadiens’ series against the Rangers. Staal (36 years, 236 days) is the oldest Montreal player with a winning goal during a final-four series since Jimmy Roberts (37 years, 17 days) in Game 2 of the 1977 Semifinals.

LAMORIELLO WINS JIM GREGORY GENERAL MANAGER OF THE YEAR AWARD
Lou Lamoriello of the Islanders is the 2020-21 recipient of the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award. The honor is named after the late Jim Gregory, a 2007 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee who served as Maple Leafs general manager and a League executive for four decades.

LIGHTNING LOOK FOR ANOTHER FINAL BERTH; ISLANDERS AIM TO FORCE GAME 7
Tampa Bay and New York clash at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum tonight, with the defending champions looking to clinch their second straight berth in the Final (and fourth in franchise history) and the Islanders aiming to force the third Game 7 of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

* Brayden Point, who carries the second longest playoff goal streak in NHL history into Wednesday, has scored three series clinchers since the start of the 2020 postseason (Game 5 of 2020 R1, Game 6 of 2020 SCF & Game 5 of 2021 R2). He can become the second player in League history with four series-clinching goals over a span of two NHL playoffs, joining Ken Linseman from 1983 to 1984 (w/ EDM).

* Andrei Vasilevskiy, who blanked New York in Game 5, has recorded three consecutive series-clinching shutouts (Game 6 of 2020 SCF, Game 6 of 2021 R1 & Game 5 of 2021 R2) which is the longest such run by a goaltender in NHL history. He can become the first goaltender in League history with three in a single playoff year.

* Travis Zajac (1-5—6 in 10 GP) leads current Islanders players with six career points in potential elimination games, highlighted by a 1-1—2 outing in Game 6 of the 2012 Conference Quarterfinals which included scoring the overtime winner (w/ NJD). New Jersey, which also had Andy Greene as a defenseman and Lou Lamoriello as its general manager, went on to reach the Stanley Cup Final that year.

* Tonight marks the 22nd all-time contest at Nassau Coliseum in which the Islanders face elimination, with New York yielding a 16-5 record in the 21 previous games (.762 W%). The last such contest was in Game 6 of the 2015 First Round, where current Islanders Nick Leddy (0-2—2) and Cal Clutterbuck (1-0—1) combined for three points in a 3-1 win over the Capitals.

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC and defender Tim Parker have agreed to a contract extension through the 2024 season, the Club announced today.

 

“Tim has solidified himself within our group from day one, both on and off the field through his performances, strong character and leadership ability,” said Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan. “Tim is in the prime of his career and we couldn’t be happier that he has chosen to be a part of our club and what we are building in Houston as a foundational piece of our group for years to come.”

 

The Dynamo acquired Parker earlier this year on Jan. 19 from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for $450,000 in General Allocation Money with additional performance-based incentives. Parker was named co-captain in April and has worn the captain’s armband three times this season. The New York native has started in all nine games for the Dynamo this season and currently leads the team in blocks with seven and clearances with 26.

 

“Tim was the first player we went after at the end of last season as we looked to improve and rebuild,” Dynamo head coach Tab Ramos said. “His professional winning character has already made us better on-and-off the field. We are excited that he has accepted to continue to grow with the club and with the city of Houston.”

 

The six-year MLS veteran joined Houston after three consecutive appearances in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs with the Red Bulls. Parker finished with 79 appearances for the Red Bulls and helped the club claim the 2018 Supporter’s Shield with a record 71 points, while helping anchor the defense that recorded a league-best 14 shoutouts while setting a record with 71 points earned during that same season.

 

“I’m beyond ecstatic to commit to this project in Houston for the next three years. There is so much momentum around the club and I’m thrilled to play a role in the future of the organization,” Parker said. “That’s both on and off the field, we want to build meaningful relationships with our fans, that goes beyond the 90 minutes we play over the weekend. We have to do our part and I look forward to stepping up and connect with everyone who identifies with this badge.”

 

Parker qualified to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs twice with the Vancouver Whitecaps, beginning with his rookie season in 2015. The defender returned to the postseason in 2017 after starting in 32 regular season games and finished the season with Jock MacDonald Unsung Hero honors for the ‘Caps.

