Undefeated Texan battles Yeison Vargas

 

Weston, Florida – Tonight at The Bonaventure Resort Spa in Weston, Florida, undefeated featherweight Edward Vazquez will be back in action when he takes on Yeison Vargas in a six-round bout.

 

Vazquez of Fort Worth, Texas, has a record of 9-0 with one knockout. The 25 year-old Vazquez is managed by DKO Management, will be making his first start since winning an eight-round split decision over Irvin Gonzalez (14-2) on November 28th in Las Angeles to capture the WBC USNBC Title.

 

Vazquez also has wins over Everado Jhoao (1-0), Brandon Arvie (2-0), Brandon Cruz (6-0) and Adan Ochoa (11-1).

 

Vargas of Colombia is 16-6 with 11 knockouts.

 

Vargas, 30, has wins over Ramiro Rojas (12-1-1) and Sander Diaz (5-1-1).

 

Vargas’ six losses are to fighters with a combined record of 116-5-4

NEW YORK – On Saturday, boxing’s top management company, Split-T Management will have four of it’s top fighters featured in bouts throughout North America.

 

At the Virgin Hotel In Las Vegas, undefeated welterweight Giovani Santillan battles Cecil McCalla in a 10-round bout.

 

In Guadalajara, Mexico, rising undefeated prospect Diego Pacheco takes on undefeated Jesus Palomares in an eight-round super middleweight fight.

 

In Ashland, Kentucky, world-ranked super welterweight Charles Cinwell takes on Silverio Ortiz, while Haven Brady Jr. takes on Nathan Benichou in a four-round featherweight bout.

 

Santillan, who is promoted by Thompson Boxing and Top Rank, has a record 26-0 with 15 knockouts. Santillan of San Diego, has wins over Michael Balasi (10-2), Daniyar Hanyk (10-0), Osenohan Vazquez (7-1-1), Eduardo Rivera (9-1-2), Ernesto Ortiz (10-2), Omar Tienda (18-3), Sammy Valentin (12-0), Dodzi Kemeh (19-1), Alejandro Barboza (11-1) and his last bout when defeated former world champion Antonio DeMarco on June 16, 2020 in Las Vegas.

 

McCalla of Randallstown, Maryland, has a record of 23-4 with 10 knockouts.

 

McCalla has defeated the likes of Ivan Zigar (1-0-1), Antonio Walls (2-0), John Mackey (11-2-1), Gary Lynch (4-0) and Oscar Godoy (13-2). McCalla has won two in a row, and is coming off of a 2nd round stoppage over Fidel Monterrosa Munoz on October 16th in Plant City, Florida.

 

Santillan weighed 147.6 lbs and McCalla was 147 lbs at Friday’s weigh-in.

 

The bout can be seen on ESPN+ at 7:15 PM.

 

Pacheco of Los Angeles is 11-0 with eight knockouts.

 

The 20 year-old Pacheco will be facing his 5th undefeated foe of his three-year career. He already has wins over Felix Aguilar, Guillermo Maldonado, Jose Esparza and Terry Ferandez. Pacheco also has a 2nd round stoppage over Juan Antonio Mendez (12-2). Pacheco is coming off a unanimous decision over Rodolfo Gomez Jr. on February 21st in Miami.

 

Palomares of Sonora, Mexico is 7-0-1 with four knockouts, and has defeated two undefeated opponents in his last two bouts. He has a 2nd round stoppage over Christian Hermosillo (3-0) and in his last bout Palomares won a unanimous decision over Jaime Portillo on November 19th in Sonora, Mexico.

 

Both Pacheco and Palomares were 167 lbs at Friday’s weigh-in

 

In Ashland, Kentucky Conwell and Brady were able to book fights following bouts being postponed in Miami.

 

Conwell of Cleveland is ranked number-seven by the IBF, has a record of 14-0 with 11 knockouts,

 

The 2016 United States Olympian is the USBA champion, who has made three defenses has wins over Roque Zeoeda (4-1-3), Travis Scott (19-3), His USBA title winning effort over Courtney Pennington (12-3-3) and defenses over undefeated Webdy Toussaint (12-0) and Madiyar Ashkeyev (14-0).

 

Conwell, who is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Holden Productions checked in at 158 lbs.

 

Ortiz of Yucitan, Mexico has a record of 37-26 with 18 knockouts, and is a 21 year veteran,

 

He has fought many world champions and title challengers and has sprung upsets over Daniel Seda, Miguel Angel Huerta, Mian Hussein and Ramzan Baysarov

 

Brady of Albany, Georgia is 2-0 with both wins coming via knockout. He weighed 128 lbs.

 

The 19 year-old Brady, who is promoted by Top Rank, is coming off a 2nd round stoppage over Michael Land on December 12th in Las Vegas.

 

Benichou of Puebla, Mexico has a record of 2-4 with two knockouts.

Danny Coulombe contract selected from Triple-A St. Paul

 

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell on the 10-day Injured List with a right oblique strain, retroactive to June 23.

 

Farrell has appeared in 13 games for the Twins this season, going 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA (15.1 IP, 3 ER), six walks and 17 strikeouts.

 

To replace Farrell on the 26-man roster, the Twins have selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Danny Coulombe from Triple-A St. Paul. Coulombe appeared in 14 games for the Saints this season, going 1-1 with a 1.77 ERA (20.1 IP, 4 ER), three walks and 27 strikeouts, including scoreless appearances in each of his last seven outings. The 31-year-old pitched in two games for the Twins in 2020, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings in late August.

