CFL Preview: Lions clash with RedBlacks in the Nation’s Capital

0

OTTAWA — Week 4 action will continue this Saturday night with the BC Lions travelling to TD Place to take on the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

Through two games so far into this young season, the story of the 2021 Ottawa REDBLACKS has been the performance of their defence.

After holding the Edmonton Elks to just 110 rushing yards and hauling in three interceptions, highlighted by the impressive performance of Abdul Kanneh, who had two of those picks, the team followed it up again against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Saskatchewan scored 23 points against Ottawa in Week 2, the most the undefeated Riders have been able to tally so far, but it did not reflect the challenge Ottawa’s defence imposed. One of the reasons why Ottawa was able to make things difficult for Saskatchewan was their ability to end drives, only allowing one scoring drive in 29 possessions.

While the REDBLACKS offence has yet to find peak efficiency so far this season, there have been areas of success, primarily their ability to keep teams guessing while they’re on offence.

After being held touchdown-less against the Elks, the REDBLACKS rushing attack found the end zone against a very formidable Roughriders defence with DeVonte Dedmon.

Of the REDBLACKS players’ ability to generate a big play, R.J. Harris was the sparkplug the REDBLACKS’ offence needed last week. Recording over 100 receiving yards on the night and hauling in an incredible catch, the Matt Nichols-R.J. Harris connection will pose a threat to the BC secondary. This is something Lions’ head coach, Rick Campbell has his eye on ahead of Saturday.

“We’ll game plan, but the focus really has to be on us and making sure we got all our ducks in a row, so to speak,” said Campbell.

BC’s defence has also made a name for themselves in their own right as in three games so far this season, the Lions have recorded an interception or more in every one of them. Sitting atop the CFL in takeaways with six on the campaign, including four alone against the Calgary Stampeders, BC’s ball-hawkers have come to play.

Saturday will also see Rick Campbell return to his old Ottawa stomping ground; the team his head coaching career started with.

“I think it won’t be a big deal,” said Campbell on the 1st and Now BC Lions podcast. “That was a big part of my life. That was my first time ever being a head coach, so I appreciate all that. I’m sure it’ll be an emotional thing when it happens, but honestly, I’m kind of on a one-track mind right now just finding a way to win a game.”

Campbell joined the REDBLACKS coaching staff as the first head coach in franchise history during the 2014 inaugural season. Prior to filling that role, Campbell spent time with Edmonton, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders. Having spent five years in the nation’s capital, Campbell is very familiar with the team’s touchdown tradition. With that in mind, it is something he wants to minimize this week.

“We’ll keep that touchdown chainsaw quiet this week,” said Campbell.

On the offensive side of the ball, Campbell is looking forward to what he believes will be a solid performance from his playmakers. Having been two types of games: a nail-biter and a shootout, Campbell knows his offence, led by Michael Reilly and the CFL’s leading receiver Lucky Whitehead, can run with any defence in the league.

“I think we have a lot of weapons, I think we’ve moved the ball really well at times, we haven’t cashed in on touchdowns as much as we’d like,” said Campbell. “We always want to be able to run the ball effectively that’s an important part of it.”

You can catch kickoff on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. ET on TSN and ESPN+. You can also follow along with all the action on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

PREVIEW: Orlando City Hosts Inter Miami CF in Heineken Rivalry Week Match

Lions look for sixth-consecutive result on Friday

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City SC (9-4-7, 34 points) hosts intrastate foes Inter Miami CF (6-9-4, 22 points) as part of MLS Rivalry Week, presented by Heineken, on Friday, Aug. 27 at Exploria Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET.

The match will be nationally broadcast on ESPN and ESPN Deportes, while being transmitted on 96.9 The Game in English and Acción 97.9FM, 810AM in Spanish. Tickets are available here or by calling (855) ORL-CITY.

“The boys have good energy preparing for the derby. We have played Miami already twice this year and they have improved results [recently]. They have some changes that we can see in the way they’re playing,” Head Coach Oscar Pareja said ahead of the match. “We have the opportunity now to fight for those three points that aside from it being a derby, are important for our position in the standings. That’s what we’re looking forward to now, trying to get a good game and get those points. That’s no doubt what we want”

City will look for its sixth-consecutive result on Friday, while looking to remain unbeaten against its neighbors to the south this season. The Lions battled to a come-from-behind victory on June 25 at DRV PNK Stadium before playing to a 1-1 draw with the Herons earlier this month at Exploria Stadium.

