NBA Preview: Brooklyn Nets (15-12) at Indiana Pacers (14-12)

0

The last time the Brooklyn Nets were on the road, they showed a lack of poise in the fourth quarter against the Indiana Pacers.

Then, the Nets won six times on a season-high, seven-game homestand by demonstrating plenty of composure down the stretch. They hope their recent experience at closing games translates to another win Saturday night when they face the Pacers in Indianapolis.

Brooklyn is coming off a 6-1 homestand in which five wins were decided by single digits, including a 120-116 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday. The Nets, who led most of the way, never got the lead above 12, but they made enough plays in the final minutes.

One of Brooklyn’s clutch plays was a go-ahead 3-pointer by Kevin Durant with 3:17 remaining that put the Nets ahead 111-109. The trey highlighted a 34-point showing by Durant, who averaged 32.3 points on the homestand while also playing at least 36 minutes each time.

The successful homestand occurred after the Nets folded badly in the final quarter of their 128-117 loss at Indiana on Nov. 25. In that contest, Brooklyn was outscored 40-23 during a fourth quarter in which the Pacers shot 63.2 percent and forced eight turnovers.

Because Saturday is the second night of a back-to-back for the Nets, Ben Simmons is not expected to play after returning Friday following a four-game absence caused by a calf injury. Neither is T.J. Warren, who returned Dec. 2 from missing nearly two years while recovering from foot injuries.

Vaughn was non-committal about whether Durant would play as the Nets are hoping to limit his minutes.

Indiana is 3-5 since its last encounter with the Nets. After losing five times on a seven-game road trip, the Pacers improved to 8-4 at home with a 121-111 victory over the Washington Wizards on Friday night.

The Pacers hit 18 3-pointers vs. Washington after making 19 in a loss at Minnesota on Wednesday. Indiana limited the Wizards to 40 percent shooting in the second half after Washington made 64.3 percent of its field-goal attempts in the first half.

Indiana’s Buddy Hield scored a season-high 28 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including 4 of 10 from 3-point range. He has made at least four 3-pointers in four consecutive games, and he put up 26 points in the last meeting with the Nets.

Tyrese Haliburton added 23 points and 11 assists for his 16th double-double. He logged 26 points and 15 assists on Wednesday following a two-game absence caused by a strained groin.

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs (7-18) at Miami Heat (12-14)

0

These are no longer those San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs, who are set to visit the Miami Heat on Saturday, won five NBA titles from 1999 to 2014, all under Gregg Popovich.

And although Popovich is still the coach, long gone are stars such as Tim Duncan, David Robinson and Kawhi Leonard.

This past June, the Spurs traded away their best player — Dejounte Murray — for draft picks, which was a clear sign that San Antonio is on a full-on rebuilding mode.

Popovich is still the coach. But he turns 74 in January, and it seems doubtful he will still be there when things get turned around.

The Spurs are tied with the Houston Rockets for the worst record in the Western Conference at 7-18. In fact, San Antonio snapped an 11-game losing streak by beating Houston on Thursday.

It was San Antonio’s first win since Nov. 11, marking the second-longest skid in Spurs history.

The Spurs have not been a resilient bunch this season, going just 1-15 when trailing after the first quarter.

Point guard Tre Jones, who is averaging 12.7 points, leads the Spurs in assists (6.8) and steals (1.5). Jakob Poeltl, who is averaging 12.9 points, leads San Antonio in rebounds (9.9).

Among San Antonio shooters who average more than two 3-point attempts per game, Devin Vassell (.418) and Doug McDermott (.416) lead in accuracy. Johnson (20.9) and Vassell (20.5) are the Spurs’ top two scorers.

Jones and Vassell are each 22, Johnson is 23, and rookie starter Jeremy Sochan is 19 — all part of the youth movement.

The Heat, meanwhile, are trying to win right now with veterans such as Kyle Lowry, 36, and Jimmy Butler, 33, in starting roles.

