Miami Marlins Acquire C Payton Henry From Milwaukee Brewers

The Miami Marlins today acquired C Payton Henry from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for RHP John Curtiss.

 

Henry, 24, has played in 49 games this season between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Nashville, combining to hit .297 with two home runs and 19 RBI. He spent most of the 2020 season at Milwaukee’s Alternate Training Site. A native of American Fork, Utah, Henry is the Brewers No. 19 prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

 

In five Minor League seasons, Henry is a .248 career hitter with 33 home runs and 185 RBI. He was the 2018 MiLB Gold Glove Award winner in 2018 and a Midseason All-Star in the Midwest League in 2018 and Carolina League in 2019. He ranked third in RBI (75) and tied for fourth in home runs (14) in 2019 with Carolina.

 

Henry was selected in the sixth round (171 overall) of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft from Pleasant Grove High School (UT).

Mets acquire All-Star infielder Javier Báez and RHP Trevor Williams from Chicago

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets today announced the club has acquired two-time All-Star infielder Javier Báez, RHP Trevor Williams and cash considerations from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.

 

Báez, 28, has spent his entire eight-year major league career with the Cubs. This season with Chicago-NL, he is tied for sixth in the National League with 65 RBI and tied for seventh with 22 home runs. He has a 2.8 WAR according to Baseball-Reference.

 

Since 2016, his first full major league season, he has accumulated 9.6 defensive WAR, tied for fourth in the majors and tied for second in the NL. Báez is a four-time winner of The Fielding Bible Award for defensive excellence. He won the award three times as a multi-position player and was honored as a shortstop last year.

 

The 6-0, 190-pounder was named an NL All-Star in 2018 and 2019, won a Gold Glove in 2020 and was an NL Silver Slugger recipient in 2018, when he finished as the runner-up for the NL MVP Award. The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native won the 2016 World Series with Chicago-NL. That October, he was named the NLCS Co-MVP with LHP Jon Lester.

 

Báez became the first player in major league history to start the All-Star Game at second base and shortstop in consecutive seasons.

 

Williams, 29, has made 13 appearances (12 starts) for the Cubs this season, going 4-2 with a 5.06 ERA (33 earned runs/58.2 innings) with 22 walks and 61 strikeouts.

 

He has appeared in 119 games (106 starts) across six major league seasons between the Pirates (2016-2020) and Cubs (2021). Overall, he is 35-39 with a 4.49 ERA (296 earned runs/593.1 innings) with 199 walks and 477 strikeouts. He was originally selected by the Marlins in the second round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University.

 

Williams has made two starts at Citi Field and owns a 1.93 ERA (three earned runs/14.0 innings) with four walks and 10 strikeouts.

 

Crow-Armstrong, 19, was the Mets first-round pick in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft out of Harvard-Westlake High School in California. He appeared in six games with the St. Lucie Mets before he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. He underwent surgery on his right shoulder for a GLAD lesion (glenoid labral articular disruption) in May.

Phillies acquire Kyle Gibson, Ian Kennedy and Hans Crouse from Rangers

The Phillies have acquired right-handed pitchers Kyle Gibson, Ian Kennedy and Hans Crouse along with cash considerations from the Texas Rangers in exchange for right-handed pitchers Spencer Howard, Kevin Gowdy and Josh Gessner, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

 

Gibson, 33, is 6-3 with a 2.87 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 94 strikeouts and just nine home runs allowed in 113.0 innings over 19 starts. A first-time All-Star in 2021, he has held opponents to a .224/.300/.326 slash line this season and 13 of his 19 starts have been quality starts. From April 7 (his second start of the season) through July 2 (his 16th start), Gibson went 6-0 with a 1.51 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. He pitched at least 5.0 innings and allowed three runs or fewer in each of those 15 starts and went at least 6.0 innings with two runs or fewer in 11 of them.

