Capitals’ McIlrath Suspended Two Preseason Games and Two Regular-Season Games for Illegal Check to the Head

NEW YORK – Washington Capitals defenseman Dylan McIlrath has been suspended for two preseason games and two regular-season games, without pay, for an illegal check to the head of Boston Bruins forward Steven Fogarty during NHL Preseason Game No. 4 in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, Sept. 26, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

 

The incident occurred at 0:32 of the third period. McIlrath was assessed a match penalty for illegal check to the head.

 

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, McIlrath will forfeit $7,500.00. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

NEW YORK – Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig has been suspended for one preseason game and one regular-season game, without pay, for cross-checking Winnipeg Jets forward Pierre-Luc Dubois during NHL Preseason Game No. 7 in Winnipeg on Sunday, Sept. 26, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

 

The incident occurred at 10:29 of the second period. Greig was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for cross-checking.

 

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Greig will forfeit $4,470.83. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS – Playing the third match of its current four-game road stretch, Sounders FC (14-5-6, 48 points) defeated Sporting Kansas City (13-6-7, 46 points) 2-1 on Sunday evening at Children’s Mercy Park. The matchup featured the top two sides in the West, as Seattle vaulted Sporting and returned to first place in the Western Conference standings. Seattle returns to action on Wednesday, September 29 with a midweek road matchup against the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium (7:30 p.m. PT / FOX 13+, Prime Video, 1090 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).

Seattle struck first in the 31st minute courtesy of Cristian Roldan, who found the net for the second time in as many games. Josh Atencio pounced on a loose ball in SKC’s half and chipped a through-ball down the left flank to Brad Smith, who crossed a pass into the 18-yard-box and found Roldan for a finish past Tim Melia. It marked Roldan’s third MLS goal of the season and his fourth across all competitions, after he scored the opening tally in Wednesday’s Leagues Cup Final vs. Club León. It marked the fourth assist of the season for Smith and second helper for Atencio.

Bruin made it 2-0 in the 55th minute when an errant pass lead to an interception by Raúl Ruidíaz, who got past two defenders near the six-yard box and attempted to play a ball to himself that was deflected to the head of Bruin, who lobbed it into the back of the net. It marked Bruin’s second goal of 2021 and 73rd career strike in MLS regular-season play, good for 10th among active players.

Sporting Kansas City brought one back in the 60th minute when a free kick found the feet of Johnny Russell, who was able to take a touch and fire a low shot that found its way between the legs of Stefan Frei.

Brian Schmetzer’s side concludes its four-match road stretch across all competitions on Wednesday, September 29 with a trip to face the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium (7:30 p.m. PT / FOX 13+, Prime Video, 1090 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM). The club then returns home on Sunday, October 3 to face the third-place Colorado Rapids at Lumen Field (7:00 p.m. PT / FOX 13+, Prime Video, 1090 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).

MATCH NOTES

With tonight’s win, Seattle currently sits two points above Sporting Kansas City at the top of the Western Conference standings, with one game in-hand. Seattle has nine matches remaining to play in the 2021 MLS regular season.

Sounders FC is now 10-8-4 all-time against SKC in regular-season play, including a 5-4-2 mark on the road.

The result marks the first time the Rave Green have won a game in Kansas City since May 8, 2013.

The win puts Seattle at eight road wins on the season, tying the most away wins since 2018 and second most all-time in club history (MLS era). The Rave Green also had eight road wins in 2014.

Cristian Roldan recorded his third MLS goal of the season and 25th career strike in regular-season play. It marked the second tally in as many games across all competitions, after Roldan scored the opening goal in Wednesday’s League’s Cup Final against Club León.

Will Bruin scored his second goal of the season to make it 2-0 in the second half. It marked his 73rd career MLS regular-season goal, ranking 10th among active players.

Brad Smith’s assist on Roldan’s goal marked his fourth of the season (two shy of his career high), to go along with three goals in 2021.

Josh Atencio recorded his second career assist (both in 2021) on Roldan’s goal.

Head Coach Brian Schmetzer deployed a 5-3-2 formation this evening, featuring strikers Will Bruin and Raúl Ruidíaz above a three-man midfield of João Paulo, Josh Atencio and Cristian Roldan. Wingbacks Alex Roldan and Brad Smith flanked centerbacks Yeimar Gómez Andrade, Xavier Arreaga and Nouhou.

Three-first half goals lead home side to victory

 

TACOMA, Wash. – Orlando Pride (7-6-7, 28 points) was defeated on the road by second-seeded OL Reign (11-7-2, 35 points) on Sunday night, falling 3-0 in a rainy match in Tacoma.

 

The home side was led by a brace from forward Eugenie Le Sommer, as well as a goal from striker Bethany Balcer.

