Seven From Sunday – Kickoff Weekend

0

A look at seven statistical highlights from games played during the 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. ET windows on Sunday, September 12, the first week of the 2021 season.

  • With two games remaining in Week 1, eight games have been within one score (eight points) in the fourth quarter while two teams overcame deficits of at least 10 points to win: the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (12 points) and PITTSBURGH STEELERS (10).

For the third time in the past four seasons, a game on Kickoff Weekend has gone to overtime. Cincinnati defeated Minnesota, 27-24, in overtime and marked the first regular-season game in NFL history with a game-tying score with no time remaining in regulation and a game-winning score with no time remaining in overtime.

  • Jacksonville rookie quarterback TREVOR LAWRENCE, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, New York Jets rookie quarterback ZACH WILSON (No. 2), and New England rookie quarterback MAC JONES (No. 15) each made their first career starts on Kickoff Weekend. At least one rookie quarterback has started in Week 1 in 14 consecutive seasons, the longest streak in the NFL since at least 1950.

With three rookie quarterbacks starting in Week 1, 2021 joined the 2012 season (five rookie quarterbacks) as the only seasons since 1970 in which at least three rookie quarterbacks started in Week 1.

Four rookie quarterbacks – Jones, San Francisco’s TREY LANCE, Lawrence and Wilson – each threw their first-career touchdown passes in Week 1. It marks the most rookie quarterbacks to throw their first career touchdown passes in Week 1 since 1970, surpassing the 2012 (ROBERT GRIFFIN IIIANDREW LUCK and RUSSELL WILSON) and 1971 (SCOTT HUNTERARCHIE MANNING and JIM PLUNKETT) seasons.

Seven first- or second-year quarterbacks – Cincinnati’s JOE BURROW, the Los Angeles Chargers’ JUSTIN HERBERT, Philadelphia’s JALEN HURTS, Jones, Lawrence, Miami’s TUA TAGOVAILOA and Wilson – each started on Kickoff Weekend, tied with the 2013 and 2000 seasons for the second-most such starting quarterbacks in a season-opening week in the Super Bowl era. Only the 2012 season (10 quarterbacks) had more.

Lawrence passed for 332 yards in his NFL debut, the third-most passing yards by a No. 1 overall pick in his first career start in the Super Bowl era. Only CAM NEWTON (422 passing yards) and VINNY TESTAVERDE (369) had more.

Three rookie wide receivers that were each selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft – Cincinnati’s JA’MARR CHASE (No. 5 overall), Miami’s JAYLEN WADDLE (No. 6) and Philadelphia’s DEVONTA SMITH (No. 10) – each recorded their first career touchdown receptions on Kickoff Weekend.

This is the first season in the common-draft era in which three rookie wide receivers that were each selected in the first round of the NFL Draft registered a touchdown reception in Week 1.

  • With two games remaining, four quarterbacks – New Orleans’ JAMEIS WINSTON (five touchdown passes), Tampa Bay’s TOM BRADY (four), Arizona’s KYLER MURRAY (four) and Seattle’s RUSSELL WILSON (four) – have thrown at least four touchdown passes in Week 1. This is the first season in which at least four quarterbacks have registered four-or-more touchdown passes in Week 1 since 1970.

With two games remaining, 15 quarterbacks have recorded a passer rating of 100-or-higher in Week 1 (minimum 10 attempts), the second-most on Kickoff Weekend in NFL history, trailing only the 2018 season (18 quarterbacks).

  • Kansas City quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES passed for 337 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions for a 131.4 rating, while tight end TRAVIS KELCE had 76 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 33-29 win over Cleveland.

Making his 47th career start in Week 1, Mahomes has 14,489 career passing yards and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer KURT WARNER (14,372) for the most passing yards by a player in his first 50 career starts in NFL history.

In 47 career starts, Mahomes has 117 touchdown passes and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (116 touchdown passes) for the most touchdown passes by a player in his first 50 career starts in league annals.

Kelce recorded his 50th career touchdown reception in his 112th career game, surpassing VERNON DAVIS (115) as the fifth-fastest tight end to reach 50 touchdown receptions in NFL history.

