GOLDEN KNIGHTS LAST GAME RECAP
December 13 – Vegas Golden Knights 6, Winnipeg Jets 5
The Vegas Golden Knights (21-9-1) used a three-goal third period to defeat the Winnipeg Jets (18-9-1), 6-5, on Tuesday night at Canada Life Centre. Vegas swept the season series against Winnipeg with its third win against the Jets in their final regular season meeting. Midway through the opening frame, Mark Scheifele tipped a shot past Adin Hill to give Winnipeg the 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Daniil Miromanov answered with his first NHL goal to tie the game for the visitors. With 1.6 seconds to play in the period, Mark Stone gave Vegas the lead as he scored for the second game in the row. After Morgan Barron knotted the game back up, Stone scored again to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 edge. Sam Gagner added a goal before the break as the teams entered the final frame level at 3-3. Scheifele’s second of the game gave the Jets a 4-3 lead, but Jonathan Marchessault answered on a powerplay midway through the period and brought the game back to even once again. Marchessault scored another power-play goal with 2:16 to go and William Karlsson tacked on an empty-net goal as the Golden Knights went up, 6-4. Scheifele completed the hat trick with one second left and Vegas claimed the 6-5 win.

LAST GAME BY THE NUMBERS

  • Stone’s multi-goal performance helps him reach his 500th career point
  • Miromanov’s first career tally and two helpers marks his first multi-point game of his career
  • Marchessault’s two PPGs makes him the second Golden Knight to do it in a single period
  • Chandler Stephenson’s four assists matches the VGK road record and his career high
  • Hill wins his third game over Winnipeg this season, stopping 29 of 34 shots, and extends his current win streak to three games
  • Vegas improves to 21-9-1 on the season and 13-2-1 away from home, the best road record in the NHL

Easy Steph-y
Chandler Stephenson’s four assists in Winnipeg on Tuesday night ties his career high and the road record for VGK (last Stone 2/23/20). Stephenson has five assists in Vegas’ last two games and leads in helpers with 21 on the season (T-10th for NHL forwards). The forward is second in overall points on the team with 27 through 31 games, including three game-winning goals. Stephenson’s 62.1 faceoff win percentage ranks 10th in the NHL among all qualified skaters.

Aye-Aye Captain
Mark Stone reached the 500 point milestone on Tuesday when he tallied two goals in Winnipeg. It took Stone 572 games to reach the feat with 191 goals and 309 assists to total the 500 mark. Stone’s multi-goal performance against the Jets was his second of the season and he has now scored three goals in Vegas’ last two games. The Vegas captain has seven points in his last 10 games (4-3—7). Stone’s 12 goals are just two off the team lead of 14, and he ranks third in scoring for Vegas on the season.

Heating Up
Jonathan Marchessault scored back-to-back power play goals against the Jets on Tuesday to give Vegas the third period lead. Marchessault’s power play goals mark the fifth time a VGK player has scored two in a game; he is the only player to have done it twice with the club (last 2/13/20). Both of Marchessault’s goals came in the third period, making him the second Golden Knight to have two man-up tallies in the same period (Paul Stastny 10/13/19). The forward now has six goals in six games, coming off a four game goal streak (Dec. 3-9) that ended on Sunday in a 3-1 decision to Boston. This was the first time of his career that Marchessault had a four-game goal streak. Marchessault has taken the lead in goals scored on the season with 14 for Vegas.

Miromanov Breaks the Ice
In his 17th career game, Daniil Miromanov potted his first ever NHL goal and posted his first multi-point game. Miromanov got the scoring started for the Golden Knights in Winnipeg to level the score to 1-1. He then went on to be the primary assist on both of Marchessault’s powerplay goals to tie the franchise record for points in a game by a rookie. The defenseman had only recorded a singular assist in his previous 16 games for the Golden Knights over parts of two season. Miromanov had 13 points (6-7—13) in 17 games for the Henderson Silver Knights, Vegas’ AHL affiliate, before being called up on December 1.

Down to the Wire with Winnipeg
In the last two meetings between the Golden Knights and the Jets, there have been three goals that were scored in the final 10 seconds of a period or overtime. In Tuesday’s matchup, Mark Stone snuck a tally past Hellebuyck at the 19:58 mark of the first period. In the same contest, Mark Scheifele of Winnipeg forced one more goal before the end of regulation with one second remaining on the clock to bring the Jets within one. Finally, Jack Eichel netted the game-winner for Vegas against Winnipeg in the final seven seconds of overtime on October 30.