 

Internationally, the defender has earned two caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team. Parker made his debut with the USMNT against Ireland on June 2, 2018 and started in the following game against France on June 9. He also represented the U.S. at the U-23 and U-18 level, competing in the playoffs to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

 

Parker played collegiately for St. John’s University and finished with 79 appearances in his four years for the Red Storm. He was a three-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection and earned first team All-Big East Honors in 2013. The defender was also a Big East All-Rookie selection following his freshmen season and won the 2011 Big East Tournament. He signed for the Big Red after earning Gatorade New York Boys Soccer Player of the Year honors in 2011.

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC return to BBVA Stadium this evening to host the Portland Timbers for Soccer For All Night. Wednesday’s game is the second of three matches over an eight-day stretch following the international break.

 

Houston opened the three-game stretch on the road with a 1-1 draw against Los Angeles Football Club on Saturday. Maxi Urruti won the ball near midfield to spark the equalizer. The Argentine forward found Fafa Picault in space and the New York native dribbled past two defenders to find Urruti near the penalty spot for the equalizer. Picault tallied his third assist of the season and back-to-back assists for the Dynamo over a two-game stretch. Urruti also scored in his second consecutive game and leads the team in goals with five.

 

Houston looks to split the series with Portland on Wednesday after dropping the first meeting 2-1 in April. Tyler Pasher forced an own goal, but Houston’s push fell short at Providence Park. The Dynamo also look to snap a three-game losing streak against the Timbers that began in June 2019. Houston’s last victory in the series came at home with a 4-1 triumph on Sept. 15, 2018. The Dynamo enter the game with a 4-0-4 record against Portland at home.

 

The Timbers have won three out of their last four games this season and enter the match with a 4-4-0 record. Portland struggled at the beginning of the season as the Timbers navigated the Round of 16 and quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions League. The Timbers defeated Sporting Kansas City 2-1 on Saturday and that match marked the return of Sebastian Blanco. The Argentine playmaker missed six months due to a torn ACL suffered in 2020.

 

The Dynamo will travel this weekend to Utah to close the three-game stretch. Kickoff against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m. CT.

 

Here are three key points ahead of tonight’s game:

 

  1. DYNAMO WELCOME NEW MAJORITY OWNER & CHAIRMAN TED SEGAL: The Club announced Ted Segal as the new Majority Owner and Chairman yesterday at the Lexus Club in BBVA Stadium. Segal will attend BBVA Stadium for the first time as the Club’s Majority owner when the Dynamo take on Portland. “I’m going to throw myself into (making the Club successful) and work hard with both leagues to implement best practices, and all I can say is you have my commitment that I will be an active and involved owner in giving our organization the resources it has to succeed,” said Segal.
  2. DYNAMO LOOK TO SPLIT SERIES WITH TIMBERS: This is the second meeting of the season between both teams and the Timbers edged past Houston 2-1 at Providence Park in April. The Timbers enter the game in fifth place, two spots higher than the Dynamo in the Western Conference and look to build on their victory over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. The Dynamo look to remain unbeaten at home this season and against the Timbers, Houston enter the game with a 4-0-4 record against Portland in Houston.

TIM PARKER RE-SIGNS WITH HOUSTON: A leader on and off the field, Dynamo defender Tim Parker signed a three-year extension earlier this week that will see him with the Club through 2024. The New York native joined the Dynamo in January 2021 and has since been a key piece in Houston’s backline. Parker has started in all nine appearances for Houston, wearing the captain’s armband three times since joining this season. “Tim is in the prime of his career and we couldn’t be happier that he has chosen to be a part of our club and what we are building in Houston as a foundational piece of our group for years to come,” said Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan.

HOUSTON – The 2021 Houston Dynamo FC Unified Team, presented by 76®, will sign their official Club contracts and receive their official uniforms on Thursday, June 24 at BBVA Stadium. The signing ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. CDT in the Lexus Club at BBVA Stadium.

 

This is the sixth year that the Club, Special Olympics Texas and 76 partners together for the MLS Unified Season. Dynamo president John Walker will join the players for their contract signings and Dynamo players Memo Rodriguez and Michael Nelson will present the Unified Team with their uniforms.

The contract signing on Thursday is just the start of a busy summer for the Dynamo FC Unified Team.  They will play three matches this year, including a game on August 21 against FC Dallas and then travel to the State Capitol to participate in a small tournament against Austin FC and FC Dallas, later this fall.

