NFC Players of the Week – Week 10

VIKINGS WR JUSTIN JEFFERSON, BUCCANEERS LB DEVIN WHITE & COMMANDERS K JOEY SLYE NAMED NFC PLAYERS OF WEEK 10

Wide receiver JUSTIN JEFFERSON of the Minnesota Vikings, linebacker DEVIN WHITE of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and kicker JOEY SLYE of the Washington Commanders are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played in Week 10 (November 10, 13-14).

OFFENSE: WR JUSTIN JEFFERSON, MINNESOTA VIKINGS

  • Jefferson recorded 10 receptions for a career-high 193 receiving yards and a touchdown in Minnesota’s thrilling overtime victory over Buffalo. It marked the most receiving yards by any player in the league in Week 10 and included a key, 32-yard acrobatic reception on fourth-and-18 with two minutes remaining in regulation.
  • This is the second-career Offensive Player of the Week award for Jefferson, also earning the honor in Week 11 of the 2021 season. He joins Pro Football Hall of Famers Cris Carter and Randy Moss as the only Vikings wide receivers to win the award multiple times.
  • He joins former college teammate Ja’Marr Chase as the only LSU wide receivers to win the award twice.  

DEFENSE: LB DEVIN WHITE, TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

  • White totaled nine tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble in Tampa Bay’s victory over Seattle in the first-ever NFL regular-season game in Germany. He was the only player in the NFC to record two sacks and a forced fumble in Week 10.    
  • This is the third-career Defensive Player of the Week for White and first this season:
    • 2020: Weeks 7, 15
    • 2022: Week 10
  • He becomes the third Tampa Bay linebacker to earn the honor at least three times, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks (six-time winner) and Hardy Nickerson (three-time winner).

SPECIAL TEAMS: K JOEY SLYE, WASHINGTON COMMANDERS

  • Slye converted all four of his field goal attempts in Washington’s victory over Philadelphia on Monday Night Football, connecting from 32, 44, 55 and a career-long 58 yards. He also converted both of his extra point attempts to account for 14 points, the most of any kicker in Week 10. Slye was also the only kicker to convert on multiple field goals from over 50 yards this week.
  • This is Slye’s second-career Special Teams Player of the Week award, also earning the honor as a rookie in Week 4 of the 2019 season with Carolina. He is the first Washington kicker to win since Dustin Hopkins (Week 13, 2020).
  • He is the fourth former Virginia Tech Hokie to win Special Teams Player of the Week multiple times, joining Andre Davis, Vaughn Hebron and Eddie Royal.

AFC Players of the Week – Week 10

COLTS RB JONATHAN TAYLOR, STEELERS LB ALEX HIGHSMITH & TITANS P RYAN STONEHOUSE NAMED AFC PLAYERS OF WEEK 10

Running back JONATHAN TAYLOR of the Indianapolis Colts, linebacker ALEX HIGHSMITH of the Pittsburgh Steelers and punter RYAN STONEHOUSE of the Tennessee Titans are the AFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played in Week 10 (November 10, 13-14).

OFFENSE: RB JONATHAN TAYLOR, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

  • Taylor rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts (6.7 average) in Indianapolis’ 25-20 road win over Las Vegas. He also added 16 receiving yards on two receptions. Taylor’s 147 rushing yards were the most in the AFC in Week 10.
  • Taylor’s 66-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give the Colts the lead was tied for the longest scoring play from scrimmage in the AFC last week.
  • This is the second-career Offensive Player of the Week award for Taylor (Week 11, 2021) and first this season.
  • He is the fifth Colts running back to win the award multiple times, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Edgerrin James, Eric Dickerson and Marshall Faulk, as well as Joseph Addai.

DEFENSE: LB ALEX HIGHSMITH, PITTSBURGH STEELERS

  • Highsmith recorded five tackles, two sacks, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble in Pittsburgh’s 20-10 victory over New Orleans. He was the only player in the AFC with two sacks in Week 10.    
  • This is the first-career Defensive Player of the Week award for Highsmith. He is the second Steeler to win the award this season, joining safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (Week 1).
  • Highsmith is the first-ever former Charlotte 49er win a Defensive Player of the Week award.

