RECAP: Columbus falls 2-1 to Seattle Sounders FC in MLS Cup rematch
Bradley Wright-Phillips gave Columbus Crew a 1-0 lead late in the second half, but back-to-back goals from Xavier Arreaga and Will Bruin helped Seattle snatch a 2-1 road victory on Saturday night at Lower.com Field.
Wright-Phillps had the Crew in the driver’s seat after opening his Crew account in the 77th minute, but Arreaga and Bruin scored in a wild two-minute span right before second-half stoppage time, allowing the Sounders to take all three points.

Seattle had their chances in the first half, perhaps most notably off a header from Yeimar Gomez Andrade set up by a Joao Paulo free kick that forced Columbus goalkeeper Eloy Room into a reaction save.
Raul Ruidiaz and Fredy Montero each also had looks for Seattle in opening half-hour, but Ruidiaz saw his 13th-minute laser shot go just high, while Montero saw a look from distance saved again by a sprawling room.
Columbus had perhaps their best chance of the first half in the 34th minute off a free kick from Lucas Zelarayan that was met with a whipped header from Jonathan Mensah that the center back put high of the target.
Wright-Phillips would find Columbus’ breakthrough in the 77th minute after entering the match as a second-half substitute. The longtime New York Red Bulls star slotted home a point-blank finish after a Zelarayan corner kick was headed down in front of goal, giving the hosts the tally that would stand as the game-winning strike.
That looked like it would be enough to give the hosts the victory, but the Sounders would strike back with a pair of late tallies, first from an unlikely source in Arreaga. The center back got his foot to a cross from Jimmy Medranda for a close-range finish to tie it at 1-1.
Bruin then found a huge game-winner slotting him his first goal of the season with a clinical finish from inside the area just one minute later for the decisive tally.
Columbus returns home next Friday for the ‘Hell is Real’ rivalry match vs. FC Cincinnati. Kickoff on Friday is slated for 6:30 p.m. ET at Lower.com Field.
MATCH RECAP: Sounders FC Scores Two Late Goals in 2-1 Comeback Win Over Columbus in MLS Cup Final Rematch
Sounders FC win its third road game in seven days, a first in club history; After three-match road swing, Seattle returns to the Emerald City to prepare for lone home clash of the season with archrival Portland on Sunday, August 29 (7:30 p.m. PT / ESPN, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM)
COLUMBUS, OHIO – Playing its third road match in seven days, Seattle Sounders FC (12-3-6, 42 points) concluded its cross-country trip with a 2-1 win against the Columbus Crew (6-9-6, 24 points) on Saturday evening in Central Ohio. Saturday’s match marked Seattle’s first trip to newly constructed Lower.com Field, with the match being played in front of a crowd of 19,401 and a national television audience on network FOX. A rematch of the 2020 MLS Cup Final, today’s result moves Seattle’s all-time record in the regular season against Columbus to 7-4-5, with the club holding a 5-2-1 advantage in Ohio. The result marks the club’s third road win in the past seven days, the first time Sounders FC has earned nine points in a three-match road stretch in club history.
After a scoreless first half, Columbus struck first when substitute Bradley Wright-Phillips controlled a deflected ball off a corner and was able to guide it into the back of the net in the 77th minute. The lead didn’t last long as Seattle answered back courtesy of Xaiver Arreaga in the 88th minute. Following a corner kick, Arreaga was able to put the finishing touch on a Jimmy Medranda cross to level the score. The comeback was completed just a minute later courtesy of Will Bruin’s first goal of the season, on Medranda’s second assist on the night. The Colombian wingback dribbled through the left side of the 18-yard box before laying if off to Bruin for a deft shot into the far corner of the net.
After three consecutive away matches in Portland, Dallas and Columbus over the past seven days, Sounders FC returns to the Pacific Northwest tonight. Next comes the 2021 MLS All-Star Game in Los Angeles on August 25, with a club-record six Sounders FC players selected. The Rave Green return to action against archrival Portland Timbers on Sunday, August 29 (7:30 p.m. PT / ESPN, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM). The Cascadia clash is part of a special day of soccer that sees NWSL sides OL Reign and Portland Thorns meet in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Lumen Field. The day will also see the clubs celebrate the life and legacy of Jimi Hendrix.
