RDR Promotions will be making a major fight announcement next week about the next show that will take place on Friday, September 17th in Philadelphia.

This Week in the CFL – Week 3

0

The Week 3 begins in Vancouver where the BC Lions will play their home opener against the Edmonton Elks. The game will be extra special as the BC Lions introduced Amar Doman as the new owner of the team on Wednesday afternoon and he will be in attendance at BC Place. The game will mark the first live sporting event in Vancouver to include fan attendance since March of 2020 and the Lions will be looking to make it two wins in a row. After dropping their first two games at home, the Edmonton Elks will be hoping for better fortune on the road. This will mark the 200th regular season game between BC and Edmonton. Kickoff is slated for 10 p.m. ET

McMahon Stadium will play host for Friday Night Football when the Montreal Alouettes take on the Calgary Stampeders beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET. After a Week 1 bye, Montreal looks to make it two wins in a row. Alouettes’ quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. owns a 3-0 record against the Stampeders. Meanwhile, Calgary is looking to avoid a 0-3 start and will have to do so with out two-time MOP winner, Bo Levi Mitchell, who broke his fibula.

Saturday features a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. ET at BMO Field. The Toronto Argonauts play in their home opener against the reigning Grey Cup champs, Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The teams clashed last week at IG Field where Winnipeg smothered the Toronto offence en route to a 20-7 win.  The Argonauts will make a change at quarterback with Nick Arbuckle making his first start in double blue. History can be made on Saturday with Mike Miller just needing two special teams tackles to become the league’s all-time leader.

To conclude Week 3, the Ottawa REDBLACKS return from their bye week to take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders beginning at 7 p.m. ET. Ottawa’s defence will be looking to slow down the Roughriders offence who have averaged 30+ points a game this season. Saskatchewan will be looking for their first 3-0 start since 2013 and their nineth regular season win in a row at Mosaic Stadium.

Edmonton at BC will be on TSN, ESPN2, BT Sport ESPN and Yare

Montreal at Calgary will be on TSN, RDS, ESPN+, BT Sport ESPN, and Yare

Winnipeg at Toronto will be on TSN, ESPN2 and Yare

Ottawa at Saskatchewan will be on TSN, RDS, ESPN+, BT Sport 2 and Yare

THROUGH EIGHT GAMES…

Five games have been comeback victories.

Every team that has committed less turnovers, have won their game.

Seven of eight teams who have won this year, have had the better average starting positions for their drives.

Home and visiting teams have each won four games so far this season.

In interlocking games (East vs. West) each division has three wins and three losses.

Four games have been decided in the final three minutes.

212,313 fans have attended games this season.

200th GAME BETWEEN BC AND EDMONTON

This is the 200th regular season game between the two. Edmonton has the edge going 115-80-4.

BC has started under .500 the last two years and are looking to go above .500 after three games for the first time since 2017.

Edmonton has won three consecutive games against BC. The average winning margin – 15.3 per game.

BC and Edmonton enter the game with the top offences. BC averages 418 net yards per game while Edmonton averages 365 net yards per game.

This game features the top-3 leading receivers so far this season:

BC | Lucky Whitehead | 11 Rec | 244 yards

BC | Bryan Burnham | 11 Rec | 213 yards

EDM | Derel Walker | 14 Rec | 174 yards

Active Leaders Meet: Thursday’s contest will be a meeting of the CFL’s active receiving yards leaders with No. 1 Greg Ellingson (7,318) going against the No. 2 in Burnham (5,864). Ellingson’s streak of 5 straight 1,000-yard seasons appears to be in jeopardy following a slow start (52 yards in 2 games).

COLLAROS’ HOT START IN WINNIPEG

Since Zach Collaros made his way to Winnipeg at the trade deadline in 2019, all he has done is win games, going 6-0 in games he has started.

The streak began in the final game of the season for the Bombers against Calgary and continued through the Grey Cup (three games) and the first two games of the 2021 Season.

During that span Collaros has completed 70.9% of his passes (117 of 165), passed for 1,360 yards and eight touchdowns to go along with two interceptions.

