Blue Bombers extend contract of long snapper Mike Benson

0

WINNIPEG, MB., – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed Canadian long-snapper Mike Benson to a two-year contract extension. He was scheduled to become a free agent in February.

Benson (5-11, 220; Acadia University; born: May 13, 1987, in Winnipeg, MB) returns to his hometown Blue Bombers in 2023 for a third season and 10th in the Canadian Football League.

Benson was the club’s long-snapper for all 18 regular season games in 2022 as well as the Western Final and 109th Grey Cup.

Benson first joined the Blue Bombers as a free agent in February of 2021 following a career that began in Edmonton in 2013 and then took him to the B.C. Lions, where he played from 2014-18, followed by a stop in Ottawa in 2019. He had signed with Montreal in 2020 but the cancellation of the CFL season that year made him a free agent again the following February.

A product of St. Paul’s High School and the Winnipeg Rifles program before he attended Acadia, Benson has now appeared in 121 regular season CFL games, the last 32 with the Blue Bombers.

TOP CAPS FACTS
The Great 8(00)

  • Alex Ovechkin scored his 18th, 19th and 20th goals of the season on Tuesday at Chicago to become the third player in NHL history to reach the 800-goal mark, joining Hall of Famers Gordie Howe (801) and Wayne Gretzky (894).
  • Ovechkin reached the 800-goal mark in his 1,305th career game, the second-fewest games required to reach the milestone in NHL history (Gretzky: 1,116 GP). Howe scored his 800th career goal in his 1,748th career game at the age of 51.
  • Ovechkin (currently at 161 GP) can require the fewest games between milestone goals No. 700 and No. 800 and become the first to make the jump in fewer than 200 contests (Wayne Gretzky: 231 GP from Jan. 3, 1991 to March 20, 1994; Gordie Howe: 256 GP from Dec. 4, 1968 to Feb. 29, 1980).*
  • Ovechkin went from 700 to 800 goals in 162 games, the fewest games required to make that leap for any member of the 800-goal club (Gretzky: 231 GP; Howe: 256 GP). It is tied for the third-fewest games Ovechkin has required to go from one 100-goal milestone to another in his career (100 to 200 goals: 130 GP; 600 to 700 goals: 155 GP; 300 to 400 goals: 162 GP).
  • Ovechkin’s 100 goals in 162 games since scoring his 700th career goal on Feb. 22, 2020, equates to a 0.62 goals-per-game average, slightly higher than his overall career average (0.61 G/GP). Gretzky’s goals-per-game rate from goal 700 to 800 was 0.44, while Howe’s was 0.39.
  • Ovechkin is now two goals shy of passing Howe (801) for second on the NHL’s all-time goals list.
  • Ovechkin scored his 787th career goal on Nov. 5 versus Arizona, passing Howe (786) for the most goals with one franchise in NHL history and scored his 122nd career game-winning goal on Oct. 24 at New Jersey to pass Howe for the second-most game-winning goals.
  • Ovechkin, who has scored 20 goals in 31 games this season, recorded his 29th career hat trick against Chicago to reach the 800-goal mark, passing Marcel Dionne and Bobby Hull (28) for the sixth most hat tricks in NHL history.
  • Ovechkin has reached the 20-goal mark in each of his 18 NHL seasons and his 18 20-goal seasons are the sixth-most in NHL history. Ovechkin is on pace to score 52 goals this season. Should Ovechkin reach the 50-goal mark, it would mark his 10th career 50-goal season, passing Gretzky and Mike Bossy (9) for the most in NHL history. In addition, Ovechkin would pass Gretzky (12) for the most 40-goal seasons in NHL history and tie Mike Gartner (17) for the most 30-goal seasons in NHL history.

Fowler recorded three straight multi-point efforts Nov. 15-19 (1-5=6), joining San Jose’s Erik Karlsson (four straight multi-point games, Oct. 27-Nov. 3; 7-4=11) as the only defensemen in the NHL with three or more consecutive multi-point outings. Fowler is one of four defensemen in Ducks history with multiple points in three consecutive games and the first since Scott Niedermayer in 2008-09.

GIBBY’S GAME: John Gibson ranks second among NHL goalies in saves (677), co-leads in appearances and starts. Gibson leads the NHL with nine games of 35-plus saves this season, three more than any other goaltender, while he co-leads the league with four 40-save performances (also WPG’s Connor Hellebuyck). Gibson was one of seven goalies the last 10 years with eight 35-plus save contests through the first 19 starts in a season, and is the only goalie to do so twice (also 2018-19). Gibson has recorded four 40-plus save games this season (Dec. 3 @ MIN, 45; Nov. 23 vs. NYR, 41; Nov. 6 vs. FLA, 43; Oct. 12 vs. SEA, 44), co-leading the NHL with Connor Hellebuyck (WPG). Gibson earned his fifth career helper, the primary assist, on Troy Terry’s OT winning goal Oct. 12 vs. SEA and tied J.S. Giguere for second in Ducks all-time goaltender assists with his sixth career helper Nov. 3 @ VAN. Gibson stopped his eighth career penalty shot (10th attempt) against Alexander Kerfoot Oct. 30 vs. TOR. He has stopped an NHL-leading six penalty shots since the start of 2020-21, with two goalies tied with three penalty shot saves (Connor Hellebuyck, WPG & Frederik Andersen, CAR/TOR).

