Pirates Roster move and Ben Cherington comment

Outfielder Gregory Polanco has been designated for assignment and infielder Cole Tucker is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.

 

This will be Tucker’s third stint with the Pirates this season. He went 2-for-15 with a double and an RBI in eight games from 5/21 thru 6/5 and 1-for-6 in five games from 7/6-16. In 13 total games with the Pirates in 2021, Tucker has gone 3-for-21 (.143) while making six appearances (four starts) at shortstop and one appearance at first base (one inning on 7/7 vs. Atlanta).

 

In 61 games with Indianapolis, Tucker has hit .223 (49-for-220) with 11 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 20 RBI, while making 48 appearances at shortstop, seven in right field, four at second base and three in left field.

 

Polanco, who went 6-for-11 in his last four games, produced a .208 (70-for-336) average, 12 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 36 RBI and a team-leading 14 stolen bases in 107 games with the Pirates this season.

 

In his career with the Pirates (2014-2021), Polanco hit .241 with 156 doubles, 19 triples, 96 home runs, 362 RBI and 98 stolen bases in 823 games. His 697 games played in right field rank fourth among all Pirates (since 1901) behind Roberto Clemente (2295), Paul Waner (1995) and Dave Parker (1180).

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled right-handed pitcher Edwin Uceta and optioned right-handed pitcher Andre Jackson.

 

Uceta, 23, returns for his seventh stint with the club and he is 0-3 with a 6.64 ERA (15 ER/20.1 IP) and 25 strikeouts in 14 games (one start) for the Dodgers. With Triple-A Oklahoma City this year, he was 1-3 with a 6.20 ERA (14 ER/20.1 IP) and 27 strikeouts in seven games (three starts). The Dominican Republic native has been with the Dodgers organization since signing as an international free agent on July 2, 2016. In parts of six minor league seasons, he has posted a 21-15 record with a 3.86 ERA in 84 minor league games.

 

Jackson, 25, tossed 4.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits last night as he suffered his first career loss. The Arizona native is now 0-1 with 1.04 ERA (1 ER/8.2 IP) and seven strikeouts. The former 12th round pick of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Utah has split the season between Low-A Rancho Cucamonga, Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City and is a combined 5-2 with a 3.16 ERA (27 ER/77.0 IP) and 86 strikeouts.

CHESTER, Pa.  – The Philadelphia Union took on D.C. United at Audi Field on Saturday, August 28. The Union fell 3-1, keeping them in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The Union went up a goal in the first half after Alejandro Bedoya’s cross hit DC United defender Steve Birnbaum and deflected in for an own goal. In the 36th minute, referee Rubiel Vazquez awarded a penalty kick to DC after a VAR review of Alvas Powell’s tackle on Yordy Reyna. Ola Kamara drove home a penalty kick to even the score at one going into halftime. The home side took a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute when Yordy Reyna scored after Andre Blake made a reflex save on a Ola Kamara header. Andy Najar and Jack Elliott were awarded yellow cards in separate incident just before the hour mark as both coaches prepared changes. Jim Curtin added Quinn Sullivan and Cory Burke in place of Kacper Przybylko and Daniel Gazdag and Drew Skundrich replaced Edison Flores for DC. Philly continued to push for an equalizer as Olivier Mbaizo and Paxten Aaronson entered the game, but could not find the finish they needed. Ramon Abila added a third in the 94th minute for the home team. The Union return home for Fireworks Night at Subaru Park to take on New England Revolution on Friday, September 3 (7:30 p.m. ET / PHL17).

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC fell to Minnesota United FC by a 2-1 scoreline tonight at BBVA Stadium.

The Dynamo jumped out to an early lead within the first 60 seconds thanks to an excellent combination play between midfielder Adalberto “Coco” Carrasquilla and forward Fafa Picault. After forward Maxi Urruti won the ball in the attacking third, Carrasquilla headed it wide to Picault. The forward took a touch before playing a low ball back in to Carrasquilla, whose first-touch effort found the back of the net just 56 seconds into the match.

The goal was the fourth-fastest goal in Dynamo history and the earliest goal since Andrew Wenger scored 52 seconds into a 3-1 win over Montreal on July 5, 2017. It was Houston’s sixth goal inside the opening minute in Club history.

Minnesota equalized in the 16th minute off of a free kick. Wil Trapp served the initial ball into the penalty area and it was flicked to the back post where Ethan Finlay played it back across the face of goal for Adrien Hunou to tap into the net.

The visitors took the lead in the 73rd minute when Hunou ran in behind the Dynamo back line and slipped a shot past the outstretched leg of Houston goalkeeper Michael Nelson. Moments earlier, Nelson had come up with an acrobatic diving save to keep the score level at a goal apiece. The Katy, Texas native was credited with two saves in his Major League Soccer debut.

