NBA Preview: Memphis Grizzlies (19-9) at Oklahoma City Thunder (11-18)

0

Dillon Brooks doesn’t lead the Memphis Grizzlies in any of the traditional defensive categories.

But Brooks’ defensive intensity has been among the major catalysts for the seven-game winning streak the Grizzlies carry into the game against the Thunder on Saturday in Oklahoma City.

In Memphis’ most recent game, a 142-101 throttling of Milwaukee on Thursday, Brooks was a major reason Bucks star Khris Middleton finished with more turnovers (four) than points (three), going just 1 of 12 from the field.

Ja Morant draws plenty of headlines, but Brooks has been one of the Grizzlies’ most important players.

Brooks figures to draw another tough assignment against the Thunder, when he will likely spend significant time guarding Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who comes into Saturday’s game averaging 31.2 points per game — third-best in the NBA.

In their last meeting, a 123-102 Grizzlies win on Dec. 7 in Memphis, Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 26 points but was held to a season-low 14 field-goal tries and hit just four field goals.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s career-high 19 free-throw tries helped salvage his night.

A Memphis win would make Jenkins the second-winningest coach in franchise history, breaking a tie with Dave Joerger, who won 147 games with the Grizzlies.

Saturday’s meeting is the third of four this season between the teams, and the first in Oklahoma City.

Saturday’s game is the first of a four-game road trip for the Grizzlies.

The Thunder will be playing the third game in a season-long seven-game homestand. They have dropped five consecutive games, including Friday’s 112-110 defeat by Minnesota — their second consecutive two-point loss.

Oklahoma City has played 19 games in “clutch” situations — games with a margin of five points or fewer in the final five minutes. Entering Saturday’s action, only the Heat and the Jazz have played more such games.

During the losing streak, the Thunder have allowed an average of 34 points per game in the second quarter.

Oklahoma City is 0-3 this season on the second night of a back-to-back.

The Thunder were without Darius Bazley (non-COVID illness), Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (right ankle sprain) and Kenrich Williams (right knee sprain) in Friday’s loss, while Luguentz Dort left the game late with a right hand sprain.

NBA Preview: Utah Jazz (17-14) at Milwaukee Bucks (20-8)

0

On a night when the Utah Jazz picked up a second consecutive win over the team that had the best record in the Western Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks had one of those games you would just rather forget.

Milwaukee fell behind Memphis by 15 points at the end of the first quarter, trailed by 29 at halftime, was outscored 47-30 in the third quarter and ended up getting blown away 142-101 by the Grizzlies on the road.

The Jazz will try to build on the momentum they gained with a pair of nice victories over the New Orleans Pelicans at home earlier this week and the Bucks will try to get back to their usual selves when the two teams meet up Saturday in Milwaukee.

The Bucks should be plenty rested. Budenholzer let his reserves play most of the second half after it was clear that a win just wasn’t in the cards. Giannis Antetokounmpo, who only played 26 minutes, and Bobby Portis led Milwaukee in scoring with 19 points apiece.

The combined results led to Memphis leapfrogging New Orleans atop the standings out West, while Milwaukee lost a bit of ground behind first-place Boston in the East.

The Jazz won a second straight game, escaping with a thrilling 132-129 overtime victory over the Pelicans on Thursday night.

Jordan Clarkson scored a season-high 39 points with seven 3-pointers and hauled in eight rebounds, while Lauri Markkanen netted 31 points.

Clarkson hit 15 of 26 shots to rebound from an 11-point outing on Tuesday.

Utah overcame a 13-point deficit to pull out the win.

This game against the Bucks begins what Utah’s team website billed as “a road trip reunion” for the Jazz, who face the clubs of three former players in the next three stops: Joe Ingles in Milwaukee, Donovan Mitchell in Cleveland and Bojan Bogdanovic in Detroit.

Ingles reportedly isn’t likely to play until next week after missing an extended amount of time with an ACL injury.

NBA Preview: Portland Trail Blazers (16-13) at Houston Rockets (9-19)

0

Improved Rockets look to regain winning form vs. Blazers

Surprising and sudden defensive prowess had fueled the Houston Rockets through a five-game homecourt winning streak, highlighted by consecutive victories over the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns earlier in the week.

