Guardians sign 1B/DH Josh Bell

0

CLEVELAND, OH – The Cleveland Guardians today announced the following transaction:

Signed free agent 1B/DH JOSH BELL to a two-year Major League contract that includes a player opt-out after the 2023 season.

Bell, 30, split the 2022 season between the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres, collecting career-highs in hits (147) and walks (81) on his way to winning his first career Silver Slugger Award (DH). For the year, he batted a combined .266 (147-for-552) with 29 doubles, 3 triples, 17 home runs and 71 RBI in 156 games (.362/.422/ .784). At the time of his August 2nd trade to San Diego along with Juan Soto, he ranked fourth in the National League in on-base pct. (.384), fifth in average (.301), sixth in hits (113) and seventh in OPS (.877), compiling two 15-game on-base streaks along the way. For the year, he finished sixth in the NL in walks and eighth in on-base pct. (.362).

The 2019 NL All-Star and Progressive Field Home Run Deby participant started his professional career with the Pittsburgh Pirates after his 2011 second round selection (61st overall) out of Dallas’ Jesuit College Prep School. He was named Pittsburgh’s Minor League Player of the Year in 2014 and 2016, participated in two SiriusXM Futures Games (2014-15) and was a consensus top-100 prospect prior to his 2016 MLB debut. He played five seasons for the Pirates, finishing third in the 2017 NL Rookie of the Year voting, and finishing sixth in the NL in RBI (116) and extra-base hits (77) during his 2019 All-Star campaign. He was traded to Washington following the 2020 season, spending a season and a half with the Nationals. For his career, he has batted .307 (138-for-449) with 29 2B, 22 HR and 76 RBI in 121 games vs. the American League clubs (.378/.532/.910), including a .314 (64-for-204) mark vs. the AL Central (.875 OPS). Since 2017, he ranks fourth among ML switch-hitters in HR (127), total bases (1303) and extra-base hits (294).

Josh has been very active in the community during his time in the Majors, serving as the official player ambassador for the Nationals Philanthropies’ Youth Baseball Academy and was Washington’s Roberto Clemente Award nominee in 2022 in addition to being Pittsburgh’s 2020 nominee. He also shared his love of reading by launching the Josh Bell Book Club in 2021, a monthly program in which he selected books written to inspire being and becoming better individuals, expanding the book club concept in 2022 to reach Black children. He worked with the Washington D.C. Capital Guardian Youth ChalleNGe Academy, whose mission is to help at-risk youth. He was voted the “Good Guy” Award by Washington D.C. media after the 2021 season.

Blue Bombers extend contract of longest-serving Blue Bomber Jake Thomas

0

WINNIPEG, MB., – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club signed veteran Canadian defensive tackle Jake Thomas to a one-year extension. Thomas was scheduled to become a free agent in February.

Thomas (6-2, 274, Acadia University; born: December 6, 1990, in Douglas, N.B.) returns in 2023 for what will be his 11th Canadian Football League season, all of them with the Blue Bombers.

Those 11 seasons and 169 regular season games played make Thomas the longest-serving player currently on the team.

In 2022, Thomas registered four quarterback sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He has not missed a single game in the last five seasons and has missed just seven games in his entire career.

Originally selected by the Blue Bombers in fourth round, 29th overall, in the 2012 CFL Draft, Thomas has registered 144 tackles and 26 sacks for the club.

NBA Preview: Boston Celtics (21-6) at Los Angeles Clippers (15-13)

0

Following a stumble against the defending NBA champions, the visiting Boston Celtics will be on the rebound Monday when they face the Los Angeles Clippers to continue their West Coast swing.

The Celtics went into San Francisco on Saturday and never led after the first quarter in a 123-107 loss to the Golden State Warriors in a rematch of last season’s NBA Finals. Boston has still won eight of its last 10 games and 17 of the past 20 despite the defeat.

Jaylen Brown scored 31 points for the Celtics on Saturday, but Jayson Tatum was held to 18, well under his 30 points-per-game average. Boston was outrebounded 53-39.

The Celtics don’t get another shot for revenge against the Warriors until Jan. 19 in Boston, but do get to move on to face the Clippers, who were projected to be a top team in the Western Conference.

Los Angeles has been plodding along at 15-13 due to a bevy of injuries that have limited star forward Kawhi Leonard to eight games, while fellow team leader Paul George has played in 20.

Saturday was just the seventh time George and Leonard have played together this season, with three of those coming on the team’s just-concluded East Coast road trip. The duo helped the Clippers to a 114-107 victory over the Washington Wizards on Saturday in a game that was all about John Wall’s return to the nation’s capital.

Wall made his first start for the Clippers in the matchup against his former team and contributed 13 points on a night where he was showered with cheers from the home fans.

After struggles with injuries and personal challenges over the past four seasons, including not playing at all last season, Wall has been a solid addition to the Clippers’ backcourt off the bench. However, lingering knee soreness from Leonard’s surgery over a year ago has prevented the team from reaching its full potential.

In Leonard’s eight games, he has averaged 11.6 points with 5.1 rebounds, well under his totals of 26.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in his previous two full seasons in Los Angeles.

Reggie Jackson is expected to be back in the Clippers’ starting lineup after sitting out for rest Saturday, while Norman Powell could return from a groin injury.

Boston’s Al Horford in in health and safety protocols, with Blake Griffin in line to get more minutes against his former team. Griffin, who played most of his first eight seasons with the Clippers, has been used sparingly by the Celtics, seeing action in 11 games.

NBA Preview: Minnesota Timberwolves (13-13) at Portland Trail Blazers (14-12)

0

Damian Lillard, Blazers set to close back-to-back with Wolves

It didn’t take Damian Lillard long to return to form after dealing with his second right calf strain of the season.