The Lions enter Friday’s fixture following a 1-0 victory over Chicago Fire FC this past Saturday in downtown Orlando. Benji Michel scored the eventual game-winner in the 51st minute of play, with goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar tallying five saves to earn the first clean sheet of his MLS career.

Nani leads City with nine goals this season, followed by Michel with four. Mauricio Pereyra holds the team-high in assists with eight, with Nani following right behind with six helpers of his own.

Inter Miami comes into the matchup following a 3-1 victory over Toronto FC this past weekend at DRV PNK Stadium. A brace from Rodolfo Pizarro and a finish from 2020 MLS SuperDraft selection Robbie Robinson propelled the home side to their fourth-consecutive victory in Fort Lauderdale.

Gonzalo Higuaín leads the Herons with eight finishes on the year, followed by Robinson with four. Higuaín also holds the team-high in assists, with five to his credit.

Following Friday’s fixture, the Lions will close out a three-game home stint on Saturday, Sept. 4 when they host the 2020 MLS Cup Champions Columbus Crew SC at Exploria Stadium.

Cristian Roldan and Raúl Ruidíaz called into International Duty

Two of Seattle’s 2021 MLS All-Stars have been called-up to play for their respective national teams in upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches

SEATTLE, WASH. – Seattle Sounders FC players Cristian Roldan and Raúl Ruidíaz have been called into international duty and are set to join the United States and Peru, respectively, for upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches.

Roldan, 26, has 25 career caps for the U.S. Men’s national team, including five during the squad’s Concacaf Gold Cup-winning run this year, assisting on two goals. This is the first time in his career he has been called-up for World Cup Qualifying matches, having previously competed in friendlies, Gold Cup and Nations League matches. The United States takes on El Salvador on September 2, Canada on September 5 and Honduras on September 8. Roldan has scored twice for the Rave Green in 2021 and has yet to lose any game he has appeared in this year in all competitions.

Ruidíaz, 31, has 47 career caps for Peru, 19 of which were starts, and has appeared in four matches so far for the country’s 2022 World Cup Qualifying campaign. Previously, Ruidíaz made 11 appearances during Peru’s 2018 World Cup Qualifiers and two appearances in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The Lima native looks to add to his tally of four career goals when La Blanquirroja takes on Uruguay on September 2, Venezuela on September 5 and Brazil on September 9. Ruidíaz has scored 14 goals for the Rave Green this year, the most in MLS.

Both Roldan and Ruidíaz started in last night’s 2021 MLS All-Star Game in Los Angeles, alongside their Seattle teammates Nouhou, João Paulo, Yeimar Gómez Andrade and Alex Roldan. The six Seattle starters matched the All-Star Game record for starters from one team against a foreign opponent, first set in 2006 when D.C. United had six players in the starting lineup vs. Chelsea.

After winning three road matches in seven days, Seattle returns to the Emerald City for a showdown against archrival Portland on Sunday, August 29 (7:30 p.m. PT / ESPN, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).

White Sox reinstate Carlos Rodón from injured list, option Danny Mendick to Triple-A Charlotte

0

TORONTO – Prior to today’s series finale at Toronto, the Chicago White Sox reinstated All-Star left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodón from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Danny Mendick to Class AAA Charlotte.

Rodón, 28, was placed on the injured list on August 11 (retroactive to August 8) with left shoulder fatigue. He has gone 9-5 with a 2.38 ERA (29 ER/109.2 IP), 160 strikeouts (13.13 per 9.0 IP) and a .189 (75-397) opponents average over 19 starts this season.

Among American League pitchers with at least 100.0 IP, Rodón ranks first in strikeouts per 9.0 IP, WHIP (0.96), opponents average and opponents OPS (.566) and second behind teammate Lance Lynn in ERA.

Mendick, 27, is batting .217 (33-152) with five doubles, two home runs, 20 RBI and 13 runs scored in 66 games over five stints with the White Sox in 2021.

CFL Preview: Alouettes, Ti-Cats Kick Off Week 4 in Montreal

0

MONTREAL — Coming off their bye week, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will travel to Percival Molson Stadium on Friday to take on the Montreal Alouettes in hopes to get their first win of the early campaign.