 

The Unified Team signing day is part of the Houston Dynamo FC and the Houston Dash’s’ Soccer For All Week. Soccer for All is a yearlong initiative focused on providing opportunities in the sport of soccer for everyone, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status, and emphasizes the League’s commitment to drive positive social change, foster more inclusive and equitable communities and end discrimination.

 

Other activities this week will include Houston Dynamo FC players wearing special Pride themed warm-up tops prior to the match later today as well as a pre-game recognition of the Lone Star Amputee Soccer team that is supported by Houston Dynamo FC and the Houston Dash.  The Dash will wear Pride themed numbers on their jerseys during their match on Saturday vs the Orland Pride.  The week will conclude with an auction from Dynamo Charities to help raise funds to support underserved soccer communities in the Houston area.

New York Islanders’ Barzal Fined for Cross-Checking

NEW YORK – New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for cross-checking Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Jan Rutta during Game 5 of the teams’ Semifinals series in Tampa on Monday, June 21, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

 

The incident occurred at 20:00 of the second period. Barzal was assessed a major penalty for cross-checking and a game misconduct.

 

The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Gilberto Celestino recalled from Triple-A St. Paul

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed outfielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day Injured List with a left hand fracture.

Buxton, who returned from his rehab assignment and was reinstated from the 10-day Injured List on Saturday (right hip strain), suffered the injury last night after being hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. Buxton has hit .369 (38-for-103) with 11 doubles, 10 home runs, 19 RBI, 21 runs scored, a .767 slugging percentage and a 1.176 OPS in 27 games this season. He had gone 4-for-11 (.364) with a double, a home run and two RBI in three games since his recent return.

To replace Buxton on the 26-man roster, the Twins have recalled outfielder Gilberto Celestino from Triple-A St. Paul. Celestino, who was optioned to St. Paul on Friday, has hit .125 (4-for-32) with one double, one home run and one RBI in 10 games for the Twins this season.

White Sox place Adam Engel on injured list; recall Luis González from Class AAA Charlotte

PTTSBURGH – Prior to tonight’s series opener at Pittsburgh, the Chicago White Sox placed outfielder Adam Engel on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 20) with a strained right hamstring and recalled outfielder Luis González from Class AAA Charlotte.

González, 26, is hitting .195 (16-82) with three doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI, 13 runs scored and five stolen bases in 24 games with Charlotte. He made his only appearance with the White Sox this season as a defensive replacement on April 29 vs. Detroit. González made his major-league debut with Chicago in 2020, and is 0-1 with a run scored in four career games.

Engel, 29, is batting .241 (7-29) with three home runs, four RBI and five runs scored in 10 games this season, his fifth with the White Sox. He began the 2021 season on the injured list with a strained right hamstring and made his season debut on June 6.

Boston recalls catcher Connor Wong from Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA  – The Boston Red Sox today placed catcher Kevin Plawecki on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to yesterday) with a left hamstring strain. To fill Plawecki’s spot on the active major league roster, the Red Sox recalled catcher Connor Wong from Triple-A Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Plawecki, 30, was removed from Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals in the fourth inning due to left hamstring tightness. He has made 18 starts at catcher and one at designated hitter this season, batting .254 (16-for-63) with one home run and a .668 OPS.

Wong, 25, is making his first appearance on an active major league roster. Acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers on February 10, 2020, the right-handed hitter split the 2020 season between the Red Sox’ Alternate Training Site and the taxi squad. In 16 games with Worcester this season—his first experience at the Triple-A level—he has hit .148 (9-for-61) with one home run, making 15 starts at catcher and one at second base. Ranked the Red Sox’ No. 16 prospect by MLB.com, Wong has thrown out seven of the 11 runners attempting to steal against him in 2021 (63.6%).

Twins claim Beau Burrows off waivers from Detroit

Right-hander will report to Triple-A St. Paul

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN — The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Beau Burrows off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

Burrows, 24, made his major league debut on July 27, 2020 and appeared in six major league games for the Tigers from 2020-21, posting an 8.64 ERA (8.1 IP, 3 ER) with three walks, six strikeouts and a 1.56 WHIP. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Burrows was selected by Detroit in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Weatherford (TX) High School.

Burrows will report to Triple-A St. Paul and will join the Saints in Columbus, where they are due to start a six-game series against the Clippers tonight.
