Additionally, Nico Hischier and Jonas Siegenthaler entail a +13 rating since Oct. 25, which is tied with H. Lindholm for second in the NHL dating to the time. Overall, for the 2022-23 campaign (Per, Nov. 16), Seigenthaler (+16), Hischier (+13) and Tatar (+13) rank second, third and fourth in the NHL for plus/minus rating, respectively. Dougie Hamilton extended his point streak to five games (3g-4a), after earning his fourth multi-point effort (1g-1a) on Tuesday. The five-game point streak marked the 6-foot-6 blueliner’s longest point streak since joining the Devils last season, while his prior season-high with Jersey was a four-game point streak earned via Oct. 23, 2021, to Oct.31 (1g-4a). Keep in mind that Hamilton’s shooting% is 20% (15 SOG) since his five-game point streak started on Nov. 5, at Calgary. Since that time, three other Devils skaters entail a higher shooting% than Hamilton:

Hamilton’s shooting percentage since Nov. 5, 2022, leads all NHL defensemen who’ve played in at least five games and recorded 10-or-more shots over that time frame. Additionally, Hamilton earned his second game-winning goal for the season, which is tied for second on the team with Dawson Mercer and Jesper Bratt. Hischier’s three game-winning goals lead the Devils for the 2022-23 campaign. Only San Jose’s Erik Karlsson entails more game-winning goals (3) for NHL defensemen this season than Hamilton, while N. Dobson, A. Fox and B. Montour also have two game-winners for the 2022-23 campaign.

QUICK HITS
Dawson Mercer is fresh off his first multi-point effort for the season (0g-2a) and is two games away from playing in his 100th career NHL contest. Mercer played in all 82 games last season, and owns the fifth longest consecutive games played streak to start an NHL career in franchise history:

Erik Haula & Michael McLeod rank in the top 10 for face-off% in the NHL. Per Nov. 16, McLeod and Haula were tied for seventh in the NHL in face-off% at 60.5%.
As of Nov. 16, Haula ranked third in the NHL for face-off% on the road at 64.8, while Chicago’s J. Toews ranked first at 67.2%.
Fabian Zetterlund’s 30 shots on goal rank (tied, N. Lundkvist) second for all NHL rookies behind Ottawa’s S.

Pinto’s 31 SOG.
Zetterlund has taken seven slap shots this season, which ranks second on the Devils behind Hamilton’s eight clappers. Nico Hischier enters his third season as team captain. Damon Severson is the longest-tenured Devil via 2014-15. Dawson Mercer is the first player in franchise history to wear No. 91. Mercer donned No. 18 last season, which was taken over by two-time Stanley Cup champion Ondrej Palat.

COACH’S CORNER
Head coach Lindy Ruff earned his 783rd career regular-season win on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022, and now ranks fifth all-time for NHL head coaches. Ruff was tied with the great Al Arbour for fifth all-time at 782. Vitek Vanecek won his seventh consecutive “decision” after Tuesday’s win, but is not credited with a seven-game winning streak since he logged a “no decision” after the Czech-born netminder was removed from the team’s game in the third period on Nov. 10, vs Ottawa.

Vanecek’s career-high winning streak remains at six games, which was earned twice in his NHL career. The last Devils netminders who won seven consecutive decisions were both Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg in 2010-11.

TONIGHT’S PLAYER TO WATCHS PLAYER TO WATCH
Erik Haula is one of three Devils this season who haven’t earned a goal, yet (K. Bahl & B. Smith). However, Haula and Smith are the only players that played in all of Jersey’s 16 games for 2022-23 but haven’t found the back of the net. Haula’s been snake bitten and viewers can expect No. 56 to ink his name in the goal column sooner rather than later.

