NBA Preview: Indiana Pacers at Houston Rockets

0

If there is a short list of surprising teams through the first month of this NBA season, the Indiana Pacers are certainly near the top.

Widely considered lottery fodder prior to the season, the Pacers recorded their sixth win in eight games on Wednesday by dispatching the Charlotte Hornets 125-113 on the road.

The Pacers will complete their brief two-game road trip in Houston against the Rockets on Friday before heading back to Indianapolis to start a four-game homestand on Saturday.

As has been the case throughout their run of strong performances, the Pacers were buoyed by youthful guards Tyrese Haliburton (22 points and 11 assists) and Bennedict Mathurin (20 points off the bench) while Myles Turner (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Buddy Hield (19 points) lent support.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Haliburton and Hield were acquired last season from the Sacramento Kings, with Hield and Turner components of offseason trade speculation. Mathurin has been a pleasant surprise as arguably the second-best rookie thus far, and almost everything has clicked for the Pacers despite expectations that they would struggle.

Having showcased a penchant for competitive play through the opening three periods of games only to routinely collapse down the stretch of the fourth quarter, the Rockets on Wednesday finally showed the mettle and maturity to close out an opponent, doing so on the road in Dallas.

Houston trailed 83-81 with 8:38 remaining before outscoring the Mavericks 20-9 en route to a 101-92 victory. The Rockets responded to a Christian Wood alley-oop dunk with a 9-0 spurt and, surprisingly, finished off the Mavericks on the defensive end by limiting Dallas to 21.4 percent shooting in the final period. The Mavericks missed 16 of 17 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

The Rockets recorded five of their NBA season-high 19 blocked shots in the fourth and made 8 of 9 free throws in the period. In a game that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes, it was the Rockets who had the answers late, a dramatic reversal for a team that would usually fall short.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic at Chicago Bulls

0

Either Chicago or Orlando will snap a short losing skid while extending the other’s swoon when the Bulls host the Magic on Friday.

Chicago dropped its third straight with a 124-110 decision Wednesday at New Orleans. Despite 11-of-15 shooting and 28 points from DeMar DeRozan, the Bulls could not overcome giving up a torrid 17-of-33 shooting from 3-point range to the Pelicans.

The Bulls rank among the NBA’s worst defenses in opponent 3-point percentage through their first 15 games. The competition is connecting on 38.3 percent of its attempts collectively from beyond the arc.

On Wednesday, it was central to a loss that continued the defensive woes for the Bulls.

Chicago gave up 250 combined points in its past two contests, and has surrendered 121.7 points per game amid its losing streak — nearly 10 points per game more than the Bulls’ collective season yield of 111.8.

Chicago will look to regroup on Friday against an Orlando team experiencing its own offensive struggles, particularly shooting from deep. The Magic average 10.2 3-point shot points per game, one of the league’s lowest outputs, and rank in the bottom-third of 3-point percentage at 33.6.

Offensive struggles plagued the Magic on Wednesday as they dropped their second consecutive decision, but their 45.2 percent shooting from the floor — including 9-of-35 from 3-point range — was less of an issue than 16 turnovers in the 126-108 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Fifteen of those were Minnesota steals, which contributed to the Timberwolves’ dominant 30-9 advantage on fastbreak points.

The Magic will be without rookie standout Paolo Banchero (ankle) for the fifth straight game. Banchero is Orlando’s leading scorer at 23.5 points per game in 11 games played.

Wendell Carter Jr. is probable ahead of Friday’s contest, the result of a foot injury. Their absences compound a variety of personnel concerns the Magic have faced since the outset of the season.

Cole Anthony hasn’t played since Oct. 26 with an oblique injury and has no definitive timetable for a return. Jonathan Isaac and Markelle Fultz have yet to play this season.

NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks at Philadelphia Sixers

0

After one of the most dominating performances in quite some time, the Philadelphia 76ers spent much of the week focusing on defense.

Joel Embiid recorded 59 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and seven blocked shots in a 105-98 win over the Utah Jazz last Sunday.

In a scheduling quirk, the Sixers had four days off before hosting the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.

Playing without James Harden (foot), the Sixers have lacked consistency on both ends of the floor in a 7-7 start this season.

Perhaps lost in Embiid’s mind-boggling offensive numbers was that the Sixers looked much more in sync against the Jazz.

Embiid said he remained focused on the team’s defensive responsibilities.

The Bucks arrive in Philadelphia following a commanding 113-96 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.

Brook Lopez hit seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points, Jordan Nwora added a season-best 21 points and Giannis Antetokounmpo collected 16 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists.