Entering Week 4, the Tiger-Cats have yet to win a contest but it’s still only a few weeks into the year and as we know, it’s a long campaign and there’s plenty of football yet to be played.

While their attempt to climb the East Division standings will by no means be insurmountable, their first game will not be easy as they will take on Vernon Adams Jr. and the Alouette offence.

Adams Jr., 28, spent time with the Tiger-Cats organization during the 2018 season under then-head coach, June Jones. After being released by the Tabbies, the former Oregon Duck has since flourished in his Alouette threads. In 2019, Adams exploded onto the CFL scene. Recording 3,942 passing yards and 394 rushing yards for a combined 36 touchdowns, his mobility is something Tiger-Cats’ head coach, Orlando Steinauer acknowledged.

“You’re always going to prepare for your opponent and have a plan,” said Steinauer. “He’s playing confident. Khari is doing a great job of putting him in situations where he can digest and anytime you can ad-lib, that’s just on the player. He’s just a player who makes plays and we’re definitely aware of it, but if you spend too much time on that, you’re spending time less on things that you believe in and what you want to do so it has to be a nice balance.”

Tasked this week to contain Adams Jr. to the pocket will be the Tiger-Cats linebacking core of Kameron Kelly, Simoni Lawrence and Jovan Santos-Knox, who spoke about the challenge Saturday’s game brings.

“It’s a great challenge, he’s a great player,” said Santos-Knox. “He can extend plays and make average plays look great just with his skillset, so it’s a challenge as a defence and as a linebacker group, you know, it’s our job to try and bottle him in.”

Looking inward, Steinauer also took the time to speak about the play of his offensive line, a unit that has struggled so far.

“We haven’t been the same, it’s hard to gel on a bye week,” said Steinauer. “We’ve played two games, we’ve had training camp, but the way we look now is not what we looked like in training camp. We’re just working through it. We’re going to go out there and be a no-excuse football team and we’re going out there expecting to win just like every team does,” he added.

Behind that offensive line this week who will be Dane Evans. Evans, who will make his first start since the 2019 Grey Cup over the inured Jeremiah Masoli, talked about what they have to do differently this week.

“We have to be physical and we just have to play our game,” said Evans. We know what it is, we read the news, we started 0-2, but we’re finally being able to play in the East and we’re looking forward to it,” he added.

With just a pair of games played between the Als and the Ticats respectively, Montreal has gained 154.5 more yards of offence than Hamilton. Even though the Ticats’ offensive production is down relative to past seasons, Alouettes’ head coach, Kahari Jones is not taking them lightly.

“We know who they are and what they’re about,” said Jones. “We know they’re a good team, they still have a lot of those same pieces from a team that went 15-3. We’re preparing for a really good Hamilton Ticat team…it’s tough at the start of the season when you haven’t played in a year and you’re still kind of getting your bearings…we’re going to prepare for the best Hamilton Ticat team that they can be,” Jones added.

One area of their game that the Alouette defence will look to sure up this week is their discipline. After being flagged 16 times for a total of 171 yards against Calgary, Adarius Pickett knows the team has some work to do on that end.

“That game was tough, tough game, lot of penalties and stuff like that,” said Pickett.

Definitely got to be more disciplined, definitely got to listen to each other more and stuff like that,” he added.

Friday will also mark the first home game for the Alouettes, something that Chris Ackie can’t help but be excited about.

“The biggest thing that I’d say that I missed was the fans,” said Ackie. “We know in 2019 when we were pretty much the ‘comeback kids’, the stadium was electric. The fans were going crazy, the night games, they had their cell phones out with the white lights and just create a whole ambiance within the stadium. Probably looking forward to getting back to that and bringing football back to Montreal.”

Kickoff is set for Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET on TSN and ESPNews. You can also follow along with all the action on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

TICATS TANGLE WITH THE ALOUETTES

This is the first East Division matchup for both teams entering Week 4 play.

The last regular season home game for the Alouettes was October 26, 2019 – 671 days between regular season home games.

Hamilton is coming off a bye and have won four of the last six games following a bye.

The Tiger-Cats has won seven of the last 11 games against Montreal and five of their last six visits to Molson Stadium.

Hamilton is looking to avoid an 0-3 start for the first time since 2017. Last year, Hamilton was 7-1 versus East Division teams. The lone loss came against Montreal.

