Washington Nationals recall Andrew Stevenson

The Washington Nationals recalled outfielder Andrew Stevenson from Triple-A Rochester and optioned right-handed pitcher Andres Machado on Monday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

 

Stevenson, 27, was returned from rehab assignment and reinstated from the 10-day Injured List before being optioned to Triple-A Rochester on July 10. He has a .500/.522/.818 slash line in six games since rejoining the Red Wings with a double, two homers, six RBI, one walk, one stolen base and five runs scored. Stevenson served as Washington’s 27th man on Sunday, was returned following that game prior to today’s recall.

 

In 54 games with Washington prior to injury, he hit .227 with two doubles, two homers, 10 RBI, six walks and 14 runs scored. His .350 (7-for-20) batting average as a pinch hitter ranked fifth in the National League.

 

Machado, 28, has pitched to a 6.35 ERA (4 ER/5.2 IP) with eight strikeouts in six appearances out of Washington’s bullpen this season.

Beau Burrows optioned to Triple-A St. Paul, Griffin Jax added as 27th man

 

CHICAGO, IL – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have reinstated left-handed pitcher Danny Coulombe from the Paternity List.

 

Coulombe and his wife, Lauren, recently welcomed their second son, Thomas. The southpaw had his contract selected from Triple-A St. Paul on June 25 and has appeared in six games (1 start) for the Twins this season, going 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA (8.0 IP, 1 ER), one walk and 11 strikeouts.

 

To make room for Coulombe on the 26-man roster, the Twins have optioned right-handed pitcher Beau Burrows to Triple-A St. Paul. Burrows, who was recalled on Saturday, made one scoreless appearance in the first game of that day’s doubleheader in Detroit, working 1.1 innings and allowing two hits while striking out one batter.

 

Additionally, the Twins will add right-handed pitcher Griffin Jax to the roster as the 27th man for today’s doubleheader. The 26-year-old has gone 1-1 with an 8.66 ERA (17.2 IP, 17 ER), eight walks and 14 strikeouts in five games (1 start) for the Twins this season. Jax will start game one today, making his second career major league start.

Twins return Mitch Garver from rehab assignment and reinstate him from 10-day injured list

CHICAGO, IL – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have returned catcher Mitch Garver from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 10-day Injured List.

 

Garver has missed the Twins’ last 39 games recovering from a groin contusion, after being placed on the Injured List on June 2. He played in four games on rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul, going 4-for-16 (.250) with two RBI, three runs scored and two walks. Garver hit .224 (26-for-116) with eight doubles, eight home runs, 17 RBI, 17 runs scored, a .333 on-base percentage and an .833 OPS in 41 games for the Twins prior to sustaining the injury on June 1 in Baltimore.

 

To make room for Garver on the 26-man roster, the Twins have optioned catcher Ben Rortvedt to Triple-A St. Paul. Rortvedt appeared in 29 games across two stints for the Twins this season, batting .129 (9-for-70) with one double, two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored. He also threw out five would-be base stealers and posted a 46.2 caught stealing percentage.

Royals sign three more Draft picks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals announced tonight that they have signed 15 of their 21 selections in last week’s 2021 First-Year Player Draft, adding three more to the list tonight.

 

The most recent signees include right-handed pitcher Ben Kudrna (2nd round, 43rd overall), right-handed pitcher Shane Panzini (4th round/108th overall) and shortstop Ryan Cepero (8th round/229th overall).

 

Kudrna is a graduate of nearby Blue Valley Southwest High School (KS), where he was 9-1 with a 0.99 ERA during his senior season earning Gatorade State High School Player of the Year honors. Panzini posted a 9-0 mark with a 0.91 ERA as a senior at Red Bank Catholic High School (NJ), while recording a single-season record 115 strikeouts. Cepero, a native of Arecibo, PR, was selected out of the Carlos Beltrán Baseball Academy. He hit .357 in 10 games with the Trenton Thunder of the MLB Draft League.

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC return to league play on Tuesday when they visit the Vancouver Whitecaps at Rio Tinto Stadium.

 

Defenders Dorsey Griffin and Teenage Hadebe will be eligible on Tuesday after joining the Dynamo prior to the transfer window. Houston will travel to Utah without five players currently with their national team at the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. Darwin Ceren, Maynor Figueroa, Boniek Garcia, Ari Lassiter and Tyler Pasher will represent their national team later this weekend in the beginning of the tournament knockout round.

 

Houston will look to bounce back after falling 2-0 to Seattle Sounders FC on July 7. The Sounders snapped a four-game unbeaten run for the Dynamo who enter Tuesday’s game in search of their first victory away from home. Tuesday’s game is also the first of two road games this weekend as Houston travel to Northern California this weekend.

 

Vancouver will host the Dynamo in what is expected to be the final home match at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Whitecaps will be the third and final team to return to Canada after MLS announced the Toronto FC and Club de Foot Montreal would return to Canada earlier this week. The Whitecaps look to build on their 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday in Utah. A second half push from Deiber Caicedo and Cristian Dajome gave the Whitecaps their third victory of the season and first since a May 8 triumph over Montreal.

 

The Dynamo look to sweep the series after winning the first meeting of the regular season 2-1 at BBVA Stadium. Memo Rodriguez and Maxi Urruti found the back of the net in Houston’s third victory of the season.

Here are three key points ahead of Tuesday’s game:

 

  1. HOUSTON WELCOMES NEW FACES: Dynamo defenders Teenage Hadebe and Griffin Dorsey will be eligible on Tuesday and both players would make their debut if they enter the game. Hadebe joined the Dynamo for his first official training session on July 2 after a five-day quarantine period due to international travel. The Zimbabwe international will play his first competitive game since May 15 when Yeni Malatyaspor closed the season against Galatasaray. Dorsey is a familiar face for the technical staff who invited the defender to Houston in May after he was waived by Toronto FC. Dorsey also previously played under Dynamo head coach Tab Ramos with the U-20 U.S. Men’s National Team.