The Dynamo harassed the Minnesota net throughout the final 15 minutes plus stoppage, but were unable to find the equalizer. Picault nearly found the net for the fourth consecutive game in the 86th minute, rising high to head a corner kick on target, forcing a save from Miller. A minute later, midfielder Joe Corona collected the ball near the top of the penalty area and turned to fire a left-footed shot which drew another Miller save.

Houston will continue a stretch of three straight home matches next Friday night when they welcome the Portland Timbers to BBVA Stadium. That match will be the Club’s annual Soccer Kicks Cancer Night, with a variety of fundraising initiatives and programmatic elements centered around the effort to treat and cure pediatric cancer. LAFC plays to a 3-3 draw with the LA Galaxy

The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) earned a point in a wild 3-3 draw with the LA Galaxy on Saturday afternoon at Banc of California Stadium. New signing Cristian Arango scored his first MLS goal while Brian Rodriguez scored a pair of second half goals, his first two goals of the 2021 season. The tie snapped a four-game losing streak for LAFC, who is now 6-9-6 on the season for 24 points.

Making his first appearance at Banc of California Stadium after signing for the club last month, Arango scored his first goal by converting a penalty kick in the 44thminute, cancelling out a 20th minute opener from the Galaxy’s Dejan Joveljic. Arango had been pulled down inside the box to set up the penalty, and the Colombian dispatched his spot kick off the post and into the net, sending the teams into halftime tied 1-1.

In the second half, LAFC peppered the Galaxy goal but were unable to pull in front until just before the hour mark. Brian Rodriguez ran at the Galaxy defense and cut past a trio of defenders before firing a tight angle shot into the roof of the net, giving LAFC a 2-1 advantage.

Joveljic would equalize for the Galaxy in the 64th minute, but just two minutes later, LAFC was back in front. A low shot by Diego Palacios was saved, but Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Bond was unable to prevent a rebound, and Rodriguez reacted quickest, allowing him to score from close range and give his team a 3-2 lead.

However, the Galaxy were able to equalize once more, scoring in the 86th minute thanks to a Kevin Cabral strike from the center of the box to tie the score at 3-3 and give each team a point.

LAFC returns to action on Friday, September 3 when it hosts Sporting Kansas City at Banc of California Stadium. That game kicks off at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live nationally on UniMas and TUDN.

Canadiens have seven days to match proposal

 

RALEIGH, NC – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has tendered an offer sheet to restricted free agent forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The one-year contract, which Kotkaniemi has signed, pays a salary of $6,100,015 for the 2021-22 season and carries a $20 signing bonus. The Montreal Canadiens have seven days to match the offer. If the Canadiens do not match the offer, they will receive a first-round pick and a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft as compensation from the Hurricanes.

 

“Jesperi Kotkaniemi accepted our offer. He wants to come to Carolina,” said Waddell. “He sees the core we’ve built here and he wants to be a part of that. We’re proud, but there’s still a waiting period. When you make an offer like that, we saw a vulnerable position. The offer, with the compensation and the core we have, we realized that it was the best chance we had to get the player.”

 

Kotkaniemi, 21, registered 20 points (5g, 15a) in 56 games with Montreal in 2020-21. During the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, he posted eight points (5g, 3a) in 19 games. The 6’2″, 201-pound forward has tallied 62 points (22g, 40a) in 171 career NHL regular-season games, all with the Canadiens. Kotkaniemi also skated in 13 AHL games with Laval in 2019-20, recording 13 points (1g, 12a). He registered 37 points (12g, 25a) in 67 Liiga (Finland) games over two seasons with Assat. Kotkaniemi represented Finland at both the 2017 and 2018 IIHF Under-18 World Championships, winning silver in 2017 and gold in 2018. The Pori, Finland, native was selected in the first round, third overall, of the 2018 NHL Draft by Montreal.

GAME RECAP: Lions pick up a win in rainy Ottawa

OTTAWA — In his return to TD Place, BC’s Rick Campbell collected his second win of the season on the heels of a collective team effort, knocking off his former club, the Ottawa REDBLACKS, 24-12.

 

Leading the charge for his team was a combination of kicking from Jimmy Camacho who went 3-3 on the night and passing from Michael Reilly, who threw for 301 yards. Matt Nichols finished the night with  206 passing yards and an interception.

 

After the haze from the welcome-home fireworks cleared from the Ottawa skyline and both teams settled in, the opening quarter between the REDBLACKS and Lions saw both teams not give an inch.

