TONIGHT’S OPPONENT: MINNESOTA WILD
The Minnesota Wild look for their third-straight win as they host the San Jose Sharks on Sunday, game three of San Jose’s four-game road swing. The Wild come into the game on the heels of a 1-0 win over Seattle on Friday, the Kraken becoming the 28th team to be blanked by goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who surpassed Ed Belfour, Dominik Hasek, Martin Brodeur and Tomas Vokoun for most franchises shut out in NHL history. Mats Zuccarello, who leads Minnesota in assists on the season, scored the lone goal of the contest. Third-year forward Kirill Kaprizov paces the club on the offensive end with 10 goals and 16 points with four goals and five points through five November games.

STORYLINES
KARLSSON KEEPS COOKING…Erik Karlsson saw his six-game point streak come to a close on Friday, finishing with 15 points (7g, 8a) in the six-game stretch. Karlsson, who became the first defensemen in NHL history to reach double-digit goals and assists in his team’s first 15 games, leads NHL blueliners in goals (10) and points (21), set a career best with at least one goal in four consecutive games (10/27/22 – 11/3/22, 7g), just the second-ever Shark defenseman to accomplish the feat. Karlsson, who was named Third Star of the Week by the NHL on November 7, is the third-ever NHL defenseman and first since 1929-30 season to reach double-digit goals in 13 or fewer games, Harry Cameron needing seven games in 1917-18 with the Toronto Arenas and King Clancy needing nine games in 1929-30 with the original Ottawa Senators. Following Friday’s games, Karlsson was tied for fourth in the NHL with 21 points alongside Artemi Panarin, Nikita Kucherov, Jason Robertson and Nathan MacKinnon while trailing only Connor McDavid (15g, 16a), Leon Draisaitl (9g, 18a) and David Pastrnak (9g, 13a) in scoring.

IT’S TIMO TIME… Timo Meier extended his scoring streak to seven games with a goal and an assist on Friday, bringing his total to seven goals and five assists in the seven-game run. Meier took sole possession of 10th on the Sharks all-time ranks in goals scored with his marker Thursday, surpassing Marco Sturm (128). The forward has lit the lamp in five consecutive games, matching his career long (previously 10/20/18 – 10/30/18, 6g) with six goals in that span, and has found the back of the net in six of the past seven contests.

HERTL HEATING UP… Tomas Hertl registered a season-high three points in Saturday’s (11/5) game against the Anaheim Ducks, including a goal and two assists, and extended his recent scoring run to points in five of the past six with a goal and an assist Friday (11/11) at Dallas. The forward has 13 points in the team’s previous 11 games dating back to October 20 at New York Rangers and has four multi-point efforts in San Jose’s last six games. He has goals in three consecutive contests for the first time this season and notched his 400th career NHL point on Friday with an assist.

CRANK THE POWER… The Sharks’ power play has been red-hot of late, cashing in on seven of 20 (35.0%) trips to the man-advantage since the start of a six-game home stand on October 25 for the second-best mark in the NHL in that span. The only game in that stretch the Sharks did not score on the power play was Thursday (11/10) at St. Louis, a contest in which the club did not have any power play opportunities. Most recently, the Sharks went 1-for-2 up a skater at Dallas on Friday (11/11) with Alexander Barabanov netting his first goal of the season.

PRIME PENALTY KILL…San Jose killed off their first 22 penalties of the season before finally allowing a power play goal on Oct. 22 at New Jersey, and has remained near the top of the league at 90.5-percent on the year, second-best in the NHL. San Jose has been operating at a league-best 88.0% shorthanded efficiency since the 2022 NHL All-Star break, and the Sharks have the league’s fourth-best penalty kill percentage since the start of the 2020-21 season (83.7%).