 

The Pride will now turn their attention to their upcoming match with the Chicago Red Stars, who the team travels to face on Saturday evening at SeatGeek Stadium.

“First of all, credit to the Reign. They came out definitely on fire and their shape gave us a bit of a problem. I think that was on us as coaches, we have to adjust to that a little bit sooner because their numbers were just overwhelming us, particularly in the midfield. I think we’ve got to do a little bit better of a job dealing with that as coaches to put our team in a better position to be successful…Once we switched shapes, I think it became a more straight-forward matchup and allowed us to match-up a little bit better with them defensively.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Houston Dash returned to league play with their largest victory of the season, a 4-0 triumph over Racing Louisville FC at Lynn Family Stadium earlier today. With the win, the Dash moved up the table into the sixth and final playoff spot with five games left in the regular season.

 

The Dash opened the scoring after forward Bri Visalli took advantage of a misplayed ball from the Louisville backline. After stealing the ball inside the attacking third, Visalli did all the work herself, snaking through the defense before ripping the ball past the keeper for her first career NWSL goal.

 

Houston doubled its lead in the 43rd minute, when forward Nichelle Prince crossed the ball into the box before falling to the feet of midfielder Kristie Mewis. The U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder, who was completely unmarked by the defense, found the upper right corner for her second goal of the season.

 

In addition to the two goals, the Dash created a number of opportunities in the first half. Houston’s first chance to score came in the 22nd minute, when defender Allysha Chapman crossed a ball into the 18-yard-box. Multiple Dash players got touches on the ball inside the box, before it finally went off a Louisville defender for a Houston corner. That corner found the head of defender Katie Naughton before sailing over the goal.

 

The Dash once again found themselves in front of the net with a chance to score as Mewis worked her way past the Louisville defense to receive a pass from forward Veronica Latsko. Mewis was able to get a shot off from the left side of the goal, however it was knocked down and secured by Louisville goalkeeper Michelle Betos.

 

The second half featured fewer chances for either side than the first half, however it was the Dash that once again took advantage when given the opportunity. After Latsko generated a shot on goal that was deflected by the Louisville keeper, a Mewis corner kick in the 42nd minute led to a scrum in front of the goal that ended when Naughton scored her third goal of the season.

 

The Dash continued the scoring onslaught late into the game, as Mewis and Prince once again connected for a goal, however it was Mewis who found Prince this time. Prince knocked the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net.

 

In addition to the four goals, the Dash won this game with stout defending. In her first match since starting for the U.S. Women’s National Team against Paraguay, goalkeeper Jane Campbell recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season.

 

For the Dash, the four goals in this match bring their total goals scored over their last two games to nine, as they defeated Tigres Femenil 5-1 in a friendly last Sunday.

 

Houston’s next match will once again come on the road against Kansas City on Saturday, October 2. That match will kick off at 7:00 pm and can be streamed live on Paramount Plus.

Montreal, – The Montreal Alouettes announced on Sunday that the team promoted Greg Quick to the Defensive Line Coach position.

 

Quick, who was the club’s Defensive and Special Teams Assistant, will replace Todd Howard, who was relieved of his duties.

 

“We would like to thank Todd for everything that he has done for the Alouettes these past years. We felt that we needed to make this change for the good of the team. Greg Quick’s defensive experience and expertise allow us to make this change in season,” declared Alouettes Head Coach Khari Jones.

 

Quick has racked up over 30 years of coaching experience, including eight in the CFL.

World Poker Tour announced today that the newest addition to the WPTDeepStacks event schedule will be at Choctaw Casino & Resort in Durant, Oklahoma from 27 October – 8 November.

 

A longtime World Poker Tour partner, this marks the first time a WPTDeepStacks event will be held at Choctaw Casino & Resort – Durant. The $1,100 buy-in WPTDeepStacks Choctaw Main Event is scheduled to run 5-8 November.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s recalled outfielder Luis Barrera from Triple-A Las Vegas and designated right-handed pitcher Michael Feliz for assignment, the club announced today.

 

Barrera made his Major League debut earlier this year as he went 1-for-5 (.200) during a four-game stint with the A’s from May 18 to 26. He has spent the balance of the season with Las Vegas where he hit .276 with 16 doubles, six triples, four home runs, 37 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 96 games. The 25-year-old left-handed hitter batted .329 with runners in scoring position and hit .355 in September. Barrera started 32 games in right field, 32 in center field, 23 in left field and three at designated hitter.

 

Feliz was claimed off waivers from Boston a week ago today and pitched in one game for the A’s last Wednesday against Seattle (0.1 ip, 1 h, 1 bb). He has a save, a 7.20 ERA and .313 opponents batting average in 21 relief appearances overall this year with Oakland, Boston, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.