NICE TO SEE YOU, NOVEMBER
The Blue Jackets have picked up points in three-straight games following a 5-4 overtime victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. That game kicked off a season-high six-game homestand for the club with games from November 15-25. It’s part of a stretch of eight-of-10 games played at Nationwide Arena from November 10-28. Tuesday’s game also concluded a stretch of three-straight games against Metropolitan Division foes (2-0-1). The club plays five consecutive contests against Atlantic Division teams from November 17-25, including twice against the Canadiens on Nov. 17 and 23.

TWO DIFFERENT STRETCHES
Nine of the club’s first 12 games were competed against teams that made the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including facing off against the Stanley Cup champion Avalanche twice and Stanley Cup finalist once (Tampa Bay Lightning). Four of the next five games will be played against teams that failed to make the postseason.

THE COMEBACK BLUE JACKETS
Columbus earned victories when trailing by multiple goals in back-to-back wins over Vancouver (2-0) on Oct. 18 and Nashville (2-0 and 3-1) on Oct. 20. It was the fifth time in franchise history that the team has earned consecutive multi-goal comeback wins (MR: Feb. 8-10, 2022). These victories have a familiar feeling to the club’s wins in 2021-22 when CBJ set a franchise record after coming back at some point in the game in 23 of their 37 wins. The club finished sixth in the NHL in comeback victories last season. The team also trailed only Florida (11) with nine come-from-behind victories when trailing heading into the third period.

FROM THE BLUELINE
CBJ blueliners have recorded 1-2-3 in each of the last two games, 7-12-19 in the last nine outings and 11-18-29 in 15 games this season, ranking fourth-T in the NHL in goals. Defenseman Jake Bean recorded his second multi-assist game of the campaign on Saturday with two assists and leads the club’s blueliners in assists (tied) and ranks second in points with 1-5-6 in 14 games. Vladislav Gavrikov notched his second career overtime winner and fifth career game-winning goal on Tuesday, finishing with 1-1-2, while also skating in a career-high 28:40 TOI (previous 28:20 on Apr. 22, 2022 vs. OTT). He became the fifth different defenseman in NHL history to score each of his first two or more goals of a season in overtime and is also one off the franchise record for overtime goals by a defenseman in a single season (3; Seth Jones, 2016-17 & 2018-19).

ROOKIE REPORT
The club’s rookies, currently consisting of forwards Liam Foudy and Kent Johnson along with defensemen Nick Blankenburg, Marcus Bjork and Jake Christiansen have had a strong start to the season, combining for 6-9-15 in 15 games. ANDREI 300
Andrei Svechnikov is set to play his 300th career NHL/Hurricanes game against the Avalanche on Thursday. He would become the 28th player drafted by Hartford/Carolina to skate in at least 300 games with the franchise, and just the 14th former Hurricanes draft pick to reach the milestone with the team. Selected second overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, Svechnikov would also become the first player from his draft class to play 300 games. He scored his 100th career goal just two games ago (11/10 vs. EDM: 3g), pacing his draft class to that plateau as well. Svechnikov looks to join Jordan Staal (677 GP), Jaccob Slavin (524 GP), Brett Pesce (491 GP), Sebastian Aho (461 GP) and Teuvo Teravainen (425 GP) as the sixth active Hurricanes player to log 300 career games with the team. He has registered 227 points (101g, 126a) in his NHL/Hurricanes career and ranks ninth in goals, tied for ninth in assists, eighth in points and tied for sixth in game-winning goals (15) among all players in franchise history through their first 300 career games.

BETTER CALL STAAL
Jordan Staal earned two points (1g, 1a) at CHI (11/14), extending his goal/point streak to three games (11/10-11/14: 3g, 1a). He has now posted more goals and points over the last three games than in his first 13 contests of the season, as he was held to just three points (1g, 2a) from 10/12-11/9. Staal’s three-game goal streak is the longest of any Hurricanes player in 2022-23 and marks his longest such streak since 2020-21, when he scored in four consecutive games from 2/11-2/17 (5g, 1a). His goal on Monday also marked the 370th point (142g, 228a) of his Hurricanes career, passing Geoff Sanderson (1991-97: 196-173—369) for the 10th-highest scoring output by any player in franchise history.