WORKING OVERTIME… San Jose has been logging plenty of ice time of late, going beyond the 60 minutes of regulation in four of the past seven games, including shootouts in three straight (11/1 – 11/5). The recent run was the fourth time in Sharks history that the team has reached a shootout in three straight, including February 5-9, 2021 (2-1), December 21-27, 2013 (3-0), and January 29-February 2, 2013 (2-1). The Sharks have never gone to a shootout in four straight.

STURM WARNING…Nico Sturm netted his fifth goal of the season during Saturday’s (10/29) game against Tampa Bay, the forward breaking a tie with Logan Couture (4) for second-most on the roster. Sturm has three goals and four points in San Jose’s last five games, lighting the lamp against Tampa (10/29), Vegas (10/25) and Philadelphia (10/23), and his five-goals-in-eight-games stretch was the best of his career.

CAPTAIN COUTURE…Logan Couture recorded three points (2g, 1a) in the Sharks 4-3 overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. San Jose’s captain opened the game’s scoring with a strike just 26 seconds in. Per NHL PR, this put him in a tie with Joe Pavelski for the most opening-minute goals in franchise history (eight). With his second goal of the evening – the 300th of his career – Couture became the third player to score 300 goals with the franchise, after Patrick Marleau (522) and Joe Pavelski (355). He is now second on the club in scoring with seven points (4g, 3a) in 10 games.

REIM TIME…Sharks goaltender James Reimer earned his first shutout of the season on Oct. 23 with a 30-save performance at Philadelphia. Reimer’s shutout, his fifth as a Shark, moved him into a tie with Aaron Dell for eighth on the franchise’s all-time shutouts list. Reimer also owns a .937 shorthanded save percentage since joining the Sharks at the start of the 2021-22 season, the best in the NHL in that span (min. 10 games played) and the best two-season stretch by a goaltender since the NHL began tracking the statistic in 1997-98 (min. 30 games played, second best is Cory Schneider from 2010-12 with a .936 SV% in 58 GP).

QUICK START KUNIN…Sharks forward Luke Kunin tallied points in each of his first two regular games with the Sharks, recording the secondary assist on Tomas Hertl’s goal on Oct. 7 and scoring his first goal as a member of the Sharks the next day. Kunin’s 21:23 minutes of ice time on Oct. 7 is the second highest he’s logged in his career and the most he has logged since 2019. His power-play marker on Oct. 8 was the first power-play goal of his career and the first special teams goal scored in the 2022-23 NHL season. Kunin had points on each of the Sharks first two power play strikes (1g, 1a) of the season, matching his career high for power play points in a season. Including exhibition and preseason, Kunin scored one point in each of the first six games he played with the Sharks.

NEW YORK – Washington Capitals forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel has been suspended for three games, without pay, for an illegal check to the head of Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Cal Foote during NHL Game No. 222 in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Nov. 11, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 1:52 of the second period. Aube-Kubel was assessed a match penalty.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Aube-Kubel will forfeit $16,216.23. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

NHL Morning Skate – Nov. 13, 2022

* Defensemen from past to present highlighted a jam-packed Saturday, with the Maple Leafs paying a heartfelt tribute to their all-time great Börje Salming.

Cale Makar surpassed the 50-goal mark in his career with two quick tallies and joined an elite list of NHL defensemen reaching the milestone in 191 games or fewer.

* The Devils extended the League’s longest active winning streak to nine games thanks in part to a collective effort that features four players with 10-plus points since the streak began.

MAKAR SURPASSES 50 CAREER GOALS, APPROACHES 200-POINT MILESTONE. . .
Cale Makar (2-0—2) scored two first-period goals in a span of 3:22 to surpass the 50-goal mark in his career, while Mikko Rantanen (1-3—4) had his second four-point outing in his last four games to help the Avalanche (8-4-1, 17 points) earn their fourth straight victory during their Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night at Ball Arena.

