Philadelphia Union Sign Goalkeeper Andre Blake To Contract Extension

0

2020 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year comes to agreement with club for three-year guarantee

CHESTER, Pa. – Philadelphia Union announced today that the club has signed goalkeeper Andre Blake to a new, multi-year contract extension. Following another standout season in 2020, where Blake earned MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and led the Union to their first ever Supporters’ Shield, the deal ensures that Blake is under contract with the Union through 2024, with a club option for 2025.

“Andre was the backbone of the best defense in MLS last season and has been a key piece of our club’s success the past few seasons. His high level of play has allowed us to give young defenders such as Mark McKenzie, Kai Wagner, and Olivier Mbaizo opportunities to prove themselves at the MLS level,” said Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner. “As the rest of the league recognized last year, we have the best keeper in North America, and he is continuously getting better. While his play speaks for itself on the field, his mentality and the leadership role he has taken in our young squad has been as equally important. We are thrilled that he will remain with our club for years to come.”

Blake, 30, signed with the Union in 2014 when he was selected by Philadelphia first overall in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, the first goalkeeper ever to be taken first overall in the history of the event. In 2020, with Blake leading from the back, the Union made history as they became the only team in MLS history to win every home match in a single season (9-0-0). They also ended the season with the fewest goals allowed in MLS, as well the fewest goals allowed in a single season in Union history, that culminated in the club’s first Supporters’ Shield victory.

Blake holds the Union all-time records in games played, games started, minutes played, saves and clean sheets, as well as setting the single-season saves record (118 saves, 2018) and single-season wins (14 wins, 2018). He has twice been named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year (2016, 2020) and was named a finalist in 2017 . Additionally, he was named to the MLS All-Star squad two times (2016, 2019), becoming the first two-time All Star in Union history, and has been twice nominated for an ESPY award for best Major League Soccer player (2017, 2021).

Internationally, Blake, who regularly features as Jamaica’s number one goalkeeper and captain, has earned 46 caps for the Reggae Boyz. He is currently playing in his fourth Gold Cup, having been on the squad for the tournament in 2015, 2017 and 2019. In 2017, he captained his team to the final where he kept three clean sheets and only allowed four goals in six games, earning him the Golden Gloves award and a best XI nomination.

Prior to being drafted by the Union, Blake played collegiately for three years at the University of Connecticut. During his time there, he earned Conference Goalkeeper of the Year awards each season.  He also earned All-Big East first team, NSCAA First Team All-American, Soccer America MVP First Team and Soccer America All-Freshman First Team, as well as becoming a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy his junior year.

Atlanta gets former All-Star from Chicago

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves tonight acquired OF Joc Pederson from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for 1B Bryce Ball.

Pederson, 29, batted .230 (59-for-256) with 11 home runs and a .718 OPS in 73 games for the Cubs this season. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound native of Palo Alto, Calif., signed a one-year contract with the Cubs in the offseason after winning a World Series title with Los Angeles in 2020.

Pederson, who bats and throws left-handed, began the season 7-for-51 (.137) with two extra-base hits before landing on the 10-day injured list with left wrist tendinitis. After returning from the IL on May 3, Pederson hit .254 (52-for-205) with 10 home runs and a .773 OPS.

Originally drafted by Los Angeles (NL) in the 11th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, Pederson made his major league debut with the Dodgers in 2014. He made the All-Star team in 2015 and finished sixth in the Rookie of the Year voting that season. Over seven years with the Dodgers, Pederson hit 130 home runs, including a career-best 36 in 2019.

For his career, Pederson owns a .838 OPS in 2,005 at-bats against right-handed pitching. He has 132 of his 141 career home runs against righties.

Pederson has made starts at all three outfield positions this season, with the bulk of his appearances coming in left field (66 games, 63 starts). The majority of his career starts, however, have come in center field (414 games, 351 starts).

Pederson batted .382 (13-for-34) with two home runs and a .991 OPS in 16 games during the Dodgers’ World Series title run last season.