 

Gibson ranks third among all qualifying American League pitchers in ERA this season, behind only Chicago’s Lance Lynn (1.91) and Carlos Rodon (2.49). He is second in the AL in fewest home runs allowed per nine innings pitched (0.72), tied for third in the AL in quality starts and fourth in opponents’ OPS (.626). The 6-foot-6, 215-pounder also ranks third in the AL and seventh in baseball in ground ball rate (50.8%) and his home run to fly ball rate (9.9%) is the fifth-lowest among AL pitchers.

 

A veteran of nine major league seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2013-19) and Rangers (2020-21), Gibson made 29 or more starts in five of six seasons from 2014 (his first full season) to 2019, and his 12 starts during the shortened 2020 season were tied for second-most in the AL. Since 2014, he leads all AL pitchers in innings pitched (1,216.1) and starts (209) and is fourth in baseball in starts behind only Max Scherzer (222), Zack Greinke (221) and Jon Lester (219). Gibson, an Indiana native, was selected by the Twins in the first round (No. 22 overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft. He was originally selected by the Phillies in the 36th round of the 2006 MLB Draft, but did not sign.

 

The 36-year-old Kennedy has a 2.51 ERA, 16 saves in 17 chances, a 1.05 WHIP and 35 strikeouts to seven walks in 32.1 innings over 32 relief appearances this season. Opponents are batting .227 with a .656 OPS against him. In his 17 save opportunities, Kennedy has allowed only two extra-base hits, four walks and 17 baserunners overall, posting a 0.98 WHIP. His 94.1% save percentage is the fourth-best among all qualifying pitchers, and is second to only Houston’s Ryan Pressly (94.7%) in the AL. Overall, his 16 saves are tied for sixth in the AL.

 

Kennedy made 289 starts and two relief appearances from 2007-18 with the New York Yankees (2007-09), Arizona Diamondbacks (2010-13), San Diego Padres (2013-15) and Kansas City Royals (2016-18), posting a 4.12 ERA before transitioning to a relief role. Since 2019, in 109 relief appearances and one start with Kansas City (2019-20) and Texas (2021), he has a 3.86 ERA and has converted 46 of 51 save opportunities (90.2%), the second-highest save rate in baseball among qualifying relievers.

 

Crouse, the Rangers’ No. 9 prospect per MLB Pipeline, went 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and 54 strikeouts to 19 walks in 51.0 innings in 13 starts for double-A Frisco this season. He allowed only 27 hits, holding opponents to a .157 AVG, the third-lowest among all double-A pitchers with as many or more starts. The 22-year-old is 14-6 with a 3.29 ERA and 222 strikeouts in 213.1 innings in 55 games (51 starts) across four minor league seasons. He was a second-round selection by Texas in the 2017 MLB Draft.

 

Howard, 25, posted a 5.72 ERA in 11 games (7 starts) with the Phillies in 2021, and is 1-4 with a 5.81 ERA, 27 walks and 54 strikeouts in 52.2 innings in 17 career games (13 starts) after debuting with the club in 2020. The California native was selected by the Phillies in the second round of the June 2017 MLB Draft.

 

Gowdy had a 4.43 ERA in 14 games (12 starts) with single-A Jersey Shore this season. The 23-year-old, a second-round selection by Philadelphia in the 2016 MLB Draft, is 4-12 with a 4.53 ERA in 42 games (32 starts) over three minor league seasons. He was injured and did not pitch from 2017-18.

 

Gessner, a 21-year-old Australia native, had a 1.17 ERA in three games (2 starts) in the rookie-level Florida Complex League. In nine games (5 starts) in the Phillies’ system, he posted a 2.21 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 20.1 innings. Gessner previously pitched briefly for Sydney in the Australian Baseball League in 2017 before being signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent in June 2019.