SPECIAL TEAMS: P RYAN STONEHOUSE, TENNESSEE TITANS

  • Stonehouse recorded eight punts with an average of 54 yards (47.3 net) and pinned three inside the 10-yard line in the Titans’ 17-10 win over Denver. His three punts inside the 10 tied for the most by a player in a single game this season.
  • This is Stonehouse’s first-career Special Teams Player of the Week award and he becomes the first-ever Tennessee rookie punter to earn the honor.
  • Stonehouse becomes the first player from Colorado State to ever win Special Teams Player of the Week.

Dodgers add four to 40-man roster

LOS ANGELES –  The Los Angeles Dodgers added catcher Diego Cartaya, infielder Michael Busch and outfielders Andy Pages and Jonny DeLuca to the 40-Man Roster.

Cartaya, 21, split the 2022 campaign with Great Lakes and Rancho Cucamonga last season, hitting a combined .254 (92-for-362) with 22 homers and 72 RBI in 95 games. The 2022 Dodgers Branch Rickey Minor League Player of the Year began the season with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, slashing .260/.405/.550 with nine homers and 31 RBI before getting promoted to Great Lakes on May 31. He was one of three representatives in the Sirius XM Futures Game at Dodger Stadium and finished the season with High-A Great Lakes, clubbing 13 homers and driving in 41. He has been with the Dodgers organization four seasons, hitting a combined .269 (178-for-661) with 36 homers and 125 RBI in 175 minor league games. He was originally signed on July 2, 2018, as an international free agent out of Maracay, Venezuela.

Busch, 25, spent the majority of the 2022 season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .266 (118-for-444) with 32 doubles, 21 homers, 79 RBI in 111 games. He started the season with Double-A Tulsa, hitting .306 with 11 homers and 29 RBI before being promoted on May 17. He has been with the Dodgers four seasons since being drafted with the 31st pick of the 2019 First Year Player Draft out of the University of North Carolina. In his 259 minor league games with the Dodgers, he has amassed 52 homers and 177 RBI while slashing .267/.374/.493.

Pages, 21, spent all the 2022 season with Double-A Tulsa, recording 26 homers and 80 RBI in 132 games for the Drillers. The outfielder was a member of the 2022 Arizona Fall League runner-up Glendale Desert Dogs, playing in 22 games, hitting .296 (24-for-81) with two doubles, five homers and 14 RBI. He signed with the Dodgers as an international free agent out of La Habana, Cuba and has played in 367 minor league games, hitting 86 homers and driving in 259 runs while recording an .897 OPS.

Deluca, 25, split the season between High-A Great Lakes and Double-A Tulsa, hitting a combined .260 with 25 homers and 71 RBI. He began the season with Great Lakes, hitting .245 with 18 homers and 51 RBI then finished slashing .298/.359/.606 with seven homers and 20 RBI in 25 games with Tulsa. In 225 minor leagues, he has hit a combined .263 with 48 homers and 148 RBI. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the 25th round of the 2019 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oregon.

Twins add four to Major League roster

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have added left-handed pitcher Brent Headrick; right-handed pitchers Matt Canterino and Casey Legumina; and infielder Edouard Julien and to their major league 40-man roster.

Headrick, 24, split the 2022 season between Double-A Wichita and High-A Cedar Rapids, combining to go 10-5 with a 3.32 ERA (108.1 IP, 40 ER), 25 walks, 136 strikeouts, a 1.08 WHIP and a .224 opponent batting average in 25 games (23 starts). The 6-foot-6, 235-pound lefty was named Twins minor league Pitcher of the Week three times on the season (May 1, September 4 and September 25) and ranked second among all Twins farmhands in strikeouts and innings pitched, and tied for first in wins. The Braidwood, Illinois native was selected by the Twins in the ninth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Illinois State University.

Canterino, 24, split last season between Double-A Wichita and the FCL Twins, combining to go 0-1 with a 1.95 ERA (37.0 IP, 8 ER), 23 walks, 54 strikeouts, a 1.16 WHIP and a .154 opponent batting average in 13 games (12 starts). He was placed on the Injured List in June and underwent Tommy John surgery in August. The 6-foot-2, 222-pound right-hander was selected by the Twins in the second round (54th overall) of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Rice University in Houston, Texas, and is currently ranked as the ninth-best prospect in the organization, per MLB.com.