  • Arizona quarterback KYLER MURRAY passed for 289 yards with a career-high four touchdowns and one interception for a 121.0 rating and added a rushing touchdown, while linebacker CHANDLER JONES totaled a career-high five sacks with two forced fumbles in the Cardinals’ 38-13 win at Tennessee.

Murray has four career games with at least three touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown, tied with JOSH ALLEN (four games) and JACK KEMP (four) for the most such games by a player in his first three seasons in NFL history.

Jones is the third player to record at least five sacks in a Week 1 game since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer DERRICK THOMAS (six sacks in 1998) and BILL GAY (5.5 sacks in 1983). He is the sixth player to record at least five sacks and two forced in a single game since 2002.

Jones, who had two games (Weeks 7 and 16) with four sacks during the 2019 season, is the fourth player since 1982 with three career games with at least four sacks, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers DERRICK THOMAS (four games) and REGGIE WHITE (three), as well as LESLIE O’NEAL (four).

  • Seattle quarterback RUSSELL WILSON recorded four touchdown passes with zero interceptions and a 152.3 rating in the Seahawks’ 28-16 win at Indianapolis.

Wilson has 11 career games with at least four touchdown passes and zero interceptions, surpassing TOM BRADY (10 games), Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING (10) and AARON RODGERS (10) for the most such games by a player in his first 10 seasons in league annals.

  • Other notable performances from Sunday include:
    • Carolina running back CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY recorded nine receptions and 187 scrimmage yards (98 rushing, 89 receiving) in the Panthers’ 19-14 win over the New York Jets.

McCaffrey has seven career games with at least 75 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer WALTER PAYTON (six games) for the third-most such games in the Super Bowl era. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer MARSHALL FAULK (11 games) and PRIEST HOLMES (nine) have more.

    • Tennessee wide receiver JULIO JONES recorded his 850th career reception in his 136th career game, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer MARVIN HARRISON (140 games) as the second-fastest player to reach 850 career receptions in NFL history. Only ANTONIO BROWN (133 games) reached the mark in fewer games.
    • Cincinnati rookie kicker EVAN MCPHERSON converted a 33-yard field goal with no time remaining in overtime in the Bengals’ 27-24 win over Minnesota. He is the second rookie kicker in NFL history to kick a game-winning field goal with no time remaining in overtime, joining JASON SANDERS (October 14, 2018).

MATCH RECAP: Pride Claim All Three Points in 3-1 Win Over Racing Louisville

Sydney Leroux ties league lead in goals; Alex Morgan scores in return
ORLANDO, Fla. – Behind three different goalscorers, the Orlando Pride (7-5-7, 28 points) earned three points at Exploria Stadium in a 3-1 victory over Racing Louisville FC (4-9-5, 17 points) on Saturday night. The victory served as the third-consecutive result for the Pride, who are 2-0-1 in their last three matches.

The Pride got on the board first when Sydney Leroux found the back of the net, beating the keeper and scoring for the eighth time this season to tie for the league lead. Leroux played a role in all three goals scored by the Pride in the match, sending a ball into the box that eventually found the feet of Marta to double the home side’s advantage, and earning the assist on the insurance goal scored by Alex Morgan late in the second half. The match marked Morgan’s return to the pitch for the first time since representing the U.S. at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Saturday also saw the professional debut of midfielder Parker Roberts, who inked a contract with the Pride on Aug. 26 following a successful collegiate career at the University of Florida.

Orlando Pride Interim Head Coach Becky Burleigh:
“A great way to get into a little time off for us. I thought some of the goals were really great efforts. To have Alex [Morgan] score in her return, that’s amazing. Syd[ney Leroux] really, really battled on the goal that she scored. To give Parker [Roberts] her debut and just to have a full team effort again, I think this team continues to show their resilience. We gave up a goal, but didn’t panic and were able to continue to apply the pressure and get a third.”

Scoring Recap:

30’ Sydney Leroux – ORL 1, LOU 0
Orlando got on the board first when Sydney Leroux danced around the 18-yard box before cutting the ball back and striking it with her right foot, beating the goalkeeper.

