Cubs claim INF Rylan Bannon off waivers from Atlanta

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today claimed infielder Rylan Bannon off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. The Cubs 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.

Bannon, 26, split a majority of last season between the Orioles and Braves organizations, combining to hit .249 (85-for-342) with 18 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 77 RBI, 59 walks and a .367 on-base percentage between Triple-A Norfolk and Triple-A Gwinnett. He made 68 starts at third base, 23 as designated hitter and eight at second base.

The right-handed hitting Bannon made his major league debut with Baltimore, appearing in four games during two stints (May 12-17 and June 21-24), before he was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers August 8 then claimed off waivers by Atlanta August 16. He appeared in one game for the Braves while on the major league roster September 18-24.

In five minor league seasons, Bannon has hit .253 (432-for-1,706) with 92 doubles, 11 triples, 72 home runs, 276 RBI and an .805 OPS thanks to a .358 on-base percentage and a .447 slugging mark in 480 games, appearing at 300 games at third base, 129 games at second base and 23 games at designated hitter.

The five-foot eight-inch Bannon was named an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star and MiLB.com Organizational All-Star in 2019, splitting that season between Double-A Bowie and Norfolk. In 2018 with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, Bannon was tabbed as the California League’s Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year, leading the league with a .402 on-base percentage and a .559 slugging percentage.

Bannon, a Joliet, Ill., native, attended Joliet Christian Academy and Xavier University before being selected by the Dodgers in the eighth round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft. He was part of the July 18, 2018, six-player trade that sent infielder Manny Machado to Los Angeles Dodgers.

A’s Non-Tender Guerra, Koenig and MacKinnon

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s did not tender contracts to right-handed pitcher Deolis Guerra, left-handed pitcher Jared Koenig and infielder David MacKinnon, the club announced today.

Guerra made one appearance in Spring Training and began the season on the injured list with a sprained right ulnar collateral ligament. He underwent right elbow UCL reconstructive surgery on April 13 and missed the entire season.

Koenig made both his Triple-A and Major League debuts in 2022. He began the year at Las Vegas and went 6-6 with a 4.71 ERA and .753 opponents OPS in 20 games, including 18 starts. The 28-year-old left-hander then compiled a 1-3 record with a 5.72 ERA and .756 OPS in 10 games, five starts, over four stints with the A’s.

MacKinnon made his Major League debut with the Angels in 2022 and was claimed off waivers by the A’s on Aug. 5. He went 0-for-13 in six games with the A’s and batted .140 with six RBI in 22 games overall. The 27-year-old right-handed hitter combined for a .318 average, 15 home runs, 54 RBI and a 1.001 OPS in 79 games with Triple-A Salt Lake and Triple-A Las Vegas.

The A’s now have three open spots on the 40-man roster.

Angels acquire INF Gio Urshela from Minnesota

Minor League RHP Alejandro Hidalgo traded to Twins

ANAHEIM – The Angels today acquired INF Gio Urshela from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league RHP Alejandro Hidalgo. In a corresponding 40-man roster move, LHP Jhonathan Diaz has been designated for assignment.

Urshela, 31, (pronounced ur-SHEL-uh) set career highs in 2022 with 143 hits, 41 walks and 144 games for the Twins, while totaling 27 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 64 RBI. His 21 infield hits led the Twins and ranked 10th in the American League. Following the All-Star Break, his .317 (69/218) average ranked 11th in the A.L.

A native of Cartagena, Colombia, Urshela was originally signed by Cleveland as an international free agent in 2008 and made his Major League debut with Cleveland during the 2015 season. He has totaled 602 career games across parts of seven seasons with Cleveland (2015, 2017), Toronto (2018), New York (A.L.) (2019-21) and Minnesota (2022). Urshela also has four years of postseason experience, totaling 22 career playoff games and was a Gold Glove Award finalist in 2020 with the Yankees.

Hidalgo, 19, was originally signed by the Angels as an international free agent on July 2, 2019 and spent the 2022 campaign with Low-A Inland Empire. The Venezuelan native totaled 17 games (16 starts) across his two minor league seasons in the Angels organization.

Cardinals sign five Minor League free agents

Former Cardinals 2nd round draft pick Oscar Mercado rejoins organization

ST. LOUIS, Mo., – The St. Louis Cardinals announced the signing five minor league free agents, including a former second round draft pick.  Outfielder Oscar Mercado returns to the Cardinals after four years with Cleveland and Philadelphia, and infielder Taylor Motter, shortstop Juniel Querecuto (joo-nee-EL care-uh-KOO-toh), left-handed pitcher Kenny Hernandez and right-handed pitcher Logan Sawyer will also join the Cardinals organization for the 2023 season.