Comeback Kids
The Vegas Golden Knights completed their sixth comeback win of the season on Tuesday night, tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the most in the NHL this season. This also marks the second time that the Golden Knights have comeback to beat the Jets this season in back-to-back meetings. Vegas has outscored their opponents 36-35 in the third period, has won three in overtime, and has a .429 win percentage when trailing after the second period (leads NHL).

Road Trip Warriors
The VGK road record stands at 13-2-1, the best road record in the NHL. 27 of Vegas’ 43 points have come on the road, including the six points the Golden Knights brought home after going 3-1-0 as the visiting team earlier this month. In November, Vegas went 5-0-0 on the road, which saw scoring from 13 different Golden Knights. With their 13th win on enemy ice coming in Winnipeg, the Golden Knights will look for 14 in Chicago on Thursday night.

Cotter the Kid
Paul Cotter has recorded 25 hits in the last five games, leading all Golden Knights in that time. Cotter recorded a career high of six hits in the victory over the Boston Bruins on Dec. 5, when he also scored two goals. Cotter matched his best on December 7, logging another six hits against the New York Rangers, and then for a third time on Sunday against the Bruins at T-Mobile Arena.

Rookie of the Month
Logan Thompson has been strong in net for the Golden Knights and was named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for the month of November after going 8-2-0 with a 2.88 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage in 10 starts. On Vegas’ last road trip, Thompson defended the Golden Knights in two shootouts, allowing only one shootout goal and making 40+ saves in back-to-back starts. Thompson has stopped 86.2% of shootout attempts faced in his career (25-of-29); only Boston’s Linus Ullmark has a better shootout save percentage among active NHL goaltenders who have faced at least 20 attempts in their career.

Jack of all Trades
Despite having missed four games for the Golden Knights, Jack Eichel continues to lead Vegas in points 13-16—29. Eichel has points in 14 of his last 19 games for Vegas (10-12—22), including seven multiple-point efforts. His +17 rating is fourth among all skaters.

Martinez Block Party
Golden Knights defenseman Alec Martinez leads the NHL with 118 blocked shots in 31 games and is the first player in the league to reach the century mark this season. Martinez has led the team in blocked shots in 20 of 31 games.

The Shorty King
Reilly Smith netted his third shorthanded goal of the season against St. Louis on November 12. Smith leads the league with three shorties (tied with MIN Connor Dewar) and Vegas is tied for the second most shorthanded by a team with four. Smith’s 11 shorthanded goals since joining Vegas in 2017-18 are the most in franchise history.

Spreading the Wealth
Eight Golden Knights have recorded 20 or more points this season, which is the most of any team in the league. Jack Eichel leads the club with 29 points, followed by, Chandler Stephenson with 27 points and Jonathan Marchessault and Mark Stone with 24 points each.

Golden Knights Point Leaders

  1. Jack Eichel – 29 (13G, 16A)
  2. Chandler Stephenson – 27 (6G, 21A)
  3. Jonathan Marchessault – 24 (14G, 10A)
    Mark Stone – 24 (12G, 12A)

Against the Blackhawks
The Golden Knights’ matchup against the Blackhawks marks the second meeting of three this season. Vegas owns an all-time record of 10-2-1 against Chicago and the Golden Knights have never lost in regulation at the United Center. Vegas’ first loss in Chicago came in their last visit to the Windy City in a shootout. The Golden Knights first saw the Blachawks this season on Oct. 13 at T-Mobile Arena for Vegas’ home opener. Paul Cotter was the lone goal scorer of the game to give the Golden Knights the 1-0 win. Logan Thompson had a perfect performance when the goaltender saved 27-of-27 shots faced to post his first shutout of the season, and the second of his career. Reilly Smith leads the Golden Knights in career points against the Blackhawks with 15 points in 20 meetings, 8-7—15.

TEAM NOTES
SLEIGH’N 700
Head Coach Mike Sullivan appeared in his 700th NHL game as a head coach on Monday, as the Penguins took down the Stars, 2-1. The win was the 384th of his career (384-220-96).

‘TIS THE SEASON

Per NHL PR, this is the 19th time in his career that Sidney Crosby has been involved in a winning streak of at least six games – only eight players in NHL history have been a part of more: Nicklas Lidstrom (27x), Joe Thornton (23x), Marc-Andre Fleury (21x), Larry Robinson (21x), Joe Pavelski (20x), Chris Osgood (20x), Doug Jarvis (20x) and Don Marcotte (20x).

