NBA Preview: Minnesota Timberwolves at Orlando Magic

0

After a dismal start to the season, the Orlando Magic have come alive on their current seven-game homestand and hope to finish that stretch strong Wednesday night when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Orlando saw its first, albeit modest, winning streak of the season end at two games on Monday in a 112-105 loss to Charlotte.

The Magic had ticked a game above .500 for the homestand with back-to-back victories over Dallas and Phoenix — in both cases holding the competition to less than 100 points.

However, the Orlando offense sputtered to 36-of-88 shooting and committed 22 turnovers Monday. The Magic rank at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with an average of 17 turnovers a game.

Orlando will look to regroup offensively against a Minnesota defense that has struggled this season. The Timberwolves are surrendering an average of more than 116 points per game to rank in the league’s bottom third.

With a win, the Magic would close the homestand at 4-3. Mosley said finishing with a winning record during this stretch could be a significant step for a team that started the season 1-7 and was last in the Eastern Conference.

Orlando will look for that pivotal win with some roster uncertainty. Leading scorer and rookie sensation Paolo Banchero missed Monday’s loss with an ankle injury and didn’t practice Tuesday. He is listed as day-to-day.

The Magic opened the season with a rash of injuries that have delayed the debuts of assorted would-be contributors, including Cole Anthony, Markelle Fultz and Jonathan Isaac.

Minnesota, meanwhile, snapped a three-game skid its last time out, weathering 51 points by Cleveland’s Darius Garland to down the Cavs 129-124.

The win moved the Timberwolves to 1-1 early in a tough road swing that includes four consecutive road games and six of seven away from home. Orlando will mark the third in that stretch.

Minnesota stormed to a 25-point lead against the Cavaliers but had to hold off a late rally that narrowed the deficit to as few as two points.

Sunday’s win at Cleveland also marked an offensive resurgence for D’Angelo Russell, who finished with season highs in points (30) and assists (11). Russell has endured scoring struggles this season, shooting a career-low 32.9 percent from 3-point range.

NBA Preview: Indiana Pacers at Charlotte Hornets

0

Finally emerging from a long losing streak, the Charlotte Hornets will host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night hoping to get rolling in the right direction.

The Hornets returned from three games in Florida with their first victory in November to snap an eight-game losing streak, their longest skid since 2019 and one shy of a wrong-way stretch of November 2014.

That’s among the positive aspects they’ll take into the game with Indiana. It will be the home debut for point guard LaMelo Ball, something that’s bound to bring a buzz to the arena.

Ball has played the past two games after missing the first 13 following a preseason ankle injury. His presence in Monday night’s 112-105 victory at Orlando was notable — he had 17 points and nine assists — and at least partly accounted for the Hornets putting seven players in double-figure scoring.

The Hornets have to recognize what worked and aim to repeat parts of that, Clifford said.

The Pacers have won five of their past seven games. They’re hitting the road after a 3-1 homestand, but they haven’t played since defeating the Toronto Raptors on Saturday.

Buddy Hield led Indiana with 22 points in the 118-104 win over the Raptors, and backcourt mate Tyrese Haliburton had 15 assists, giving him double-digit assists in eight of the team’s 12 games.

It has helped to have Myles Turner excelling in the post for Indiana. He’s averaging 21.5 points and 10 rebounds in four November games.

For the Hornets, defensive breakdowns have been a problem, as they cope with unfamiliar combinations on the court. So there’s the notion that stressing personal responsibility might help.

It’s also a matter of doing more on the boards to finish possessions on defense. Orlando pulled in 22 offensive rebounds in Monday night’s game.

Ornelas, 22, enjoyed a breakout campaign this season, batting .299 (157-525) with a career-high 14 home runs, 64 RBI, and 14 stolen bases over 123 games with Double-A Frisco. His 157 hits led the Texas League by a wide margin (next: 141) and tied the RoughRiders franchise record for a single season. The organization’s 2022 Defender of the Year, Ornelas is currently ranked as the Rangers’ 21st-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

The 23-year-old White combined to go 9-2 with a 3.59 ERA (32 ER/80.1 IP) and 104 strikeouts over 15 games/14 starts between High-A Hickory and Double-A Frisco in 2022. A second round selection by Texas in the 2018 MLB Draft, White was touted as the no. 5 overall prospect in the Rangers’ farm system in mid-season rankings published by Baseball America.

Winn, who turns 25 years old on Nov. 25, went 9-8 with a 6.51 ERA (88 ER/121.2 IP) over 28 starts with Triple-A Round Rock this season.
