NEW YORK — The National Hockey League today released a list of players who are restricted free agents under Group 2, unrestricted free agents under Group 3 and Group 6 and unrestricted free agents by virtue of not receiving a qualifying offer.

 

Some of these players may recently have signed with their respective Clubs; however, their contracts had not yet been filed with the League.

‘Canes agree to terms with Cole

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion has played 595 career NHL games

 

RALEIGH, NC – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Ian Cole on a one-year, $2.9 million contract.

 

“Ian is a big, physical defenseman,” said Waddell. “We’re thrilled to add a veteran with his experience to our team.”

 

Cole, 32, skated in two games with Colorado last season before being traded to Minnesota. He then recorded eight points (1g, 7a) in 52 games during the regular season and played seven playoff games with the Wild. The 6’1″, 225-pound defenseman has registered 146 points (27g, 119a) in 595 career NHL games with St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Colorado and Minnesota since making his NHL debut with the Blues on Nov. 6, 2010.

 

Cole has tallied 24 points (1g, 23a) in 96 career NHL playoff games, including 12 points (1g, 11a) in 49 games to help the Penguins win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. Prior to turning professional, Cole tallied 65 points (17g, 48a) in 111 NCAA games with Notre Dame. The Ann Arbor, Mich., native was selected by St. Louis in the first round, 18th overall, of the 2007 NHL Draft.

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announce today that they have signed free agent forward Trevor Lewis.

 

TERM: One year

AAV: $800,000

 

Lewis, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, spent last season with Winnipeg where he netted five goals and added five assists for 10 points in 56 games. The two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Los Angeles Kings has played 730 career NHL games with 75 goals, 98 assists for 173 points and 173 penalty minutes in addition to his 87 playoffs games. The 6’1, 202lbs forward was originally drafted in the 1st round (17th overall) by Los Angeles in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled infielder Sergio Alcántara and selected right-handed pitcher Jake Jewell from Triple-A Iowa. Infielder Nico Hoerner has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain and right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott has been optioned to Iowa. To make room on the 40-man roster for Jewell, right-handed pitcher Kohl Stewart has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

 

Alcántara, 24, is in his third stint with the Cubs this season and has hit .171 (14-for-82) with 12 runs, three doubles, three triples, two home runs and five RBI in 39 games. First selected from Iowa, May 30, he was optioned back to Iowa, July 4, then was again on the major league roster, July 6-22. In 25 games with Iowa this season, Alcántara has hit .305 (25-for-82) with three doubles, three home runs, nine RBI and a .447 on-base percentage, drawing 21 walks to contribute to an .898 OPS.

 

Alcántara made his major league debut with the Tigers last season, appearing in 10 games and batting .143 (3-for-21) with a triple, home run and RBI while seeing time at both second base (six games) and third base (six games). He was claimed off waivers by Chicago, February 5 of this year prior to being outrighted, February 20.

 

Jewell, 28, is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA (10 ER/32.1 IP) and four saves in 23 relief appearances for Iowa this season, walking 13 and striking out 35 for an average of 9.7 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. He has allowed just three home runs in 129 batters faced and has recorded a 1.05 WHIP.

 

Jewell, who signed a minor league deal with Chicago in November 2020, is 0-1 with a 6.99 ERA (22 ER/28.1 IP) in 21 major league relief appearances with the Los Angeles Angels spanning the 2018-19 seasons. He was originally selected by the Angels in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of Northeast Oklahoma A&M. Jewell is 25-43 with 19 saves, one complete game, one shutout and a 4.80 ERA (288 ER/539.2 IP) in 181 minor league games, 77 as a starter. He has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen since 2018.

 

Hoerner, 24, has hit .313 (42-for-134) with 10 doubles, 14 RBI and a .388 on-base percentage in 39 games for Chicago this season.

 

Abbott, 25, has no record and an 8.03 ERA (11 ER/12.1 IP) in six relief appearances for Chicago this season. In 10 starts for Iowa this season, Abbott is 1-5 with a 7.21 ERA (39 ER/48.2 IP).

 

Stewart, 26, was placed on the 10-day injured list, July 6, with right elbow inflammation. He is 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA (8 ER/13.2 IP) in four games, three starts, for the Cubs this season.

Blue Jays acquire Hand

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired LHP Brad Hand from the Washington Nationals in exchange for C Riley Adams.