MONTREAL VISITS CALGARY

The all-time series is as close as any. Calgary has the slight edge at 41-38-1, however since 2014 it’s even at 6-6.

The last seven times these two teams have played, five of them were decided by nine points or less and the last three times they have played, they each have been decided in the final three minutes

The last-time Montreal played in Calgary, the Alouettes won 40-34 in overtime.

Vernon Adams Jr. has a record of 3-0 against the Stampeders.

Calgary is looking to avoid an 0-3 start, the last time that occurred was in 2002.

QUICK SLANTS

Mike Miller needs two tackles to become the all-time special teams tackles. Miller currently has 189 and the current leader, Jason Arakgi has 190. Miller has four STT this season.

REDBLACKS QB Matt Nichols has a 7-4 career record against Saskatchewan.

Nichols’ teammate Avery Williams is tied for the league-lead with 14 tackles, despite only playing one game.

Since rejoining the CFL, Ottawa and Saskatchewan are 6-6. Of the six years, one team has swept the other four times and two splits.

Teams coming off a bye this year are 1-0 thanks to Montreal. Ottawa will attempt to make it 2-0 this week. Last season, teams coming off a bye were 10-15.

William Stanback and John White join Brady Oliveira as the only running backs to rush for 100+ yards in a game. During Week 2, Stanback registered 112 yards and White had 111 yards.

The last time both Calgary and Edmonton began the season 0-2 was in 1966. If both teams lose this week, it’ll be the first time ever that both teams begin 0-3.

Red Zone: While the Elks rank second in net offence (363.5 yards per game), their red zone offence has held them back. In six trips, Edmonton has found the end zone only once and turned the ball over twice.

Bombers, Riders 2-0: The last time Winnipeg and Saskatchewan both started 2-0 in the same season was 2003 (Khari Jones and Nealon Greene were the quarterbacks).

The two clubs have NEVER both started 3-0 in the same year throughout their shared history which dates all the way back to 1936.

The last time Saskatchewan started 3-0 was in 2013 – the same year they won their last Grey Cup.

Scoring Oddities: Saskatchewan has the CFL’s top-scoring offence despite ranking sixth in net offence (336.5 yards per game), and Edmonton ranks eighth in scoring while boasting the No. 2 offence (363.5). The difference has been turnovers as Saskatchewan leads the league with a +6 turnover differential and 24 points off T/Os. Edmonton has yet to force a turnover in two games.

The last-time Toronto/Winnipeg met back-to-back was in 2018 where the Winnipeg Blue Bombers swept the two-game series. However, in 2013 Toronto swept both games. Fittingly, the two teams split the back-to-back series in 2009.

Nick Arbuckle will get his first start in double blue on Saturday afternoon. It will be his eighth career start and he is 4-3 in his career. In his last start, he set a career-high with four touchdown passes.

Winnipeg receiver Kenny Lawler leads the league with 14 receptions this season.

The last time Calgary started a Canadian QB was in 2017 when Andrew Buckley started for the Stampeders. Before that, Greg Vavra did so in 1985.

Edmonton is looking to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2010.

Cubs select RHP Adrian Sampson from Triple-A Iowa, designate OF Johneshwy Fargas for assignment

0

CINCINNATI – The Chicago Cubs today selected right-handed pitcher Adrian Sampson from Triple-A Iowa and designated outfielder Johneshwy Fargas for assignment.

Sampson will wear uniform number 56 and will start today’s 12:35 p.m. ET game against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Sampson, 29, is 4-5 with a 4.96 ERA (45 ER/81.2 IP) in 16 games (14 starts) for Iowa this season, walking 33 and striking out 61. He has allowed three runs or less in seven of his last eight starts dating to June 29. Sampson signed a minor league contract with Chicago in May of this year after pitching for the Lotte Giants in the Korean Baseball Organization in 2020, going 9-12 with a 5.40 ERA (78 ER/130.0 IP).

