44.1 Million Average Viewers Watched Thanksgiving Day Football, a 31 percent increase over the number initially reported

Nielsen custom survey reveals viewership impact of group settings, out-of-home viewership on Super Bowl-like moment for football fans

NEW YORK – December 13, 2022 – The National Football League (NFL) and Nielsen collaborated on a survey to complement Nielsen’s measurement data to provide a detailed picture of how many people may have watched NFL football on Thanksgiving Day, particularly in group settings. Based on the survey* findings, each game reached an average of more than 20 million additional viewers, raising the average-minute audience to 44.1 million, a 31% increase from the 33.6 million initially reported.

The results showcase the unique nature of Thanksgiving Day football, which for football fans has become intrinsically intertwined with a national holiday that brings families and friends together for a day of appreciation and gratitude. Many watch in larger-than-normal group settings such as an extended family member or friend’s home, bar, or restaurant.

With three games spread across the entire day, the opportunity to catch the games while preparing the big meal, visiting multiple households on the same afternoon, or perhaps even after the neighborhood’s touch-football game provides fans ample chance to catch NFL action.

“Quantifying the exact number of people watching NFL games on Thanksgiving presents additional challenges due to the fact that so many people gather in different group settings with family and friends,” said Paul Ballew, Chief Data and Analytics Officer of the NFL. “As was the case with our study around the Super Bowl, we feel this Nielsen custom survey helps provide a more complete picture of the total viewership for this unique day on the NFL calendar.”

Nielsen measures out-of-home in locations – such as bars and restaurants – across about 65% of the United States and its co-viewing measurement covers groups of up to 16 people in households across the entire country.

“The tradition of family gatherings and NFL football on Thanksgiving Day is endemic to American culture,” said Jon Stainer, Nielsen Sports Managing Director for the Americas. “We’re honored to continue working with the NFL on this custom study to help them better understand the size and behaviors of group viewing parties outside our co-viewing measurement.”

The custom survey of 5,800 households, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago using the AmeriSpeak panel, examined the size of viewing groups at any location and to what extent those groups are larger than that which is measured today. This is the same study used when Nielsen announced an estimated 208-million-plus viewers watched Super Bowl LVI via a custom study with the NFL.

Late last month, it was reported that the telecasts of the games were the most-watched NFL Thanksgiving Day on record. Cowboys-Giants was the most-watched regular-season NFL game of all-time, Lions-Bills broke a Thanksgiving Day early-window record, and Vikings-Patriots was the second-best Thanksgiving primetime game on record.

World Cup Preview: Croatia at Argentina

0

Argentina opened as the favorite at -200 on the moneyline with Croatia coming in as the underdog at +162. The total was set at 2.5 goals with the UNDER going 5-1 in Croatia’s last six matches. Argentina entered the tournament ranked No. 3 in the world, giving them a clear edge over 12th-ranked Croatia in our Argentina vs Croatia prediction.

Argentina Staves Off Dutch Comeback To Advance
It was a roller-coaster of a match but Argentina earned a 2-2 (4-3) win over Netherlands in penalties on Friday to secure a berth in the final four. After Nahuel Molina and Lionel Messi put Argentina up 2-0 through 73 minutes, it looked like they would cruise to victory, but Wout Weghorst scored in the 83rd minute and again in the 101st – virtually the last kick of regulation time – to tie the match. In penalties, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez stopped each of the first two shots he faced to help Argentina advance.

It marked the second straight match for Argentina that was decided by penalties, following their win over Japan in the Round of 16. While the Argentines will be pleased with their play through the first 80-plus minutes of the match, they’ve shown a trend of collapsing under pressure in this tournament that could come back to bite them at some point.

Croatia Shocks Brazil To Earn Semifinal Berth
Croatia stunned the soccer world on Friday by defeating Brazil 1-1 (4-2) in penalties to advance to the semifinals for the second straight World Cup. The match was scoreless through 90 minutes with Neymar finally breaking the ice for Brazil in added time of the first extra period. Bruno Petkovic scored the crucial tying goal in the 117th minute before Croatia came out on top in penalties.

The Croats have had a history of tight matches at the World Cup, with five of their last six knockout-stage games going to extra time. Croatia has generally come out on top of those games with eight wins in their last 10 knockout matches, including five straight dating back to the 2018 World Cup.

Argentina: Keys To Victory
Argentina should have the edge in the attacking third with players like Messi and Julian Alvarez providing plenty of scoring threat. While they’ve shown some chinks in their armor on the defensive side, Argentina could definitely take over the match with some magic from Messi or one of their other weapons up front.

Croatia: Keys To Victory
While Croatia hasn’t shown a ton of attacking flair in this World Cup, they also haven’t given up many goals – just three in five matches. If they’ve got any chance at upsetting Argentina, it’ll likely be down to some tight defensive play.

Argentina is 6-4-1 in its last 11 matches.
The UNDER is 6-4-1 in Argentina’s last 11 matches.
Croatia is 8-6-1 in its last 15 matches.