34’ Marta – ORL 2, LOU 0
Orlando doubled the lead after a Sydney Leroux pass took a deflection off a Louisville player and found Marta in front of the goal. Marta took the left-footed shot, slotting it past the goalkeeper.

51’ Cece Kizer (Yuki Nagasato) – ORL 2, LOU 1
Louisville opened the second half scoring when Yuki Nagasato found Cece Kizer in the box for a quick shot from inside the area.

65’ Alex Morgan (Sydney Leroux) – ORL 3, LOU 1
Orlando netted its third goal off a ball from Sydney Leroux to teammate Alex Morgan, who took the left-footed shot, finding the bottom right corner of the net just minutes into her return to the field.

Match Notes:

  • Sydney Leroux recorded her second assist and scored her eighth goal of the season, tying her for the league lead in finishes in 2021. Leroux was also involved on Marta’s 34th minute finish, crossing in the ball that eventually deflected off a Louisville defender.
  • Alex Morgan scored her fifth goal of the season in what served as her first match for the Pride since June 26 at Houston.
  • Marta’s left-footed strike was her third goal of the season and first since August 22 against the Spirit.
  • Erin McLeod recorded her first start for the Pride since returning from Japan as an Olympic Gold Medalist. The appearance marked the Canadian goalkeeper’s 51st in the NWSL and fourth as a member of the Pride.
  • Orlando Pride scored the Club’s 150th goal across all NWSL competitions with Leroux’s first half strike.
  • Parker Roberts made her professional debut on the night, entering the match in second half stoppage time for Marta.
  • Orlando bagged three goals, the most the team has scored in a match at Exploria Stadium this season.
Next Match: The Pride will enjoy a week off from match play before returning to action on Sunday, Sept. 26 against OL Reign at Cheney Stadium. That game will kickoff at 7 p.m. ET and will stream exclusively on Twitch.

João Paulo scores lone goal for Seattle as Stefan Frei makes his return to the field; Rave Green return to action Tuesday with Leagues Cup semifinal match vs. Santos Laguna at Lumen Field (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN2, TUDN)
SEATTLE, WASH. – João Paulo scored his second goal of the season as Sounders FC (13-4-6, 45 points) defeated Minnesota United FC (8-6-7, 31 points) 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Lumen Field. The win snapped a four-match home winless streak (0-3-1) for Seattle, as the Rave Green remain atop the Western Conference standings, three points clear of Colorado. Goalkeeper Stefan Frei recorded the shutout in his first appearance since suffering a knee injury on May 12 in San Jose.
João Paulo put Seattle on the board early on a well-constructed goal, with assists from Nicolás Lodeiro and Nicolas Benezet. Lodeiro played Benezet into space on the right side of the 18-yard-box, setting up the Frenchman for a low cross to João Paulo at the top of the area. The Brazilian hit a first-time shot that rolled just inside the far post, hitting the woodwork on its way into the back of the net. It marked the first Sounders FC assist for Benezet, as well as the first assist of the season for Lodeiro.
Sounders FC now hosts Mexican side Santos Laguna in the 2021 Leagues Cup semifinals on Tuesday, September 14 at Lumen Field (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN2, TUDN), before traveling to face Real Salt Lake on Saturday, September 18 (6:30 p.m. PT / JOEtv, Prime Video, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).

Recap: Crew suffers road setback in first-ever meeting against Inter Miami CF

0

Columbus Crew dropped a 1-0 decision at Inter Miami CF, who continued their push up the MLS standings in their search for a playoff spot, grabbing a tense win at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Saturday evening.

The win was Miami’s fourth in five outings as they ran their unbeaten streak to five matches while winning their fifth straight at home. They are now two points behind 7th-place D.C. United in the Eastern Conference standings. Columbus has lost back-to-back matches and dropped to 10th place, three spots back of an MLS Cup Playoffs spot.

Miami took the lead just after the 15-minute mark, as Gonzalo Higuain pounced on a poor Columbus giveaway and chipped it past the goal line to make it a 1-0 contest. Both teams had a sight of goal throughout the first half, but the match remained where it was at referee Alan Kelly’s halftime whistle.

