Mets acquire LHP Brooks Raley from Tampa Bay

0

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets today announced that the club has acquired left-handed pitcher Brooks Raley from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for minor league left-handed pitcher Keyshawn Askew.

Raley, 34, appeared in 60 games with the Rays last season. He went 1-2 with six saves and a 2.68 ERA (16 ER/53.2 IP) with 15 walks and 61 strikeouts. In 2022, he held left-handed hitters to a .155 (11-71) batting average with three walks and 25 strikeouts.

Over his major league career, lefties have hit .170 (37-218) against him with 13 walks and 86 strikeouts. Since returning from a five-year stint in Korea in 2020, left-handed hitters have gone 30-181 (.166) against Raley, good for the second-lowest opponent batting average vs. lefties in the majors over the last three seasons (min. 175 LHB faced).

Over the course of five major league seasons with the Chicago Cubs (2012-2013), Cincinnati Reds (2020), Houston Astros (2020-2021) and Rays (2022), he is 4-8 with nine saves, a 4.64 ERA (83 ER/161.0 IP) with 56 walks and 183 punchouts.

The southpaw spent five seasons with the Lotte Giants in the Korean Baseball Organization from 2015-2019, pitching to a 48-53 record in 152 games (151 starts) with a 4.13 ERA (418 ER /910.2 IP) with 271 walks and 755 strikeouts.

Raley graduated from Uvalde High School in Texas before attending Texas A&M. He was originally selected by Chicago Cubs in the sixth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.

Askew, 22, was the Mets’ 10th-round selection in the 2021 First-Year Player Draft. In 22 appearances (nine starts) over two minor league seasons with New York, he was 7-0 with a 2.27 ERA (19 ER/75.1 IP).

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound righty is a 2019 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He was originally selected by Boston in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft. During his four-year collegiate career with the Naval Academy, he went 32-13 with a 2.37 ERA in 58 games (54 starts) while recording 428 strikeouts in 334.1 innings pitched. Song also tossed 14 complete games, including nine shutouts. That year, he led all qualifying NCAA Division I pitchers in strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched (15.41).

The Phillies have placed Song on the military list as he continues his active duty service with the Navy. He will not count toward the club’s 40-man roster at this time.

Washington Nationals select right-handed pitcher Thad Ward in 2022 Rule 5 Draft

0

The Washington Nationals selected right-handed pitcher Thad Ward in the Major League phase of the 2022 Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Ward, 25, went 0-2 with a 2.28 ERA in 13 starts across four levels of Boston’s Minor League system in 2022. He struck out 66 batters and held opposing batters to a .212 batting average in 51.1 innings pitched. Ward posted a 2.84 ERA with 15 strikeouts in four games (three starts) during the Arizona Fall League season.

The 6-foot-3, 192-pound right-hander was Boston’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2019 after leading the system with 157 strikeouts. He went 8-5 with a 2.14 ERA in 25 starts between Single-A Greenville and High-A Salem in his first full professional season. Ward did not pitch during the 2020 season and underwent Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery on June 3, 2021.

Ward entered the 2022 season rated as the No. 15 prospect in the Red Sox organization according to MLB Pipeline and the No. 19 prospect according to Baseball America. He was among Boston’s top 10 prospects in 2021 (No. 10) and 2020 (No. 7) and was cited by Baseball America as having the organization’s “best control” in 2021 and “best slider” in 2020.

Ward was selected by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Central Florida. He is 8-10 with a 2.53 ERA, 10.8 strikeouts per 9.0 innings and a .218 opponents’ batting average in 51 career Minor League starts.

The Nationals now have 39 players on their 40-man roster. Please see attached document for the updated 40-man roster.

WBB: Nevada set for ‘When I Grow Up’ game against LBSU Thursday

RENO, Nev. – Nevada women’s basketball will play in its annual ‘When I Grow Up’ game on Thursday at Lawlor Events Center against Long Beach State at 11 a.m.

Larry Burnett will have the call on 94.1 FM and 1450 AM, with a 20 minute pregame show prior to tipoff. Fans can also listen live online through the Varsity Network. The game will be available to watch on Nevada Sports Net and live stats can be accessed through Sidearm.

Nevada will reinstate its annual “When I Grow Up” game for the first time since Dec. 10, 2019, defeating Stanislaus State 80-62 in front of a crowd of 3,812. Doors will open at 9 a.m. and is sponsored by the Nell J Redfield Foundation. The Pack have been victorious in their last six “When I Grow Up” games.

Fans are encouraged to buy tickets online in advance starting at just $10. Tickets purchased at Lawlor Events Center the day of the game will start at $12.

Ticket Holders are encouraged to sit in the lower, court-level, Sections A-P. Sections 1-36 will be reserved for Washoe County School Districts who have RSVP’d for Thursday’s game. Fans are encouraged to park on the top level of the West Stadium Parking Garage.

Lexie GivensAlyssa Jimenez and Victoria Davis have contributed heavily in multiple categories recently for the Pack. Givens produced back-to-back double-doubles for points and rebounds in the 2022 Nugget Classic on Nov. 25 and 27, earning All-Tournament team honors in the process. She was the first Nevada player since Terae Briggs in 2018 to post a double-double in back-to-back games. Davis and Jimenez came up with double digit numbers in points and rebounds against Idaho on Dec. 3, becoming the first Nevada duo to collect a double-double in the same game since 2019.

Nevada had key scoring contributions from five players in each of the Pack’s games during the USD Winter Classic Dec. 3-4. The Pack had five players score in double figures in each of its two games in San Diego, the first time since Feb. 19, 2020 Nevada had at least five players score at least 10 points in a game.

This year’s Nevada women’s basketball team ranks 40th in the nation and fifth in the Mountain West in steals per game with a 11.1 mark. Redshirt junior Alyssa Jimenez became the seventh player since 2013 to record 100 career steals. She is the fastest player since 2013 to reach that mark.

SCOUTING LONG BEACH STATE
2022 WNIT competitor Long Beach State reunites with Nevada on Thursday, a former rival in the Big West Conference. Long Beach State has won two out of its last three games, most recently knocking off Cal Baptist. This will be Long Beach State’s first meeting with Nevada since 2018 and first trip to Reno since 2016.

Long Beach State has three players who average at least 11 points per game, led by Malia Bambrick with a 13.0 mark. Kianna Hamilton-Fisher adds production with 12.7 points per game while Tori Harris puts up 11 points per game while averaging over four rebounds per game.