Padres acquire OF Jake Marisnick from Cubs

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have acquired outfielder Jake Marisnick from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Anderson Espinoza, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

 

In 65 games this season, Marisnick is batting .227 (29-for-128) with six doubles, three triples, five home runs, 22 RBI, three stolen bases and 17 runs scored. He is hitting .295 (18-for-61) with a .348 OBP, .525 SLG % and .872 OPS against left-handed pitchers, as opposed to a .164/.243/.358 line against righties. Marisnick has also posted a .308 average (8-for-26) with 16 RBI with runners in scoring position. He has appeared in 49 games in centerfield with a .973 fielding percentage (2 E, 73 TC).

 

Originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 3rd round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Riverside Poly High School (Ca.), Marisnick has a .229 career batting average (424-for-1852) with 86 doubles, 13 triples, 61 home runs, 205 RBI, 76 stolen bases and 264 runs scored in 766 career games between the Miami Marlins (2013-14), Houston Astros (2014-19), New York Mets (2020) and Cubs (2021). A member of the 2017 World Series Champion Astros, Marisnick has posted a .333 average (7-for-21) in 23 career postseason games. He has appeared in games at all three outfield positions in his career (51 G in LF, 488 in CF, 53 in RF) with a .990 fielding percentage (13 E, 1307 TC).

Minnesota Wild Signs Defenseman Kevin Czuczman to a One-Year, Two-Way Contract

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Wild General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed defenseman Kevin Czuczman (CHUHRCH-man) to a one-year, two-way contract ($750,000/$200,000).

 

Czuczman, 30 (1/9/91), spent majority of the 2020-21 season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) and recorded four assists and 45 shots in 28 games. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound native of London, Ontario, ranked second amongst team defensemen in shots, tallied his 100th career AHL assist on May 5 vs. Binghamton and skated in his 400th career AHL game on May 9 at Lehigh Valley. He played in two games with Pittsburgh last season, his first NHL contests since April 13, 2014. The left-shot blueliner owns 124 points (24-100=24), eight power-play goals (PPG), three game-winning goals (GWG), 327 penalty minutes (PIM) and 741 shots on goal in 402 career AHL games with Bridgeport (2014-16), Manitoba (2016-17) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (2017-21). He has appeared in five Calder Cup Playoff games with Bridgeport (2016) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (2018).

 

Czuczman was originally signed as a free agent by the New York Islanders on March 11, 2014. He made his NHL debut on March 18, 2014 vs. Minnesota and tallied his first NHL point with an assist on March 25, 2014 at Carolina. The defenseman owns two assists in 15 career NHL games in parts of two seasons with the Islanders (2013-14) and the Penguins (2020-21).

 

Prior to signing with New York, Czuczman skated in three seasons with Lake Superior State University of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) and registered 45 points (14-31=45) and 141 PIM goal in 114 games (2011-14). He was named to the WCHA Second All-Star Team in 2014, named Lake Superior’s Most Valuable Defenseman in 2013 and the team’s Outstanding Freshman in 2012.

Minnesota Wild Agrees to Terms With Defenseman Jon Merrill

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Wild General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has agreed to terms with defenseman Jon Merrill on a one-year, $850,000 contract.

 

Merrill, 29 (2/3/92), recorded five assists and 70 blocked shots in 49 games with the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens last season. He was acquired by Montreal from Detroit on April 11, 2021, in exchange for Hayden Verbeek and a fifth round pick (Jack Bar) in the 2021 NHL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound native of Oklahoma City, Okla., notched 11 hits and 23 blocked shots in 13 Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Canadiens.

 

He owns 66 points (12-54=66), 211 penalty minutes (PIM), 364 hits and 507 blocked shots in 405 career NHL games during eight seasons with New Jersey, Vegas, Detroit and Montreal (2013-21). Merrill has appeared in 29 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Golden Knights and Canadiens. The left-shot defenseman made his NHL debut at Minnesota on Nov. 3, 2013, and scored his first NHL goal on Feb. 7, 2014, the game-winning tally in a 2-1 overtime win vs. Edmonton.

