CFL Preview: Stamps play host to Argos to Kick Off Saturday Doubleheader

0

CALGARY — For the first time in over 600 days, football returns to Stampede City as the Calgary Stampeders are set to host the Toronto Argonauts.

Return seems to be the major theme approaching Saturday’s contest. The return of football to McMahon Stadium. And the return of teammates now turned opponents.

Home field advantage is often talked about in sports, but Calgary is the living embodiment of that. Since 2012 the Stamps have a home record of 60-12, cementing them as the most dangerous hosts in the league.

But the Argos are no strangers to success in Calgary.

Toronto’s Ryan Dinwiddie gets set to make his CFL head coaching debut at the place he once called home, his 2021 Argos may just be the perfect David to the Goliath that is McMahon Stadium.

What Toronto brings goes beyond the practice field and the film room. Dinwiddie and the Argos bring a sense of understanding, familiarity and readiness to Calgary.

“We know it’s going to be a challenge; Calgary is a tough place to play,” Dinwiddie said. “I just have to get the team ready to win, I don’t care what the score is we just have to score one more than them.”

The updated Boatmen roster features seven former Stampeders. From quarterback Nick Arbuckle to receiver Eric Rogers to veteran linebacker Cordarro Law, who donned the Red and White for five seasons, the Argos are comfortable playing in McMahon.

When asked about returning to Calgary, former Stampeder Eric Rogers had no time for reflection.

“It’s a business trip. I expect to go there and handle it like I do every game,” said Rogers. “Try to go out there and win, that’s the main goal.”

While familiarity is advantageous, the Double Blue are going to need more than a sense of comfort in order to secure a win in Week 1.

The Stampeders have been able to build an electric pass attack, commanded by a two-time Most Outstanding Player in Bo Levi Mitchell. Calgary found themselves among the league’s leaders in passing yards in 2019, averaging 312 yards per game.

A major factor as to why the Stampeders were so efficient through the air a season ago was the success of pass-catchers Reggie Begelton and Eric Rogers, neither of whom will be returning to Calgary this season. The pair accounted for 2,524 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns.

Calgary will be relying on young talent to help fill the void where veterans were lost. Mitchell believes it’s crucial for young players to be mindful of penalties.

“When you have a lot of young guys you’ve got to make sure they’re locked into the rules and locked into penalties,” said Mitchell.  “Special teams, turnovers and the penalty battle are what decide a lot of football games.”

One of these young players expected to take on a larger role is Hergy Mayala. The young National enters his sophomore season looking to build on an impressive rookie campaign after totalling 562 yards and five touchdowns.

It is no secret that the Argos will have to address Calgary’s passing attack, and the best way to do this? According to Dinwiddie, don’t let Mitchell get comfortable.

“He’s a winner. The guy has won over 80 per cent of his games,” said Dinwiddie when asked about the Calgary pivot. “Bo’s a winner and we need to find ways to make him uncomfortable.”

This will be no small task for Toronto as Mitchell was one of the hardest quarterbacks to bring down in 2019. The Red and White were one of the least sacked teams in the CFL, allowing just 34 sacks.

When looking at the roster moves the Boatmen have made over the course of the off-season, however, it’s evident they have the disruptive pieces necessary to put pressure on the Calgary backfield.

The rebuilt defensive line unit for the Argos doesn’t seem to be a concern for Dinwiddie.

“That’s the least of my worries, is the defensive line right now,” said Dinwiddie. “I’m comfortable with all those guys playing.”

The veteran leadership of Shane Ray and Law could be one factor easing Dinwiddie’s concern. Another could be the off-season addition of one of the league’s most revered pass-rushers in Charleston Hughes.

Hughes was the CFL leader in sacks in 2019 and has been one of the best at getting into the backfield since entering the league. Since 2015 the six-time All-Star has complied five consecutive seasons with 10 sacks or more. He remains the only player to accomplish this feat since Will Johnson in the early 90s.

As the Stampeders get set to defend McMahon Stadium from the Argonauts on Saturday night, there are great storylines to watch all over the field.

Nothing is guaranteed in this game, but one thing is certain. CFL fans everywhere are thrilled the season is finally here.

Kickoff is slated for Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. ET and can be watched on TSN and ESPN+ or followed along on CFL.ca’s Game Tracker.

No place like Home: Bombers top Ti-Cats in Season Opener

WINNIPEG — After falling behind early in the first quarter, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers took the lead and never relinquished it on their way to winning their home opener on Thursday night.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats scored on their first possession of the evening but after that, Winnipeg’s defence did the rest of the work, keeping Jeremiah Masoli and co. in check for the rest of the contest, on their way to a 19-6 victory.

Kenny Lawler was the star of the show for the Bombers after he scored two touchdowns, while running back Brady Oliveira rushed for 126 yards. Willie Jefferson continued to show why he won the 2019 Most Outstanding Defensive Player award, notching an interception in the victory.

Zach Collaros connected on 18 of 28 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns while Masoli passed for 242 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Jaelon Acklin scored the lone touchdown for the Tiger-Cats to go along with 98 receiving yards. Brandon Banks hauled in 73 yards on seven catches.

