Rangers acquire RHP Tyson Miller on waiver claim from Chicago Cubs; activate RHP Kyle Gibson and transfer RHP Hunter Wood to 60-day injured list
LHP Wes Benjamin was optioned to Round Rock (AAA) following game on Thursday
Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced the following transactions prior to Friday’s homestand opener against the Tampa Bay Rays:
• Right-handed pitcher Tyson Miller acquired on waiver claim from Chicago-NL and optioned to Round Rock (AAA)
• Right-handed pitcher Kyle Gibson activated from 10-day Injured List
• Right-handed pitcher Hunter Wood transferred from 10-day Injured List to 60-day Injured List
• Left-handed pitcher Wes Benjamin optioned to Round Rock (AAA), effective postgame on Thursday
Miller, 25, has no record and a 5.06 ERA (3 ER/5.1 IP) over 3 games/one start with Triple-A Iowa this season with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. He has averaged 10.1 strikeouts per 9 innings over his brief stint at Triple-A after spending time at the club’s Arizona complex to begin the season. Miller did not make his season debut until May 22 and his lone start this year came in his last outing on May 29 vs. St. Paul (3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 43 pitches/30 strikes).
Miller was designated for assignment by the Cubs on May 30, when the Cubs added infielder Sergio Alcántara to the team’s 40-man roster. Miller made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 2020, posting no record and a 5.40 ERA (3 ER/5.0 IP) over 2 games/one start spanning two total days on which the team had doubleheaders: August 17 and September 5. He was originally selected by Chicago-NL in the fourth round of the 2016 June draft out of California Baptist University.
Gibson is the Rangers’ scheduled starting pitcher for tonight’s homestand opener against the Rays. He was on the 10-day Injured List from May 22-June 3 for a right groin strain, and last pitched on May 21 vs. Houston. He has a 3-0 record with a 2.24 ERA (15 ER/60.1 IP) over 10 games/starts for the Rangers this season.
Wood, who has a mild UCL sprain in his right elbow, was placed on the 10-day Injured List on May 25, retroactive to May 23. The first date he would be eligible to return is July 22. Wood produced a 3.60 ERA (2 ER/5.0 IP) over 5 relief appearances for Texas during his lone stint on the active roster this season from May 15-22.
Benjamin pitched 2.0 innings in Thursday’s loss in Colorado and he was optioned to Round Rock (AAA) after the game. He has a 0-2 record with an 8.76 ERA (12 ER/12.1 IP) in 6 games/one start spanning three stints with the Rangers this season: Opening Day-April 16, May 14, and May 25-June 3.
Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the Major League roster, along with seven players on the 60-day Injured List.

D-backs recall Humberto Castellanos from Triple-A Reno, place Madison Bumgarner on the 10-day injured list

Twins place Caleb Thielbar on 10-day injured list
Shaun Anderson recalled from Triple-A St. Paul
KANSAS CITY, MO – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed left-handed pitcher Caleb Thielbar on the 10-day Injured List with a left groin strain. Thielbar was removed from last night’s game in Baltimore with the injury.
Thielbar has posted a 4.29 ERA (21.0 IP, 10 ER) with five holds, seven walks, 31 strikeouts and a 1.48 WHIP in 20 relief appearances for the Twins this season. Five of his last six appearances since May 19 have been scoreless, posting a 1.59 ERA (5.2 IP, 1 ER) in that span.
To replace Thielbar on the 26-man roster, the Twins have recalled right-handed pitcher Shaun Anderson from Triple-A St. Paul. Anderson will be making his third stint with the Twins this season and has posted a 9.00 ERA (5.0 IP, 5 ER) with three walks and six strikeouts in three major league appearances in 2021. He was previously with the club on April 15 and from May 12 until his placement on the 10-day Injured List with a left quad strain on May 18. Anderson made two scoreless 1.0-inning rehab appearances for the Saints on May 28 and 30, and was returned from his rehab assignment, reinstated from the Injured List and optioned to St. Paul on May 31.
Dodgers activate AJ Pollock and Jimmy Nelson
Alex Vesia, Edwin Uceta optioned
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers activated outfielder AJ Pollock and right-handed pitcher Jimmy Nelson from the injured list and optioned pitchers Alex Vesia and Edwin Uceta to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Pollock, 33, returns to the injured list after missing 17 games with a left hamstring strain. He played in four rehab games at Rancho Cucamonga, going 2-for-9 with a homer and one RBI. Prior to the injury, he appeared in 32 games for the Dodgers, batting .277 (26-for-94) with five doubles, four homers and 16 RBI. Last season, he finished tied for the team lead with 16 homers and batted .276 with 25 extra-base hits and 34 RBI in 55 games. He is in 10th Major League season and is a career .279 (802-for-2875) hitter with 109 homers and 361 RBI.
Nelson, 31, appeared in 16 games for the Dodgers prior to injury. He posted a 1-1 record with a 2.41 ERA (5 ER/18.2 IP) and 30 strikeouts. He made his lone start of the season for the Dodgers on May 16, going 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball against the Marlins and has not allowed a run in his last seven appearances (9.1 IP). He is in his seventh Major League season and is a combined 34-47 with a 4.17 ERA (302 ER/652.0 IP) in 135 games (108 starts).
Vesia, 25, appeared in 10 games for the Dodgers, going 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA (7 ER/10.2 IP) and 16 strikeouts against 11 walks. The Northern California native was acquired from the Marlins along with minor leaguer Kyle Hurt in exchange for Dylan Floro. In 52 career minor league games, he has posted a 1.62 ERA (18 ER/100.0IP) and 138 strikeouts.
Uceta, 23, pitched in seven games for the Dodgers, allowing five earned runs over 12.2 innings with 13 strikeouts. The Dominican Republic native has been with the Dodgers organization since signing as international free agent on July 2, 2016. In parts of five minor league seasons, he has posted a 20-12 record with a 3.73 ERA (139 ER/335.0 IP) and 368 strikeouts.
Blue Jays roster move
The Toronto Blue Jays have reinstated LHP Anthony Kay from the 10-day injured list (left fourth digit blister) and optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo.
D-backs roster move
The D-backs acquired RHP Tyler Jones from the Marlins as the player-to-be-named-later in the Dec. 10, 2020, trade for RHP Zach Pop.