Against the Miami Heat on Thursday, the Rockets proved unable to maintain that defensive momentum, falling 111-108 in the third game of a seven-game homestand that continues on Saturday against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Central to the Rockets’ struggles against the Heat was on-ball defense, namely against Tyler Herro and Jimmy Butler.

Herro poured in a career-high 41 points while sinking 10 3-pointers, also a career best. He torched several defenders in his wake. Butler finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and he added seven assists by routinely finding teammates in the corners after beating his defender off the dribble.

Houston will face a similar challenge against Portland and its guard tandem of Damian Lillard — who will enter the game 46 points shy of surpassing Hall of Fame guard Clyde Drexler atop the franchise career scoring list — and Anfernee Simons.

However, what should embolden Houston is the manner in which it competed against Miami down the stretch despite the sharpshooting of Herro and the all-around brilliance displayed by Butler, who also chipped in four steals.

Recent success seems to have bolstered the Rockets’ confidence, something that is apparent not only by the results but in how the Rockets go about playing no matter the deficit they have faced.

The Trail Blazers had won five of six prior to absorbing a 130-110 beating at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. Lillard scored 24 points but logged just 24 minutes as Portland trailed by 25 points entering the fourth quarter.

In the previous five games following his return from a prolonged injury absence, Lillard averaged 34.4 points on 52.9 percent shooting and 7.4 assists.

After Portland surrendered 79 points over the middle two periods in Dallas, Lillard didn’t get the chance to continue his torrid scoring stretch.

Not only will the Trail Blazers cap a back-to-back in Houston on Saturday, but they are also in the midst of a six-game, 10-day road trip. Including consecutive wins over the Minnesota Timberwolves prior to the trip, Portland will have played eight games in 14 days when they conclude their travels in Denver on Dec. 23.

Taking the arduous schedule and the late-game deficit into consideration, Portland coach Chauncey Billups was judicious in how he approached the final period against the Mavericks.

NBA Preview: Dallas Mavericks (15-14) at Cleveland Cavaliers (19-11)

0

The Cleveland Cavaliers aim to continue their success at home and complete a season sweep of the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday when the clubs meet for the second time in four days.

Cleveland salvaged a split of its two-game trek through Texas with a 105-90 win in Dallas on Wednesday before rallying from 13 points down to post a 118-112 victory over Indiana on Friday. The latter triumph in the opener of a season-high six-game homestand improved the Cavaliers to 13-2 at home.

Donovan Mitchell followed up his 34-point performance versus the Mavericks by scoring 18 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter against the Pacers. He drained eight 3-pointers on Friday night, marking the 11th time this season that he has made at least five in a game.

Mitchell drew rave reviews from Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic earlier in the week.

Darius Garland is pretty good in his own right. He collected 20 points and 10 assists on Friday, marking the fourth time this season that he has reached those totals in a game.

Evan Mobley has provided an interior presence for Cleveland. He has averaged 17 points and 10.3 rebounds over his last four games while making 26 of 45 shots from the floor.

Doncic did his fair share to make certain the Mavericks walked away with a victory on Friday. The three-time All-Star recorded 33 points, nine assists and six rebounds in Dallas’ 130-110 win over the visiting Portland Trail Blazers.

Doncic’s performance on Friday came two days after he scored 30 points versus Cleveland.

Christian Wood finished with a season-high 32 points and 12 rebounds off the bench on Friday, making 11 of 17 shots from the floor.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (15-15) at San Antonio Spurs (9-19)

0

The San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat will square off on Saturday afternoon in Mexico City in the NBA’s first game south of the border since 2019.

The game will be the league’s 31st contest in Mexico overall, which is more than any country outside the U.S. and Canada.

The Spurs have played six games in Mexico, most recently a 121-119 overtime win over Phoenix as part of the NBA Mexico City Games 2019. It will mark Miami’s second game ever in Mexico, with the other a 101-89 loss against the Brooklyn Nets in December 2017.

San Antonio got in a vigorous workout on Friday to acclimate to the higher elevation of Mexico’s capital city.