CHEMISTRY 101
For the third consecutive game, Jesper Fast (1a), Jordan Martinook (1g, 1a) and Jordan Staal (1g, 1a) each found the scoresheet at CHI (11/14). Fast (1g, 3a), Martinook (2g, 3a) and Staal (3g, 1a) have now combined for 13 points (6g, 7a) over Carolina’s last three games (11/10-11/14) after posting nine total points (4g, 5a) in 13 games to start the season, including five scoreless contests just before this stretch (10/31-11/9). Martinook’s streak is the sixth three-game point streak of his NHL career, tied for his career long (last: 4/24/22- 4/2822: 2g, 1a), while Fast’s is one game shy of tying his season-long from 2021-22 (4/18-4/24: 2g, 2a).

ETCH-A-SVECH
After scoring his second hat trick of the season vs. EDM (11/10), Andrei Svechnikov scored the Hurricanes’ third goal at CHI (11/14). He has now tallied nine points in his last eight games (10/31-11/14: 5g, 4a) and leads the team in both goals and points over that span. Svechnikov has earned 18 points (12g, 6a) through 16 games in 2022-23 and ranks tied for third in the NHL in goals behind only Connor McDavid (EDM, 15) and Bo Horvat (VAN, 14). He trails only Martin Necas (7-12—19) for the team lead in points, and his seven points (3g, 4a) on the man-advantage also rank tied with Brent Burns (1g, 6a) for the team lead.

FEEL THE BURN
Brent Burns earned two assists against the Blackhawks on Monday, marking his second multi-assist/point game in 2022-23. He has now posted 173 multi-point games and 92 multi-assist games in his NHL career and ranks first and third in those categories, respectively, among all active NHL blueliners. Burns has registered 12 points (3g, 9a) in 16 games this season and ranks third on the team in assists. Burns has tallied a team-high six assists on the man-advantage and now ranks tied for third among all NHL defensemen in both powerplay assists and power-play Points (7).

Brent Burns (SJS/Carolina): 173
Erik Karlsson (OTT/SJS): 166
Kris Letang (PIT): 150
Victor Hedman (TBL): 139
John Carlson (WSH): 137

KOOCHIE GANG
Pyotr Kochetkov stopped all 27 shots he faced at CHI (11/14) to record his first career NHL/Hurricanes shutout. He required the fewest games of any goaltender in franchise history to post his first career shutout, besting the 10 games needed by Alex Nedeljkovic (2017- 21). With the win, Kochetkov also improved to 5-0-0 in his NHL regular-season career, becoming the first goaltender in franchise history and just the 12th netminder in NHL history to win each of his first five career regular-season appearances. Only eight goalies have ever extended their career-opening win streak to six games: Frank McCool (TOR, 1944), Ken Dryden (MTL, 1971), Wayne Thomas (MTL, 1973), Bob Froese (PHI, 1983), Damian Rhodes (TOR, 1991-93), Martin Jones (LAK, 2013), Frederik Andersen (ANA, 2013) and Spencer Knight (FLA, 2021).

GIVE AND TAKE
Jaccob Slavin tallied his third assist of the season vs. EDM (11/10) and has now recorded 211 points (36g, 175a) in his NHL/Hurricanes career. He needs just one more assist to tie Glen Wesley (1994-08: 176) for the second-most assists by any defenseman in franchise history. Slavin also has registered two takeaways at CHI (11/14), and he has now posted two or more in 10 of 16 games this season. Slavin’s 29 takeaways in 2022-23 are 13 more than any other Hurricanes skater (Brady Skjei: 16). He has led the Hurricanes in takeaways in five of his seven previous NHL seasons, and since he entered the league in 2015-16, he paces all NHL defensemen in that category (508).