Kid Galahad will be fighting Jazz Dickens at Matchroom Headquarters in Brentwood, Essex, on August 7, 2021. The fight is scheduled to take place at 12 pm EST, and it will be a continuation of the previous bout between the two.

You will have an opportunity to place your bet today and see if it pans out. Clearly, one fighter is coming in as a heavy favorite, and that is Galahad. Yet, there are many moving parts in this upcoming bout, and you would do well to consider them all.

Galahad vs Dickens Time and Date, Where to Watch

Time: 12 pm EST

Place: Matchroom Headquarters, Essex, UK

Kid Galahad Comes in as Favorite

It’s definitely not surprising that Kid Galahad is looking to win another bout on Saturday, especially when his upcoming fight is a rematch with Dickens. Galahad is priced at (-350), giving him a fairly good chance of succeeding too, and not least because of his impeccable record.

He has suffered a single loss and fought in 27 bouts so far, concluding 16 of them with a KO. This fight is even more important for him as it will focus on winning the IBF world featherweight championship, which is vacant.

Looking at Galahad’s track record, there are definitely fights that reaffirm his skill and prowess as a boxer. Other than his loss to Warrington, Galahad has not known a single loss. In fact, he went on a 25-winning streak making it one of the longest in the sport.

Galahad has taken out Clary, Berry, and Cayetano. He fought some pretty bad opponents, too, and his career is intertwined with stellar and middling fighters, but it’s how it goes in professional boxing – everyone gets a shot.

To be perfectly honest, though, Galahad took on some of the weaker competitors, although this is the nature of his category, too.

Jazz Dickens Determined to Win Rematch

Jazz Dickens is priced at (+275) definitely not too bad, and he is riding an eight-win streak after losing to both Ward and Rigondeaux in 2016 and 2017. Even though Dickens has taken boxing at a much slower pace, he has fought some notable boxers, too.

His most recent bouts against Walsh, Wood, and May have been a true test to his mettle and proof that when Dickens wants to, he can really get back to the very top of the sport. However, if he really wants to make up for his loss in fight one, he will have to win the rematch, plain and simple.

Is betting on Dickens a good call here? With Galahad set to win at (-350), it may be a bit of a stretch to back Dickens. Then again, you might want to look into the Totals or Prop Bets for the fight.

Sounders FC adds Brzilian attacker LÉO CHÚ and French Winger NICOLAS BENEZET on transfer deadline day

0

Chú, a 21-year-old playmaker from Brazilian side Grêmio, joins the Rave Green under the league’s new U-22 player initiative; Benezet comes to Seattle from Colorado, having previously played for Toronto FC and multiple French sides in his native country

SEATTLE, WASH. – As the secondary transfer window in Major League Soccer comes to a close on Thursday afternoon, Seattle Sounders FC added two attacking players to its roster prior to the deadline. From leading Brazilian side Grêmio, Seattle has acquired 21-year-old attacker Léo Chú, who joins the club on a four-year contract with an additional club option year. He will occupy an international roster position and a U-22 initiative slot. He is being formally added to Seattle’s roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.

Additionally, the club has signed veteran winger Nicolas Benezet from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM). As part of the agreement, Colorado can acquire an additional $50,000 in GAM should certain conditions be met. The 30-year-old Frenchman has spent the past three campaigns in MLS with Colorado and Toronto FC, having previously represented multiple professional sides in his native country. Benezet’s contract is guaranteed through the 2021 season, with a club option for 2022. Colorado is retaining a portion of his salary budget charge, and he will occupy an international roster position.

“We are pleased to add two quality players in Léo and Nicolas before the end of the secondary transfer window. Both are dynamic attackers that strengthen our roster as we begin the home stretch of the 2021 season,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey.

Lagerwey continues, “In Léo’s case, we were able to utilize the league’s new under-22 player initiative, and he is a player that was high on our list in this regard. His speed and versatility make him an intriguing option for our club, and like any young player, we are looking forward to integrating him into the organization and giving him the tools to succeed. Nicolas is a veteran and knows our league well from his time in Colorado and Toronto. We believe he can support multiple positions, and as we’ve seen many times already this season, having depth at several spots is critical. We’d like to officially welcome Nicolas and Léo to Seattle and we look forward to getting them up to speed in the coming days.”

A promising 21-year-old attacker that can play multiple positions, Chú comes to the Emerald City from storied Brazilian club Grêmio. Known for his pace and attacking ability, Chú is capable of playing attacking midfield or on the wing, where he has featured primarily for Grêmio on the left. Chú has made 38 professional appearances for the Porto Alegre side and on loan for fellow Brazilian club Ceará Sporting Club between 2019 and 2021, recording five goals across all competitions. He is the first player to be acquired by Sounders FC using the league’s new U-22 player initiative.