They had a glorious chance to put themselves back on level terms with less than 10 minutes remaining but were denied by a lunging Nick Marsman as the Dutchman preserved the clean sheet. Marsman was called upon again in stoppage time but passed yet another test as he stopped a laser of a shot from Luis Diaz.

And the Crew never found the back of the net as Miami saw out their slim lead to make it a third clean sheet in as many games.

It’s a quick turnaround for Columbus, as the Black & Gold return home on Tuesday, September 14 to host the New York Red Bulls at 7:30 p.m. ET.

JAVIER PÉREZ – HEAD COACH, TORONTO FC

Q. What did you see or not see from your team tonight?

Yeah, I see almost two halves, right. I see one-half where the team came out in a 4-4-2 trying to get runs inside the box. Trying to create the opportunities. And instead, we conceded a little bit of space in the middle. I think it was a little bit difficult between [Haris] Medunjanin and [Yuya] Kubo; they were taking over that space.

Then the second half when we changed a little bit the shape, and we regain a little bit more control with the substitutions, but it was a little bit too little, too late. I think we just have three substitutions at that time and they scored the second goal and we didn’t have the opportunity to get back in the game.

But I think at the end, the players, they gave everything they have. And we have another game on Tuesday. We will be tomorrow in the training facility, preparation on Monday, and it’s a quick turnaround for our game against Miami on Tuesday.

Q. I guess you mentioned it there, but were you happy with sort of the compete level and the effort from the boys, because it seemed like at times the team lacked urgency a little bit and just sort of a little bit of resiliency, or am I misreading it?

Yeah, I think you have to look a little bit behind the scenes what happened, right. We’ve been preparing for two weeks for this game. We have Alejandro [Pozuelo] planning to start, and Alejandro, the news comes Thursday night that he has something — he cannot play and he cannot participate in this game and we have to change the plan. Obviously everybody has to be ready but it affects mentally the team, especially in the situation where we are right now. So between that, players coming from international break, I think it’s a little bit difficult to get all the parts ready for the game.

But I think everybody tries to do the job. And we were there for 40, we stayed there for 40 minutes, and then we conceded that goal that put us in a more vulnerable position.

Q. Regarding your lineup selection, were the guys on international duty not ready to go or were you working with the other group moreover this two-week period?

It’s a couple of things. One is we knew that some of the guys, they were coming with — and this is new in the international break, right, three games in a row, 90 minutes pretty much in all three games. Some of the players, some others like Yeferson [Soteldo] traveling almost for 24 hours, to get here he got here last night.

So we need to give a rest to these guys, and then you’ve been working with a group for the past week and a half, two weeks, and these players, they have been working and they deserve a chance to prove that they can play and they can compete.

But once again, as I said, all the time we were preparing, we thought Alejandro in the starting lineup, and this comes as — I think that this mentioned this in the last press conference, when you think things cannot go worse, things can go worse. This is one of the situations that we have the MVP of last season, that he was ready to play this game, and the last day right before traveling, he got this injury that takes him out of the game. So that affects mentally to the team and the whole dynamic.

Q. What is the way out of this mess for this team? Do you have any idea? And why is it, because you’ve got a very veteran group. Why is it that a team with so many veterans has — gives up a goal or has something bad happen, and the body language changes. It gets really bad. It almost looks like the team checks out for at least a portion of the game after that. What answers do you have for what’s going on?

The answer is we have to find them in the game against Miami. That’s the place we are looking for. And I think you are right in a sense, when we concede a goal, the body language, and the body language reflects the frustration of the players.

I think it was the way the season has been — has been developing, and I think we try mentally to overcome these obstacles. I tried to tell them today that we have to put aside the position on the table and kind of reboot and restart again.

As I said, probably this is not — this is probably not the best game to do that because we have special circumstances, but definitely the game against Miami, it has to be — it has to be a game that we need to be — that the team in a different mentality.