The Bucks’ depth has been vital since they’ve been besieged by injuries. Khris Middleton (wrist), Pat Connaughton (calf) and Joe Ingles (knee) have yet to play this season.

Milwaukee also defeated Cleveland without Jrue Holiday (right ankle), Grayson Allen (right ankle) and Wesley Matthews (hamstring).

Connaughton was listed as probable against the Cavaliers and appears close to returning.

NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets at Cleveland Cavaliers

0

It is hard to determine if the Charlotte Hornets or Cleveland Cavaliers are in more desperate shape for as they prepare to meet Friday night.

The Hornets have won just one of their past 10 games and one of their star players will be out again.

Cleveland, beginning a four-game homestand, is mired in a five-game losing streak.

For Charlotte, point guard LaMelo Ball was in his first home game of the season Wednesday night as the Hornets were enduring another late-game collapse. He landed on a fan’s foot with 1 minute, 34 seconds left in the 125-113 loss to the Indiana Pacers.

He rolled the same ankle that forced him to miss the first 13 games of the season and has been ruled out of the Cavaliers game.

Cleveland has issues that surfaced in a 113-98 road loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. The Cavaliers’ skid has come after an eight-game winning streak.

The game against Charlotte will be just the second home outing for the Cavaliers in more than two weeks. They will play four home games across six nights, but even a more welcoming setting won’t be an automatic solution for the Cavaliers.

Bickerstaff has hinted at lineup changes or role adjustments.

And Charlotte, again, is left without Ball, at least for now. He racked up 26 points Wednesday night before exiting with the injury.

Ball seemed to get the Hornets going in the right direction from an offensive standpoint. That alone wasn’t putting Charlotte back on track.

So facing the Cavaliers next could be a blessing for the Hornets. Cleveland was stuck with a season-low point total in the Milwaukee game — the first time the Cavaliers failed to reach 100 points this season. That also was the first time the Cavaliers suffered a loss by more than seven points this season.

Cleveland forward Kevin Love reached a notable mark by moving to third place on the Cavaliers franchise’s all-time list for defensive rebounds by snatching his 3,569th board. Love has been coming off the bench, averaging 21.9 minutes, 11.6 points and 7.3 rebounds in eight games this month.

The Cavaliers have additional woes with the announcement that Dylan Windler, who has yet to play this season because of a sprained right ankle, will be out at least another month. He had a platelet-rich plasma injection and was put in a walking cast.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat at Washington Wizards

0

The Washington Wizards nearly extended their season-high winning streak to five games before seeing a pair of double-digit leads evaporate and a last-second shot do them in.

The Wizards look to pick up the pieces on Friday night when they host the Miami Heat.

Kristaps Porzingis scored 20 of his team-high 27 points in the first half of Washington’s 121-120 setback to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.

The Wizards saw 17- and 16-point leads disappear before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander capped a 42-point performance by draining a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining.

The Wizards’ Bradley Beal was poised to play the hero after sinking a go-ahead jumper with 6.7 seconds to play.

Beal collected 25 points, six rebounds and six assists in his return from a five-game absence, three due to health and safety protocol and two to rest. Beal logged 37 minutes in his return, including the entire fourth quarter.

Porzingis highlighted his performance Wednesday by drilling four 3-pointers for the Wizards, who are shooting a sizzling 47.7 percent from beyond the arc over the last three games (51-for-107).

The 7-foot-3 forward/center has scored at least 25 points in three straight games and has reached the 20-point plateau on seven occasions this season.

Like Washington, Miami saw its season-high winning streak come to a halt on Wednesday. The Heat had won three in a row before opening a four-game road trip with a 112-104 setback to the Toronto Raptors.

Miami effectively was done in by a 21-0 run during the third quarter. The Heat also committed 23 turnovers and were outrebounded 42-23, including 16-4 on the offensive glass.

Max Strus led the way with 20 points for Miami, which had six players score in double figures. Gabe Vincent joined Strus in sinking three 3-pointers and finished with 16 points.

The Heat played without Bam Adebayo (bruised left knee), who is considered day-to-day. They also are expected to be without Victor Oladipo (left knee) for at least the remainder of the road trip, per coach Erik Spoelstra.

Padres sign Robert Suarez to five-year contract

Agreement includes a player opt-out clause after the 2025 season

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have signed right-handed pitcher Robert Suarez to a five-year contract through the 2027 season, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today. The agreement includes a player opt-out clause after the 2025 season.