Mercado, who turns 28 on December 16, has played 278 games in Major League Baseball since his debut with Cleveland in 2019.  He was part of a 2018 trade in which St. Louis acquired minor league outfielders Jhon Torres and Conner Capel.  Originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 2013 June Amateur Draft, Mercado batted .235 with 26 home runs, 95 RBI and 27 stolen bases over four MLB seasons with career highs of .269 with 15 HR, 54 RBI and 15 stolen bases his 2019 rookie season.

Sawyer, 29, was a former 29th round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2014.  He pitched three of the last four years in the Independent Leagues and Australia.  In 2022, Sawyer dominated his opponents as a member of Evansville in the Frontier League, racking up 22 saves over 30 appearances with the Otters.  He allowed only one unearned run on 11 hits with three walks while striking out 39 batters over 30 innings.  His last action in affiliated ball was with the Rockies’ High-A affiliate in Modesto in 2016.

Motter, 33, is a former 17th round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Rays out of Coastal Carolina University in 2011.  The veteran of five years in Major League Baseball played the 2022 season between Gwinnett (AAA) and Louisville of the International League.  He cracked 20 home runs with 54 RBI earning a two-game promotion to Cincinnati.  Since 2016, he’s played all four infield positions and the two corner outfield spots as a member of Tampa Bay, Seattle, Minnesota, Colorado, Boston and Cincinnati totaling 159 games with a career batting average of .191 with 10 home runs and 38 RBI.

Quereceto, 30, last played in the Major Leagues in 2016 with the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Barquisimeto, Venezuela, native spent five seasons since with the Rays, Giants, Diamondbacks and Reds minor league affiliates and five winter seasons in the Venezuelan League.  Over his professional career, he’s played in 1,037 minor league games and four Major League games.

Hernandez, 24, was originally signed as an International free agent by the Diamondbacks in 2016 and has played six seasons advancing as high as Double-A Amarillo.  He’s appeared in 122 games, making 40 starts with a 26-22 record and 3.90 ERA. 

The Cardinals also announced yesterday the signing of right-handed pitcher Chris Stratton to a one-year contract.

Mets acquire RHP Elieser Hernandez & RHP Jeff Brigham

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets today announced the club has acquired RHP Elieser Hernandez and RHP Jeff Brigham from Miami in exchange for minor league RHP Franklin Sanchez and a player to be named later or cash.

Hernandez, 27, made 10 starts and 20 appearances overall for the Marlins in 2022, racking up 60 strikeouts in 62.1 innings. The Ocumare del Tuy, Venezuela native was 3-6 with a 6.35 ERA (44 earned runs/62.1 innings) this season.

From 2020-2021, Hernandez posted a 3.84 ERA (33 earned runs/77.1 innings) with 87 strikeouts in 17 combined starts for the Marlins. For his career, he has held righties to a .241 (134-556) batting average.

Overall, the 6-0, 214-pound righty is 10-21 with a 5.04 ERA (161 earned runs/287.2 innings) in 90 career games (48 starts) with the Marlins from 2018-2022.

Brigham, 30, had a 3.38 ERA (nine earned runs/24.0 innings) with one save in 16 games in relief for Miami last season. The 6-0, 195-pounder held lefties to a .229 (8-35) batting average in 2022.

The Federal Way, WA native is 3-7 with two saves and a 4.52 ERA (40 earned runs/79.2 innings) in 53 games (four starts) with the Marlins.

Sanchez, 22, was 2-2 with a 3.79 ERA (15 earned runs/35.2 innings) in 17 games (seven starts) with Brooklyn (High-A) and St. Lucie (Low-A) in 2022.

Colorado currently has a full 40-man roster.

Mets claim RHP William Woods

FLUSHING, N.Y.,  The New York Mets announced today that the club has claimed right-handed pitcher William Woods off waivers from Atlanta.

Woods, 23, made his major league debut with the Braves this season, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in two appearances. In four minor league seasons in the Atlanta organization, he is 2-9 with a 4.60 ERA (55 ER/107.2 IP) in 59 games (18 starts).

Colorado Rockies agree to contract extension with right-handed pitcher Tyler Kinley