“Both Léo and Nicolas fit our club’s needs across multiple positions and we are excited to welcome them to Seattle,” said Sounders FC Senior Vice President of Soccer Operations & Sporting Director Craig Waibel. “Léo’s versatility and attacking profile are attributes that stood out to our club during the scouting process, and we believe he has the potential to make an impact as he settles in the United States and continues developing his game. With Nicolas, he knows what it takes to compete in this league, and he is effective at playing multiple positions across the midfield. Whether on the wing or a more central attacking role, we like that he gives Brian and our assistant coaches options at various spots.”

Benezet joins the Rave Green after making 23 appearances and recording four assists for Colorado since the beginning of the 2020 MLS season. Prior to his time at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, the French international made 12 appearances for Toronto FC after joining the Reds during the 2019 summer transfer window from French side Guingamp. He played in all four of Toronto’s matches in the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. He also recorded a goal against Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference Championship that season, scoring three goals during the 2019 campaign before falling to Sounders FC in MLS Cup at Lumen Field. A native of Montpellier, France, Benezet played more than 200 professional matches in his native country for Nîmes, Évian, Caen and Guingamp. He has played attacking midfield and left wing throughout his career.

Earthquakes Acquire Forward Jeremy Ebobisse in Trade with Portland Timbers

24-year-old USMNT forward has scored 23 goals since 2019

SAN JOSE, Calif.  – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has acquired forward Jeremy Ebobisse (ee-BO-bis-see) from the Portland Timbers in exchange for $667k of General Allocation Money (GAM) in 2022 and $500k of GAM in 2023. Portland could receive an additional $50k of 2023 GAM for performance-based incentives. Portland will retain a portion of the player’s 2021 salary budget charge. The Earthquakes have also signed Ebobisse to a new contract through the 2024 MLS season.

“I think the Earthquakes and the project that they’ve been building, especially since Matias [Almeyda] has been at the helm, is something that’s been really exciting to watch from afar,” said Ebobisse. “As an individual, I look at them and I see a unified group that’s all going in one direction, through thick and thin, always backing each other. I want to add my personality to the group, learn from everyone that’s already there, and try to add what I bring to the table on the field. It’s an exciting project, in which there’s a lot of faith in me to score a lot of goals. Ultimately I want to help the team in every way possible.”

Ebobisse, 24, has spent his entire professional career with the Portland Timbers, tallying 26 goals and eight assists, including five game-winning goals and two game-winning assists, across 88 appearances (54 starts). He has scored 23 goals in 65 appearances since the start of the 2019 season, tied for 11th most in MLS during that time.

“We couldn’t be more excited about bringing Jeremy to San Jose,” said Earthquakes Technical Director Chris Leitch. “Jeremy is an exciting young player with significant MLS experience and a proven track record for scoring goals. We think he’ll be a great leader for our team and a great ambassador for our community.”

“He’s a player that we have been eyeing for a while now,” said Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda. “When this opportunity came up, with support from our ownership group, we’re adding a young player who we believe will be important for our project.”

Ebobisse joined the Timbers at 19 years old as the fourth-overall selection in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, two picks ahead of Quakes captain Jackson Yueill.

After a year and a half as a role player, including time on loan with Portland Timbers 2 of the United Soccer League (USL), Ebobisse emerged as a starter towards the end of the 2018 season. He made eight appearances and five starts over the final two months of the regular season, recording two goals and two assists. He then started all six matches of their postseason run, including MLS Cup vs. Atlanta, notching one goal and one assist in the playoffs.

Ebobisse followed up his late-season emergence with a breakout campaign in 2019, making 25 starts while appearing in all 34 regular season matches and tallying 11 goals and an assist. He was the third youngest player in MLS to score at least 10 goals that season.

In the COVID-shortened season of 2020, Ebobisse finished with eight goals, tied for 11th most in MLS, and two assists. He also helped the Timbers win the MLS is Back Tournament, appearing in all seven of the team’s matches and scoring four goals – one in each of their three Group Stage games and one against the Philadelphia Union in the semifinals.

So far in 2021, Ebobisse has scored four goals in 13 appearances (11 starts). He and Quakes forward Cade Cowell are two of just eight American players with at least four goals this season.

Ebobisse, of Cameroonian and Malagasy descent, was born in Paris, France before moving to the United States at two years old and later choosing to represent the U.S. at the international level. After helping the U.S. U-20s win their first-ever Concacaf U-20 Championship in 2017, he competed at the FIFA U-20 World Cup later that year and scored two goals. With the U.S. U-20s and U-23s, Ebobisse played alongside new teammates Jackson Yueill and JT Marcinkowski. He has since made one appearance for the senior national team, starting in a friendly vs. Panama in January of 2019.

Ebobisse played two years at Duke University (2014-15), where he tallied nine goals and seven assists in 38 appearances. He also represented D.C. United’s U-23 side in the Premier Development League (PDL) in 2015. After leaving Duke, Ebobisse scored one goal in five appearances for USL side Charleston Battery in 2016 before entering the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.

Ebobisse was named a finalist for the 2020 MLS WORKS Humanitarian of the Year award for his contributions on the Executive Board of the Black Players for Change organization. The award was ultimately given directly to the organization for their work to bridge the racial equality gap that exists in society.
