The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled OF Josh Palacios from Triple-A Buffalo and he will be active for tonight’s game. To make room on the active roster, LHP Kirby Snead has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.

Additionally, RHP Elvis Luciano has been released from the roster and is now a free agent.

Pirates roster moves

0

The Pirates have recalled infielder Michael Chavis (uniform #31) from Triple-A Indianapolis and have reinstated outfielder Anthony Alford from the 10-day injured list.

To make room on the active roster, infielder Rodolfo Castro has been optioned to Double-A Altoona and infielder/outfielder Hoy Park has been optioned to Indianapolis.

The 26-year-old Chavis made his 2021 season debut with Boston as a pinch runner on 4/10 at Baltimore.

In 31 games with the Red Sox, Chavis hit .190 (15-for-79) with four doubles, two home runs and six RBI. He also hit .263 (25-for-95) with six homers and 17 RBI in 24 games with Triple-A Worcester before being acquired by Pittsburgh on 7/30 in exchange for LHP Austin Davis.

Chavis made his debut with Indianapolis on 8/4 and went 2-for-4 with a two-run double while playing first base at Iowa (game two). He homered in back-to-back games on 8/6-7 and went 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs scored on 8/7 at Iowa. He also hit a walkoff home run on 8/10, giving Indy a 9-8 win over St. Paul.

In his 17 games with Indianapolis, Chavis made seven starts at second base, six at first base, three at third base and one in right field while hitting .246 (17-for-69) with five doubles, five home runs and 12 RBI.

Alford has been on the 10-day injured list since 8/15 (retro to 8/13) with a lower back strain.

Twins reinstate Miguel Sanó from paternity list

0

Kenta Maeda placed on 10-day injured list

BOSTON – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have reinstated infielder Miguel Sanó from the paternity list. Sanó had returned to Minneapolis to be with his family after the birth of his daughter, Danea, last Thursday morning in Minneapolis.

Sanó has played in 98 games for the Twins this season, hitting .217 (73-for-337) with 18 doubles, 21 home runs, 53 RBI, 51 runs scored, 44 walks, a .308 on-base percentage and a .765 OPS.

To make room for Sanó on the 26-man roster, the Twins have placed right-handed pitcher Kenta Maeda on the 10-day injured list with right forearm tightness (retroactive to August 22). Maeda, who departed Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees in the fifth inning with the injury, has gone 6-5 with a 4.66 ERA (106.1 IP, 55 ER) with 32 walks, 113 strikeouts and a .258 (106-for-411) opponent batting average in 21 starts for the Twins this season. This marks his second trip to the Injured List this year, after missing 20 games with a right adductor strain prior to the All-Star Break.

UCF Men’s Basketball Announces Non-Conference Schedule

Highlighted by games against Michigan, Oklahoma, Florida State, Miami, and Auburn, UCF will play 11 non-conference games in total to open the year

ORLANDO – It will be one of the toughest non-conference schedules to date for head coach Johnny Dawkins and his UCF men’s basketball team as the Knights released their 2021-22 non-conference slate on Monday.

Highlighted by home games against Michigan and Oklahoma, as well as matchups against Florida State, Miami, and Auburn away from home, UCF will play 11 non-conference games in total to open the year. Home games at Addition Financial Arena will return to 100% capacity for the 2021-22 season.

“The non-conference schedule we have assembled for this season will be as challenging as any we have faced in the past,” said Dawkins. “As always, the hope is that this tough schedule prepares us for conference play and gives us the best possible opportunity to be successful.”

The Knights, who went 11-12 a year ago, will welcome Robert Morris to Addition Financial Arena for the season opener on Nov. 10 before heading to Coral Gables, Florida on Nov. 13 for a showdown at Miami. The Knights and the Hurricanes have squared off 10 times in the history of the series, with the last matchup coming in a 79-70 Miami win on Nov. 12, 2019.

The Knights will then welcome Jacksonville to Orlando for a game on Nov. 16 and will head to Evansville, Indiana for a Nov. 20 matchup against the Purple Aces, before taking on a pair of Power 6 opponents.

UCF, which was scheduled to face Oklahoma in its 2020-21 season opener before the game was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns, will host the Sooners on November 27. This year’s game will be just the second meeting between the Knights and the Sooners after Oklahoma edged out UCF by one point in 2019.

On Dec. 1, UCF will make its return trip to Auburn after defeating the Tigers, 63-55, last season. The UCF defense showed up big in the Knights’ last outing against Auburn as the Black and Gold held the Tigers to 32.3 percent shooting from the field and 20.6 percent from 3-point range.

Following the Knights’ showdown at Auburn, UCF will then return home to host Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina A&T on Dec. 5 and Dec. 11, respectively, before taking on Florida State in the Orange Bowl Classic on Dec. 18.

The Knights defeated the Seminoles for the first-time program history last season, snapping a number of Florida State’s impressive streaks in the process. UCF snapped Florida State’s then 27-game home winning streak, its 41-game non-conference home winning streak, and the Noles’ 31-game winning streak within the state of Florida.

The Knights’ win over FSU marked UCF’s fifth win over a ranked opponent under head coach Johnny Dawkins since he took over for the 2016-17 season and the third time the Knights have topped a ranked team on the road under Dawkins.

UCF will return to Addition Financial Arena to close out its non-conference schedule with a pair of home games against North Alabama (Dec. 22) and Michigan (Dec. 30).

The Knights and the Wolverines matched up for the first time in series history last season in Ann Arbor as Michigan handed UCF its first loss of the season. The Wolverines ultimately climbed the rankings and advanced all the way to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament before falling to UCLA, 51-49.

The Knights are poised for a big leap in 2021-22 as UCF will return 97 percent of its points scored and 96 percent of its minutes played from the 2020-21 season. Dawkins has also added to the team’s core with an impressive recruiting class, bringing in top 100 prospect Darius Johnson, top 150 recruit P.J. Edwards, junior college All-American Tyem Freeman, and UNLV senior transfer Cheikh Mbacke Diong.

Game times and broadcast information for all 2021-22 games will be announced at a later date. For single-game and season ticket information for the upcoming 2021-22 UCF Men’s Basketball season, click here, or call the ticket office at (407) 823-1000.

Red Sox reinstate infielder Christian Arroyo from 10-day injured list

Boston options infielder Jonathan Araúz to Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today reinstated infielder Christian Arroyo from the 10-day injured list. To make room on the active roster, the Red Sox optioned infielder Jonathan Araúz to Triple-A Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Arroyo, 26, has missed 60 games this season due to a left hand contusion (May 7-24), a right knee contusion (June 21-July 4), and a left hamstring strain (July 19-August 22). The right-handed hitter has batted .271 (42-for-155) with six home runs and a .792 OPS in 50 games for the Red Sox, making 41 starts at second base and one at first base. He appeared in three rehab games with Worcester last week, making one start at designated hitter and two at second base.

Araúz, 23, has played in 16 games over three stints with Boston this season, batting .207 (6-for-29) with one double and three walks. The switch-hitter has played in 55 games for Worcester this season, batting .224 (41-for-183) with four doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 27 RBI while making 33 starts at second base, 11 at third base, and eight at shortstop.

Padres dismiss pitching coach Larry Rothschild

0

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have relieved pitching coach Larry Rothschild of his duties, Manager Jayce Tingler announced today. Ben Fritz will serve as interim pitching coach for the remainder of the 2021 season.

“Larry has been a tremendous asset for our organization over the last two seasons, and we appreciate the experience, hard work and dedication that he brought to the position,” Tingler said. “We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