MATCH NOTES
Seattle sits atop the Western Conference standings with 42 points. It grows its lead over Sporting Kansas City and the LA Galaxy after those sides drew and lost this weekend, respectively.
The result marks the club’s third road win in the past seven days, the first time Sounders FC has earned nine points in a three-match road stretch. The past week is also the first time the club has ever had to play three MLS regular season matches in a seven-day span.
Forward Will Bruin opened his 2021 account with the late game-winner in the 89th minute. The 11-year MLS veteran has 72 career goals, good for 10th among active players.
Xavier Arreaga’s 87th-minute equalizer was his second goal of the season, having previously found the net against LAFC on May 16.
Jimmy Medranda’s two assists were his first of the season, to go along with his two goals scored in 2021.
Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer made eight changes to his starting lineup from the squad that defeated FC Dallas 1-0 on Wednesday. Fresh into the starting group were goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland, defenders Alex Roldan, Yeimar Gómez Andrade and Brad Smith, midfielders João Paulo, Nico Lodeiro and Fredy Montero, in addition to forward Raúl Ruidíaz.
After bouts with injury during the first half of the season, club captain Nico Lodeiro made his first start of 2021 on Sunday afternoon. Coincidentally, Lodeiro’s last start in Rave Green came during the 2020 MLS Cup on December 12 of last year, in Columbus against the Crew. Since joining Seattle during the 2016 summer transfer window, the Uruguayan playmaker has appeared for Seattle 126 times in regular-season play, starting 122 of those contests, recording 33 goals and 58 assists.
Seattle defender Nouhou made his first matchday roster since May 30 in a 1-1 draw with Austin FC, making the substitutes’ bench. The Cameroonian international was previously out with an adductor injury. He now heads to the MLS All-Star Game in Los Angeles next week, where he will join five of his Seattle teammates. He has made nine starts in 2021.
Sounders FC moves to 7-4-5 in regular-season play against Columbus, with the club holding a 5-2-1 advantage in the State of Ohio. Outside of MLS regular-season action, the two sides have met twice: the 2020 MLS Cup in Columbus (a 3-0 win for the Crew), and the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final (a 2-1 victory for Seattle at Lumen Field).
Today’s match in Ohio was also noteworthy because it marked the first encounter between Seattle and Columbus at newly constructed Lower.com Field, which opened earlier this season. All previous matches in Ohio between the clubs had taken place at Columbus’ original home, Historic Crew Stadium.
In 2021, Sounders FC is now 7-1-2 away from the Emerald City, good for 23 points, the best mark in the league.
Following the club’s third and final road match of the week on Sunday in Columbus, six Sounders are heading to the MLS All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Raúl Ruidíaz, João Paulo, Yeimar Gómez Andrade, Nouhou, Alex Roldan and Cristian Roldan were among the 28-man roster that will face the Liga MX All-Stars at Bank of California Stadium. This marks the first MLS All-Star appearance for each of the six Seattle players, who were all selected via the fan, player and media vote. Notably, the simultaneous All-Star Game selection of Alex and Cristian Roldan marks the first time a pair of brothers have been named to an MLS All-Star Game in the same year.
Saturday’s match on FOX marked Seattle’s third network television contest of 2021. The club previously played in front of a free-to-air TV audience when the Rave Green hosted Atlanta United on May 23 at Lumen Field. That match was also FOX. Additionally, Seattle’s 2-1 May 9 win at Portland aired on ABC.

JAVIER PÉREZ – HEAD COACH, TORONTO FC
The past couple games, you guys have played well, but have fallen short of collecting the points. How would you rate the performance tonight?
It was a really poor game from the beginning when we give away a couple of goals, the goals they come like that. And we can read between the lines but I take the blame on this one. I think it’s my fault from player selection and I think some of the players were just not ready for this game.
I can make excuses. I can say that players were injured, but the reality is I have to point the finger at me and take the blame for the game tonight.\
Can you legitimately compete with the centre back group that you’ve got right now?
When we are all on the team, I think we can. It wasn’t in the cards today. I think it was difficult. It was a difficult game from the beginning, but I don’t think it was just the centre back situation.