Despite its experience, Miami has struggled to find momentum this season, going just 2-3 in its past five games and 12-14 overall. But the Heat are coming off a 115-110 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.

Heat center Bam Adebayo, who had 31 points and 10 rebounds against the Clippers — game highs in both categories — is optimistic Miami will get going soon.

Butler leads Miami in scoring (21.3), assists (6.1) and steals (1.8). Adebayo is second in scoring (21.2) and first in rebounds (9.2). Tyler Herro is third in scoring (19.9), rebounds (6.7) and assists (4.2).

Lowry, who is fourth in scoring (14.4) and second in assists (6.0), missed Thursday’s game for rest purposes. He is expected to return on Saturday.

Caleb Martin, who has started 25 of Miami’s 26 games this season, has gone beneath the radar this season. Yet, he is averaging 11.3 points and leads the team in 3-point percentage (41.5).

Butler leads the Heat in free-throw attempts (7.3), and he makes 86.3 percent from the line.

Rangers sign free agent LHP Andrew Heaney to two-year contract covering 2023-24 seasons

0

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has signed free agent left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney to a two-year contract covering the 2023-24 seasons.

No financial terms were disclosed.  Details for a press conference to introduce Heaney will be announced next week.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Heaney, right-handed pitcher A.J. Alexy has been designated for assignment.

“Andrew is an important addition to the staff as we continue improving our roster for the 2023 season,” said Rangers Executive Vice President and General Manager Chris Young.  “He was one of the most effective pitchers in the Majors over the final two months last season, and we look forward to working with Andrew on carrying that momentum into next year.”

Heaney, 31, went 4-4 with a 3.10 ERA (25 ER/72.2 IP) over 16 games/14 starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, enduring a pair of stints on the Injured List: April 20-June 18 (left shoulder discomfort) and June 24-July 26 (left shoulder inflammation). He recorded 110 strikeouts while issuing just 19 walks last season, as his career-best 13.62 strikeouts per 9 innings figure was the 2nd-highest mark among pitchers with at least 70.0 innings (13.81 SO/9 by ATL’s Spencer Strider).

According to FanGraphs, Heaney registered a career-best 16.8% swing-and-miss strike percentage in 2022, the highest rate among pitchers with at least 70.0 innings. He limited opponents to a .214/.285/.429/.713 (60-280) slash line, posting reverse splits vs. right-handed (.210 BA) and left-handed (.230 BA) batters.

He made the first and only postseason appearance of his career on October 14, 2022, a relief outing in the Dodgers’ 2-1 defeat in Game 3 of the National League Division Series vs. San Diego (ND, 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R-ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR).

Since the start of 2019, Heaney ranks among Major League pitchers (min. 350.0 IP) in strikeouts per 9 innings (9th, 11.07), swing-and-miss strike pct. (14th, 13.8%), strikeout pct. (15th, 28.8%), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (21st, 4.11).

The nine-year Major League veteran has gone 36-42 with a 4.56 ERA (358 ER/707.0 IP) over 137 games/126 starts with Miami (2014), Los Angeles-AL (2015-21), New York-AL (2021), and Los Angeles-NL (2022). He has struck out 760 of 2995 (25.4%) batters faced in his career, the 7th-highest strikeout percentage among active left-handed pitchers with at least 100 MLB starts.

An Oklahoma City native, Heaney pitched collegiately at Oklahoma State University before being selected by the Miami Marlins in the first round (9th overall) of the 2012 MLB Draft.

Alexy, 24, was originally acquired by the Rangers from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade on July 31, 2017 involving starting pitcher Yu Darvish. Alexy went 1-1 with a 11.57 ERA over 4 relief appearances spanning five total stints with the Rangers in 2022.  He spent the balance of the year at Triple-A Round Rock, going 6-6 with a 5.91 ERA over 31 games/16 starts.

With today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the Major League roster.

RANGERS SIGN THREE TO MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACTS: The Rangers have signed a total of three players to minor league contracts: C David Garcia, LHP Lucas Jacobsen, and RHP Nick Snyder.