M(A)C ATTACK: Rookie center Mason McTavish has picked up 4-10=14 points this season, and is tied for second among Anaheim leaders in PPG (2), tied for fourth in points and is fourth in assists. He currently ranks tied for seventh among NHL rookies in points and assists. McTavish recorded his 10th point Nov. 23 vs. NYR (3-7=10), with only Trevor Zegras (10 points in 15 GP in 2021-22) reaching the mark in fewer games the last 10 seasons. Among NHL rookies, McTavish ranks tied for fifth in scoring and sixth in assists (7). McTavish scored his first goal of 2022-23 Nov. 5 @ SJS (1-1=2), as part of his second career multi-point game (also Oct. 13, 2021 vs. WPG; 1-1=2).

QUE RICO!: Center Adam Henrique has 8-5=13 points his last 20 outings, while he ranks third among team leaders in goals (8) and fourth in scoring overall (8-6=14). He recorded points in a season-long six straight games Nov. 5-19 (5-3=8), his best as a Duck and one short of his career-long point streak set over 10 years ago in seven straight contests with New Jersey Nov. 25-Dec. 8, 2011 (2- 7=9). He scored goals in a season-best three straight games Nov. 5-12 (3-0=3, +3; missed Nov. 9 due to birth of first child), including his 100th goal as a Duck (100-90=190) Nov. 12 vs. CHI, becoming the 10th player in franchise history to reach the milestone.

NBA Preview: Phoenix Suns (16-12) at Los Angeles Clippers (17-13)

0

Out of sync, hobbled and staggering to the end of a four-game road trip, the Phoenix Suns will take their struggles to Los Angeles on Thursday night for a matchup with the Clippers.

The Suns have lost five consecutive games, including all three so far on the current trip that mercifully ends Thursday. Star guard Devin Booker has missed consecutive games with a tight left hamstring, Cameron Johnson remains out with a knee injury, and two more injuries cropped up during Tuesday’s 111-97 defeat to the Houston Rockets.

Phoenix’s Deandre Ayton (ankle) and Cameron Payne (foot) each went down in the first half, placing even more of the burden on others. Mikal Bridges tried to pick up the slack, but he ended up going 4 of 24 (16.7 percent) from the field and 2 of 10 from 3-point range.

The Suns shot 32 percent from the field as a team and 25.5 percent from distance, and were outrebounded 67-44, all against a nine-win team.

While the Suns closed November on a six-game winning streak, they are 1-6 in December. Booker and Ayton are both listed questionable for Thursday’s game, which would be a much-needed help. Payne will miss the game.

Those kind of days showed up early in the season for the Clippers, but the team’s prospects are far better since star Kawhi Leonard has returned following residual knee soreness from the surgery that kept him out last season.

The Clippers pulled off their best victory of the season when they took down the NBA-best Boston Celtics on Monday in their first game back from an East Coast road trip. They returned to the court Wednesday and looked worn down against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Los Angeles still managed a 99-88 victory over Minnesota, but did so despite shooting 26.5 percent in the first half. The Wolves had a 43-38 lead at the break with the 81 combined points the lowest in the first half of an NBA game this season.

The Clippers shot an impressive 52.5 percent in the second half, however, as Paul George delivered a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Leonard scored 19 points.

The Clippers were short-handed Wednesday without Norman Powell (groin) and John Wall (knee). Big man Ivica Zubac did not play in the second half because of left knee discomfort.

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (18-9) at Utah Jazz (16-14)

0

For years, a stifling defense was one of the Utah Jazz’s calling cards, which made sense considering they had a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year patrolling the paint.

If you ask Jazz coach Will Hardy, Utah’s recent performance against Zion Williamson and the red-hot New Orleans Pelicans could be considered its best defensive performance since the franchise traded defensive powerhouse Rudy Gobert to Minnesota this past offseason.

Whether the Jazz defense can stymie the Pelicans again will be an intriguing aspect of the teams’ turnaround rematch Thursday in Salt Lake City.

In their 121-100 blowout win over the Pelicans on Tuesday, the Jazz held New Orleans — previously the league’s third-ranked scoring offense — to its second-lowest scoring total of the season. The visitors, who saw their seven-game winning streak get snapped, only shot 39.8 percent overall and made only 4 of 27 3-point tries.