Q. You guys just lost to a team that unfortunately was winless in their last 12 games. Looking at the table, you guys are five points out from them in the Eastern Conference; they are second-last. Is this team now with 11 games remaining in the season, can you say that this team is a last-place team now?

Well, I think the table reflects that. I think the table reflects the position where we are. It reflects that we are definitely the last team of the league, and I think at times, it’s not a secret. You can watch the game tonight, and even at the beginning, it was an even game. You could tell that it was a game of two teams at the lowest part of the table. So yes, I think if that’s the question, that’s the answer, yes.

Q. In your experience as a coach — I guess my first question would be: Are you hopeful that positive we will low would be able to play Tuesday? And in your experience as a coach, do you remember going through a season where you had so many injuries to key players, and how frustrating has that been for you?

Yeah, first question, Alejandro, we have to go on a day-to-day basis. The first news that we have was that he would be a little bit longer out, but I know that he wants to be part of the team. He wants to help the team. He wants to come back. So I’m not sure if Miami is going to be the game he’s going to be back but maybe for the weekend.

And the second — the second question is: It’s definitely the most challenging season of my personal career, and I think probably most players in the locker room and the staff can say the same thing. I never encounter so many difficulties and as I said before, when it looks like things cannot go worse, they can go worse.

But the only thing — the only thing you can do is just to stay positive, stay calm. And I’m positive in the group. You see today, I think even if just different things, that we were not sharp or at times it looks like we lack urgency, I would say I know the group in and out because we work together. I think the group is somehow a little bit nervous, as well, because of the situation where we are. But I see in the faces they want to turn this around.

So it’s not just something that the players do voluntarily; that they don’t want to contribute. They don’t want to win. I think it’s just we are in a really, really bad dynamic, but I’m positive that we can turn this around. I think we can turn this around, and it’s only ourselves we can get out of the hole. So we have to overcome all the difficulties and start to put points now that we go back home.

Q. Following up on that, what gives you hope that you can turn this around? Because I mean, bluntly, we have seen scant evidence of any positive from the team the last seven games. So what have you seen that suggests you can turn this around?

Yeah, I think personnel similar to tonight is going to give us more ability to hold the ball. As I mentioned in the past press conference, we were working on being a little bit more direct, a little bit more transition team. But I don’t think that’s who we are, and I think we are more a team that we need to secure a little bit more the ball in order to feel the confidence. So that’s the direction we are going to go.

I think at one point after the New England game, we looked okay at home. We were securing the ball and we had more possession, and that’s more the identity of the team and that’s more my idea for the next game.

Q. We only saw a little cameo of him tonight, Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty, I wanted to get your thoughts on him, and in the past, speaking about Ralph Priso and Noble Okello, you talked about a young player being able to earn the trust and those minutes. What does it take for a player to earn trust and to earn minutes?

It takes what Jahkeele [Marshall-Rutty] did tonight, what Noble did in the past and what Ralph did in the past. I think Jahkeele didn’t have too much time. He came in in a difficult situation in the game but we see — we saw a glimpse of his quality. He has been training really, really well. At one point when we knew that Alejandro was going out, just because of the characteristics of the player, the characteristics of Jahkeele, we thought maybe we could start him because he has been training very well and he has something special.

But it was probably not the right moment to start him because of the circumstances where we are with the team playing away from home as well in a brand new stadium. A lot of conditions to pressure on a young player, but I’m happy that he came on. He added some experience, and that’s experience for him to keep developing.

DOM DWYER – FORWARD, TORONTO FC

Q. Just get your thoughts on how that played out, another tough result for you guys tonight.

Yeah, it was a difficult one. We were in the game for a while. Couldn’t really get a hold or control of the game and we conceded, and then the second one hit us hard and we weren’t able to get ourselves back into the game.

We’re disappointed but we’ve got another one Tuesday, so we regroup, train tomorrow, and get back to work Tuesday at home.

Q. It’s now I think seven or eight games without a win. Where is the team’s head space? Where are you guys at right now?

I would say we’re frustrated, but the group is together, and I think that’s very important. When things don’t go your way, it’s easy to step away from each other. The group is united and together, and right now we know we can only get ourselves out of this.