Garcia, 22, recorded a .229 batting average, 5 home runs and 39 RBI over 70 games with Double-A Frisco and Rookie-level Arizona Complex League Rangers this season. The Venezuela native owns a career .247 batting average, 17 home runs and 154 RBI over five minor league campaigns since signing with Texas as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2016.

The 27-year-old Jacobsen went 0-1 with 3 saves, a 2.29 ERA (5 ER/19.2 IP), and 13.7 strikeouts per 9 innings figure across 19 games/one start for Triple-A Round Rock and Double-A Frisco in 2022. He owns a lifetime 5-5 record, 6 saves, 3.80 ERA (31 ER/73.1 IP), and 14.1 strikeouts per 9 innings over 59 games/one start in four minor league seasons since being selected by the Rangers in the 27th round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Long Beach State.

Snyder, 27, was non-tendered by Texas on Nov. 18, 2022 after he posted no record and a 18.00 ERA (2 ER/1.0 IP) in 2 relief appearances with the Rangers last season. He spent the majority of the campaign with Triple-A Round Rock, going 2-2 with 2 saves and a 4.97 ERA (21 ER/38.0 IP) over 41 games/one start. The Palm City, Fla. native has gone 9-6 with 12 saves, a 3.59 ERA (57 ER/143.0 IP), and 11.1 strikeouts per 9 innings figure across 119 games/one start over five seasons in the minors. Snyder was originally selected by Texas in the 19th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla

Mets sign All-Star LHP José Quintana

0

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets today announced that the club has signed All-Star left-handed pitcher José Quintana (keen-TAH-nuh) to a two-year contract.

Quintana, 33, posted a career-best 2.93 ERA (54 ER/165.2 IP) across 32 starts last season between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals. His 0.43 HR/9 IP rate was the lowest mark among qualified major league starters last season. He did not allow a home run in his final 61.2 innings, the longest active streak in the majors. Over his last 14 starts in 2022, the southpaw went 4-2 with a 1.67 ERA (14 ER/75.1 IP) and allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of those outings. He allowed more than four earned runs in only one of his 32 starts last season.

“Over the last decade, José has been one of the most dependable starting pitchers in the majors,” Mets General Manager Billy Eppler said. “Adding another left-handed option to our rotation, especially one with his durability, experience, and moxie, will give our starting staff quality depth.”

Quintana is the only pitcher in the major leagues who has made at least 30 starts in eight different seasons since 2013. Since breaking into the majors in 2012, Quintana ranks in the top 10 among left-handed pitchers in starts (third, 289), innings pitched (fourth, 1,723.2), strikeouts (sixth, 1,532) and wins (t-10th, 89).

Quintana, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander each started Game 1 of their respective team’s playoff run last season. According to Elias, the 2023 Mets will be the first team to have three pitchers who each started his team’s first game of a Postseason run the previous season.

The 11-year major league veteran was named an American League All-Star and finished 10th in the AL Cy Young Award voting in 2016 after going 13-12 with a 3.20 ERA (74 ER/208.0 IP) with 181 strikeouts and a 1.16 WHIP.

The Arjona, Colombia native owns a career record of 89-87 with a 3.75 ERA (718 ER/1,723.2 IP) in 315 career games (289 starts) with the White Sox (2012–2017), Cubs (2017-2020), Angels (2021), Giants (2021), Pirates (2022) and Cardinals (2022). He became the first Colombian-born pitcher to reach 1,000.0 career innings in the majors. Quintana would be the second Columbian-born player to appear for the Mets in the majors, joining Dilson Herrera.

Padres sign Xander Bogaerts to 11-year contract

0

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres have signed infielder Xander Bogaerts to a 11-year contract through the 2033 season, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

“We are very excited to add Xander to the San Diego Padres,” Preller said. “His consistency and top-level production places him among the best players in our game. Xander’s makeup and championship pedigree are a strong fit for our team as we look to achieve our goal of bringing a World Series Championship to San Diego.”