 

Poised as a matchup between two defences, one in BC that has had the most productive secondary in the CFL, recording a takeaway or more in all their matchups and one in Ottawa that has not been easy to drive against, both delivered, not allowing a touchdown in the opening quarter. Instead, it was a kicking clinic in the opening frame between BC’s Jimmy Camacho and Ottawa’s Lewis Ward. Camacho was good from 49 and 17-yards out while Ward’s 20-yard chip shot kept the REDBLACKS within reach of the BC 6-3 lead.

 

While Mike Benevides’ REDBLACKS’ defence kept Reilly and the BC offence at bay for nearly the entire half, it was only a matter of time before things started clicking for the Lions.

 

After orchestrating an end-to-end drive, starting on his 19-yard line, Reilly completed five of his seven passes before a pass interference call in the end zone set the Lions up at the Ottawa goal line. Plunging his way between the guards, Reilly scored the game’s first touchdown and extended the Orange and Black’s lead.

 

Making it now four consecutive games, the BC lions’ secondary recorded another takeaway after rookie linebacker Jordan Williams stepped in front of a pass intended for Charone Peake for the interception. After coming out of the ensuing Lions’ possession relatively unscathed after Reilly and the Lions were forced to call on the foot of Camacho again, Ward would answer for the REDBLACKS, keeping Ottawa within a touchdown of the lead.

 

As the skies opened up in the third quarter and the rain began to fall down on TD Place, the offence that seemed to be abundant just moments ago evaporated. A streak of multiple two-and-outs by both teams would be broken up by a pass interference penalty by Bo Lokombo would see Ottawa collect the ball at mid-field.

 

After standing their ground, BC would force Ottawa to trot out Lewis Ward for another field goal attempt. Being good this time from 38-yards out, the six-point BC lead previously held now read a deficit of three.

 

BC would respond with points of their own as after Reilly’s throw would slice through the rain enough to find Jevon Cottoy fighting coverage by Don Unamba for a 46-yard reception. After picking up an additional 15 yards after the catch and bringing it over the goal line, Cottoy would record his second-career touchdown and the second touchdown of the game for the Lions to make it 22-12.

 

The mixture of rain and their opponent would spell issues for Ottawa in their efforts to mount a comeback down the stretch. After collecting the first down late in the game, back-to-back Nichols competitions would not be enough for a first down. Opting to go for it and only needing a handful of yards, Justin Davis was dropped behind the line for a loss of one, turning the ball over to Reilly and the Lions.

 

Back-to-back singles by Stefan Flintoft would increase BC’s lead to 24-12.

 

A Davis fumble moments later followed by a point-free last-minute drive would ultimately seal the deal for BC as they collected their second win of the season.

 

Ottawa’s next game will be next Friday against Vernon Adams Jr. and the Montreal Alouettes. BC’s win will send the team into a bye week. Their next game will not be until Week 6, where they will welcome Ottawa to BC Place for a rematch.

CFL Preview: Bombers look to get back on track at home against Stampeders

WINNIPEG — Week 4 of CFL action will come to a close on Sunday night with the Calgary Stampeders travelling to IG Field to take on their Western rivals, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

 

The Stampeders will be looking to build on the impressive Week 3 debut of rookie quarterback Jake Maier, whose gutty performance helped to secure a 28-22 victory over the Montreal Alouettes.

 

Despite a rough start from the rookie, Maier wasn’t easily rattled, which earned him high praise from veteran offensive linemen Ucambre Williams.

 

“Great poise, even with the mistakes he was still back there gunslinging,” Williams told Stampeders.com.

 

“He got hit a couple times and still got back up. I enjoy that as an offensive lineman. You want to protect the guy, but when he gets back up when you make a mistake that gives you confidence.”

 

Maier struggled throwing the ball in the first quarter, completing just two passes on six attempts, while throwing two interceptions. However, through the remaining three quarters Maier showed that he has the talent necessary to be a CFL quarterback, throwing the ball 23 times and completing 14 passes for 248 yards and a touchdown.

 

This week, against an aggressive Winnipeg defensive unit, the young pivot knows he will need to stay in the moment and not let his emotions take over.

 

“I believe a quarterback should be even keeled and not get rattled by anything,” Maier told Stampeders.com.

 

“I think that rubs off on your teammates when you’re playing in big game or a hostile environment.”

 

While Maier’s first start was impressive and has generated headlines across the league, the recent play of the Calgary offence shouldn’t go without mention.

 

Headlined by the electric play of Josh Huff and Markeith Ambles the Stamps have been able to build an impressive passing attack. The Red and White have accumulated 846 air yards and are averaging 8.3 yards per reception, making them one of the most efficient passing offences through the first three weeks of league action.

 

Ambles and Huff have combined for 409 yards on 24 receptions for Calgary and are one of the best receiving tandems in the league, second only to the BC Lions duo of Lucky Whitehead and Bryan Burnham.