 

Additionally, the Twins have transferred right-handed pitcher Cody Stashak (left back disc injury) to the 60-day Injured List.

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC close a three-game stretch on Saturday on the road against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Dynamo enter Saturday’s game with back-to-back draws after Wednesday’s midweek clash with the Portland Timbers at BBVA Stadium.

 

Dynamo defender Maynor Figueroa tallied his first assist of the season when he headed a ball toward goal that bounced off forward Fafa Picault’s head for the opening goal of the game. Picault sparked the second goal when he found Matias Vera late in the opening half of the match. Vera filtered a ball to forward Tyler Pasher inside the box for his second goal of the year. Houston was limited to one shot on target in the second half as a late strike from Jeremy Ebobisse gave the visiting side a split of the points. Picault will be unavailable for Saturday’s match due to yellow card accumulation.

 

The Dynamo return to national television for the fourth time this season and enter Saturday’s game with a 0-0-3 record on national TV. Houston’s last match on national TV was the 1-1 draw with Los Angeles Football Club last Saturday.

 

The Dynamo return to BBVA Stadium on July 3 to host FC Cincinnati in their first full capacity game since Feb. 29, 2020. Here are three key points ahead of Saturday’s game:

POSSESSION IMPROVES AFTER CHALLENGING STRETCH: The Dynamo held the ball for nearly 50 percent (49.5 percent) of the game on Wednesday, snapping a four-game stretch where the team was limited to less than 40 percent of the possession in the game. Houston posted 1-2-1 record in that stretch and head coach Tab Ramos looks to improve Houston’s ability to dictate the pace of the game.

ROAD POINTS KEY FOR DYNAMO PUSH: The Dynamo will play on the road in four of their next five games beginning with Saturday’s match. Houston currently sits in sixth place in the Western Conference with 13 points. Of those 13 points, 11 points were won at BBVA Stadium. Houston will look to earn their first road victory of the season and build momentum for their largest stretch of the regular season away from EaDo.

SALT LAKE LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK AT HOME:  Real Salt Lake have one victory in their last five games and a 1-1-3 record since May 15. Salt Lake was minutes away from securing a point on the road against Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday, but a late second half penalty cost Salt Lake a share of the points. The team currently sits in seventh place and hold a 2-1-2 record at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Earthquakes Acquire Brazilian Defender Nathan

Nathan joins San Jose via permanent transfer from Swiss club FC Zurich

 

SAN JOSE, Calif. –  The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has acquired Brazilian center back Nathan Cardoso, known simply as Nathan, from Swiss club FC Zurich and signed him to a three-year contract (2021-23) with a club option for 2024 using Targeted Allocation Money, pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and ITC.

 

“Reinforcing our defense was a priority and we are excited to add Nathan to our roster as we approach a dense schedule with more than two-thirds of the regular season still to play,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. “We believe Nathan’s age and skillset complements the qualities we have in our back line. We really like his athleticism and aerial game as well as the experience he accumulated both in Brazil and Switzerland. We would like to thank Nathan, his brother, Victor, and FC Zurich for their efforts to finalize his transfer to San Jose ahead of the summer window.”

 

Nathan, 26, has competed for Switzerland’s FC Zurich since July 2019. He appeared in 63 matches for the Swiss side across the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, tallying three goals and one assist.

 

Nathan began his career at the youth ranks of Palmeiras in his native Brazil. After breaking into the first team, Nathan was sent out on consecutive loans to Brazilian sides Criciuma EC (2016) and Chapecoense (2017). Nathan was among the group of players loaned to Chapecoense to rebuild the squad following the team’s plane crash in November 2016 that killed 71 people associated with the club.

 

After returning to Palmeiras, Nathan was sent out on loan twice more, first joining Servette FC (2017-18) and later Grasshopper (2018-19), both in Switzerland. He scored three goals in 29 appearances to lead Servette FC to a championship in the nation’s second division and earn promotion to the Swiss Super League. The following year, he scored one goal in 10 appearances for Grasshopper of the top flight.

 

Nathan then made a permanent move to Switzerland, signing with FC Zurich in July 2019.

 

Internationally, Nathan competed for Brazil at the 2015 South American U-20 Championship and helped lead his team to a fourth-place finish at the 10-team competition.

A’s place OF Canha on 10-day injured list; recall IF Machín from Las Vegas

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s placed outfielder Mark Canha on the 10-day injured list with a left hip strain and recalled infielder Vimael Machín from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

 

Canha is batting .255 (69-for-271) with 12 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs, 13 hit-by-pitches, and 33 RBI in 74 games. He is batting .276 (21-for-76) with 18 RBI in 18 games in June and is tied for third in the American League in runs scored (55), tied for first in triples (4) and tied for fifth in games (73). Canha has made 71 of his 72 starts batting leadoff and started games at four different positions this year: left field (42), center field (21), right field (5), and designated hitter (4).

 

Machín joins the A’s for the second time this year. He was recalled from Las Vegas on April 16 and went 1-for-20 with a run and two walks in nine appearances before being optioned on May 14. He made three appearances at second base, two at third and three at shortstop. Machín is hitting .300 (36-for-120) with seven doubles, three triples, three home runs and 28 RBI in 31 games with Las Vegas.
