PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms with first-round pick SS Jordan Lawlar, the No. 6 overall selection in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft. The D-backs have signed their first 12 picks (1-2, CBB, 3-11) and 17 of 21 picks overall.

RHP Codi Heuer added to Cubs 26-man roster

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Chicago Cubs today added right-handed pitcher Codi Heuer (pronounced Hoyer) to the 26-man roster.

 

Heuer, who will wear uniform number 12, is available for tonight’s 7:05 p.m. ET game against the Nationals at Nationals Park. He was acquired yesterday from the White Sox with infielder Nick Madrigal for right-handed pitcher Craig Kimbrel.

 

Heuer, 25, in his 2020 major league debut season with the White Sox was 3-0 with a save, six holds and a 1.52 ERA (4 ER/23.2 IP) in 21 relief appearances. He walked nine and struck out 25, good for an average of 9.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. His 1.52 ERA ranked sixth among A.L. relievers while his .145 opponent batting average was seventh.

 

Selected by the White Sox in the sixth round of the 2018 draft, Heuer this season is 4-1 with 13 holds and a 5.12 ERA (22 ER/38.2 IP) in 40 relief appearances. He has averaged 9.1 strikeouts per 9.0 innings with 39 strikeouts compared to 10 walks and has stranded 19 of 23 inherited runners.

Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

 

  • Placed left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain, retroactive to July 30.

 

  • Optioned catcher Connor Wong to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

 

  • Added right-hander pitcher Hansel Robles (No. 56) and left-handed pitcher Austin Davis (No. 65) to the active 26-man roster.

 

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

 

Hernandez, 24, pitched a scoreless eighth inning Thursday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Over 41 appearances this season (all in relief), the left-hander is 2-2 with a 3.44 ERA. Of those 41 outings this year, 33 have been scoreless and 23 have been hitless. Across three major league seasons, all with Boston (2019-21), Hernandez has struck out 45.2 percent of left-handed hitters faced, holding them to a .158 batting average.

 

Wong, 25, made his major league debut this season and appeared in five games over two stints with Boston, going 3-for-12 (.250) and throwing out the only runner who attempted to steal against him. In 26 games with Worcester this season, he has hit .188 (19-for-101) with two home runs, making 24 starts at catcher, one at second base, and one at designated hitter. Wong is ranked by MLB.com as the Red Sox’ No. 16 prospect.

 

Robles, 30, has made 45 appearances with the Twins this season, recording 10 saves with a 4.91 ERA (24 ER/44.0 IP) and 43 strikeouts. The right-hander has pitched in 358 major league games (one start) with the New York Mets (2015-18), Los Angeles Angels (2018-20), and Twins (2021), going 27-22 with 37 saves, a 4.03 ERA (169 ER/377.2 IP), and a .230 opponent batting average. In 2019, Robles recorded career bests in appearances (71), ERA (2.48), and saves (23).

 

Davis, 28, has made 65 major league relief appearances with the Philadelphia Phillies (2018-20) and Pirates (2020-21), posting a 5.65 ERA (45 ER/71.2 IP) with 78 strikeouts. This season, the left-hander has pitched in 10 games with Pittsburgh and in 13 at the minor league level, recording a 2.65 ERA (5 ER/17.0 IP), a 0.82 WHIP, and a .148 opponent batting average between Low-A Bradenton (two games) and Triple-A Indianapolis (11 games). Born in Scottsdale, AZ, Davis was selected by the Phillies in the 12th round of the 2014 June Draft.

Gilberto Celestino optioned to Triple-A St. Paul

 

ST. LOUIS, MO – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have reinstated infielder/outfielder Luis Arraez from the 10-day Injured List.

 

Arraez, who missed the last nine games with a right knee strain, has hit .305 (74-for-243) with nine doubles, four triples, one home run, 23 RBI, 39 runs scored, 24 walks, a .368 on-base percentage and a .754 OPS in 68 games for the Twins this season.

 

To make room on the 26-man roster, the Twins have optioned outfielder Gilberto Celestino to Triple-A St. Paul. Celestino has played in 23 games for the Twins this season across three stints, with three doubles, two home runs, three RBI, three walks and seven runs scored.

RHP Domingo Acevedo and INF/OF Jacob Wilson designated for assignment

 

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s placed RHP James Kaprielian on the 10-day injured list retroactive to July 28 with right shoulder impingement and optioned catcher Aramis Garcia to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. The moves clear spots on the 26-man roster for INF/OF Josh Harrison and C Yan Gomes, who were acquired from the Washington Nationals yesterday in exchange for minor league right-handed pitchers Richard Guasch and Seth Shuman and minor league catcher Drew Millas.

 

Additionally, to clear spots on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated right-handed pitcher Domingo Acevedo and INF/OF Jacob Wilson for assignment.

 

Kaprielian was recalled from Las Vegas on May 12 and is 5-4 with a 3.24 ERA (26 er in 72.1 ip) over 13 games with Oakland. He ranks sixth among American League rookies in innings pitched (72.1) and strikeouts (79) and is tied for sixth in wins (5) and games started (13). He has allowed two runs or fewer in nine of his 13 starts.