SIDNEY CLAUS
Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby has been nothing short of dominant all season, as he enters tonight’s game tied for eighth in the NHL with 38 points (17G-21A) in 29 games. Of his 38 points, 31 of them have come at even strength (15G-16A) which is first in the NHL, and he ranks in the top-20 in almost every major offensive category

KRIS-KRINGLE
Defenseman Kris Letang enters tonight’s game on the verge of becoming just the seventh player in franchise history to record 400 even-strength points:

Mario Lemieux 951
Sidney Crosby 919
Jaromir Jagr 743
Evgeni Malkin 720
Jean Pronovost 428
Rick Kehoe 419
Kris Letang 399

Letang is also looking to become just the third active defenseman along with Brent Burns (496) and Erik Karlsson (436) to accumulate 400 points at even strength. Only 22 blueliners in NHL history have accomplished this feat.

MERRY TRIST-MAS
Tristan Jarry enters tonight’s game having picked up points in each of his last 11 games (9-0-2), which is the longest point streak of his career. The last time a Penguins goalie had a longer point streak was Marc-Andre Fleury, who had points in 12-consecutive starts from Feb. 25-Mar. 20, 2009 (11-0-1). Jarry has been one of the hottest goalies in the NHL since Nov. 17:

Stat NHL Rank
Wins (9) 1st
GAA (1.88) 3rd
SV% (.941) 3rd

The Devils hit the ice for the second game of a three-game homestand that concludes on Sat., Dec. 17, vs Florida. Jersey’s team is winless in three consecutive games (0-2-1) for the first time this season. Prior to the streak, the last time the Devils suffered a loss in consecutive games was when the team opened the 2022-23 campaign vs Philadelphia and Detroit (Oct. 13-15). The Devils haven’t lost consecutive home games since Apr. 21, 2022, to Apr. 24, when the team dropped three consecutive games at home. After Tuesday’s loss, the Devils recorded less than two goals in a game (1-2-0) for the third time this season. The last time the Devils earned one goal in a game was Nov. 23, vs TOR (2-1, L). The Devils announced on Tue., Dec. 13 that the team loaned Mackenzie Blackwood to Utica for conditioning purposes. The last time that Blackwood played in a game for New Jersey’s AHL affiliate was on Feb. 22, 2019, with Binghamton. The team’s 21 wins after its first 29 games to open a season tied a franchise record for the most victories over that span: 2009-10, 21-7-1. The most wins after 30 games played to start a season in franchise history is 21 wins, which was earned in 2009-10 and 1997-98. The team’s +33 goal differential is also tied for first in franchise history, after 29 games played to start a season (1997-98). After the Rangers defeated Jersey’s team 4-3 in overtime on Monday, the Devils suffered their first road loss since the team’s season opener on Oct. 13, at Philadelphia (5-2, L). The loss ended the team’s franchise record of an 11-game road winning streak, while the NHL record was 12 games earned by Detroit in 2005-06 and Minnesota in 2014-15. Per NHL Pr, the Devils are the third team in NHL history that earned 10+ home and road wins through a team’s first 26 games of a season:

Boston: 1929-30
Chicago: 2012-13

Jersey’s team is 19-2-2 when scoring three-or-more goals in a contest this season. The team has lost consecutive games in regulation once this season, which dates to Jersey’s opening two games via Oct. 13 to 15. The Devils are 11-5-1 vs the Eastern Conference and 5-3-1 vs the Metropolitan Division. The Devils entered the month of December with a share of first place, or sole possession, atop the League standings for the first time in franchise history. Jersey’s team is 14-4-1 when scoring first this season, which ranks third (tied, DAL) behind Vegas (16-4-0) and Boston (16-0-0), as of Dec. 14. The Devils are 7-2-1 when trailing first this season, and the two regulation losses are tied for the fewest with Toronto (7-2- 3) for this matter. Jersey’s team is 18-1-2 when Nico Hischier recorded a point in a game this season and 10-1-1 when Jack Hughes scored a goal in a game for 2022-23. The Devils have allowed 1, or fewer, goals against nine times this season in a game. Jersey’s team allowed one, or fewer goals against, in a game just eight times all of last season.

Defensively, he made appearances at five different positions, playing 124 games at second base, 21 in right field, 16 in left field, four at shortstop, and two in center field. He ranked eighth among MLB second basemen with six outs above average, per Statcast. Frazier made his Postseason debut in 2022, appearing in five games for Seattle and tallying five hits with one double, three runs scored, one RBI, and one walk.

In 2021, Frazier was named to his first career All-Star team as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates after slashing .330/.397/.463 (115-for-348) with 26 doubles, four triples, four home runs, 53 runs scored, 29 RBI, 33 walks, and five stolen bases in 89 games prior to the All-Star Break. He ranked among Major League leaders in hits (8th) and average (10th).