 

Hand, 31, has gone 5-5 with 21 saves and a 3.59 ERA over 41 outings for the Nationals this season. The left-handed reliever has been named an All-Star on three occasions (2017, 2018, 2019). The native of Minneapolis has also pitched for Miami, San Diego, and Cleveland throughout his 11-year career, combining for 126 saves, a 3.65 ERA, and 666 strikeouts over 651.1 innings of work.

 

Adams, 25, was selected by the Blue Jays in the third round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft and made his Major League debut with the club earlier this season. The 6-4, 246 lb. catcher picked up three hits in his 12 MLB games. The Encinitas, CA, native has hit .239 in 35 games with Triple-A Buffalo this year and owns a career .262 batting average over 286 Minor League contests.

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired INF/OF Joey Gallo, LHP Joely Rodriguez an­d cash considerations from the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Glenn Otto and infielders Ezequiel Duran, Trevor Hauver and Josh Smith.

 

Gallo, 27, was named to his second All-Star team earlier this season (also 2019) and is tied for fifth in the AL and tied for sixth in the Majors with 25 home runs while batting .223/.379/.490 (69-for-310) with 57R, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 55RBI, a .869 OPS and a Major League-leading 74 walks.

 

Originally selected by the Rangers in the supplemental first round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft (39th overall) out of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Gallo has hit .211 (385-for-1,826) with 319R, 74 doubles, 7 triples, 145HR and 317 RBI in 568 games over seven Major League seasons (2015-21), all with Texas.

 

Since 2017, his 138HR entering tonight’s play rank sixth in the Majors, trailing only Nelson Cruz (154), J.D. Martinez (151), Nolan Arenado (144), Eugenio Suarez (143) and Mike Trout (142). Additionally, Gallo has averaged 1HR every 12.27AB over that stretch, the second-best mark in the Majors (Trout-11.68) among players with at least 1,500 PA. He also posted totals of 41HR and 80RBI in 2017 and 40HR and 92RBI in 2018 and is one of just three players in the Majors to hit at least 40HR and record 80RBI in at least two different seasons since 2017 (also J.D. Martinez and Khris Davis).

 

Gallo, a 6’ 5”, 255 lb. left-handed hitter who throws with his right hand, won his first career Gold Glove Award in 2020, earning the honor for his play in right field in his first full year at the position (53G in the shortened season). Gallo led qualified MLB right fielders with an Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR) of 6.1, good for the fourth-highest mark in that category among all MLB fielders behind only Nolan Arenado (8.5), Kevin Kiermaier (7.7) and Trent Grisham (7.5). Last year he played 457.2 innings in the field (456.2 in RF and 1.0 in CF) and handled 123 chances without committing an error. Over his career Gallo has appeared at five positions, including 95G/85GS at first base (.995 fielding pct.), 92G/80GS at third base (.921), 156G/131GS in left field (.988), 55G/49GS in center field (.975) and 152G/151GS in right field (.986).

 

In 2019, Gallo was named to his first Midsummer Classic and homered in his only plate appearance in the game — a seventh-inning solo home run off Will Smith, which marked the AL’s final run of the evening in a 4-3 win.

 

Rodríguez, 29, went 1-3 with one save and a 5.93 ERA (27.1IP, 32H, 19R/18ER, 12BB, 30K, 3HR) in 31 relief appearances with Texas in 2021, holding left-handed batters to a .176/.282/.206 slash line. The left-handed pitcher missed the first 13 games of the season on the injured list with a left ankle sprain (March 29 – April 16).

 

In four Major League seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (2016-17) and Texas Rangers (2020-21), he has gone 2-5 with a 5.05 ERA (76.2IP, 85H, 51R/43ER, 36BB, 72K, 7HR) in 81 relief appearances. He also spent two seasons (2018-19) with the Chunichi Dragons of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball League, going 3-7 with a 1.85 ERA (87.2IP, 18ER) over 90 relief appearances in that span.

 

The Santo Domingo, D.R., native was originally signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as a non-drafted free agent on March 31, 2009. He was acquired by Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in exchange for LHP Antonio Bastardo on December 10, 2014. Rodríguez was then acquired by Texas from Philadelphia in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations on June 13, 2017.