* Makar, who surpassed the 50-goal mark at a historic pace, boosted his career totals to 51-145—196 (191 GP) and will look to reach the 200-point milestone in the coming days. The Avalanche blueliner is poised to become the fastest defenseman in NHL history to record 200 points – Sergei Zubov (207 GP) holds the current mark.

. . . WHILE BLUELINERS ON ORIGINAL SIX CLUBS SHINE ON SALMING’S ‘HOMECOMING’
After the Maple Leafs held a special pre-game ceremony to honor franchise icon and trailblazer Börje Salming, a pair of defensemen later made an impact with their Original Six clubs as Toronto’s Jordie Benn and Boston’s Jakub Zboril each scored a game-winning goal.

* Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe, touched by Friday night’s Hall of Fame Game ceremony that featured Darryl Sittler and Mats Sundin by Salming’s side, started an all-Swedish starting lineup in tribute to the highest-scoring defenseman in franchise history (Calle JarnkrokWilliam NylanderPierre EngvallTimothy LiljegrenRasmus Sandin & Erik Kallgren). It marked the third time in NHL history a team’s starting lineup was entirely from one country other than Canada or the United States, with Detroit accounting for both previous instances with Swedish-born players (Nov. 21, 2013 & Nov. 5, 2014).

* Benn became the second defenseman in Maple Leafs history – and first in over 100 years – to score a game-winning goal in his team debut, following Joe Matte on Jan. 17, 1920. Along with becoming the second-oldest player in club history to score in his debut, Benn (35 years, 109 days) also became the third-oldest defenseman in NHL history to score a game winner in his first game with a franchise, behind only Mark Streit (39 years, 82 days on March 3, 2017 w/ PIT) and Marek Zidlicky (38 years, 29 days on March 4, 2015 w/ DET).

* After trailing 1-0, the Bruins battled back with Zboril becoming the eighth player – and first defenseman – in Bruins history to have his first career goal stand as the game winner, joining Tyler Randell (Oct. 14, 2015), Doug Mohns (Oct. 11, 1953), Zellio Toppazzini (Feb. 12, 1949), Mark Marquess (Jan. 15, 1947), Red Beattie (Dec. 16, 1930), Hago Harrington (Dec. 29, 1925) and Carson Cooper (Dec. 1, 1924). Zboril also became the sixth NHL defenseman in the past decade to achieve the feat and the first since Cale Makar (Game 3 of 2019 R1 w/ COL).

OFFENSE FROM THE DEFENSE TAKES OVER SATURDAY SLATE
With multi-goal outings from Edmonton’s Tyson Barrie (2-0—2), Colorado’s Cale Makar (2-0—2), Los Angeles’ Sean Durzi (2-0—2) and Chicago’s Jarred Tinordi (2-0—2), Saturday marked the fourth day in NHL history to feature four defensemen each score two or more times, joining Jan. 18, 2014March 30, 1993 and March 8, 1983.

DEVILS DEPTH SECURES NINTH STRAIGHT WIN
The Devils extended the NHL’s longest active win streak to nine games, their longest such stretch in nearly 15 years, and have relied on their offensive depth throughout the run following a game-winning goal from Jesper Boqvist – the sixth different New Jersey skater to score one through their current run.

* During their last nine-game run in 2007-08, Zach Parise led the way with 9-8—17 while 13 of the club’s 20 unique skaters scored a goal during the streak. This time around, the Devils have had 15 different goal scorers with only four players not having found the back of the net through their last nine wins.

CANADIENS, ISLANDERS EACH SCORE THREE GAME-TYING GOALS IN OVERTIME WINS
Mike Hoffman (1-0—1) and Zach Parise (1-0—1) both achieved a rare feat with their overtime goals after the Canadiens and Islanders each tied the game on three separate occasions against the Penguins and Blue Jackets, respectively.