AFC COACHING STAFF

PEYTON MANNING (AFC head coach): The only player in NFL history to win five Most Valuable Player awards, Peyton Manning was selected to 14 Pro Bowls during his 17-year NFL career with Indianapolis (1998-2010) and Denver (2012-15), tied for the second-most Pro Bowl selections all-time. Originally the No. 1 overall selection in the 1998 NFL Draft, Manning ranks third all-time in passing yards (71,940) and touchdown passes (539) and he is one of two starting quarterbacks ever to lead multiple franchises to a Super Bowl title. He was named the Comeback Player of the Year in 2012 and set NFL single-season records for passing yards (5,477) and touchdown passes (55) during the 2013 season. Manning was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Broncos Ring of Fame in 2021 and in 2017, became the first Colts player to have his jersey retired since they moved to Indianapolis when he was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor.

RAY LEWIS (AFC defensive coordinator): A two-time Super Bowl champion, 12-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, Lewis was selected in the first round (No. 26 overall) in the 1996 NFL Draft by Baltimore, where he spent all 17 seasons of his NFL career (1996-2012). In 228 regular-season games, he totaled 1,568 tackles, 118 passes defensed, 41.5 sacks, 31 interceptions, 20 fumble recoveries and 19 forced fumbles. During the 2000 season, he earned his first Defensive Player of the Year award and was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player as the Ravens earned the Super Bowl XXXV title. In 2012, his final season, Lewis returned from injury and helped lead Baltimore to the Super Bowl XLVII title. In 2013, he was inducted into the Ravens Ring of Honor and in 2018, in his first year of eligibility, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

DIANA FLORES (AFC offensive coordinator): Diana Flores was the fourth youngest quarterback at The World Games in 2022 and she has been a member of the Mexico Women’s Flag National Team since 2014, beginning when she was just 16 years old. Diana has played for the 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2022 Mexico Women’s Flag National Teams and led Mexico to a 6-0 record and a gold medal at The World Games this year. In the gold medal game against the United States, she completed 20 of 28 pass attempts for 210 yards and four touchdowns in Mexico’s 39-6 victory. She finished with 23 touchdown passes at The World Games in 2022, the third-most among women’s teams. She was the only starting quarterback to beat U.S. quarterback Vanita Krouch (19-1) in international tournament play.

NFC COACHING STAFF

ELI MANNING (NFC head coach): A two-time Super Bowl champion, four-time Pro Bowl selection and the 2016 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year, Eli Manning spent his entire 16-season career with the New York Giants after entering the NFL as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. He ranks 10th in league history and holds the Giants franchise records in passing yards (57,023), touchdown passes (366) and completions (4,895). Manning started 210 consecutive games from 2004-2017, the third-longest streak of consecutive starts by a quarterback in NFL history. Manning led the Giants to Super Bowl XLII and XLVI titles and is one of five players in the Super Bowl era with multiple Super Bowl Most Valuable Player awards. He was inducted into the New York Giants Ring of Honor and had his jersey retired by the club during the 2021 season.

DEMARCUS WARE (NFC defensive coordinator): A nine-time Pro Bowl selection and Super Bowl champion, DeMarcus Ware was selected No. 11 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft by Dallas, where he spent the first nine years of his career (2005-13) before spending three seasons with Denver (2014-16). In 178 regular-season games, Ware totaled 657 tackles, 138.5 sacks, 127 tackles for loss, 35 forced fumbles and 25 passes defensed. A four-time first-team All-Pro selection, Ware led the NFL in sacks twice during his career (2008 and 2010) and he is one of six players since 1982 to record at least 10 sacks in seven consecutive seasons. He is the Cowboys’ all-time leader in sacks (117) and is one of three players since 1982 to record at least 19 sacks in multiple seasons. Ware recorded 7.5 sacks in eight career playoff games, including two sacks in Super Bowl 50 with Denver.

VANITA KROUCH (NFC offensive coordinator): Originally from Carrollton, Texas, Vanita Krouch has been the quarterback for the U.S. Woman’s Flag National Team since 2016 and played for the 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2022 U.S. Women’s Flag National Flag Teams. She was the oldest Flag football player (41) at the 2022 World Games (male or female). Vanita was inducted into the National Flag and Touch Football Hall Fame in 2016. She started playing Flag football per the urging of current U.S. Women’s coach Chris Lankford, and she’s played in men’s leagues with USA teammate Joann Overstreet. After college, she played semi-pro basketball, touring to different colleges for exhibition games, and coached both high school track & field and basketball. Her family, originally from Cambodia, migrated to the United States in November 1980 in wake of the Khmer Rouge genocide of 1970s. She is 19-1 as the United States’ starting quarterback in international tournaments since 2018 and she ranked second among women with 25 touchdown passes at The World Games in 2022.

THURSDAY NIGHT PREVIEW:

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (9-4) AT SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (7-6)

Week 15 of the 2022 NFL season gets underway on Thursday, December 15 (8:15 PM ET, Prime Video) as the San Francisco 49ers (9-4) visit the Seattle Seahawks (7-6) in a key NFC West showdown. The Seahawks hold the all-time regular-season series advantage, 29-18, and are 10-2 at home against the 49ers under head coach PETE CARROLL. San Francisco earned a 27-7 win over Seattle in Week 2 earlier this season as defensive lineman NICK BOSA registered two sacks, the 49ers’ first victory over the Seahawks since their dramatic Week 17 win to secure the NFC West division title in the final regular season game of the 2019 season. With a win, San Francisco can clinch the NFC West division title and reach the playoffs for the third time in the past four seasons.