Most assists by a defenseman, franchise history (1979-present):
Dave Babych (1985-91): 196
Glen Wesley (1994-08): 176

Justin Faulk (2011-19): 173
Mark Howe (1979-82): 147

Brent Burns (SJS/Carolina): 430
Erik Karlsson (OTT/SJS): 390
Alex Pietrangelo (STL/VGK): 372
Kris Letang (PIT): 318

CASE IN POINTS
With Monday’s win over the Blackhawks, the Hurricanes have registered a 10-5-1 record to start the season, marking the fifth-highest points percentage (.656) of any NHL team and the second-highest of any Metropolitan Division team (NJD: 13-3-0, .813) in 2022-23. TONIGHT’S GAME: The Stars wrap up their three-game road trip on Thursday evening against the Florida Panthers at FLA Live Arena (6 p.m. CT, TV: Bally Sports Southwest, Radio: The Ticket 96.7-FM/1310-AM). This is one of two games against the Panthers and the only visit to Sunrise during the regular season. These clubs will meet once more Jan. 8, 2023 at American Airlines Center. Following tonight’s contest, the Stars will return to Big D to open a four-game homestand beginning Saturday when they host the New York Islanders on Hockey Fights Cancer Night at American Airlines Center.

DRESSED TO KILL

  • The Stars enter Thursday’s game with the third-best penalty killing percentage in the NHL (84.9%) and co-lead the NHL with four shorthanded goals in the 2022-23 season (also Vegas and Chicago).
  • Despite leading the league in total shorthanded time on ice (110:48), the Stars have given up the sixth-fewest goals while on the PK (10).
  • It took just 16 games for the Stars to score their fourth shorthanded goal this season. In comparison, it took them 50 games in 2021-22 to reach that mark, 42 GP in 2019-20 and 33 GP in 2018-19. (Dallas has three shorthanded goals in a shortened 56-game 2020-21 campaign).
  • The Stars are 3-0-1 (7 points) in games in which they’ve recorded a shorthanded goal (Oct. 15 vs. Nashville, Oct. 27 vs. Washington, Nov. 13 at Philadelphia and Nov. 15 at Tampa Bay).

IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME, VERY LONG TIME SINCE I’VE HEARD YOUR VOICE

NHL Morning Skate – Nov. 17, 2022

0

* The Blues celebrated their fourth straight win as they were cheered on by their mothers, who have accompanied the team during its last two victories as part of their moms’ trip.

Trevor Moore scored his first career hat trick to help the Kings inch closer to top spot in the Western Conference.

* Ottawa continued its scoring ways at Canadian Tire Centre and overtook the League lead for most home goals as the club earned a win on its Hockey Fights Cancer Night.

* Thursday’s slate is set to feature several streaks on the line as well as milestone games for head coach John Tortorella and the NHL’s new “Ironman” Phil Kessel.

BLUES BANK FIVE, STRETCH WINNING STREAK TO 4-0-0
The Blues scored five goals to extend their winning streak to four games, tying the Bruins for the second-longest active run among all teams, as the club continues to flip the script after starting the season 3-8-0. Five of St. Louis’ seven wins have come on the road – only three teams have more: Vegas (8), Carolina (6) and New Jersey (6).

Calle Rosen (1-0—1), who opened the scoring after his mother predicted he would, and Nick Leddy (0-1—1) factored on two of the five Blues goals as St. Louis now has a points percentage by defensemen of 27.4% – only three teams have a better percentage: San Jose (31.4%), Colorado (30.5%) and Winnipeg (28%).

MOORE SCORES FIRST CAREER HAT TRICK AS KINGS SILENCE OILERS
Thousand Oaks, Calif., native Trevor Moore (3-0—3) scored all three of Los Angeles’ goals to record his first career hat trick and help the Kings (11-7-1, 23 points) move within three points of the idle Golden Knights for first place in the Western Conference. Los Angeles is 5-1-0 over its past six games dating to Nov. 5, tied with New Jersey (5-0-0) for the most wins in the NHL over that span.

