Washington Nationals announce roster moves

The Washington Nationals announced the following roster moves Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements:

 

Recalled right-handed pitcher Ryne Harper from Triple-A Rochester

Selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Kyle Lobstein from Triple-A Rochester

Placed right-handed pitcher Tanner Rainey (retroactive to June 28) on the 10-day Injured List with a stress reaction in his right tibia

Designated right-handed pitcher Justin Miller for assignment

Harper, 32, returns for his fifth stint with the Nationals this season. He’s appeared in six games across those five stints, pitching to a 1.13 ERA (1 ER/8.0 IP) with five strikeouts and two walks. Harper went 1-1 with a 3.66 ERA in 13 games with Triple-A Rochester this season.

 

Lobstein, 31, went 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA (4 ER/21.1 IP) and 25 strikeouts in 16 relief appearances for Triple-A Rochester. He allowed just one extra-base hit (double) while holding batters to a .203 batting average. Left-handed batters went 5-for-29 (.172) with 11 strikeouts and zero extra-base hits against him this season.

 

Lobstein returns to the Major Leagues for the first time since 2016 when he appeared in 26 games out of Pittsburgh’s bullpen. A veteran of three Major League seasons, he is 6-10 with a 5.06 ERA in 34 career games (17 starts) with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2016) and Detroit Tigers (2014-15). He was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the second round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Coconino (AZ) High School.

 

Rainey, 28, is 1-2 with one save and a 6.93 ERA in 30 games out of Washington’s bullpen.

 

Miller, 34, posted a 15.00 ERA in five games out of Washington’s bullpen.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that pitcher Gregory Santos, a 40-man roster player of the San Francisco Giants who is currently on the roster of Triple-A Sacramento, has received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Seattle’s Santiago disciplined

Seattle Mariners pitcher Héctor Santiago has received a 10-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for possessing a foreign substance on his glove at the end of the fifth inning of his Club’s Sunday, June 27th game against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. Michael Hill, Major League Baseball’s Senior Vice President for On-Field Operations, made the announcement.

 

The suspension of Santiago had been scheduled to begin tonight, when the Mariners are scheduled to play the Toronto Blue Jays at Sahlen Field in Buffalo. However, Santiago has elected to appeal. Thus, the discipline will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

White Sox make four roster moves

CHICAGO – Prior to tonight’s game vs. Minnesota, the Chicago White Sox made the following four roster moves:

 

  • Placed OF Jake Lamb on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 28) with a strained right quadriceps;

 

  • Optioned OF Luis González to Class AAA Charlotte;

 

  • Recalled 1B Gavin Sheets from Charlotte;

 

  • Reinstated OF Billy Hamilton from the 10-day injured list.

 

Sheets, 25, is batting .292/.352/.472 (47-161) with eight doubles, seven home runs, 33 RBI and 23 runs scored over 41 games with the Knights this season. Sheets, 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, has played in 26 games at first base, 15 in right field and two in left.

 

Sheets, who bats and throws left-handed, was with the White Sox from June 3-4 but did not appear in a game. He is a career .281/.357/.416 (356-1,266) hitter with 33 home runs, 205 RBI and 156 runs scored in 342 games over four minor-league seasons after being selected by the Sox in the second round of the 2017 draft out of Wake Forest.

 

Sheets, the son of former major leaguer Larry Sheets, has no MLB experience. He will wear uniform No. 32.

 

Hamilton, 30, was placed on the injured list on June 6 with a strained right oblique. He is batting .217/.246/.406 (15-69) with three doubles, two triples, two home runs, 10 RBI, 13 runs scored and five stolen bases this season, his first with the White Sox.

 

Lamb, 30, is batting .224/.333/.424 (19-85) with five home runs, 10 RBI and 16 runs scored over 31 games this season, also his first with the Sox.

 

González, 25, went 2-8 with two doubles, three walks and two runs scored in six games with the Sox after being recalled from Charlotte on June 22. He collected his first major-league hit on June 23 at Pittsburgh.

Miami Marlins acquire INF Joe Panik and RHP Andrew McInvale from Toronto Blue Jays

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired INF Joe Panik and RHP Andrew McInvale from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for OF Corey Dickerson, RHP Adam Cimber and cash considerations.

 

Panik, 30, has appeared in 42 games for the Blue Jays in 2021, batting .246 with two home runs and 11 RBI, while appearing in 21 games at third base and 10 games at second base. A World Series Champion in 2014 with San Francisco, National League All-Star in 2015 and Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner at second base in 2016, Panik has played in eight Major League seasons with the Giants, New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays. He is a career .268 hitter in 765 Major League games, appearing in 672 games at second, 33 games at third, 14 games at shortstop and four games at first in his career. Panik was a first round selection (29th overall) by the San Francisco Giants out of St. John’s University in 2011.