So we’ll dig deep, we’ll stick together and get back to work on Tuesday. We know we have a tough hill to climb to make it to the playoffs, but we’ll take it one game at a time.

Q. How is it for such a veteran team that the moment something bad happens, you concede a goal or something goes wrong, and the team seems to wilt and fade, why can’t you fight through it right now, a veteran group being so fragile?

I would say it’s better to be lucky than good, and I think luck isn’t on our side right now. Sometimes when it rains, it pours and right now that seems to be the case for us. Of course we need to put the responsibility on ourselves and veteran players like myself and other guys, we need to take responsibility to keep the group together and get back to work on Tuesday. I think as a group we’ve discussed how important it is to have a positive reaction and regardless of if we score the first goal or concede the first goal, stay into the game. So I think obviously this season took a while for us to get going. It’s not too late but we have work to do.

Q. You’ve played a lot of football in your life. Curious if you’ve of experienced a period like this where a team of such talented players just can’t team to pull it all together, and what are some of those experiences that you look to at times like this?

Yeah, you know, I’ve been in this difficult position before. I’ve been with teams that have breezed into the playoffs and I’ve been with teams that have not made it into the playoffs.

I would say this is a very, very talented group. We look around the locker room at each other and we see how much quality we have. We’re frustrated, as well, and it’s up to us to get things together and get us back on the right path. So you know, myself and the rest of the group will do everything we can to do that.

Q. You said you’ve been on teams that have been through struggles before, but have you been on teams that have not reacted as positively as this team? Have you been on teams that let the losses not overwhelm them as compared to this side?

Yeah, I mean, this team’s still together, like I said. It’s easy to — I mean, there’s a lot of team camaraderie still which is not always the case when results are not going your way. You know, I would say again that we are working hard and we’re grinding and we are grafting, and we still have a chance to turn this around and we’ll keep working for that.

Quakes now unbeaten in seven straight road matches

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 1-1 draw against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night. The draw extends San Jose’s unbeaten streak on the road to seven matches, tied for the longest such run in club history (2003).

San Jose opened the scoring in the sixth minute when FC Dallas’ Matt Hedges was called for a handball in the box and Oswaldo Alanis converted the ensuing penalty kick.

San Jose retained the lead into halftime, but FC Dallas scored the equalizer just five minutes into the second half. Defender Justin Che sent a cross from the right wing to Ricardo Pepi, who headed the ball just out of reach of JT Marcinkowski outstretched arms.

The Quakes had a couple near chances, including a Chris Wondolowski header that caromed off the crossbar, but couldn’t find the winner.

Marcinkowski made several crucial saves during the match to help secure a point, finishing with six saves total. His six saves are tied for the second most he’s tallied in a single match during his MLS career.

The Earthquakes will now return to San Jose to host Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, Sept. 15, presented by Donor Network West. The match kicks off from PayPal Park at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California Plus, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH MATIAS ALMEYDA

On his talk with the team at halftime:

“In the first half, even though we got the lead, I think the opponent was doing better than us. We were far from our marks and far from the second ball and had little control of the match. I think that has a lot to do with the opponent because they performed well. In the second half, it was totally different, we tightened up our marks and changed the way we pressured. We started to have more control of the match in which we were building up our play out wide. In the second half, we went back to playing in the way we had been playing.”

On scoring first and playing the remainder of the match to win:

“I think the players are giving their max, which is earning points, even if it’s an early point on the road. We had important players sit out on tonight’s match. In every match, things happen that I don’t like. I also think there are virtues in the opponent. In my humble perspective of football, I think we faced the best forward in the league today and he is unforgiving. Other than that, the match was even, each team had a better half. Our work and effort have become this, and that is the reality.”