 

Duran, 22, hit .290/.374/.533 (75-for-259) with 42R, 15 doubles, 6 triples, 12HR, 48RBI, 28BB and 12SB in 67 games with High-A Hudson Valley. Over four minor league seasons with the Yankees (2017-19, ’21), he hit .262/.330/.476 (206-for-785) with 137R, 40 doubles, 16 triples, 32HR, 116RBI and 34SB in 201 games. The San Juan de la Maguana, D.R., native was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2017.

 

Hauver, 22, made his professional debut this season with Low-A Tampa, hitting .288/.445/.498 (66-for-229) with 48R, 17 doubles, 2 triples, 9HR, 49RBI and 64BB in 66 games. The Chandler, Ariz., native was originally selected by the Yankees in the third-round of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University.

 

Otto, 25, combined to go 7-3 with a 3.33 ERA (75.2IP, 60H, 28ER, 17BB, 115K, 6HR) in 13 games (12 starts) with Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. In 41 career games (32 starts), the right-hander is 14-7 with a 3.07 ERA (167.1IP, 137H, 62R/57ER, 65BB, 227K) over four minor league seasons (2017-19, ’21). The Spring, Tex., native was originally drafted by the Yankees in the fifth round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Rice University.

 

Smith, 23, has combined to hit .324/.448/.641 (46-for-142) with 44R, 12 doubles, 3 triples, 9HR, 24RBI, 23BB and 17SB in 39 games with Low-A Tampa and High-A Hudson Valley. In two minor league seasons (2019, ’21), the left-handed hitter has batted .324/.449/.569 (82-for-253) with 61R, 18 doubles, 4 triples, 12HR, 39RBI, 48BB and 23SB in 72 games. The Baton Rouge, La., native was selected by the Yankees in the second round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Louisiana State University.

Miami Marlins acquire LHP Jesús Luzardo from Oakland Athletics

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired LHP Jesús Luzardo from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for OF Starling Marte and cash considerations.

 

Luzardo, 23, has appeared in 13 games this season for the Athletics, including six starts, going 2-4 with a 6.87 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 38.0 innings. He was 3-2 with a 4.12 ERA in 2020, ranking second amongst Major League rookies in strikeouts and innings pitched with 59 K’s in 59.0 innings. In parts of three Major League seasons, Luzardo is 5-6 with a 4.79 ERA in 31 games (15 starts). He has also notched two saves.

 

He is 16-9 with a 3.04 ERA in 54 career Minor League games (51 starts). He has struck out 260 hitters in 224.2 innings. Before exceeding his rookie limits in 2020, Luzardo was rated the No. 9 overall prospect by Baseball America and No. 12 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline.

 

Luzardo, born in Lima, Peru, was selected in the third-round (94th overall) by Washington in 2016 from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have acquired Minor League right-handed pitchers Noah Davis and Case Williams from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mychal Givens.

 

Williams, 19, was traded by the Rockies to the Reds, along with right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman, on Nov. 25, 2020 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Robert Stephenson and outfielder Jameson Hannah … was originally selected by the Rockies in the fourth round of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft out of Douglas County High School in Castle Rock, Colo., … has gone 2-5 with a 5.55 ERA (47.0 IP, 29 ER), 33 walks and 34 strikeouts in 11 starts and one relief appearance for Low-A Daytona this season.

 

Davis, 24, has gone 3-6 with a 3.60 ERA (65.0 IP, 26 ER), 35 walks and 77 strikeouts in 13 starts for High-A Dayton this season … has limited opponents to a .193 batting average, the lowest opponent batting average across High-A … did not pitch in 2020 due to the cancellation of the Minor League season … made 13 total starts between Rookie Level Billings and the Arizona League Reds in his first professional season in 2019, going 1-3 with a 3.19 ERA (42.1 IP, 15 ER) … was originally selected by the Reds in the 11th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of UC Santa Barbara.

 

Givens, 31, has gone 3-2 with a 2.73 ERA (29.2 IP, 9 ER) in 31 appearances with the Rockies in 2021 … was originally acquired by Colorado via trade with Baltimore on Aug. 30, 2020 in exchange for infielder Terrin Vavra, infielder Tyler Nevin and outfielder Mishael Deson … in 41 total appearances with the Rockies, went 4-2 with a 3.69 ERA (39.0 IP, 16 ER), 18 walks and 40 strikeouts … has gone 24-19 with a 3.36 ERA (375.0 IP, 140 ER), 147 walks and 446 strikeouts in 337 career relief appearances across parts of seven seasons with Baltimore (2015-2020) and Colorado (2020-21).