Sampson is 6-12 with a 5.71 ERA (97 ER/153.0 IP) in all or part of three major league seasons with Seattle (2016) and Texas (2018-19). He made his major league debut with the Mariners in 2016, appearing in one game, and saw his most extensive big league action with the Rangers in 2019, going 6-8 with a 5.89 ERA (82 ER/125.1 IP) in 35 games (15 starts) with 36 walks and 101 strikeouts.

The six-foot two-inch Sampson was originally drafted by the Pirates in the fifth round of the 2012 draft out of Bellevue (Wash.) Community College. He was traded to Seattle for left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ, at the 2015 trade deadline.

Fargas, 26, has hit .269 (7-for-26) with a triple and two RBI in 13 games for the Cubs since he was selected off waivers from the New York Mets, July 23 of this year.

A’s place RHP Bassitt on injured list; select RHP Blackburn from Las Vegas

0

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s placed right-handed pitcher Chris Bassitt on the 10-day injured list with a right facial fracture and selected right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

Bassitt was injured in the second inning of the game last night at Chicago when he was hit by a Brian Goodwin line drive. He is 12-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 25 starts and is currently leading the American League in wins. Bassitt, who was named to his first All-Star team this year, also tops the AL in innings pitched (151.0) and games started, ranks second in opponents OPS (.628), slugging percentage (.351) and winning percentage (.750), third in ERA, on-base percentage (.277) and batting average (.219) and sixth in strikeouts (154).

Blackburn has spent the entire season at Las Vegas where he is 4-7 with a 4.97 ERA and .311 opponents batting average in 17 games, including 16 starts. He has struck out 80 and walked 27 in 88.2 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander ranks second in the Triple-A West in innings pitched, tied for second in games started and fifth in ERA and strikeouts. Blackburn made his Major League debut with Oakland in 2017 and has spent parts of each of the previous four seasons with the A’s, going 5-7 with a 5.69 ERA in 21 games, including 18 starts. Blackburn had two stints with Oakland last year and made one start in the second game of the Sept. 26 doubleheader against Seattle when he allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks in 2.1 innings for the loss.

Quakes extend unbeaten streak to nine; Wondo makes 400th MLS appearance

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes and Minnesota United FC played to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night at PayPal Park. The draw extends the Quakes’ unbeaten streak to a league-best nine matches and sees them climb to ninth place in the Western Conference, level on points with seventh place Portland and eighth place LAFC. Chris Wondolowski made his 400th MLS appearance in the match, entering as a second-half substitute.

San Jose opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Cristian Espinoza received a long switch from Marcos Lopez and sent a low cross across the six-yard box, deflecting off a back-tracking defender and into his own net.

The Quakes dropped to 10 men in the 21st minute after Nathan was shown a straight red card. Minnesota capitalized on the man advantage immediately, finding the equalizer one minute later through Wil Trapp.

San Jose played nearly 70 minutes plus stoppage time with 10 men and were able to secure a point.

The Earthquakes will now travel to southern California to face the LA Galaxy in the third California Clasico of the season. The match kicks off from Dignity Health Sports Park at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, and via radio on KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

GAME NOTES

The Earthquakes now hold a 5-7-8 record (23 pts.) during the 2021 MLS regular season and are currently in ninth place in the Western Conference.

The Quakes extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches (2-0-7). It marks the club’s first unbeaten stretch of 9+ matches in a single season since the final nine matches of 2012 (5-0-4).

San Jose is now 4-3-2 all-time against Minnesota, including a 2-2-1 record at PayPal Park.

The Quakes have now allowed one or fewer goals in eight consecutive matches.

Forward Chris Wondolowski made his 400th MLS appearance, entering the match in the 86th minute. He became just the seventh player, fifth non-goalkeeper, and first forward to reach the milestone.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH MATIAS ALMEYDA

On tactical decisions made after the red card:

“When I make substitutions, I am sending a message. The message is that I want to win. It’s simple. The players were great interpreters and we corrected things during halftime. Defensively, the players executed perfectly. We had our chances to score from counterattacks.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER LUCIANO ABECASIS

On the team’s mindset after Nathan’s ejection:

“It was a valuable point with how the match turned out in the end and the fact that we were playing for a long time with one less player. It was clear by the team’s ambition that we wanted the three points because we needed them. The red card limited us a lot, but it forced the best out of each of us and we were able to hold onto the game and create chances on top of that. I think that the draw was fair given we were one man down. They had their chances and we had ours. We spoke in the locker room about staying focused, that we needed everyone’s maximum effort. That’s what we did, and I think we left a really good image with one less player.”