 

He tallied 47 points (11-36=47) and 45 PIM in 82 games during three seasons at the University of Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (2010-13). Merrill was named to the 2011 CCHA All-Rookie Team and the 2011 CCHA Second All-Star Team as the Wolverines won the CCHA championship. He represented the United States at the 2011 (bronze) and 2012 IIHF World Junior Championships and won back-to-back gold medals at the 2009 and 2010 IIHF World Under-18 Championships. Merrill also played two seasons at the U.S. National Team Development Program (2008-10) and totaled 41 points (8-33=41) in 101 contests.

 

He was originally selected by the Devils in the second round (38th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft.

Minnesota Wild Agrees to Terms with Forward Brandon Duhaime

SAINT PAUL, Minn. Minnesota Wild General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has agreed to terms with forward Brandon Duhaime on a two-year contract (two-way in 2021-22 for $750,000/$100,000 and one-way in 2022-23 for $750,000).

 

Duhaime, 24 (5/22/97), registered nine points (6-3=9) in 24 games with the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2020-21. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound native of Parkland, Fla., led the Wild with three game-winning goals (GWG) and ranked T-7th in goals. The left-shot forward recorded a career-high three-game goal streak from April 16-23, including back-to-back contests with the GWG (April 17-23). He tallied a career-high three points (2-1=3) on May 14 vs. Texas, also his first career multi-goal game. The winger owns 29 points (12-17=29), a plus-11 rating, 103 penalty minutes (PIM), three GWG and 157 shots on goal in 87 career AHL games with the Wild (2019-21).

 

Duhaime skated in three seasons with Providence College of the Hockey East and collected 72 points (22-50=72) in 117 contests (2016-19). He was named to the Hockey East All-Star Third Team in 2018-19 and to the Hockey East All-Tournament team in 2017-18. The forward split the 2015-16 campaign in the United States Hockey League (USHL) between Chicago and Tri-City. He recorded 42 points (15-27=42) in 57 contests and helped the Storm win the 2016 Clark Cup Championship.

 

Duhaime was selected by Minnesota in the fourth round (106th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft.

Flames sign Defenseman Andy Welinski

Welinski appeared in 46 career games with the Anaheim Ducks over the past three seasons, notching his first career NHL goal and adding five assists. The 6’1′ 201lbs native of Duluth, MN has played 161 games in the AHL with both the San Diego Gulls and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms recording 32 goals and 72 assists for 104 points. ‘Canes agree to terms with Brendan Smith

RALEIGH, NC – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Brendan Smith on a one-year, $800,000 contract.

 

“Brendan is a veteran defenseman who will add physicality and toughness to our lineup,” said Waddell.

 

Smith, 32, tallied 10 points (5g, 5a) in 48 NHL games with the New York Rangers in 2020-21. The 6’2″, 200-pound blueliner has registered 110 points (29g, 81a) in 526 career NHL games with New York and Detroit. Smith has also skated in 163 career AHL games with Grand Rapids and Hartford, earning 88 points (27g, 61a). The Mimico, Ont., native was drafted by the Red Wings in the first round, 27th overall, of the 2007 NHL Draft.

‘Canes agree to terms with Jalen Chatfield

RALEIGH, N.C. – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Jalen Chatfield to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Chatfield $750,000 at the NHL level and $225,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level.

 

“Jalen is a reliable defenseman who can kill penalties,” said Waddell. “He’s coming off his first NHL season and we’re thrilled to add him to our organization.”

 

Chatfield, 25, tallied one assist in 18 NHL games with the Vancouver Canucks last season. The 6’1″, 187-pound defenseman has also skated in 142 career AHL games, recording 17 points (2g, 15a) with the Utica Comets from 2017-20. Prior to turning professional, Chatfield played 189 games with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League from 2014-17, earning 86 points (19g, 67a) and serving as an alternate captain during the 2016-17 season. The Ypsilanti, Mich., native skated in all four Memorial Cup games in 2017 as the Spitfires were crowned as Canadian Hockey League (CHL) champions.