San Antonio defeated the Heat 115-111 in Miami on Dec. 10 in the first matchup of the year between the teams.

The Spurs head into the rematch off a 128-112 loss at home to Portland on Wednesday. San Antonio surrendered a season-high 73 points in the first half and never recovered, drawing as close as four points on two occasions in the third quarter before Portland put it away.

The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Spurs. San Antonio was led by Keldon Johnson’s 25 points while Doug McDermott added 14, Keita Bates-Diop and Devin Vassell scored 13 apiece, Josh Richardson hit for 11 and Tre Jones tallied 10.

The Spurs played without their starting and backup centers, Jakob Poeltl and Zach Collins — who missed the game with knee and ankle injuries, respectively — as well as key backup Romeo Langford (foot). Collins and Langford participated in practice on Friday.

Miami travels south of the border after back-to-back, down-to-the-wire wins on the road at Oklahoma City and Houston on Wednesday and Thursday.

Tyler Herro was the star in both, scoring 35 points with nine 3-pointers in OKC but going one better on Thursday, pouring in a career-high 41 while nailing a team-record-tying 10 shots from behind the arc in a 111-108 victory over the Rockets a night later.

Miami was up by 12 points with five minutes remaining but surrendered a 9-0 Houston run and survived when the Rockets missed a potential tying shot with 4.1 seconds to play.

Jimmy Butler added 20 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, four steals and three blocks while Caleb Martin scored 13 points as Miami won its third straight game.

The Heat played without starters Kyle Lowry (rest) and Bam Adebayo (left ankle sprain) as well as reserves Dewayne Dedmon (left foot plantar fasciitis), Nikola Jovic (back spasms) and Victor Oladipo (left knee injury management).

The NBA announced on Friday that the Heat were fined $25,000 for “violating league injury reporting rules” ahead of Wednesday’s road game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

NBA Preview: Washington Wizards (11-18) at Los Angeles Clippers (17-14)

0

The Los Angeles Clippers continue a five-game homestand Saturday with a matinee against a Washington Wizards side desperately seeking to stop a tailspin.

Washington limps into Los Angeles on an eight-game losing streak and losses in 11 of its last 12 games overall, including Wednesday’s opening contest in a grueling, six-game Western Conference road swing.

The Wizards dropped a 141-128 decision at Denver to kick off the road trip, which continues with back-to-back games Saturday and Sunday in Los Angeles.

In giving up a season-high scoring to the Nuggets, Washington dropped its third game in the last four by a double-digit-point margin.

Kristaps Porzingis — the Wizards’ second-leading scorer at 22.6 points per game, and top rebounder with 8.9 per game — missed Wednesday’s contest with back issues. He is listed as day-to-day.

Leading scorer Bradley Beal, averaging 22.9 points per game, also missed the Denver game while dealing with a day-to-day hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, Washington shot a dreadful 13 of 23 from the free-throw line in the loss.

Washington ranks in the lower-third of the NBA with a season-long average of 75.9 percent at the stripe.

Will Barton came off the bench in Denver for 22 points and nine assists, following an outing of 22 points and seven assists in Monday’s 112-100 loss to Brooklyn. Barton’s play is a bright spot for Washington amid the dismal stretch it will try to reverse against the Clippers.

Los Angeles comes into Saturday’s matchup off of a 111-95 loss to Phoenix, which snapped the Clippers’ three-game winning streak. Thursday’s outcome marked the first loss in Los Angeles’ homestand, which has two more dates left before the Clippers embark on a five-game, Eastern Conference road swing.

Terance Mann scored 22 points in the loss, stepping up with both Paul George and Kawhi Leonard out of the rotation.

Leonard’s absence was scheduled rest on the second night of a back-to-back. He finished with 19 points and eight rebounds in Wednesday’s 99-88 defeat of Minnesota, and 25 points with nine rebounds and six assists in a 20-point rout of NBA-leading Boston on Monday.

George missed Thursday’s game with knee soreness. Both of the former All-NBA selections could be available Saturday, but their ongoing struggles to return to full strength has been a battle for the Clippers to overcome.