As you know, Chris (Mavinga) couldn’t join us, and then Eriq (Zavaleta) was limited with a hamstring that he was taking care of from the previous game. Even the previous game he was playing limited. But I think it is more than the centre backs. When we give away the ball easy as we did tonight, and it put us in a very vulnerable position, and we concede goals early on, then everything gets disorganized, right.
So it’s not always the centre backs. It’s more things.
I know you’ve been working hard to work on the defensive side of your game, but are you surprised that the attacking part of your game hasn’t really clicked as well as maybe it should be, particularly with your Designated Players out there and that kind of thing?
Yes, I think once you start the game, at the very beginning of the game, it wasn’t bad really. We were in between lines. The question is, once you concede the goal, once you make a mistake or two mistakes. I think if we look at the beginning of the game, we start to have possession early on, but then when we start making mistakes, losing balls that we don’t have to lose and we have to run back, is when we are in trouble.
So it’s not only the front players that they didn’t keep tonight. I think if we are solid and we are settled like we were in the last couple of games, we would find a way to score in this game. But it’s just very distracting for the team to concede two goals the way we did, the first two goals.
By my count, the team is winless in 12 games when you concede the first goal. Can you pinpoint what is it that is about this team that just has a hard time coming from behind to get results?
I think once you concede a goal like that, it’s extremely difficult to pull the team together. Especially a day like today, we are playing away from home, everything is against us, and obviously the whole season that we are having is taking a toll on the players. It depends on the character, the personalities. Sometimes some players they can go through and fight through the difficulties, and some others, mentally, don’t have that character.
I think it’s just a matter of how the season has been progressing, and when you get a strong setback like every goal in the game, after it’s more difficult to get composure and get the team going.
Can you take us in that locker room, what’s the mood of the group and what do you say after a night like that?
I think the group, they acknowledge that we are in a difficult situation. And it’s a hard one to take. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror and see if we are doing everything we can, starting with me. But again, you take the blame for this one. I think it’s a good learning curve tonight for us, and all that we want is to focus on the next game. It’s going to be the derby (against CF Montréal). Everybody is going to be motivated for that game on Friday.
A lot of changes to the lineup tonight from the lineup that you had in Atlanta, obviously a short turnaround for a midweek game to a weekend game, but there have been a lot of changes in the lineup lately. Are you feeling like a chemist just trying to find the right formula with this team to be able to get the group over the line and get some good results?
Personally, I don’t. I think today we have enough legs on the field. As you point out, we had enough players that they were rested. And therefore, some players were not there, really.
But I think this is going to be a necessary evaluation on the way we address the starting lineup, and again, I take blame on that. I think we have to learn from the experience tonight starting with myself and avoid these kinds of situations going forward because time is ticking, and we cannot make any more mistakes.
OMAR GONZÁLEZ – DEFENDER, TORONTO FC
Omar, your coach said tonight that he put a lot of the blame of the performance off the team on himself tonight but he also said that some of the players just weren’t ready to play. Do you agree with that assessment or can you give us your thoughts on what went down tonight?
Yeah, times like these, the coach tries to take the blame for everything, and you know, try and protect the players, but if we are honest, if we are looking at ourselves in the mirror, how many of us can state that we were ready to play tonight?
Some of us felt like we were but then as the game went on the first ten minutes, we weren’t sharp enough. We gave up a turnover which led to the first ball which we know has been killing us throughout the season. So we knew we couldn’t allow that and still we allowed it to happen.
And the second goal, we just leave ourselves exposed and leave myself in a tough situation. Were enough guys, honestly ready to go, I don’t think so, or else we would have had a different first 15 minutes of the game.
And so it’s hard to swallow. I mean, the guys who are in it are hurting. We are trying to get ourselves out of this situation. We are trying to dig ourselves out. But somehow we keep on digging ourselves even deeper by making these mistakes, and so it was a tough one tonight.
I think it’s 12 games now where you’ve conceded the first goal and you haven’t won any of those games. Can you speak to where this team has such trouble coming from behind?
Can I speak to why we struggle to rescue points? Well, listen, in the beginning of the season and even still now, we’re not doing a good enough job on the defensive end, just being smart of when to just get rid of the ball and play it up the field and put pressure on the other team.