Lillard aims for his fourth straight 20-point outing since making it back into the lineup when the Portland Trail Blazers host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night in the second end of a back-to-back between the clubs.

Portland won the opener 124-118 on Saturday night when Lillard poured in 36 points. Two nights earlier, Lillard scored 40 points, made a season-high nine 3-pointers and matched his season best of 12 assists during a 121-120 home loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Lillard was 15 of 15 from the free-throw line on Saturday and Portland was 25 of 28 as a team.

Lillard is averaging 32.3 points since his latest return. He also has received help on the offensive end from Anfernee Simons, who made five 3-pointers and scored 31 points on Saturday.

Simons has topped 30 points in four of the past eight games, but he had a subpar outing against Denver when he scored just six points on 3-of-12 shooting.

Simons was back in form by making 13 of 22 shots against Minnesota.

Having two guards combine for 67 points was crucial, but the Trail Blazers also thrived on the boards with a dominating 45-28 rebounding advantage. Portland had an 11-4 edge on the offensive end.

Minnesota had defeated Portland five consecutive times before falling short on the second contest of their five-game road trip. The Timberwolves beat the Utah Jazz 118-108 in the opener on Friday night.

Against the Trail Blazers, Anthony Edwards scored 26 points, Rudy Gobert had 24 points and nine rebounds and D’Angelo Russell also scored 24 points. Russell and Edwards each made four 3-pointers.

But Finch was very aware his team didn’t match Portland’s intensity in the interior.

Gobert has connected on 17 of 22 shots while averaging 23 points over the past two games. He scored 22 on Friday when he made his triumphant return to play the Jazz, his team of the previous nine seasons.

Gobert is averaging 14.3 rebounds over the past three games, a stretch that began with 21 boards against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday.

Kyle Anderson has started the road trip well with averages of 14.5 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the first two games.

Backup guard Jordan McLaughlin (strained left calf) will likely miss his second straight contest.

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawks (14-13) at Memphis Grizzlies (17-9)

0

The well-rested Memphis Grizzlies will be aiming for their sixth straight win when they host the Atlanta Hawks on Monday.

Memphis stretched its winning streak with a 114-103 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday. The Hawks ended a three-game skid when they defeated the Chicago Bulls 123-122 in overtime on Sunday.

This will be the teams’ first meeting of the season. The Hawks swept both games last season by an average of 23.5 points and have won two straight in Memphis.

Ja Morant shook off right thigh soreness and posted 15 points and 12 assists against the Pistons. He set a franchise record, surpassing Marc Gasol, with his sixth career triple-double on Wednesday against Oklahoma City.

Last season Morant left the first game with Atlanta in the first quarter after spraining his left knee but came back to score 29 points in the rematch.

Atlanta used a miracle finish to beat the Bulls on Sunday. Jalen Johnson inbounded the ball with 0.5 seconds left and AJ Griffin tipped in the alley-oop pass for the game-winner at the buzzer.

The Hawks appeared to have won the game when Trae Young hit a step-back jumper from the top of the key with 2.1 seconds left in overtime. After the Bulls called a timeout with one second left, Bogdan Bogdanovic fouled DeMar DeRozan on a 3-point shot with 0.5 seconds remaining and he made all three free throws to put the Bulls ahead 122-121. That set up the dramatic finish.

Although Young had 19 points against the Bulls, he continues to have trouble shooting. He didn’t convert a field goal in the first half against Chicago and wound up 5-for-18 from the field and 2-for-8 on 3-pointers. He has scored fewer than 20 points in three of his last six games.

Bogdanovic has 59 points in his last two games and appears fully recovered from offseason knee surgery. He is still playing on restricted minutes.

The Hawks are without starters John Collins and Dejounte Murray, who are both out with sprained left ankles.

The Grizzlies may be without starting center Steven Adams, who limped to the locker room in the fourth quarter Friday with an ankle injury and did not return. Jake LaRavia (left foot soreness) missed Friday’s game and will be reassessed before Monday’s contest.

There have been 65 games in which a team has come back to win or tie after trailing in the fourth quarter, tied with the 1989 season (65) for the second-most such games through the first 14 weeks of a season all-time. Only 2012 (66) has more.
  • Kansas City quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES passed for 352 yards and three touchdowns while tight end TRAVIS KELCE registered 71 receiving yards in the Chiefs’ 34-28 win at Denver.

If Miami defeats the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football, the Chiefs can secure their seventh-consecutive AFC West division title, tying the 1973-79 LOS ANGELES RAMS for the second-longest streak of division titles in NFL history. Only the 2009-19 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (11 consecutive seasons) had a longer streak.

The Chiefs improved to 10-3 on the season and head coach ANDY REID became the third head coach in NFL history to record at least 10 regular-season wins in eight consecutive seasons, joining BILL BELICHICK (17 consecutive seasons from 2003-19) and GEORGE SEIFERT (eight consecutive seasons from 1989-96).

  • Jacksonville quarterback TREVOR LAWRENCE passed for 368 yards and totaled four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) while tight end EVAN ENGRAM had 11 receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 36-22 win at Tennessee.

Lawrence, who is 23 years and 66 days old, is the youngest player in NFL history with at least 350 passing yards, three touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown in a game, surpassing KYLER MURRAY (23 years and 79 days old on October 25, 2020).

Engram is the sixth tight end in NFL history with at least 10 receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns in a game, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers SHANNON SHARPE (October 6, 1996 and October 20, 2002) and KELLEN WINSLOW SR. Only CAM NEWTON (45 games), Pro Football Hall of Famer STEVE YOUNG (31) and AARON RODGERS (30) have more.

Allen has six rushing touchdowns in 2022 and is the first quarterback with at least six rushing touchdowns in five consecutive seasons in NFL history.