Legumina, 25, pitched for both Double-A Wichita and High-A Cedar Rapids last season, going 2-6 with a 4.80 ERA (86.1 IP, 46 ER), three saves, 36 walks and 92 strikeouts in 33 games (16 starts). The 6-foot-2, 195-pound righty is ranked as the 26th-best prospect in the Twins system, per MLB.com. The Dallas, Texas native was selected by the Twins in the eighth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Gonzaga University.

Julien, 23, spent the 2022 season with Double-A Wichita, hitting .300 (120-for-400) with 19 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs, 67 RBI, 77 runs scored, 98 walks, 19 stolen bases, a .441 on-base percentage, a .490 slugging percentage and a .931 OPS in 113 games. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound infielder led the Texas League in walks and on-base percentage, while ranking third in OPS, sixth in slugging percentage, and seventh in batting average, and was named to the Texas League Postseason All-Star Team. He recently played in 21 games for Glendale in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .400 (28-for-70) with five doubles, five home runs, 17 RBI and a 1.249 OPS. Julien was named AFL Breakout Player of the Year after winning the league’s batting title, while ranking first in both on-base percentage (.563) and OPS. The Quebec, Canada native was selected by the Twins in the 18th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Auburn University and is currently ranked as the 14th-best prospect in the organization, per MLB.com.

Additionally, the Twins have avoided arbitration with outfielder Kyle Garlick and have signed him to a contract through the 2023 season.

The Twins now have 40 players on their major league roster: 24 pitchers, one catcher, six infielders and nine outfielders.

Additional Yankees Roster Move

The Yankees have added RHP Randy Vásquez to the Major League roster.

Vásquez, 24, went 2-7 with a 3.90 ERA (115.1IP, 106H, 56R/50ER, 41BB, 120K, 11HR) in 25 starts with Double-A Somerset in 2022. Among Yankees farmhands, the right-handed pitcher was tied for third in starts and ranked fifth in innings pitched. Following the season, was tabbed by Baseball America as the Yankees’ No. 9 prospect and labeled as having the “Best Curveball” among Yankees farmhands. In four minor league seasons (2018-19, ’21-22), Vásquez has gone 15-13 with a 3.10 ERA (307.2IP, 249H, 134R/106ER, 119BB, 331K, 22HR) in 68 games (64 starts). A native of Navarette, D.R., he was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on May 21, 2018.

Pirates set 40-man roster

The Pittsburgh Pirates have selected the following four players to their 40-man roster:

Mike Burrows (RHP) – The 23-year-old is currently rated as Pittsburgh’s No. 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline (No. 5 in Baseball America’s mid-season rankings)…Represented the Pirates organization at the 2022 All-Star Futures Game…Began the 2022 campaign with Altoona before being promoted to Indianapolis on June 16…Ranked sixth in the Eastern League in ERA (2.94) and batting average against (.199) and seventh in strikeouts (69) at the time of his promotion to Triple-A…Was tabbed by Baseball America as having the “Best Curveball” in Pittsburgh’s minor league system coming into this year…Posted a 2.20 ERA (49.0ip/12er) in 13 starts in 2021 with Greensboro…Has posted a 3.36 ERA (201.0ip/75er), 229 strikeouts and .213 batting average against in 52 appearances (49 starts) since making his professional debut in 2018…Was selected by the Pirates in the 11th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft.  

Endy Rodriguez (C) – The 22-year-old hit a combined .323 (148-for-458) with 39 doubles, four triples, 25 home runs, 95 RBI, .407 OBP, .590 slugging percentage and .997 slugging percentage in 125 games between Greensboro, Altoona and Indianapolis in 2022…Enters today rated among the top 100 prospects in the industry by both Baseball America (#95) and MLB Pipeline (#97)…Finished the 2022 season with the fifth-highest OPS (.997) among all qualified full-season minor league players…Is one of just two players in all of MiLB to to take home league MVP honors (Florida State and South Atlantic) in each of the last two seasons along with Jonathan Aranda of the Rays organization…Led all Pirates minor leaguers this past season in batting, OBP, slugging, OPS, hits, doubles, extra base hits (68) and total bases (270) while being named the organization’s Honus Wagner Player-of-the-Year. 