Bogaerts (BOH-garts), 30, led the Boston Red Sox in hits (171), AVG (.307), OBP (.377), walks (57) and runs scored (tied, 84) in 2022, and was one of only 11 qualifying Major League players to hit at least .300. The 6-2, 226-pound right-handed hitter was voted an American League All-Star reserve by the player ballot, his fourth career All-Star selection (also: 2016, 2019, 2021), making him one of only 10 Major League players to be selected to each of the last three All-Star Games. He played in at least 150 games for the fourth time (also: 2015-16, 2019), and it was also his fourth consecutive season without being placed on the Injured List due to injury (non-COVID IL). Bogaerts joined Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman as the only three players with an .825+ OPS in each season from 2018-22, and he’s one of just seven shortstops to post at least five consecutive seasons with an .825+ OPS in the Modern Era. He became one of 26 players in MLB history with 150+ home runs and 300+ doubles before turning 30 years old, earned his fifth career Louisville Silver Slugger award (also: 2015-16, 2019, 2021), and was a Gold Glove Award finalist, setting career bests in defensive runs saved (four), ultimate zone rating (4.9) and outs above average (five).

The Oranjestad, Aruba native is a career .292 hitter (1410-for-4834) with 308 doubles, 15 triples, 156 home runs, 683 RBI and 752 runs scored in 1,264 career Major League games. He has made 1,192 appearances at shortstop, 53 appearances at third base and 12 appearances as the designated hitter. A two-time World Series champion (2013, 2018), Bogaerts has played in 44 career Postseason games and compiled a .231/309/.381 slash line with seven doubles, one triple, five home runs, 16 RBI and 24 runs scored. He was an inaugural All-MLB First Team selection in 2019, setting career highs in extra-base hits (85), RBI (117) and OPS (.939). Bogaerts was originally signed by Boston as an international free agent on August 23, 2009, and has spent all 13 of his professional seasons with the Red Sox organization, including 9.042 years of service time at the Major League level. He is one of six Aruban-born players in MLB history, and speaks English, Spanish, Dutch, and Papiamento. He played for Netherlands in the 2013 and ‘17 World Baseball Classics, and he was knighted in 2011 by the governor of Aruba.

Bogaerts will wear No. 2. Trent Grisham, who previously wore No. 2 for the Padres, will select a new uniform number in the coming days.

Cardinals sign All-Star catcher Willson Contreras; three-time All-Star inks five-year deal with club option for 2028

0

ST. LOUIS, MO., – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed free-agent All-Star catcher Willson Contreras to a five-year contract (2023-27) that includes a club option for 2028.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are pleased to introduce Willson Contreras as the newest member of the St. Louis Cardinals,” stated Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.  “Willson is a proven All-Star performer who is driven to win each and every day.  The Cardinals have had a lengthy history of standout catchers, and we feel that Willson is someone who is capable of adding his name to that distinguished list in the years to come.”

Contreras, 30, has played seven seasons with the Chicago Cubs and was the longest active tenured member of the organization when he became a free agent at the end of the 2022 season.

Over his seven-year Major League career, Contreras has appeared in 734 games, batting .256 with 117 home runs, 365 RBI and an on-base percentage of .349, ranking 3rd among all primary catchers in on-base percentage since arriving in the Major Leagues in 2016.  Defensively, he ranks 2nd among all active Major League catchers with 25 pick-offs and has the most since 2016.

In 2022, Contreras played in 113 games, batting .243 with 22 home runs, 55 RBI and posted single-season career highs with 65 runs scored and 47 extra base hits.

The native of Puerto Caballo, Venezuela, is a four-time postseason participant, playing in 30 games, and won a World Series in 2016.  He was named as the starting catcher for the National League All-Star team in 2018, 2019 and 2022.