On giving advice to his substitute Carlos Fierro:

“I didn’t speak much with him because we had already chatted in the locker room during halftime. Matias spoke to us, went over the changes we had to make for those of us playing outside, and for those that were going in to play in those positions, Matias asked them to pay attention. Carlos was one of them, so I think it was a credit to him for understanding it fast and credit to the coach for letting him know and preparing the moves beforehand because we knew that the game could happen that way.”

THREE POINTS: Houston Dynamo FC travel to Utah to face Real Salt Lake

0

NEED TO KNOW:

Dynamo travel to Utah for midweek match against Real Salt Lake

Houston and Salt Lake enter with back-to-back draws in the previous meetings this season

Houston host FC Dallas at BBVA Stadium on Aug. 21

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC begin the week with a road trip to Utah later today to face Real Salt Lake at 9 p.m. CT at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Houston looks to bounce back after falling to the Colorado Rapids last Saturday, their first loss at BBVA Stadium this season. Midfielder Adalberto “Coco” Carrasquilla earned his first MLS start and his second consecutive appearance since signing with the club on loan on Aug. 6. Forward Maxi Urruti and Ari Lassiter also returned to action and the midfield will have additional depth on Saturday with the return of Darwin Ceren.

The Dynamo and Salt Lake have split the points in the previous two meetings, beginning with the 1-1 draw on June 26 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Justen Glad gave Salt Lake an early lead, but Houston responded in the opening minutes of the second half after Urruti tallied his sixth goal of the season. The Dynamo hold a slight edge over Utah in the all-time series with a 12-11-9 record.

Salt Lake enter Wednesday’s game with two victories in their last three outings at home. Bobby Wood led the team to a 1-0 victory over Austin FC on Saturday with his second goal of the season. The Dynamo backline will be tasked with containing midfielder Damir Kreilach who has scored eight goals and has tallied five assists this season. The attacking duo of Rubio Rubin and Albert Rusnak have combined for nine goals and seven assists.

Houston returns to BBVA Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 21 to host FC Dallas.

Here are three key points ahead of today’s game:

DYNAMO TRAVEL WEST PRIOR TO HOMESTAND: The Dynamo look to build momentum prior to hosting their in-state rival, FC Dallas, on Saturday. Wednesday’s game is the final road game of the month and the final hurdle prior to a four-game homestand. Houston will look to capitalize on their longest homestand of the year and earn key points to climb back into the playoff race. The Dynamo currently sit five points behind the Timbers in the seventh and final playoff spot. The homestand will begin with FC Dallas on Saturday and feature matchups against two direct rivals for the postseason, Minnesota United and the Timbers. The homestand ends with Austin’s first visit to BBVA Stadium on Sept. 11

COCO KEY IN MIDFIELD: Dynamo midfielder Adalberto “Coco” Carrasquilla earned his first MLS start last Saturday and the 22-year-old seemingly solidified a starting role after a 90-minute performance. Coco led the team with 12 recoveries and also led the midfield with three interceptions. Offensively, Coco finished with one key pass and five shots against the Rapids. The Panamanian midfielder earned his debut on the road on Aug. 7 and looks to lead the team to their first victory away from BBVA Stadium on Wednesday.

SALT LAKE FINDS FORM AT HOME: Salt Lake enter Wednesday’s game with back-to-back victories in their last two outings at Rio Tinto Stadium. Salt Lake has outscored their opponents 4-0 in that run, largely due to a 3-0 victory over the Rapids on July 24. This is the final game at Rio Tinto Stadium for Real Salt Lake prior to a two-game stretch on the road, beginning with Saturday’s Rocky Mountain Cup showdown with the Rapids. Salt Lake enter the game six points ahead of the Dynamo in the table with 24 points, with 16 of those points earned at home.