And because of foul problems, Williamson may have scored 26 points — but he was held to just 26 minutes.

Utah’s offense was top notch, too. It helped that the Jazz were nearly at full strength after missing several key players for multiple games because of illness and injuries.

Malik Beasley topped six Utah scorers in double figures with 21 points. Lauri Markkanen returned from an illness to total 19 points and 11 rebounds, Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 19 points and six assists, and Jarred Vanderbilt amassed 18 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

New Orleans, which brought the best record in the Western Conference to Utah, will try to regroup and improve its 6-6 mark away from home.

Jonas Valanciunas had a solid game for the Pelicans, scoring 15 points with six rebounds and two steals. He was the only New Orleans starter with a positive plus-minus as the Pelicans outscored the Jazz by five during his 19 minutes played.

Green was disappointed that the Pelicans allowed the Jazz to essentially wrap the game up in the third quarter. Utah took a 20-point lead into the fourth after Jordan Clarkson capped an 8-0 run with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (20-7) at Memphis Grizzlies (18-9)

0

After toppling NBA champs, Bucks visit Grizzlies

Following a rout of the defending champion Golden State Warriors, the Milwaukee Bucks will be riding a high when they pay a visit to the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night.

Milwaukee cruised to a 128-111 victory over the Warriors on Tuesday, getting 30 points, 12 rebounds and five assists from star Giannis Antetokounmpo in the process. Bobby Portis added 25 points and 11 rebounds off the bench to record his 16th double-double.

With his 30-minute performance, Antetokounmpo became the franchise leader in minutes played with 22,113. Currently in his 10th season with the Bucks, he passed Hall of Famer Bob Dandridge (22,094).

On a night with so many positives, perhaps none were more encouraging than Khris Middleton’s 20-point performance. Middleton had missed the first 20 games of the season after getting wrist surgery in July and had gotten off to a bit of a rocky start.

But on Tuesday, he showed flashes that he could be returning to form.

Antetokounmpo will now look to continue stretching the record and Middleton will try to continue working toward his All-Star form against a Memphis team that has caught fire.

The Grizzlies have won six straight and eight of their last nine, and have done so thanks in large part to some surprising contributors, such as Tyus Jones.

In Memphis’ most recent meeting — a 128-103 drubbing of the Atlanta Hawks on Monday — it was Jones who led the way, scoring 22 points to pace seven scorers in double figures. He also added a season-high 11 assists in addition to nabbing three steals.

With Ja Morant (thigh) and Steven Adams (ankle) out, Jaren Jackson Jr. also stepped up, especially on the defensive end, as he tied a franchise record with eight blocks to go along with 15 points and seven boards.

Jackson will be instrumental in Memphis’ effort to stop Antetokounmpo, as will Adams, who is expected to return Thursday. Morant will also likely be back in the lineup.

Although it’s a cross-conference matchup, the meeting with the Bucks will have a little extra meaning for Jenkins, who was an assistant under Milwaukee head coach Mike Budenholzer during Budenholzer’s time with the Hawks.

After spending five years in Atlanta, Jenkins followed Budenholzer to Milwaukee, serving as an assistant for one season before taking over as head coach in Memphis.

Thursday marks the first meeting between the teams after they split a pair of games last season. Neither team has won back-to-back games in the all-time series since Milwaukee did so in 2019.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (14-15) at Houston Rockets (9-18)

0

The Houston Rockets will need many more defensive performances similar to their two most recent efforts in order to climb from the bottom five in the NBA in defensive rating, but the results produced against the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns are nonetheless noteworthy.

Houston extended its homecourt winning streak to five games with its 111-97 victory over the Suns on Tuesday, marking the second time this season the Rockets have held consecutive opponents below 100 points following their 97-92 home triumph over the Bucks on Sunday.

The Rockets will look to extend their homecourt winning streak, and their stretch of tenacious defensive efforts, on Thursday when they host the Miami Heat.

Even with their back-to-back sterling defensive showcases, the Rockets (9-18) concluded Tuesday ranked 27th in defensive rating according to NBA.com, allowing 114.8 points per 100 possessions. And with the second-youngest roster in the league, it is easy to draw the conclusion that the youthful Rockets’ focus might skew toward the offensive end of the court.

But after smothering the Bucks into 36.7-percent shooting, including limiting Milwaukee to 12-of-43 shooting from behind the arc, the Rockets held Phoenix to 32 percent — the Suns’ lowest shooting percentage since Oct. 18, 2017, against the Portland Trail Blazers. For a team with a woeful defensive reputation, the Rockets have shown of late their potential when fully committed.