That also includes reserve contributors Norman Powell and Luke Kennard. Powell last played on Nov. 29 due to a groin injury, while Kennard missed 10 of 11 games from mid-November into early December.

Kennard scored in double figures in three consecutive games, including a season-high 16 points Wednesday against Minnesota, before missing Thursday’s game with a calf injury.

Dodgers sign Noah Syndergaard

0

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Noah Syndergaard on a one-year deal for $13 million for the 2023 season.

Syndergaard, 30, spent the 2022 season with the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies, going a combined 10-10 with a 3.94 ERA (59 ER/134.2 IP) and 95 strikeouts in 25 games (24 starts). He made 15 starts for the Angels to start the season, going 5-8 with a 3.83 ERA before being traded to Philadelphia on August 2 in exchange for outfielders Jadiel Sanchez and Mickey Moniak.

He began his Major League career in New York, pitching six seasons for the Mets (2015-2021) and going a combined 47-31 with a 3.32 ERA (293 ER/718.0 IP) and 777 strikeouts in 121 games (120 starts). In 2015, he finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting and lead the Mets to the 2015 World Series. The Texas native made the All-Star team in 2016, going 14-9 with a 2.60 ERA (53 ER/183.2 IP) and 218 strikeouts in 31 games for the Mets, while finishing amongst the league leaders in ERA (3rd), strikeouts (T-4th) and FIP (1st, 2.29).

He was originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1st round (38th overall) of the 2010 First Year Player Draft out of Legacy High School (Mansfield, TX).

Mets sign five players to Minor League contracts

0

FLUSHING, N.Y.,  – The New York Mets announced today that the club has re-signed RHP Tommy Hunter to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training. RHP Jimmy Yacabonis, OF Abraham Almonte and INF José Peraza also signed minor league contracts with invitations to Major League Spring Training. Additionally, the club re-signed RHP Sean Reid-Foley to a minor league contract.

Hunter, 36, has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Mets and has pitched to a 1.78 ERA (six earned runs/30.1 innings) over 22 appearances (one start) during that span. He is one of eight pitchers in Mets history to allow six earned runs or fewer through their first 22 games with the franchise (Min. 25.0 innings). The 15-year veteran is 56-46 with 22 saves and a 4.00 ERA (397 ER/893.2 IP) in 494 major league games with seven clubs.

Yacabonis, 30, has posted a 6.03 ERA (79 ER/118.0 IP) in 71 games (13 starts) during his five-year Major League career with the Orioles, Mariners, Marlins and Rays. The Elizabeth, New Jersey native made 14 appearances (one start) combined with Miami and Tampa Bay last season.

Almonte, 33, began the 2022 season with the Brewers organization before he was acquired by the Red Sox on July 25. He batted .257 (9-37) with one home run and two RBI in 15 games with Boston. Prior to having his contract selected by Boston, the 5-10, 233-pounder slashed .293/.417/.534 with 18 home runs and 66 RBI across 80 games between Nashville (AAA) and Worcester (AAA) of the International League. A Dominican Republic native, Almonte has hit .235 (287-1221) with 24 home runs and 118 RBI over 455 major league games with seven clubs.

Peraza, 28, appeared in 71 International League games between Scranton/Wilkes Barre (AAA) and Worcester (AAA) last season. A Venezuela native, Peraza played in 64 games with the Mets in 2021 and sported a .993 OPS with runners in scoring position, while five of his six home runs that season gave the Mets the lead. Prior to joining the Mets, Peraza appeared in 554 games with the Dodgers (2015), Reds (2016-2019) and Red Sox (2020).

Reid-Foley, 27, has spent the last two seasons with the Mets and owns a record of 2-1 with a 5.28 ERA (18 ER/30.2 innings) in 19 career games with New York. In 2022, Reid-Foley made seven relief appearances before his season was cut short after undergoing Tommy John surgery on May 11 to repair a partially torn right UCL. Prior to joining the Mets, the 6-3, 230-pounder went 5-8 with a 4.40 ERA (35 ER/71.2 IP) in 21 games (13 starts) with the Blue Jays from 2018-2020.