Montreal, which scored three game-tying goals in the third period of a game for the second time in franchise history (also Jan. 7, 1919), netted two within 60 seconds of Pittsburgh’s go-ahead goals. The Canadiens became the fourth franchise Hoffman has scored an overtime goal with and trails only Jaromir Jagr (6: DAL, NJD, NYR, PHI, PIT & WSH), Bill Guerin (5: BOS, DAL, NJD, NYI & STL), Scott Young (5: ANA, HFD, PIT, QUE & STL) and Steve Thomas (5: ANA, CHI, NJD, NYI & TOR) for the most by any player in NHL history.

Brock Nelson scored two of New York’s three game-tying goals and Parise found the back of the net 39 seconds into overtime to help the Islanders improve to 8-2-0 following 2-4-0 start to 2022-23. Parise (38 years, 107 days) became the oldest player in Islanders history to score an overtime goal, besting the previous mark set by Lubomir Visnovsky (37 years, 200 days on Feb. 27, 2014).

McDAVID, DRAISAITL CONTINUE STRINGS OF SUCCESS
Connor McDavid (0-1—1) and Leon Draisaitl (0-1—1) extended their point streaks to 10 and 11 games, respectively, to help the Oilers (9-7-0, 18 points) hand the Panthers their first regulation loss at FLA Live Arena this season. With points in 11 straight games, Draisaitl matched Nikita Kucherov (11 GP from Oct. 15 – Nov. 8)and Jesper Bratt (11 GP from Oct. 13 – Nov. 3) for the longest streak of 2022-23.

* McDavid, who has 10-12—22 in his last 10 games, became just the fifth different skater in Oilers history to post an assist streak of at least 10 contests. He joined Paul Coffey (4x; longest: 17 GP in 1985-86), Wayne Gretzky (11x; longest: 17 GP in 1983-84), Jari Kurri (15 GP in 1983-84), and Glenn Anderson (10 GP in 1982-83).

GIROUX RALLIES SENATORS TO VICTORY IN RETURN TO PHILLY

Making his first appearance as a visitor at Wells Fargo Center following 15 seasons with the Flyers (including 10 as captain), Claude Giroux assisted on three of four unanswered goals by the Senators to spark his new club to victory. Giroux pushed his point streak to eight games (5-6—11) – the fifth time in his NHL career he has had a run of at least that length – and became the fourth player with a point streak of eight or more games in his first season with Ottawa.

CAPITALS, LIGHTNING TO CLOSE WEEKEND SET ON ESPN SUNDAY

The Capitals and Lightning will meet for the second time in three days, this time for a national broadcast on ESPN, with captains Alex Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos each chasing a milestone 300 goals apart. Ovechkin is 12 tallies shy of the 800-goal club, while Stamkos remains 12 away from joining “Ovi” and Sidney Crosby as the only active players to collect 500 goals with one franchise.

* Washington defeated Tampa Bay on Friday to move to 5-1-1 in their past seven meetings dating to 2019-20. The Capitals’ .786 point-percentage against the Lightning over that span ranks second among Eastern Conference clubs (NYR: .833).

HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER NIGHT IN MINNESOTA

The Wild will become the 11th club to host a Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night this season when they host the Sharks and seek a third straight win. Just over one year ago, Wild defenseman Calen Addison scored his first NHL goal during the club’s Hockey Fights Cancer night – which happened to be the seven-year anniversary of the date his grandfather died from lung cancer. Now 32 games into his NHL career, Addison enters Sunday second in assists among rookies (8).

NBA Preview: Brooklyn Nets at Los Angeles Lakers

0

Sharing the ball and reaping the rewards, the Brooklyn Nets are playing their best basketball of the season heading into a road matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

It will be the Nets’ second game in downtown L.A. in consecutive days after they used a fourth-quarter surge Saturday afternoon to pull off a 110-95 victory over the Clippers. Brooklyn is now 4-1 since Kyrie Irving was given a team-imposed suspension.

While Irving’s original suspension was for at least five games for promoting an antisemitic film, then not denouncing the content when given a chance, Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said his guard will be out at least one more game on Sunday.