The right-handed hitting Contreras has hit 20 or more home runs in four seasons since 2017, tied with Salvador Pérez and Yasmani Grandal for the most among MLB catchers over that period, becoming the only catcher in Cubs history with four seasons of 20 or more home runs.

Contreras has appeared at five different positions, primarily at catcher with 626 games, followed by 39 in the outfield, 11 at first base and two at third base.  His 5,016 career innings at catcher rank 7th-most among MLB catchers from 2016-22, including leading all MLB catchers with 1,109.2 in 2018.

His brother, William, has played for the Atlanta Braves since 2020 and the two brothers started for the National League in the 2022 All-Star Game, the 5th set of brothers to start an All-Star Game in the same year.

Mets sign All-Star RHP David Robertson

0

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets announced today that the club has signed All-Star right-handed pitcher David Robertson to a one-year contract.

“We’re very excited to add a pitcher of David’s caliber to our bullpen,” Mets General Manager Billy Eppler said. “He has been pitching in high-leverage situations for teams with Postseason expectations since his career started.”

Robertson, 37, spent the 2022 season between the Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Phillies where he totaled a 4-3 record with 20 saves and a 2.40 ERA (17 ER/63.2 IP) with 35 walks and 81 strikeouts. Robertson ranked tied for seventh among National League relievers in opponents’ batting average (.173), tied for eighth in saves and tied for ninth in strikeouts. He placed 10th among relievers in the majors in expected batting average allowed with a .176 mark (min. 200 batters faced). He recorded 20 or more saves in a season for the fourth time in career, also doing so in each year from 2014-16.

The Birmingham, AL native made eight appearances in the 2022 Postseason for the NL Champion Phillies, going 1-0 with a save and a 1.17 ERA (1 ER/7.2 IP) with five walks and 11 strikeouts. He threw 4.0 scoreless innings and recorded a save in this year’s World Series. He ranks tied for eighth all-time with 41 career appearances in the Postseason, pitching to a 6-0 record in the playoffs with a save and a 2.78 ERA (14 ER/45.1 IP) with 16 walks and 53 punchouts.

The 14-year major league veteran owns a career record of 57-36 with 157 saves, a 2.89 ERA (237 ER/739.1 IP) with 305 walks and 977 strikeouts with the New York-AL (2008-14, 2017-18), White Sox (2015-17), Phillies (2019, 2022), Rays (2021) and Cubs (2022). His 731 career appearances are the eighth-most among all active pitchers, while his 157 career saves are tied for eighth-most. He ranks 13th all-time in strikeout rate by a relief pitcher, whiffing hitters at a 32.1 percent clip.

The right-handed pitcher earned All-Star honors in 2011 as a member of the Yankees, posting a 4-0 record with a save and a 1.08 ERA (8 ER/66.2 IP) with 35 walks and 100 punchouts. He finished 11th in Cy Young Award voting that season and 22nd in the AL MVP race.

Robertson was originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 17th round of the 2006 First-Year Draft out of the University of Alabama.

Phillies sign Matt Strahm

0

The Phillies have signed left-handed pitcher Matt Strahm to a two-year contract, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

Strahm, 31, pitched exclusively in relief for the Boston Red Sox last season, posting a 3.83 ERA (19 ER, 44.2 IP) in 50 appearances.  He had 52 strikeouts to 17 walks and allowed only five home runs to the 193 batters he faced in 2022.

In 182 career appearances as a reliever, Strahm has posted a 3.11 ERA (68 ER, 196.2 IP) and has held the 821 batters he has faced in relief to a .213/.302/.339 slash line.  He has struck out 214 of those 821 batters (26.1%).

A veteran of seven major league seasons, Strahm has a career 3.81 ERA (129 ER, 304.2 IP) in 207 total games (25 starts) between the Kansas City Royals (2016-17), San Diego Padres (2018-21) and Red Sox (2022).  He was originally selected by the Royals in the 21st round of the 2012 MLB Draft.

A native of West Fargo, N.D., Strahm attended Neosho County Community College. He will wear No. 25.