Suarez, 31, made 45 relief appearances in his first Major League season in 2022, going 5-1 with a 2.27 ERA (12 ER, 47.2 IP), .176 opponents’ average, 11.52 SO/9 IP ratio, one save and 12 holds. He became one of just six relievers in MLB history to allow 0 earned runs across 20+ home appearances in a single regular season campaign, with St. Louis’ Kevin Siegrist in 2013 being the most recent hurler to do so. He was scoreless in each of his first five career Postseason appearances in 2022 across the Wild Card Series and NLDS, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out five. His seven relief outings during the Postseason tied with Nick Martinez for most on the club, and overall he went 0-1 with three holds, 3.00 ERA (3 ER, 9.0 IP) and .291 opponents’ average in the playoffs.

The Bolivar, Venezuela native spent the 2021 season pitching for the Hanshin Tigers in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball Organization and went 1-1 with a 1.16 ERA (8 ER, 62.1 IP), 0.77 WHIP (40 H, 8 BB) and 58 strikeouts (25.3% SO rate) over 62 relief appearances. He led all NPB pitchers with 42 saves and posted a 3.5% walk rate (two IBB). Over six seasons in the NPB, Suarez compiled a 7-13 record with a 2.81 ERA (64 ER, 20.50 IP), 1.16 WHIP and 209 strikeouts to just 70 walks (3.34 SO/BB ratio) in 191 career games between the Tigers (2020-21) and Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks (2016-19). He also spent the 2015 campaign pitching for the Saraperos de Saltillo in the Mexican League, going 5-0 with 23 saves and a 1.71 ERA (9 ER, 47.1 IP) in 43 relief appearances.

A’s Claim OF Brent Rooker off Waivers from Kansas City

0

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s claimed outfielder Brent Rooker off waivers from the Kansas City Royals, the club announced today.

Rooker combined to go 4-for-32 (.125) with a double, two RBI and three walks in 16 games with Kansas City and San Diego last season. He also hit .289 with 28 home runs, 87 RBI and a 1.044 OPS in 81 games with Triple-A El Paso and Triple-A Omaha. The 28-year-old right-handed hitter tied for seventh among all Triple-A hitters in home runs, ranked 10th in extra base hits (55) and tied for 10th in RBI. Rooker made his Major League debut with Minnesota in 2020 and is a .200 career hitter with 10 home runs and 23 RBI in 81 games in three seasons in the majors with the Twins (2020-21), Padres (2022) and Royals (2022). He was selected by the Twins as a competitive balance pick following the first round of the 2017 draft and is a .269 hitter with 102 home runs, 314 RBI and a .909 OPS in 402 games over five seasons in the minors.

STORYLINES
VISITING THE PREDATORS
The last time the Islanders visited the Predators was October 30, 2021, when Anthony Beauvillier and Oliver Wahlstrom found the scoresheet in a 3-2 shootout loss in Nashville. Wahlstrom (1g, 2a) and Mathew Barzal (2a) found the scoresheet each time these teams met last season (on October 30 and December 9). Tonight’s matchup is the Islanders’ sole visit to Nashville this season, and a win in Bridgestone Arena tonight would be the Islanders’ first since October 28, 2017. The Islanders are 2-6-2 against Nashville in their last ten meetings. Forward Zach Parise leads active Islanders in all three scoring categories against Nashville, as he has tallied 25 points (14 goals, 11 assists) in 35 games. Forward Cal Clutterbuck has six goals against Nashville in 30 career games. Islanders Head Coach Lane Lambert began his NHL coaching career in Nashville during the 2011-12 season, as an assistant coach.

AGAINST THE WEST
The Islanders enter tonight’s contest with a 6-1-0 record against Western Conference teams this season and began the 2022-23 campaign with a perfect 6-0-0 record against West opponents for the first time in franchise history. The Islanders have the third-best record against the West amongst Eastern Conference teams. Only New Jersey (8-0-0) and Boston (7-0-0) have better. The Islanders are 3-1-0 vs. Central Division teams so far.

IN THEIR LAST ELEVEN
The Islanders enter tonight’s matchup with an 8-2-0 record in their last ten games (9-2-0 in their last 11), third-best in the NHL (New Jersey 10-0-0, Boston 9-1-0). The Islanders have outscored opponents 57-43 so far this season, and are fourth in the league in points (22) and in wins (11). The Islanders have been particularly productive since October 26, 11 games ago. The Islanders have nine wins in that span, tied with New Jersey for the most in the league. They have scored 38 times since October 26, second-most in that span behind Vancouver (40) and have outscored their opponents by 13 goals (38-25), the third-largest margin in the NHL (Boston and New Jersey, 20).