Lions to travel to Canada for first time since the COVID-19 pandemic

ORLANDO, Fla. – Major League Soccer announced today that select home matches for Toronto FC and CF Montréal will be hosted at their respective home stadiums in Canada, including the Lions’ matchup against the Reds on Saturday, July 17.

Kickoff for Saturday’s match is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage to begin on FOX35 PLUS at 7 p.m. ET. In addition to being broadcast on FOX35 PLUS, the fixture will be available to stream on LionNation TV and transmitted on 96.9 The Game in English and Acción 97.9FM, 810AM in Spanish.

The two sides last faced off on June 19, in what served as an away match for City despite the fixture taking place at Exploria Stadium. The Lions took all three points from that contest in a 3-2 victory following an 84th minute game-winner from Júnior Urso.

MLS made the determination based on updated cross-border public health legislation enacted on July 5 by the Canadian government and in consideration of the substantial time players and staff have spent away from their home markets. MLS remains in communication with the Canadian government regarding plans for MLS Canadian teams to host their remaining home matches in Canada.

MLS clubs and match officials traveling to Canada will be subject to public health protocols required of all individuals entering the country, and only fully vaccinated players and staff are excluded from Canadian quarantine requirements.  These protocols include, but are not limited to, molecular COVID-19 testing prior to travel and upon arrival in Canada.

Toronto and Montreal will be permitted to have fans and media in attendance at matches, in accordance with all local and regional guidelines.

Toronto FC returns to BMO Field Saturday night against Orlando City SC for first match at home since September 2020

0

With recently announced public health protocols and updated Major League Soccer regulations, Toronto FC will return to play at BMO Field on Saturday, July 17 when they host Orlando City SC. The club will also welcome 7,000 fans that night for the first match this season at BMO Field, made up of frontline healthcare workers, first responders and season seat members.

The match on Saturday will mark Toronto FC’s first match at BMO Field since September 1, 2020 when they faced Montreal and its first match at BMO Field in front of fans since the club’s 2020 home opener on March 7, 2020 against New York City FC.

“The importance of this return home for our team can’t be overstated,” said Bill Manning, President of Toronto FC. “It has been a long, hard time on the road due to pandemic protocols and we have greatly missed the energy and support of our fans at BMO Field. Our return to Canada gave the team an incredible boost this week and we look forward to an emotional night at BMO Field with our fans on Saturday.”

Toronto FC will host 7,000 fans for the first match on Saturday and increase capacity on Wednesday, July 21 to the 15,000 fans now permitted with the province’s move to Step 3 of its reopening plan.

“We know that our return home is the result of the hard work of many government and public health officials, as well as the efforts by everyone to follow health and safety protocols and protect our community and we are grateful to everyone for their support,” said Manning.

As the club hosts and pays tribute to frontline healthcare workers, first responders and season seat members on Saturday, a number of Toronto FC partners will be providing gifts to all fans to mark the occasion including BMO providing Toronto FC scarves to fans. Pizza Pizza will also provide a free slice of pizza to all fans, Maple Leaf Foods and Weston Foods will provide hot dogs and buns, with Mars/Wrigley providing snacks and Coca-Cola providing soft drinks and water.

As BMO Field’s Official Disinfection partner, SC Johnson will supply the venue with disinfectant and cleaning products to be used throughout the stadium. They will also donate individual hand sanitizers to all fans.

TFC returned to Canada on July 8, after starting the season at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, where the team played four home matches.

Toronto FC and MLS remain in communication with the Canadian government regarding plans for MLS Canadian teams to host their remaining home matches after July 21 in Canada.

As part of venue health and safety protocols to minimize contact points and reduce lines, all tickets for Toronto FC games will continue to be exclusively mobile and BMO Field will operate as a ‘cashless’ venue.

All of Toronto FC’s regular-season MLS matches will be televised across Canada on TSN.