A native of Athens, Ga., Frazier was selected by the Pirates in the sixth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Mississippi State University. He made his Major League debut with Pittsburgh on June 24, 2016. The left-handed batter is a career .273/.336/.392 (751-for-2,751) hitter with 149 doubles, 25 triples, 43 home runs, 374 runs scored, 257 RBI, 228 walks, 41 stolen bases, and a .728 OPS in 821 combined games with the Mariners (2022), Padres (2021), and Pirates (2016-21). A’s trade INF Yonny Hernandez to Dodgers for cash considerations

0

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s traded infielder Yonny Hernandez to the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash considerations, the club announced today. Hernandez was one of two players designated for assignment on Tuesday when the A’s signed Aledmys Díaz and Jace Peterson.

Hernandez was claimed off waivers by the A’s from the Diamondbacks on Nov. 3. He had three stints with the Diamondbacks in 2022 and went 2-for-24 (.083) with two walks in 12 games. The 24-year-old switch hitter combined for a .241 average, one home run, 31 RBI, and a .673 OPS in 71 games with Triple-A Round Rock in the Texas organization and Triple-A Reno. Hernandez made his Major League debut with the Rangers in 2021 and is a .198 hitter with six RBI and 13 stolen bases in 55 career games in the Majors.

Cubs agree to terms with RHP Brad Boxberger on a one-year Major League contract

0

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Brad Boxberger on a one-year major league contract with a mutual option for 2024. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Boxberger, 34, last season went 4-3 with 29 holds, one save and a 2.95 ERA (21 ER/64.0 IP) in a team-leading 70 games for Milwaukee. The 70 appearances were one shy of his career high, his 64.0 innings were just shy of his career-best 64.2 innings in both 2014 and 2021 and his 2.95 ERA was his lowest since 2014.  Boxberger did not allow an earned run in 55 of his 70 outings and surrendered one earned run or fewer in 65 appearances.  His 70 outings were third most among N.L. pitchers and his 55 games without allowing an earned run were tied for sixth-most in the N.L.

In 11 major league seasons with San Diego (2012-13), Tampa Bay (2014-17), Arizona (2018), Kansas City (2019), Miami (2020) and Milwaukee (2021-22), Boxberger owns a 31-37 record with 91 holds, 82 saves and a 3.44 ERA (175 ER/457.2 IP) with 564 strikeouts, a 1.27 WHIP and .215 opponent average in 484 games, all in relief. Among relief pitchers since 2012 (min. 450 IP), Boxberger is eighth in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (11.09) and strikeouts per batter faced (.291), and ninth in opponent average.

Boxberger spent the majority of the 2014 season in the majors for the first time in his career, appearing in 63 games for the Rays. He put up career-best numbers that season in ERA (2.37), strikeouts (104), strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched (14.47), WHIP (0.84), strikeouts per walk allowed (5.20) and tied a career high with 64.2 innings pitched (also 2021).

Boxberger was named to A.L. All-Star Team in 2015, and that season posted an A.L.-best 41 saves for Tampa Bay, good for fourth-most in the majors.

In his first season with the Brewers in 2021, Boxberger tied a career-high in innings pitched (64.2) spanning a career-high 71 outings.  His 83 strikeouts and 1.07 WHIP were the second-best single-season marks of his career, behind only his 2014 breakout campaign.

The five-foot 10-inch, Fullerton, Calif., native, was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Southern California.  Boxberger graduated from Foothill High School (Santa Ana, Calif.). His father, Rod, was selected by Houston in the first round of the 1978 draft and played six seasons in the Astros, Yankees and Angels farm systems.

Dodgers acquire Yonny Hernández

0

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired infielder Yonny Hernández from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for cash.

Hernández, 24, played in 12 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, following a trade with the Texas Rangers in April. The switch-hitter appeared in 10 games at third base and two at second base for Arizona and in his big league career has hit .198 with 13 stolen bases while playing shortstop, second base and third base in 55 career games with the Rangers (2021) and Diamondbacks (2022). In seven minor league seasons, primarily with the Rangers’ organization, the native of Venezuela has hit .262 with a .388 on-base percentage, 21 triples and 184 steals in 532 career games. He was originally signed by the Rangers as an amateur free agent on July 3, 2014. Hernández was claimed by Oakland last month and was designated for assignment by the A’s on Tuesday.

The Dodgers’ 40-man roster is now at 39 players.