ON THE ROAD
The Islanders’ 5-3-0 record in road games this season is fourth-best amongst Eastern Conference teams and 11th in the league. All five of the Islanders’ road wins have been recorded in their last ten games, and they are 5-1-0 on the road since October 28. Their five road wins in that span are tied with Vegas for most in the league.

ASSISTS LEADER
Islanders forward Mathew Barzal has recorded seven assists in his last five games. He is third in the NHL and leads the Islanders in assists (18) through 17 games so far this season. Barzal is the first Islander since 1984 (Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier) to record 18 assists through the first 17 games. He has recorded five multi-assist games so far this season, on pace to surpass the nine multi-assist contests he tallied in 73 games last season.

HITS RECORDS
Islanders forwards Cal Clutterbuck (3,621) and Matt Martin (3,460) are second and third amongst all NHLers in career hits, respectively (the stat has been collected since the 2005-06 season). Clutterbuck needs 12 hits to pass Dustin Brown (3,632) for the most all-time. Clutterbuck has 59 hits through 15 games this season (seventh in the league), and Martin has 52 (15th in the league).

STORYLINES
GOALTENDING
Islanders netminder Semyon Varlamov has earned victories in each of his last two starts, on November 8 (at NY Rangers) and 14 (at Ottawa). On Monday night vs. Ottawa, Varlamov turned away 36 of 38 shots faced to help the Islanders capture their 11th win of the season, and sixth win of the season while being outshot by their opponent. Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin ranks third amongst NHL goaltenders in save percentage (min. 5 GP), with .932 in 12 games, and ranks fourth in GAA, with 2.17. On Saturday night, Sorokin earned his seventh win of the season as he made 26 saves on 29 shots against Columbus. He is one of eight goalies to have recorded seven or more wins this season.

THE THIRD
The Islanders remain most productive in the third period. In their last four wins (Nov. 7, 8, 12 and 14), the Islanders have outscored opponents 8-2 in the third frame. Every victory the Islanders have captured so far this season has included an Islander finding the back of the net in the third. Since October 26, more than 50% (20 of the last 36) of Islander goals have been scored in the third, and the Islanders are 11-4-0 when they find the back of the net in the final frame. Their 28 third period goals this season leads the NHL.

FORWARD PRODUCTION
Nine Islanders forwards have recorded three or more goals through 17 games this season. Islanders forward Brock Nelson leads the team with nine goals. Nelson has scored a goal in the last eight consecutive Islander wins, and is tied for the lead in points (18, Mathew Barzal). Nelson has been held off the scoresheet just three times since October 22. Islanders team captain Anders Lee has found the scoresheet in eight of his last ten games, scoring ten points (four goals, six assists) in that span, and the Islanders are 10-2-0 when Lee finds the scoresheet so far this season. Lee is second on the Islanders in goals (eight), Third on the Islanders in assists (eight) and third on the team in points (16).

FACE-OFF WINS
Nov. 7 vs. Calgary, Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau recorded 20 face-off wins, good for a single-game season-high. It is the first time in Islander has recorded 20 wins on the face-off dot in a single game since January 13, 2017, when John Tavares recorded 21 vs. Florida. Pageau has recorded higher than a 50% FOW% in seven of his last eight games. He leads Islanders centers with 58.7 FOW%.

BLUELINERS
Through 17 games, Islanders defensemen have recorded 39 points. Islanders blueliners have scored 14 goals so far this season, leading the NHL. An Islanders defenseman has found the scoresheet in 13 of 17 games this season. Noah Dobson leads Islanders defensmen in all three scoring categories, with 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists). Monday night in Ottawa, Dobson tallied his third multi-point game of the season. Saturday night, defensemen Sebastian Aho (first career multi-assist game) and Scott Mayfield (game-tying goal and assist) helped the Islanders to a 4-3 win over Columbus. Adam Pelech scored the game-tying goal on Nov. 8 vs. the Rangers, his first goal since February 24. Pelech also set a new single-game season high amongst Islanders on Nov. 3, as he skated 24:30 TOI (his highest TOI since Dec. 19, 2021). Pelech leads the Islanders with a plus-10 rating through 17 games. Robin Salo’s set a single-game team-high as he recorded a +4 rating on October 15. It was a career-high and matched the Islanders’ single-game high set last season by Brock Nelson (Nov. 4 vs. MTL). Salo is the first Islander defenseman since

− Nov. 1 at Edmonton was Forsberg’s 32nd career three-point game, the most in Predators history.

GRANNY APPLES
− Mikael Granlund has opened 2022-23 with 11 assists and 12 points in his first 16 games.