 

Despite the aggressive nature of the Winnipeg defence, they have struggled defending the run, surrendering a league-high 327 rush yards and three rushing touchdowns.

 

The Stamps will certainly be looking to Ka’Deem Carey to contribute on the ground in their matchup against the Bombers. Carey has totaled 185 rush yards through his first three games, including a two-touchdown performance against Montreal in Week 3.

 

The Bombers enter their Week 4 matchup coming off a 30-23 loss to the Toronto Argonauts, a rare occurrence for the defending Grey Cup champs. Their last loss in the CFL regular season was 672 days ago, where they fell 37-33 in Week 19 to Calgary.

 

As they prepare for the Stamps this time around, they will be preparing for a rookie quarterback. That’s something that veteran defensive linemen, Jackson Jeffcoat knows the Bombers’ front seven will need to take advantage of.

 

“He seems to be pretty confident back there in the pocket throwing the ball,” Jeffcoat said of Maier, through bluebombers.com. “As a young guy, we’re going to have to rattle him, not let him sit back there and be comfortable.”

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announce today that they have signed forward Dillon Dube to a three-year contract with a $2,300,000 AAV.

 

Dube spent the last two seasons with the Calgary Flames and has 121 career NHL games with 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points along with 30 penalty minutes. Drafted by Calgary in the second round (56th overall) in the 2016 Draft, the former Kelowna Rocket (WHL) has amassed 56 AHL games with the Stockton Heat were he netted 19 goals and 37 assists for 56 points and 34 penalty minutes. Dube captained the Canadian junior team that won gold at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, NY.

NEW YORK – Three members of the Split-T Management stable will be in action as undefeated heavyweight Stephan Shaw and undefeated junior welterweight Omar Rosario will be in the ring on Friday in Plant City, Florida while former IBF Junior Welterweight champion Ivan Baranchyk battles undefeated Montana Love as part of the Jake Paul – Tyron Woodley pay-per-view event on Sunday night in Cleveland.

 

Shaw of Saint Louis, Missouri is one of the top heavyweight prospects in the United States as he sports a record of 14-0 with 10 knockouts. The 28 year-old will be making his 2021 debut. He has racked up wins over Danny Kelly (9-2-1), Jonny Rice (4-1-1), Joel Caudle (7-1-1), Donovan Dennis (12-3), Willie Jake Jr, (8-2-1), Gregory Corbin (15-2) and his last bout when he took an eight-round unanimous decision over Lyubomyr Pinchuk (12-1-1-) on December 17, 2020 in Las Angeles..

 

Shaw will be taken on Nick Davis (6-2) of Atlanta, Georgia. Davis is a six-year professional who is coming off a 2nd round stoppage of Eric Abraham on July 23rd in Decatur, Georgia.

Rosario of Caguas, Puerto Rico will take on fellow undefeated Marc Misiura in a four-round bout. Rosario of Caguas, Puerto Rico is 4-o with two knockouts.

 

Rosario, 23 years-old, was the Puerto Rican Olympic Trial Champion at 152 lbs., and was the island’s favorite to win a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Misiura is the third consecutive undefeated opponent for Rosario. Rosario stopped both Uriel Villanueva (1-0) and Wilfred Mariano (3-0), with the latter coming on June 19th in Las Vegas.

On Sunday night in Cleveland, Baranchyk will make his long awaited return to the ring following his participation in the 2020 fight of the year against Jose Zepeda. That fight, which took place on October 3, 2020 featured eight knockdowns, with Baranchyk coming up on the short end of a classic that was stopped in round five.

 

Prior to that fight, Barranchyk (20-2, 13 KOs) of Miami, Oklahoma, has wins over Alfonso Olver (1-0), David Thomas (4-0), Angel Figueroa (4-1-1), Shadi Shawareb (9-0-2), Nicholas Givan (16-0-1), Eliseo Cruz Sesma (9-0-1), Zhimin Wang (7-0), Abel Ramos (17-1-2), Keenan Smith (11-0), former two-time world title challenger Petr Petrov (38-5).

 

On October 27, 2018, Barachyk won the IBF Junior Welterweight title with a 7th round stoppage over Anthony Yigit in New Orleans. In his first defense he came up just short against now undisputed world champion Josh Taylor. Baranchyk rebounded with a 4th round stoppage over Gabriel Bracero (25-3-1).

 

Love of Cleveland is 15-0-1 with seven knockouts. Just 26 years-old, Love already has wins over Vladimir Pierre (1-0), Samuel Teah (12-1), Ricardo Garcia (14-2), Jerrrico Walton (16-0) and in his last bout, Love stopped Olaide Fijabi (16-0) in two rounds on June 5th in Dubai.

 

The bout will be part of a SHOWTIME Pay-Per-View broadcast at 8 PM ET