 Colin Selby (RHP) – The 25-year-old went a combined 2-3 with eight saves, a 2.27 ERA (35.2ip/9er), 43 strikeouts and .221 batting average against in 29 appearances (one start) between Altoona and Indianapolis in 2022…Surrendered just one home run in 32.2 innings of work with the Curve…Was scored upon once in nine appearances (9.0ip/2er) for the Surprise Saguaros during the Arizona Fall League…Held righthanders to a .503 OPS with Greensboro in 2021 while pitching exclusively in relief for the first time in his career…Has recorded a 3.47 ERA (231.0ip/89er), 237 strikeouts and .213 batting average against in 88 appearances (29 starts) since making his professional debut in 2018…Was drafted by the Pirates in the 16th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft.

Jared Triolo (INF/OF) – The 24-year-old spent the entire 2022 season with Altoona, where he finished second in the league in batting (.282), third in OBP (.376) and seventh in hits (120)…Took home the organization’s Bill Mazeroski Defender-of-the-Year honors for the second straight time this past season while seeing playing time at third base, shortstop and center field…Was selected 72nd overall by the Pirates in the Competitve Balance B round phase of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft…Earned a Rawlings Minor League Gold Glove Award at third base in 2021 while entering this season rated by Baseball America as the “Best Defensive Infielder” in Pittsburgh’s minor league system.

To make room on the 40-man roster, C Tyler Heineman, RHP Jeremy Beasley, RHP Junior Fernandez and LHP Manny Banuelos have been designated for assignment. The 40-man roster remains at 40 players.

Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today made the following roster moves:

  • Left-handed pitchers Chris Murphy and Brandon Walter were selected to the Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester.
  • Infielder/outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela, outfielder Wilyer Abreu, and infielder David Hamilton were selected to the Major League roster from Double-A Portland.
  • Right-handed pitcher Jake Reed and catcher Caleb Hamilton were designated for assignment.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Boston’s 40-man roster is now at 40.

Murphy, 24, is ranked by Baseball America as the Red Sox’ No. 8 prospect and No. 3 pitching prospect. The left-hander was named Portland’s Pitcher of the Year for 2022, posting a 2.58 ERA (22 ER/76.2 IP) in 15 outings (13 starts) for the Sea Dogs before he was promoted to Worcester on June 28. He also made 15 starts for the WooSox, going 3-6 with a 5.50 ERA (46 ER/75.1 IP). The California native was selected by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of San Diego.

Walter, 26, is ranked among the Red Sox’ top 10 prospects by both Baseball America (No. 9) and MLB.com (No. 7). The left-hander made 11 starts between Portland (9) and Worcester (2) in 2022, posting a 3.59 ERA (23 ER/57.2 IP), 0.90 WHIP, and 11.71 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, as he struck out 75 batters and walked only seven. A Delaware native, Walter was selected by Boston in the 26th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Delaware.

Rafaela, 22, is ranked among the Red Sox’ top five prospects by both Baseball America (No. 4) and MLB.com (No. 3). Named 2022 Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America, the right-handed hitter batted .299 with an .880 OPS, 32 doubles, 10 triples, 21 home runs, and 28 stolen bases in 116 games between High-A Greenville (45 games) and Portland (71). Rafaela started 91 games in center field, 20 at shortstop, three at designated hitter, and one at second base, earning his second consecutive Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Year award from the organization. The Curacao native was signed by Boston as an international free agent on July 2, 2017.

Abreu, 23, is ranked by Baseball America as the Red Sox’ No. 22 prospect. The left-handed hitter batted .247 (113-for-457) with 106 runs scored, 29 doubles, 19 home runs, and 31 stolen bases in 129 Double-A games between Corpus Christi (89 games) and Portland (40) in 2022, starting 56 games in center field, 38 in left field, and 26 in right field. A native of Maracaibo, Venezuela, he was acquired from the Houston Astros on August 1 along with Enmanuel Valdez in exchange for catcher Christian Vázquez.