Like tonight, we’re away from home and the beginning of the game, is it the right tactic to try and play out of everything or should we go long and put the pressure on them? Are we being too naïve? These are all good questions.
On the other side of it, our attacking side, are we getting enough shots on goal; are we getting enough clear opportunities, or are we just hitting into the attacking third and just passing the ball around, and it never amounting to anything?
And so you know, there’s a lot of stuff going on that you could point to. Tonight we tried to still fight and find a way to get ourselves back in the game. We had a couple chances and we’re just not clinical enough. And so those are the reasons.
You mentioned in the response to the first question that the players were not ready to play tonight. Looking at the standings and how dire things are in the standings, how is that possible? Why are the players not ready to play?
That’s how it turned out. It turned out that the players weren’t ready to play. But before the game started, of course everyone is ready to play. Everyone is warming up and everyone’s trying to get themselves going. And Javi (Pérez) picked a squad and everyone was confident going into the game. But once the game started, you know, you could tell quickly who was ready and who wasn’t, and so you know, maybe I — maybe I didn’t word it correctly. But the group that Javi (Pérez) picked stepped on the field looking to get a result, and it just didn’t happen. Given our — given where we are in the standings, of course we are giving it our all. No one quit tonight. You know, I personally was dying out there. But I kept going. Other guys kept going and we’re not giving up. We still are trying to find our way out of this. It’s difficult, yes, but we are not going to quit. We are not going to give up on this club, the players on this team. We’re the only ones that can get ourselves out of this.
And so as we look to this game against Montréal, we have to get a good week of training in and we have to focus and we have to be all-in on the same mission, and that’s getting a result against Montréal.
Are you surprised that the attacking side of the team’s game is not clicking more, given some of the dynamic players you have on this team?
Of course. Of course I’m surprised that we don’t get more opportunities on goal and more goals in general, given the quality that we have on our side.
And so, yeah, absolutely. We definitely have the quality to do to teams what they are doing to us, and constantly putting pressure on getting goals and winning by multiple goals. Yeah, it’s frustrating.
How tough is it for a young player to step into a team that’s going through a struggling time like this? How difficult is it to come on the field?
You could look at it one of two ways. A young player comes in and no matter the circumstances, we are already in a bad way, but you can come on and feel free to impose himself and show what he has by being brave and just going out there and playing.
And so you know, we are not in this position because of him. So young players can come on the field and be free and play, and so there shouldn’t be much pressure on the young guys coming in and trying to give us a jolt of energy and show what they have.
MATCH RECAP: Benji Michel Nets Game-Winner in Lions’ 1-0 Victory Over Chicago Fire
Mason Stajduhar records first professional shutout in win; Oscar Pareja ties for Club all-time wins record
ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City SC (9-4-7, 34 points) took a 1-0 shutout victory over Chicago Fire FC (5-11-5, 20 points) on Saturday night at Exploria Stadium. Benji Michel scored the eventual game-winner in the fixture in the 51st minute, good for his fourth goal of the year, tying Head Coach Oscar Pareja for the Club all-time wins record with Jason Kreis, each with 22 victories at the helm. Pareja reached the mark in 16 less matches than Kreis, managing his 49th match on Saturday as opposed to Kreis’ 65.
With the victory, goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar recorded the first clean sheet of his professional career, tallying five saves on the night to set a new single-game high. Stajduhar also tied the Club-record for consecutive matches unbeaten to start his Orlando City career, a record set by Tally Hall in 2015.
The match also saw Tesho Akindele set a new career high in assists in a single campaign, recording his fifth of the season, while Homegrown midfielder Raul Aguilera made his Orlando City debut, entering the match in the 85th minute for Joey DeZart.
Head Coach Oscar Pareja:
“A fantastic performance for the boys, especially for what they are getting through and tonight for the youngsters in Orlando where Mason [Stajduhar] and Raul [Aguilera] stood out today and showed their presence and the development of our Academy here. Competing and winning those three points means a lot for the Club, for the players. I think in the game we were good, we managed the tempo much better. The last six or seven minutes where Chicago started sending balls in the box, we had to defend with some suffering there, but overall I thought that our behavior was very good and what we wanted with the personality to create our sequences, create our chances. We would like to be more precise as we have been saying all along on scoring goals and obviously not suffering that much, but I’m very proud of this group. Today they got an enormous victory in front of our fans. It’s an invitation to what is coming with two more games at home, especially our derby and we will be ready. We’re proud and happy for this victory.”