Miami guard Tyler Herro drilled a 19-foot pullup jumper with 4.9 seconds left to give the Heat a 110-108 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, providing Miami with its first set of consecutive road wins this season. The stop in Houston will mark the third of a four-game road trip for the Heat with the finale coming on Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Heat played without their leading scorer Jimmy Butler (knee) against the Thunder. Herro more than made up for his absence, pacing six players in double figures by matching his career high of 35 points while hitting a career-best nine 3-pointers and logging 40 minutes.

Bam Adebayo (15 points, 13 rebounds) added a double-double while Duncan Robinson and Victor Oladipo each scored in double figures in combining for 26 points on 8-for-16 shooting off the bench, a role typically reserved for Herro. But with Butler sidelined, Herro filled the void in the starting lineup with aplomb as Miami moved to within one game of .500 on the season at 14-15.

NHL Morning Skate – Dec. 15, 2022

0

* Just two nights after becoming the third player to join the NHL’s exclusive 800-goal club, Alex Ovechkin will look to match one of its members for second place on the League’s all-time goals list Thursday.

Bo Horvat and Conor Garland scored two goals in the first 1:48, while Spencer Martin made 35 saves to help the Canucks earn their ninth comeback win of the season.

Brady Tkachuk posted a two-point performance and Shane Pinto inched closer to the rookie lead in goals as Ottawa held on for a win against Montreal at Canadian Tire Centre.

OVECHKIN HONING IN ON HOWE DURING THURSDAY SLATE
Fresh off his 29th career hat trick and 800th NHL goal, Alex Ovechkin (800-644—1,444 in 1,305 GP) looks to find the back of the net for the fifth straight game and tie Gordie Howe (801-1,049—1,850 in 1,767 GP) for second place on the League’s all-time list.

* Howe, while appearing as a member of the Whalers, scored his 801st and final NHL goal against the Red Wings on April 6, 1980 – a franchise he spent 25 of his 26 seasons with. During his time with Detroit, Mr. Hockey played alongside Andre Pronovost from 1962-63 to 1964-65 – who assisted on five of the former’s 801 goals and is the grandfather of Anthony Mantha, who collected the primary helper on Ovechkin’s 800th career tally.

* Mantha’s ties to Howe and the Red Wings run deeper than just Pronovost after the franchise selected the now-Capitals forward in the 2013 NHL Draft (No. 20). Click here to read more about how Mantha’s assist connected Ovechkin’s milestone to Howe, including his prediction prior to his captain’s memorable performance in Chicago.

* Should Ovechkin tie Howe on Thursday, it would be his 13th career goal streak of at least five games and within two of his longest (7 GP from Feb. 10 – March 8, 2006). Only three players in NHL history have recorded 13 or more streaks of at least that length during their careers: Mario Lemieux (17x), Wayne Gretzky (16x) and Mike Gartner (13x).

* The Capitals captain (37 years, 89 days) would also become just the seventh different player in NHL history to register a five-game goal streak at age 37 or older (age based off end of streak). While a 39-year-old Brett Hull holds the longest such stretch (7 GP in 2003-04), a 37-year-old Howe also accomplished the feat (5 GP in 1965-66).

Brady Tkachuk (1-1—2) factored on two of Ottawa’s goals – including the game winner – while Shane Pinto (1-0—1) found the back of the net to help the Senators halt a Canadiens comeback attempt and earn a win at Canadian Tire Centre.

Tkachuk recorded his 56th career multi-point game and tied Martin Havlat for the fifth most in Senators history by a player before age 24, trailing only Jason Spezza (69), Alexei Yashin (69), Marian Hossa (65) and Erik Karlsson (58).

* Pinto (10-4—14 in 29 GP) scored his 10th goal of the campaign, one back of Matty Beniers (11-12—23 in 28 GP) for the most among all rookies. Pinto will look to become the first Senators skater to lead all rookies in goals at a season’s end since Mike Hoffman (27 in 2014-15).

CANUCKS COME FROM BEHIND TO PUT OUT FLAMES
After jumping out to a quick lead courtesy of Bo Horvat and Conor Garland both scoring in the first 1:48 of the game, the Canucks were forced to rally after the Flames scored three straight goals, but Spencer Martin (35 saves) shut the door against Calgary in the shootout to help Vancouver complete its ninth comeback win of the season. The only team with more is Edmonton (10).

* Martin, who made his second-most saves in a game this season, earned his ninth victory in his 15th appearance of 2022-23 (9-3-1). Only two goaltenders have posted more through as many appearances in a campaign with the Canucks: Ryan Miller (12 in 2014-15) and Kirk McLean (10 in 1991-92).

* The Canucks extended their road win streak to six contests, tied for their third longest in franchise history (also 6 GP in 2006-07) behind only a nine-game stretch in 2010-11 and an eight-game run in 2003-04.