 

Garcia was on the Opening Day roster and appeared in 30 games at catcher, including 26 starts, batting .205 (18-for-88) with a double, three home runs and seven RBI in 32 total games with the A’s. Opponents were 8-for-12 (66.7%) in stolen base attempts with him behind the plate.

 

Acevedo was selected from Las Vegas June 21 and appeared in three games with Oakland. He allowed three runs on five hits and no walks in 3.0 innings and struck out three. Acevedo had a 3.09 ERA and .184 opponents batting average in 21 games with the Aviators.

 

Wilson was selected from Las Vegas July 8 and went 1-for-7 in six games in his Major League debut. He started two games at second base and one in left field and also appeared in one game at third base. Wilson hit .288 with 14 home runs and 46 RBI in 49 games with the Aviators.

 

Gomes is batting .271 with nine home runs and 35 RBI in 63 games with Washington. He has thrown out 16-of-44 (36.4%) attempted base stealers and is tied for second in the majors in most caught stealing. The 34-year-old right-handed hitter is batting .340 with runners in scoring position, .333 in July and .365 against left-handed hitters. Gomes is a .248 career hitter with 112 home runs and 399 RBI in 842 games in 10 seasons in the majors with Toronto (2012), Cleveland (2013-18) and Washington (2019-21). He was a National League All-Star in 2018, a Silver Slugger in 2014 and has played in the postseason five times, including 2019 for the World Series Champion Nationals.

 

Harrison is batting .294 with 23 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 38 RBI in 90 games with Washington. He is tied for fifth in the National League in hit by pitches (12), ranks seventh in plate appearances per strikeout (7.18) and is 11th in doubles. The 34-year-old right-handed hitter is batting .304 with runners in scoring position and .412 since the All-Star Break. Harrison has started 61 games at second base, 12 in left field, eight at third base, two in center field and one in right field and has played every position except catcher in his career. He is a .275 career hitter with 62 home runs and 329 RBI in 1,001 games in 11 seasons with Pittsburgh (2011-18), Detroit (2019) and Washington (2020-21). Harrison was an NL All-Star for the Pirates in 2014 and 17.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed goaltender Alex Lyon to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Lyon $750,000 at the NHL level and $200,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level with a $250,000 guarantee.

 

“Alex is a goaltender with experience at both the AHL and NHL levels,” said Waddell. “This signing helps solidify our goaltending depth.”

 

Lyon, 28, played six NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2020-21, earning a 1-3-1 record, 3.33 goals-against average and .893 save percentage. He has posted a 6-7-2 record, 3.21 goals-against average and .893 save percentage in 22 career NHL games with Philadelphia. The 6’1″, 201-pound netminder also appeared in four AHL games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms last season, posting a 2-1-0 record, 3.40 goals-against average and .874 save percentage. Lyon owns a 75-54-22 record, 2.75 goals-against average, .913 save percentage and six shutouts in 149 career AHL games.

 

Prior to turning professional, he registered a 50-29-14 record, 1.88 goals-against average, .931 save percentage and 15 shutouts in 93 career NCAA games with Yale. In his final two seasons at Yale, Lyon was named ECAC Goaltender of the Year and All-Ivy First Team, and he was selected as a finalist for the Hobey Baker and Mike Richter awards in 2015-16. The Baudette, Minn., native also made 99 USHL appearances with the Cedar Rapids Roughriders and the Omaha Lancers from 2011-13, earning a 52-37-4 record, 2.73 goals-against average, .912 save percentage and five shutouts. He was selected to the USHL All-Rookie Team in 2011-12 and the USHL Second All-Star Team in 2012-13.

Forward has tallied 83 points in 139 career AHL games

 

RALEIGH, N.C. – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed forward Maxim Letunov to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Letunov $750,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level with a $140,000 guarantee.

 

“Max is a playmaking center who brings size and speed,” said Waddell. “This signing helps improve our organizational depth at forward.”

 

Letunov, 25, registered 15 points (12g, 3a) in 32 AHL games with the San Jose Barracuda last season. He has posted 83 points (36g, 47a) in 139 career AHL games, all with the Barracuda. The 6’4″, 185-pound forward has skated in three career NHL games with the Sharks, scoring one goal. Letunov played three seasons of NCAA hockey at UConn from 2015-18, recording 95 points (35g, 60a). He also tallied 107 points (44g, 63a) in 118 USHL games with Youngstown from 2013-15. Letunov was named to the USHL Second All-Star Team in 2014-15, the Hockey East Second All-Star Team in 2015-16 and 2017-18, and the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 2015-16. The Moscow, Russia, native was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the second round, 47th overall, of the 2014 NHL Draft.

Flames sign Defenseman Colton Poolman

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announce today that they have signed defenseman Colton Poolman to a one year, two-way contract.

 

Poolman, a native of East Grand Forks, MN originally signed with the Flames as a college free agent in March of 2020 following a four year collegiate career at the University of North Dakota. He was captain of the Fighting Hawks his final two seasons. In his first professional season with the Stockton Heat, the 6’1″ blue-liner recorded six points in 21 games.