Scoring Recap:
51’ Benji Michel (Tesho Akindele) – ORL 1, CHI 0
The Lions took the lead shortly after the break, with Tesho Akindele picking the pocket of the Chicago defense, finding Benji Michel on the turnover. The City Homegrown then dribbled into space before sending his shot into the lower left corner of the net from the edge of the area for his fourth goal of the year.
Match Notes:
Benji Michel netted his fourth goal of the season on the night, trailing only Nani on the side in finishes this season.
Tesho Akindele tallied his fifth assist of the season on Michel’s finish, a new career high for the Canadian international in a single campaign.
Mason Stajduhar recorded the first clean sheet of his professional career, posting five saves to keep the Fire scoreless in the match.

Raul Aguilera made his Orlando debut in the match, entering the game in the 85th minute for Joey DeZart. Aguilera became the fifth Homegrown to feature for the Lions this season with the appearance.
The match served as Robin Jansson’s 75th start as a Lion.
The Lions were forced into a first-half substitution, with Chris Mueller entering the game in the 30th minute for Nani.
Head Coach Oscar Pareja made two changes to his starting lineup entering Saturday’s match, with Nani and Ruan reentering the fold for the Lions.

GAME RECAP: Riders remain league’s only Undefeated team with win over Redblacks
REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders remain the only undefeated team in the CFL after defeating the Ottawa REDBLACKS 23-10.
It was a defensive showdown, Saturday night in Regina as both teams’ units came to play. Keeping both quarterbacks in check as Cody Fajardo passed for 321 yards while Matt Nichols connected on 19-23 for 176 yards it was the kickers who came to play as Brett Lauther went 5-5 on the night.
Through the first quarter of play, Ottawa and Saskatchewan’s defences were dictating the game. This played into Ottawa’s hands as they looked to follow up their Week 1 performance against Calgary.
After both teams jockeyed for position and looked to get the game’s first points on the board, Saskatchewan would strike first. Off the foot of Brett Lauther, the Riders broke the stalemate but the REDBLACK’s Lewis Ward would knock one through from 33 yards out to tie the game once again.
After poking and prodding at the Ottawa defence looking for areas to exploit, Riders’ offensive coordinator, Jason Maas dialled up a flea-flicker. After blanket-like coverage by De’Chavon Hayes saw the to ball intended to Kian Schaffer-Baker fall incomplete, the REDBLACKS would gain possession at their 31-yard line following a caught punt. While their offence would not amount to anything on their ensuing drive, a punt by Richie Leone would pin Saskatchewan on their own five-yard line.
After trading possessions and neither team breaking the tie, Cody Fajardo connected with Brayden Lenius on third down with three yards to go. While Ottawa would challenge the ruling on the field under the grounds that Lenius made the reception out of bounds, the call would stand, setting the Riders up on the Ottawa 22-yard line. Standing their ground, the REDBLACKS would force another Riders field goal, keeping the damage done to just three points.
After trading possessions for the remainder of the quarter, Lauther would add another field goal in the final seconds of the first half to give the Riders a 9-3 lead.
Cody Fajardo would be the first player to find the endzone as late in the third quarter as a reception made by Paul McRoberts set the Riders up near the goal line. After collecting the snap, Fajardo rolled out of the backfield to the right, cut right, cut left and lept over the goal line in a dazzling effort to put the Riders up 17-3.
Roughrider penalties would translate to a REDBLACK touchdown as after back-to-back 15-yard penalties were called against the Riders defence, Nichols would find R.J. Harris downfield to get them to the three-yard line. After failing to punch it in on the first attempt, Devonte Dedmon would get it over the goal line the second time to bring the game within seven points.
After Riders’ defensive back, Ed Gainey picked off Matt Nichols, the Riders looked to widen the gap. Fajardo led them down the field, dishing the ball out to Kyran Moore and William Powell, but it would be Lauther again tacking on the points for the Green and White on third down after Craig Dickenson opted not to go for it.