* The Kings held both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl off the scoresheet for the fifth time (regular season and playoffs combined) – only the Flames (9) have done so more. In doing so, Los Angeles halted the duo’s point streaks at 10 and 11 games, respectively – Draisaitl’s 11-game run was tied for the longest in the League this season.

SANDERSON HELPS SENATORS EARN WIN ON HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER NIGHT
Jake Sanderson (0-2—2) factored on two of his club’s four goals Wednesday as the Senators boosted their NHL-leading home totals to 39 to earn a win on Hockey Fights Cancer Night at Canadian Tire Centre. Ottawa, which is averaging 3.90 goals per game at home this season, has finished a campaign with a better scoring pace just once in franchise history (2005-06: 3.98 G/PG).

* Sandersonoutdueled fellow first-year blueliner Owen Power with a multi-assist outing to boost his season totals to 0-9—9 (16 GP), surpassing Power (0-8—8 in 17 GP) and Minnesota’s Calen Addison (0-8—8 in 16 GP) for the League lead in points among rookie defensemen. Both Sanderson and Shane Pinto (8-1—9 in 16 GP) are now within one point of Arizona’s Matias Maccelli (1-9—10 in 15 GP) atop the overall rookie points race.

ICYMI: While it was Ottawa’s turn to host a Hockey Fights Cancer Night, Buffalo recently did so Nov. 12, where they had Melissa Vargo – now a cancer survivor – participate in a ceremonial puck drop. Vargo has since sat down with NHL.com to talk about her next steps, which includes an Instagram page with everything from tips to help patients after their diagnosis, to useful products they can seek out, to inserting a little bit of humor into the process.

A total of 26 teams are in action Thursday, including the League-leading Bruins (14-2-0, 28 points) who can improve to 10-0-0 at TD Garden this season and the Metropolitan Division-leading Devils (13-3-0, 26 points) who look to extend their winning streak to 11 games. Boston can become the fifth team in NHL history with a season-opening home winning streak of 10 or more contests, while New Jersey can earn victories in 11 straight games for the third time in franchise history.

Some other notable storylines to look out for:

John Tortorella is set to serve his 1,400th career game as an NHL head coach when the Flyers (7-6-3, 17 points) look to become the first team to defeat the Bruins at TD Garden this season. Tortorella, who was born in Boston, will become the first U.S.-born head coach in League history to reach the milestone.

Mitchell Marner (3-11—14 in 10 GP) can extend his point streak to 11 games as the Maple Leafs (9-5-3, 21 points) aim to hand the Devils their first loss since Oct. 24 and their first road defeat since Oct. 13. Marner’s career high for longest point streak is 13 contests, achieved from March 15 to April 9, 2022 (8-20—28 in 13 GP).

Jason Robertson (9-9—18 in 9 GP) and Roope Hintz (4-9—13 in 9 GP) look to push their point streaks to double digits as the Central Division-leading Stars (9-5-2, 20 points) visit the Panthers (9-6-1, 19 points) at FLA Live Arena. Dallas owns a one-point edge over Winnipeg (9-4-1, 19 points), which occupies second place in the Central Division and hosts Anaheim (5-10-1, 11 points) on Thursday.

Phil Kessel is set to become the first player in NHL history to skate in 1,000 consecutive games as the Western Conference-leading Golden Knights (13-4-0, 26 points) host the Coyotes (6-8-1, 13 points). Kessel appeared in 208 contests with Arizona from 2019-20 to 2021-22.

Clayton Keller (5-9—14 in 10 GP) can become the second player in Coyotes team history (since 1996-97) with a road point streak of 11 or more games. He would join Ray Whitney, who did so from Feb. 16 to April 7, 2012 (5-11—16 in 12 GP).

NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles Clippers

Pistons pay visit to Clippers to start Western swing

Off to the worst start in the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons now head West and likely will be without space-eating big man Isaiah Stewart for the length of a six-game road trip.