David Hamilton, 25, was named the 2022 Red Sox Minor League Baserunner of the Year after leading Double-A and setting a new franchise record for Portland with 70 stolen bases in 78 attempts. The left-handed hitter batted .251 (116-for-463) with 16 doubles, nine triples, and 12 home runs in 119 games with the Sea Dogs. A native of San Marcos, Texas, Hamilton was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers along with outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and minor league infielder Alex Binelas in exchange for outfielder Hunter Renfroe in December 2021.

Reed, 30, was claimed off waivers by Boston from the Baltimore Orioles on October 13. The right-hander made 18 relief appearances for the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Baltimore during 2022, posting a 7.02 ERA (13 ER/16.2 IP). He also recorded a 3.09 ERA (8 ER/23.1 IP) in 20 minor league outings (one start) with 26 strikeouts, eight walks, and only one home run allowed.

Caleb Hamilton, 27, was claimed off waivers by Boston from the Minnesota Twins on October 11. He made his Major League debut with Minnesota in 2022, playing in 22 games while making three starts at catcher and one at first base. The right-handed hitter spent the majority of this season with Triple-A St. Paul, batting .233 (48-for-206) with 10 doubles, 11 home runs, and 43 RBI in 62 games.

Yankees re-sign INF Anthony Rizzo

The New York Yankees today announced that they have re-signed INF Anthony Rizzo to a two-year Major League contract extending through the 2024 season with a club option for the 2025 season.

Rizzo, 33, hit .224/.338/.480 (104-for-465) with 77R, 21 doubles, 1 triple, 32HR, 75RBI, 58BB, 23HP and 6SB in 130 games with the Yankees in 2022. His 32 home runs matched his career high (also 2014,’16 and ‘17) and were tied for the seventh-most in the American League. Over parts of two seasons with the Yankees (2021-22), he has posted a .230 (147-for-638) batting average with 109R, 28 doubles, 1 triple, 40HR, 96RBI, 74BB, 32HP and 8SB in 179 total games.

In 12 Major League seasons with the San Diego Padres (2011), Chicago Cubs (2012-21) and New York Yankees (2021-22), Rizzo has a .265 (1,476-for-5,578) batting average with 839R, 312 doubles, 22 triples, 283HR, 889RBI and 719BB in 1,536 career games. A three-time NL All-Star (2014-16), he has hit at least 20 home runs nine times in his career (2013-19, ’21-22) and is the only player since 2013 to hit at least 20 home runs in nine seasons. Additionally, he is one of nine Major League players to record at least five 30-homer seasons since 2014, joining Nolan Arenado (seven), Nelson Cruz (seven), Edwin Encarnacion (six), Paul Goldschmidt (six), Manny Machado (six), Mike Trout (six), José Abreu (five) and Giancarlo Stanton (five).

Rizzo finished in the top four in NL MVP voting twice (fourth in 2015 and fourth in 2016) and was a member of the 2016 World Series champion Chicago Cubs. The first baseman is a four-time Gold Glove Award winner (2016, ’18-20) and was named the 2016 NL Platinum Glove winner. Since 2011, his .995 fielding percentage at first base is the sixth-best at the position (min. 650 games).

Additionally, Rizzo was honored with the 2017 Roberto Clemente Award, annually given to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

He was originally acquired by the Yankees along with cash considerations from the Cubs on July 29, 2021, in exchange for minor league RHP Alexander Vizcaíno and OF Kevin Alcántara. Rizzo then re-signed with the Yankees on March 17, 2022, signing a two-year Major League contract extending through the 2023 season with a player opt-out following 2022. He exercised that opt-out on November 9, 2022.

Originally selected by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Rizzo was traded along with RHP Casey Kelly, OF Reymond Fuentes and INF Eric Patterson to the San Diego Padres for INF Adrián González on December 5, 2010. The left-handed hitter was then acquired by Chicago-NL along with RHP Zach Cates from San Diego in exchange for RHP Andrew Cashner and OF Kyung-Min Na on January 6, 2012. On May 13, 2013, Rizzo signed a seven-year contract through 2019 with the Cubs which included club options for 2020 and 2021.