After what looked like an Ottawa turnover off a tackle by Don Unamba, it was ruled Roughriders ball. With time left fading, the Roughriders looked to put it away. After a successful conversion on a quarterback sneak on third-and-one by Fajardo, he would hand it off to Powell to eat the rest of the clock. With only 54 seconds left, a full-house backfield would allow Fajardo to find Kienan Lafrance for another first down, securing the team’s league-leading third win in a row.
Saskatchewan will now enjoy a bye-week while Ottawa will take on the BC Lions, Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
GAME RECAP: Argos hand Bombers first loss with commanding Home win
TORONTO — In his first career start under centre for the Toronto Argonauts, Nick Arbuckle handed Winnipeg their first loss of the season, orchestrating a 30-23 win.
The 27-year old looked calm, cool and collected during the heat of the game as finished his day with 23 of 32 passes completed for 310 yards, a passing and a rushing touchdown.
In an effort to move the ball against a stout defence, the Argos dished out a balanced attack. This included rushing attempts from John White and even a fake flea-flicker from DaVaris Daniels, the Argos were in Bombers’ territory and looking to score. D.J. Foster would end the Argos drive with six points after collecting a handoff from Arbuckle, bulldozing his way over Bomber defenders and over the goal line.
Looking to retaliate, Zach Collaros and the Bombers took the field.
Their subsequent drive would survive all of one play as after Brady Oliveira‘s forward progress gained the Bombers a pair of yards, Collaros was picked off by Dexter McCoil, putting the ball back in Arbuckle’s hands.
After sacrificing a season-high 13 points against in the first quarter and threatening to score again, a pair of game-altering plays by Winnipeg would help them close in on the Toronto lead.
It started with Winnipeg’s defence as a completely unblocked Jackson Jeffcoat met Arbuckle in the backfield, dislodging the ball from his clutch. With the ball wobbling at his feet, Jesse Briggs scooped and scored, stopping the onslaught of Argos offence. The Bombers’ offence would add another big play as after having only eight yards of offence in the first quarter, Collaros would find a wide-open Darvin Adams who had exploded up the sideline, beating Jamal Peters for a touchdown. This would bring the Bombers within range of the 16-14 Argonaut lead.
The Argos and Arbuckle would not go quietly into the Toronto night as he could deliver a strike to DaVaris Daniels in the endzone for a 35-yard touchdown for a big play of their own to increase the lead to eight points.
Just as fast as things going right for Toronto in the first half, they went south just as fast as in the opening seconds of the third quarter.
After DaVaris Daniels, who 100 receiving yards at the moment, suffered an injury from a thundering hit by Brandon Alexander, things compounded as Jeffcoat would find himself in the Argos backfield again to force a Toronto punt which was almost blocked. This would happen yet again. This time, it was by Alexander who collected the fumble, setting the Bombers shop up yet again. For the Argonaut’s sake, Darvin Adams would drop a pass from Collaros, forcing the Bombers to settle for a field goal.
Looking to respond with the ball on the 1-yard line after a 31-yard reception by Dejon Brissett, Arbuckle called his one number, forcing his way through the wall of double blue for a touchdown, increasing the lead to 30-15 and stopping the bleeding.
While things opened going Winnipeg’s way, another two-and-out would set the stage for Mike Miller who would make CFL history. After bringing down Daniel Braverman, Miller would record his 191st special teams tackle, passing former BC Lion Jason Arakgi who finished with 190 making him the new all-time leader in the category.
Winnipeg would try to find some answers late in the fourth quarter working against the clock. Collaros would connect with Kenny Lawler, setting the Bombers up in Argos territory. After being stuffed on first and second down, a third-down conversion would give the Bombers a pulse. In connecting with Rasheed Bailey in the endzone, the Bomers drew within seven.
In the final two minutes of the game, the Argos did not let up. Picking up 40 yards on their first play, the Argos continued to pour it on the Bombers’ defence. Once they crossed into Bombers territory, the Arbuckle would kneel out the final seconds on the clock, celebrating in jubilation with his teammates within plays.
Next up for the Toronto Argonauts will be a flight to Edmonton to take on the Elks, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Winnipeg will fly back home and welcome the Calgary Stampeders in a Saturday night matchup.