On JT Marcinkowski’s improvement:

“These are the processes we try to have with the young guys. We’d like to mix these younger players with more experienced players and players that make a difference. I look at how JT has improved, I look at how Tanner Beason has improved, and I look at how Jackson [Yueill] has improved. I see how Cade Cowell and Paul Marie keep improving. Today, Jack Skahan and Benji Kikanovic entered the match and they will keep growing. As a coaching staff, we want to compete for titles and the reality is showing us something else. The development aspect is part of our jobs. We give confidence to the young players because we understand that they will keep growing and are the future of the club. This week, I was able to call up a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old to train with us. We will try to give them the tools that we believe are necessary.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES GOALKEEPER JT MARCINKOWSKI

On the match:

“I think in the first half, we didn’t execute exactly how we wanted to. I think we sat back a little bit too much and they had the majority of the ball. We came out in the second half, and obviously the first five minutes we were a bit flat, but after that and the goal – it wasn’t a good one to give up – but I thought we played really well in the second half. We had plenty of chances, crossbar, another one off another corner. It’s an away game, Dallas is a really good team, they have a lot of young guys who have really bright futures. So, all-in-all I think it was an okay point but it’s one of those games where you have a bitter taste in your mouth because I think there were three points for the taking. But we can’t dwell on it too much and all eyes on Wednesday.”

On the team’s confidence in road matches:

“I think just knowing we can impose ourselves in any game. We want to play better at home and that’s one area we really need to improve on and we’re going to show it Wednesday. That same confidence we have when we play on the road, we need to have it at home and make PayPal Park our fortress as a really tough place to play and make sure teams don’t want to go there. I think our ability to unite as a group. It’s a really close group inside that locker room and we’re all really good friends and it’s a really cool environment so when we come on the road and we know that there’s a lot of fans against us, the whole crowd’s against us, it’s kind of us against them and we love that mentality. We kind of thrive off it.”

RECAP: Houston Dynamo FC defeat Austin FC 3-0

NEED TO KNOW:

·       FW Griffin Dorsey scored third-fastest goal in Club history

·       FW Fafà Picault scored two goals for the 4th time in his MLS career

·       GK Michael Nelson earned his first career clean sheet

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC defeated Austin FC by a final score of 3-0 this evening at BBVA Stadium. The win marks the largest margin of victory for Houston on the season and ends the team’s 16-game winless streak.

Forward Fafà Picault bagged a brace while goalkeeper Michael Nelson notched his first career clean sheet with assistance from the Dynamo back line. Houston held Austin to just two shots on goal, both of which Nelson saved, while defenders blocked seven shots before they ever got to the target.

The Dynamo did not waste time starting the scoring. The first goal of the game came in just the first minute of the game, when forward Griffin Dorsey blasted the ball into the back of the net after a shot from midfielder Darwin Quintero was blocked. The goal, which came just 48 seconds into the match, was the third-fastest in Dynamo history. It was also the first of Dorsey’s MLS career.

The Dynamo doubled their lead in the 24th minute thanks to the hustle of Picault. The forward ran on to a long ball from defender Teenage Hadebe and picked the pocket of an Austin defender before curling the ball around Austin’s goalkeeper. The assist is the first for Hadebe since joining the MLS.

Picault struck once again in the 64th in a wild sequence that started when Nelson saved an Austin shot and the rebound ricocheted off the post. A long clearance found its way to Picault sprinting down the left side of the pitch on a solo counter attack, before he worked his way in front of goal and knocked the ball into the net.

Picault’s two goals gave him eight on the year, six of which have come in the last eight matches. This marks the fourth time Picault has recorded an MLS brace and the first since Oct. 31, 2020 against FC Dallas.

With the win, the Dynamo evened the season series with their in-state rival and overtook them in the standings. The two teams will face off once again in Austin on Oct. 24.

Prior to the match, the Dynamo took part in a league wide remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which took place on this date 20 years ago. In addition to wearing a commemorative patch, the ceremony included a moment of silence followed by the singing of the national anthem by a Houston-area FBI agent of more than 30 years.

This game marked the coming together of two of the four Texas-based professional soccer teams participating in the Texas Unites fundraiser for Hurricane Ida relief efforts. To donate to the relief efforts, go to https://justgiving.com/campaign/texasunites.

The Dynamo will travel to Los Angeles to take on the LA Galaxy for their next contest. Kickoff for that match is set for 9:30 p.m. CDT and fans can tune in at Quest Texas 55 and MLS Live on ESPN+.