Montreal has been good coming off a loss. In their past five losses, the Alouettes won the next game all five times.

Last season, Brandon Banks feasted against the Alouettes. In three games he registered 439 receiving yards, on 25 receptions and three touchdowns. Banks registered 201 yards, 152 yards and 86 yards in those games.

Masoli started two of those games against Montreal and each game registered 400+ passing yards. In the other game, Dane Evans started he passed for 379 yards and four touchdown passes.

Montreal leads the league in rushing with 155.5 yards per game and Hamilton allows the highest rushing average, 6.2 yards per rush.

RICK CAMPBELL RETURNS TO TD PLACE

BC head coach Rick Campbell will make his return to Ottawa after coaching the first six seasons of the Ottawa REDBLACKS’ existence.

During those six seasons, Campbell led the team to four playoff appearances, three Grey Cup appearances and winning a Grey Cup in 2016.

The Grey Cup victory was the first since 1976 for an Ottawa team.

Campbell finished with a record of 44-62-2.

As a REDBLACKS coach, Campbell was 5-7 versus the BC Lions.

Campbell’s current quarterback, Michael Reilly is 7-3 against Ottawa in his career.

MAIER’S FIRST START, FIRST WIN

In his first-career start, Jake Maier passed for 304 yards and a touchdown to help get the Calgary Stampeders in the win column with a 28-22 victory over Montreal.

Maier became the 37th player to pass for 300+ yards in his CFL debut. Of those 37 to manage that feat, he became the 18th to do so in a win.

Interestingly, of those 18 players, only three players were Calgary Stampeders. The two before him were Jeff Garcia in 1995 and current teammate of Maier, Bo Levi Mitchell in 2013.

Below are the stat lines from those games:

1995 | Jeff Garcia | 26 of 34 passing | 445 yards | 2 TDs

2013 | Bo Levi Mitchell | 29 of 33 passing | 376 yards | 3 TDs

SPECIAL TEAMS TACKLES BENCHMARK

Riverview, New Brunswick native, Mike Miller recorded three Special Teams Tackles in the game on Saturday against Toronto Argonauts to become the league’s All-Time leader, passing Jason Arakgi.

Miller has played in 161 games and registering 192 special teams tackles.  In those 161 games he has had 53 games multiple tackles and at least one special teams tackle in 109 of those games.

The special teams ace also shares the CFL record with seven special teams tackles in a single game. He managed this feat on July 5, 2019 against the Ottawa REDBLACKS. He shares it with Paul Clatney (CGY, 1991), Terry Wright (HAM, 1991), Brendan Rogers (WPG, 1994), Norman Bradford (SHR, 1995), Donovan Gans (BHM, 1995) and Darren Jackson (OTT, 2003).

QUICK SLANTS

Get to the QB: No team who has allowed a sack on a drive has scored a touchdown this year.

58% of games this year have been decided in the final three minutes.

Ottawa’s Avery Williams is on a torrid pace this season with 23 tackles in two games – 11.5 tackles per game. He leads the league in tackles through three weeks and Canadian Jordan Williams is second with 20 tackles.

Punting Battle: Jon Ryan leads the league with 49.4 yards per punt this year. However, Richie Leone leads the league with 43.9 yards net punting average. Only two players finished a season with a 40+ yard net punting average: Josh Miller 40.7 yards (1995) and Damon Duval 40.2 yards (2006).

As a league, kickers are 8 of 14 (57%) on 50+ yard field goals. Three kickers have made multiple: Sean Whyte (3/3), Lewis Ward (2/3) and Boris Bede (2/4). The record for most 50+ yard field goals made in a season is eight held by J.T. Hay (CGY, 1986) and Carlos Huerta (BAL, 1995).

Saskatchewan and Calgary have not missed a field goal attempt this season each going a perfect 9/9.

Week 3 set new season-highs in receiving yards and rushing yards in a game. Greg Ellingson snagged nine receptions for 148 receiving yards. It marked his 24th career game with 100+ yards. His teammate, James Wilder Jr., recorded 127 yards rushing on 22 carries.

Winnipeg’s Kenny Lawler and Saskatchewan’s Kyran Moore lead the league with 19 receptions each. BC’s Bryan Burnham leads the league with an average reception of 18.8 yards (minimum eight receptions).