That trip starts Thursday with a meeting against the Los Angeles Clippers, who are struggling with key injuries and have been unable to get on track this season. Kawhi Leonard has missed all but two games with lingering issues from knee surgery a year and a half ago.

Stewart was on the court as recently as Monday against the Toronto Raptors, although he played just 13 minutes before leaving with a sprained right big toe. He is expected to miss two-to-three weeks.

A former No. 16 overall draft pick in 2020, Stewart was off to a solid start in his third season for the Pistons with 12 points per game to go along with 9.3 rebounds in 27.1 minutes.

Detroit head coach Dwane Casey inserted Marvin Bagley III into the starting lineup Monday to play alongside Stewart and give the Pistons a double big-man look. Saddiq Bey was moved to the second team in the hope of giving Detroit more overall continuity.

The plan did not have immediate success as Stewart’s injury and a 115-111 defeat to the Raptors gave the Pistons their fourth consecutive loss, while the team dropped its seventh game in the last eight tries.

Aside from the loss of Stewart, going 31 of 43 from the free-throw line also spelled doom for Detroit.

The Pistons are now more than two weeks removed from a promising 128-114 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 30 that has been reduced to a mere anomaly.

The Clippers enter off a disappointing 103-101 defeat on the road to the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. Paul George had 23 points for Los Angeles and helped the team recover from a 25-point deficit, but Luka Doncic decided it on a 3-pointer with 27.8 seconds remaining.

The Clippers’ Nicolas Batum went 7 of 7 from 3-point range off the bench to become the first player in franchise history to go perfect from distance with at least seven attempts. But his 22 points could not help make up the difference against the Mavs.

Luke Kennard typically is the Clippers’ sharpshooter from distance, but he left Tuesday’s game early in the first quarter with a strained right calf, playing just three minutes.

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Sacramento Kings

Following historic showing, Kings welcome Spurs to town

Two Western Conference teams headed in opposite directions at a rather rapid rate collide for the first time this season when the San Antonio Spurs visit the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night.

Rebounding from an 0-4 start, the Kings have won seven of their last nine games, including four in a row.

Meanwhile, the Spurs opened 5-2, but have since lost seven of eight.

Sacramento is coming off one of the season’s most eye-catching results, a 153-121 home demolition of the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night. Terence Davis exploded for 31 points in the win.

Making 60 percent of their shots and 20 3-pointers, the Kings ran up the season’s highest point total and matching the fourth biggest in franchise history.

The Kings have won four in a row at home, disappointing a rather impressive list of recent visitors — the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors before the Nets.

Depth has been a key. Seven different players have averaged double-figure points during the winning streak, led by Domantas Sabonis (21.3) and De’Aaron Fox (20.8). Meanwhile, Kevin Huerter (15-for-27, 55.6 percent) and Davis (10-for-17, 58.8 percent) have led a barrage from 3-point range.

The Kings will be seeing a Spurs team that has been surprisingly weak on defense. San Antonio has allowed 124 or more points on eight different occasions already this season, including 132 in a 37-point shellacking at Golden State on Monday.

The Spurs were much more competitive on the second night of a back-to-back Tuesday at Portland, hanging within 113-110 with less than two minutes remaining before missing their last three shots in a seven-point defeat.

The loss came despite a career night from center Jakob Poeltl, who hit 14 of his 17 shots en route to 31 points. He also found time for 14 rebounds.

The Kings won the season series over the Spurs last year, prevailing in two of three contests between the teams, including a 121-114 home victory that was powered by 56 points from Buddy Hield and Tyrese Haliburton, who are both no longer with Sacramento.

They were dealt to the Indiana Pacers last February for Sabonis, who has recorded eight double-doubles this season, including one with 26 points and 22 rebounds in Sunday’s win over Golden State.

Sabonis has put up five consecutive double-doubles against the Spurs, including contributing 12 points and 12 rebounds to a 115-112 triumph at San Antonio in March in his first visit after joining the Kings.