 

McInvale, 24, has made 15 combined relief appearances this season between Single-A Vancouver and Double-A New Hampshire, going 2-2 with a 3.65 ERA. Over 13 outings with the Double-A Fisher Cats, he has struck out 28 batters in 20.2 innings, recording a 2.18 ERA. A 37th round selection by the Blue Jays in the 2019 Draft out of Liberty University, McInvale owns a 3-2 career record with a 4.10 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 41.2 innings over two years.

Blue Jays acquire Cimber and Dickerson

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired RHP Adam Cimber, OF Corey Dickerson, and cash considerations from the Miami Marlins in exchange for INF Joe Panik and RHP Andrew McInvale.

 

Dickerson will be placed on the 10-day injured list (left foot contusion). To make room on the on the 40-man roster, LHP Travis Bergen has been designated for assignment.

 

Cimber, 30, has kept a 2.88 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP across 33 relief appearances for the Marlins this season. The 6-3, 195 lb. right-hander pitched for Cleveland in 2020, going 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA. The Portland, OR, native is in his fourth Major League season and holds a 3.69 ERA and a .259 opponents’ batting average across 185 appearances.

 

Dickerson, 32, slashed .260/.321/.377 with 12 doubles, three triples, two home runs, and 14 RBI before landing on the injured list on June 15 with a left foot contusion. The left-handed hitting product of Meridian Community College (MS) was named an All-Star while with the Rays in 2017 and claimed a Gold Glove Award while roaming the outfield for the Pirates in 2018. Over the course of his nine Major League campaigns, Dickerson has hit .282 with 207 doubles, 33 triples, 124 home runs, and 401 RBI while playing for the Rockies, Rays, Pirates, Phillies, and Marlins.

 

Panik, 30, has batted .246 with six doubles and a pair of home runs in 42 games for Toronto this season. The Yonkers, NY, native joined the Blue Jays prior to the 2020 season and hit .235 over 83 contests while spending time at first, second, third, and shortstop. The 2014 World Series champion and 2015 All-Star owns a .268 average with 133 doubles, 19 triples, and 41 home runs over eight Major League seasons.

 

McInvale, 24, was selected by Toronto in the 37th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft and played in seven Rookie-level games that season, going 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA. The native of Austin, TX, has pitched in 15 games this year with Advanced-A Vancouver and Double-A New Hampshire, combining for a 2.55 ERA and .169 opponents’ average.

Nikita Kucherov had 2-1—3 to lift the Lightning past the Canadiens in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final and reach the 30-point mark for the second time in as many postseasons.

* Brayden Point also posted three points for Tampa Bay, which opened the Final with a victory for the first time in franchise history.

* The NHL made several announcements before Game 1, including a new investment for diversity and inclusion programs as well as information for the 2021-22 outdoor games and 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend.

KUCHEROV, POINT POWER LIGHTNING TO 1-0 SERIES LEAD IN STANLEY CUP FINAL
Nikita Kucherov (2-1—3) and Brayden Point (0-3—3) had three points apiece as Tampa Bay opened the Stanley Cup Final with a win against Montreal at AMALIE Arena. The Lightning have scored at least four goals in seven of 10 home games this postseason (4.2 G/GP).

* Kucherov (7-23—30 in 19 GP) leads the League with 30 points in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, four back of his total from the 2020 postseason (7-27—34 in 25 GP). He became the fourth player in NHL history with 30 or more points in multiple playoff years, joining Wayne Gretzky (6x), Mark Messier (3x), Jari Kurri (2x) and Mario Lemieux (2x).
* Kucherov picked up his 50th postseason assist since the start of 2020 to join Gretzky (60 from 1987-1988 and 52 from 1984-1985) as the second player in NHL history to record as many over two straight playoff years. Kucherov also trails only Gretzky (five instances) and Lemieux for the most combined points over two consecutive postseasons.

 

 

* Point became the first player in Lightning history with three assists in a Stanley Cup Final game; the last player on any team to do so was Torey Krug in Game 3 of the 2019 Final (w/ BOS).

* Kucherov (3-8—11) and Point (5-6—11) have found the score sheet in each of their last six contests during the Stanley Cup Final dating to Game 2 in 2020. They matched Evgeni Malkin (2008-2009) and Ryan O’Reilly (2019) for the longest such runs among active players (spanning seasons or otherwise). The last player to extend his Stanley Cup Final point streak to at least seven games was Sergei Fedorov.

LEAGUE EVENTS FOR 2021-22 SEASON ALSO ANNOUNCED

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also made announcements pertaining to the 2021-22 NHL season during his annual pre-Stanley Cup Final media availability:
* The 2022 NHL Winter Classic will feature the Blues and Wild at the home of the MLB’s Minnesota Twins, Target Field, in Minneapolis, Minn., on Jan. 1, 2022.

* The 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend will take place in Las Vegas, Nev., at the home of the Golden Knights, T-Mobile Arena, and will be scheduled during its traditional midway point of the regular season.

* The 2022 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series will visit the home of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, Nissan Stadium, in Nashville, Tenn., where the Predators will host the Lightning on Feb. 26, 2022.

* The League also plans to host a Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic in March.