 

  1. FIVE DYNAMO PLAYERS REMAIN ON NATIONAL TEAM DUTY: All five Dynamo players currently on international duty at the 2021 Gold Cup advanced to the quarterfinals this weekend and will miss Houston’s two-game stretch against Vancouver and San Jose. Tyler Pasher and Canada finished second in Group B and will travel to Arlington to join Ari Lassiter and Costa Rica at AT&T Stadium. Darwin Ceren and El Salvador will join Boniek Garcia, Maynor Figueroa and Honduras in Arizona for the second quarterfinal doubleheader on July 25.

 

  1. VANCOUVER BOUNCES BACK: The Whitecaps look to end their run at Rio Tinto Stadium with back-to-back victories after defeating the LA Galaxy 2-1 on Saturday. Vancouver has faced a challenging start to the season with the worst goal difference in the conference and tied for the most goals allowed with 23. Defensively, the Whitecaps will look to Ranko Veselinovic to limit Maxi Urruti, Fafa Picault and Memo Rodriguez. Offensively, Cristian Dajome leads the team with five goals and scored the game-winner against the Galaxy.

Lightning sign Defenseman Fredrik Claersson to one-year contract

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenseman Fredrik Claesson to a one-year, two-way contract today, vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois announced.

 

Claesson, 28, played in two games with the Lightning after being acquired from the San Jose Sharks on April 12, 2021.  Prior to the trade he skated in four games with the Sharks, posting three shots on goal and a plus-1 rating. The 6-foot-1, 196-pound defenseman has appeared in 161 career NHL games over six seasons with the Bolts, Sharks, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators, recording seven goals and 28 points. Claesson has also skated in 14 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, all during the 2017 playoffs, registering three assists and four penalty minutes.

 

The Stockholm, Sweden native has also played in 332 career AHL games over six seasons, collecting 16 goals and 89 points. During the 2019-20 season with the Charlotte Checkers, Claesson notched three goals and 19 points in 47 games, while also serving as the team’s assistant captain.

 

Claesson was originally drafted by the Senators in the fifth round, 126th overall, at the 2011 NHL Draft.

Blue Bombers acquire defensive back Alden Darby in trade with Argonauts

WINNIPEG, MB., – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has acquired American defensive back Alden Darby from the Toronto Argonauts, in exchange for American offensive lineman Terry Poole.

Darby (5-11, 195, Arizona State; DOB: June 22, 1992 in Long Beach, CA) joins the Blue Bombers after three seasons with the Toronto Argonauts. Over 43 games with the Argos, including 40 starts, Darby registered 137 tackles, one sack, eight interceptions and three touchdowns. He had 56 tackles and five interceptions in 17 games with Toronto in 2019.

Darby appeared in 50 games over four seasons at Arizona State (2010-13) and was a two-time All-Pac 12 player. He was signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2014 and has also had stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts before he joined the Argos.

Bolts to Play Preseason Game Versus Florida at Amway Center on October 5

 

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have extended its ECHL affiliation agreement with the Orlando Solar Bears, vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois announced today. The Solar Bears will continue to serve as the “AA” affiliate for the Lightning over the next two seasons. The defending back-to-back Stanley Cup Champions will also play a preseason game against the Florida Panthers at the AdventHealth Rink at Amway Center on Tuesday, October 5. Tickets for the game will go on sale to the general public at a later date.

 

“We are extremely grateful for our affiliation with the Solar Bears,” BriseBois said.  “Chris Heller, Drake Berehowsky and the entire organization provide a world class environment for our players to develop in a winning culture while also growing the game in the Sunshine State. The Lightning look forward to continuing our relationship with the Solar Bears for another two years.”

 

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning,” Solar Bears president Chris Heller said. “Julien BriseBois and his staff have been first-class partners, and we look forward to this affiliation helping us bring our first Kelly Cup title to Orlando, along with continuing to aid in the growth of hockey throughout Central Florida.”

 

Tickets for the Lightning’s preseason game at Amway Center will go on sale to the general public at a date to be announced.  Exclusive pre-sales to Lightning, Solar Bears and Orlando Magic Season Ticket Members, as well as Magic Premium members will be offered.

 

The Bolts’ return to Orlando will be the team’s fourth exhibition game  at Amway Center, home of the Solar Bears and the NBA’s Orlando Magic, and their eighth appearance in Orlando overall. Tampa Bay’s most recent game at the AdventHealth Rink at Amway Center was September 27, 2018, a 6-2 win over the Panthers.

 

Tampa Bay entered into its current affiliation with Orlando at the start of the 2018-19 season. That season culminated in a second consecutive trip to the second round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs for Orlando, and its longest postseason run to date. Since the start of the affiliation, 22 players have appeared with both the Solar Bears and the Syracuse Crunch, Tampa Bay’s American Hockey League affiliate, and Orlando has posted a 104-83-16-3 (.551) record.

 

Prior to that the Lightning held ECHL affiliations with the Adirondack Thunder for the 2017-28 season, the Kalamazoo Wings for 2016-17, and the Florida Everblades from 2010-2013. The Lightning’s very first ECHL affiliate was the Louisville Icehawks during the Bolts’ inaugural season in 1992-93.

 

The Solar Bears are members of the ECHL, the premier “AA” hockey league in North America, and have qualified for the Kelly Cup Playoffs in five of nine seasons. The Solar Bears are owned and operated by the Orlando Magic and the DeVos Family, and play at the AdventHealth Rink at Amway Center, the 2012 Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal Sports Facility of the Year.