Without Irving on the floor, the Nets appear to be trusting each other on offense, while staying connected on defense. Not one of Brooklyn’s past five opponents has scored more than 96 points.

The Nets held Clippers scoring machine Paul George to 17 points on 5-of-21 shooting. And as Durant suspected, the offense finally arrived. The Nets reeled off a 20-2 run in the fourth quarter to take control, while Seth Curry scored 14 of his 22 points in the period. Durant had 27 in the game.

Curry didn’t have an answer when asked if he would play in Sunday’s back-to-back.

The Lakers are expected to be without LeBron James after he left Wednesday’s loss to the Clippers, although he was upgraded to doubtful because of a left adductor strain. Without James on Friday, the Lakers fell 120-114 to the Sacramento Kings.

The Lakers are on a five-game losing streak after starting the season with five consecutive defeats. Los Angeles has won just twice and only the Houston Rockets at 2-11 have a worse record.

Anthony Davis scored 24 points with 14 rebounds against the Kings. Russell Westbrook continued to come off the bench and had 21 points, although a bevy of miscues that included a technical foul, a turnover and an intentional foul helped the Kings nearly erase all of a double-digit deficit in the second quarter.

Lonnie Walker IV returned for the Lakers after missing the previous two games with an illness and scored 19 points.

NBA Preview: Utah Jazz at Philadelphia Sixers

0

After his team fell for the first time in five games, Utah Jazz coach Will Hardy cut to the chase of what he thought went awry during his team’s 121-112 road loss to the Washington Wizards.

Even though they will wrap up a three-game Eastern trip against a short-handed Philadelphia 76ers squad on Sunday night, the visitors shouldn’t expect guest treatment if that’s the case again on the second night of a back-to-back set for both teams.

Even without injured James Harden — and using a mishmashed starting lineup — the Sixers beat the Atlanta Hawks 121-109 at home on Saturday night. Joel Embiid had a massive outing with 42 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Philadelphia.

That helped make up for the 76ers being without Harden for a fourth straight game because of a tendon strain in his right foot. The Sixers also were without Harden’s backup, De’Anthony Melton (back stiffness), and end-of-the-bench emergency guard Furkan Korkmaz was sidelined after injuring his left knee against the Hawks.

Coach Doc Rivers told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the 76ers need to learn how to “play around” the injuries.

With Embiid stepping up like he did and Tyrese Maxey scoring 26 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field and nine assists, Philadelphia found a temporary solution. It remains to be seen if that will work against the Jazz, if for no other reason than that Embiid also was at less-than-full strength as Saturday’s game progressed.

Embiid tweaked an ankle in the first half and also dinged his shoulder. He played through those setbacks, but it remains unclear whether he’ll suit up against Utah.

Like Philadelphia, the Jazz also have a recent impressive win over Atlanta. But Utah wasn’t able to turn it back on in the fourth quarter against the Wizards like the team did against the Hawks in Wednesday’s win.

Talen Horton-Tucker was a bright spot at Washington on Saturday, getting a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists in just 17 minutes. Jordan Clarkson led the Jazz with 18 points, Lauri Markkanen and Collin Sexton each scored 17, and new father Malik Beasley added 16 in the loss.

Conley envisions Utah bouncing back nicely after only its fourth loss in 14 games this season.

After winning its first game of the season at UC Riverside, Pacific is looking to bounce back after falling in its home opener against No. 2 Stanford. Pacific held Stanford to a five-point deficit after the first quarter, but the Cardinal’s shooting caught fire to defeat the Tigers in Stockton. The Tigers average 63.5 points per game in addition to grabbing 40.5 rebounds per game.

Anaya James and Liz Smith lead Pacific in scoring, with each averaging 12.5 points per game. Smith led the Tigers in scoring on Friday against No. 2 Stanford by pouring in 13 points, hitting a trio of 3-pointers in the process.