The 49ers enter Week 15 with the NFL’s top ranked defense, allowing the fewest points per game (15.2), yards per game (286.8) and rushing yards per game (75.1) in the league. Bosa leads the NFL with 14.5 sacks this season and can become the fifth player since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, to record at least 15 sacks in two of his first four NFL seasons. He aims for his fourth in a row against Seattle with a sack. Linebacker FRED WARNER has 91 tackles in 2022 and can reach 100 tackles for the fifth-consecutive season since he entered the NFL in 2018. Linebacker DRE GREENLAW led the team and tied a career high with 15 tackles while defensive back JIMMIE WARD registered his fifth career forced fumble in Week 14. Both players aim for their fifth in a row with a pass defensed.

Last week, quarterback BROCK PURDY completed 16 of 21 pass attempts (76.2 percent) for two touchdowns with no interceptions for a 134.0 rating and became the first rookie in the Super Bowl era with at least two touchdown passes, one rushing touchdown and a passer rating of 125-or-higher in his first career start. Running back CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY totaled 153 scrimmage yards (119 rushing, 34 receiving) and his 11th-career game with both a rushing and receiving touchdown, tied for the fourth-most such games in NFL history. He aims for his third in a row against Seattle with at least 175 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns. McCaffrey has 425 career receptions and can surpass ROGER CRAIG (434) for the most receptions by a running back in his first six seasons in NFL history. Tight end GEORGE KITTLE reached 500 receiving yards on the season last week and became the fifth tight end in NFL history with at least 500 receiving yards in each of his first six seasons.

Seattle quarterback GENO SMITH had three touchdown passes in Week 14 and has at least two touchdown passes in seven consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL. He has career highs in completions (306), passing yards (3,433) and touchdown passes (25) in 2022 and leads the league this season with nine games with at least two touchdown passes and a passer rating of 100-or-higher. Wide receiver DK METCALF has 72 receptions for 869 yards and six touchdowns this season and can become the fifth player since 1970 to record at least 900 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions in each of his first four seasons. Wide receiver TYLER LOCKETT has 71 receptions for 896 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022, his fifth-consecutive season with at least eight touchdown receptions. On Thursday, he can become the first player since 2020 (DAVANTE ADAMS) with a touchdown catch in seven consecutive games.

Linebacker JORDYN BROOKS leads the NFC with 141 tackles in 2022 and has nine games with at least 10 tackles this season, tied for the most in the NFL. Linebacker CODY BARTON led Seattle with a career-high 15 tackles last week and aims for his fifth in a row with a pass defensed. Linebacker UCHENNA NWOSU has career highs in sacks (nine) and tackles for loss (nine) this season. Rookie cornerback TARIQ WOOLEN ranks tied for first in the NFL with six interceptions and has at least one pass defense in 11 of his 13 career games.

Prime Video will stream 15 Thursday Night Football games this season (Weeks 2-17, excluding Thanksgiving). The game will feature Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung on the call.

Contreras, 24, played his first full major league season in 2022 and batted .278/.354/.506 with 20 home runs and 45 RBI, and was named a starter for the N.L. All-Star team.

LATE-GAME DRAMATICS
− Nashville’s 4-3 OT win on Dec. 1 at New Jersey came in dramatic fashion.
− Mikael Granlund tied the game at 3-3 with 10 seconds remining in the third period, the third-latest game-tying goal in franchise history. It was also the third time in Predators history the team has tied a game with 10 seconds or less remaining in the third period and went on to win in overtime or a shootout; the last time was Feb. 27, 2020 vs. Calgary when Granlund tied the game with one second remaining and went on to score the OT winner.
− Additionally, Ryan Johansen opened the game’s scoring just 11 seconds into the first period. It tied the Predators record for fastest goal to begin a game (David Legwand – April 5, 2007 vs. St. Louis) and was the fastest goal to begin a road game in franchise history. Nashville became the fifth team in the past 24 years to score goals in the first 15 seconds and final 15 seconds of the game and first since Boston on Feb. 3, 2021.

HEAD COACH JOHN HYNES

− Roman Josi has 20 points (6g-14a) in his last 18 games after recording an assist on Saturday vs. Ottawa.

− He scored his seventh career overtime goal on Nov. 29 vs. Anaheim, tying him with Shea Weber for the third-most in franchise history.
− Tallying four assists on Nov. 17 vs. the NY Islanders, Josi notched the seventh four-point game of his NHL career, the most among active NHL defensemen. He led all NHL blueliners with four four-point games in 2021-22. In that same game, he became the ninth different defenseman in NHL history to record three assists in the first 10 minutes of a contest; he also became the fourth active blueliner to record three points in the opening 10 minutes of a game.
