NBA Preview: Golden State Warriors (14-16) at Toronto Raptors (13-16)

0

One team will end a losing streak Sunday when the short-handed Golden State Warriors visit the Toronto Raptors.

The Warriors, who will be without Stephen Curry (partially dislocated left shoulder) for a few weeks, lost Friday to the host Philadelphia 76ers 118-106 for their third successive defeat.

The Warriors were also without Draymond Green (quadriceps) and Andrew Wiggins (thigh).

Meanwhile, Kyrie Irving made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer Friday to give the visiting Brooklyn Nets a 119-116 victory over the Raptors, who lost their fourth straight.

The Raptors were without O.G. Anunoby (hip) for the third consecutive game and Gary Trent Jr. (quadriceps) was a late scratch.

The Warriors did get some good news when Wiggins was cleared to return to practice on Thursday. He was injured while scoring 36 points against the Houston Rockets on Dec. 3.

This is the first meeting of the season between the teams who met in 2019 NBA Finals, won by Toronto.

The Warriors, the reigning NBA champions, will be playing the fourth game of a six-game trip. The Raptors will complete a three-game homestand.

Golden State led 57-55 at halftime in Philadelphia but was outscored 33-24 in the third quarter.

Jordan Poole led Golden State with 29 points on 10-for-20 shooting from the field.

Klay Thompson had 12 points on 4-for-17 shooting from the field.

The Raptors dropped to 10-5 at home after a second consecutive close loss. They lost 124-123 to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday.

Fred VanVleet scored 25 of his 39 points in the first half on Friday. He matched his season best in points set Wednesday.

Scottie Barnes scored 26 points and Pascal Siakam had 17 on Friday.

The Raptors led by 18 points late in the second quarter, but Brooklyn scored the final eight points of the first half.

NBA Preview: Brooklyn Nets (18-12) at Detroit Pistons (8-23)

0

The scorching Brooklyn Nets can complete the sweep of a four-game road trip with a victory over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday.

The Nets have won five straight games and nine of their last 10 games, although their most recent victory did not come easy.

Brooklyn needed a Kyrie Irving 3-pointer just before the final buzzer to defeat the Toronto Raptors 119-116. Irving had never previously drained a buzzer-beating game-winner in his career.

He wasn’t supposed to take the final shot. Coach Jacque Vaughn drew up a play for Kevin Durant, but Durant felt Irving had the hot hand.

Irving finished with 32 points, while Durant had 28. Brooklyn also got a boost from reserve forward Yuta Watanabe, who scored 17 points in 21 minutes.

The Nets also collected victories over Indiana and Washington during the current trip, in advance of the first of three meetings between the Nets and Pistons this season.

Detroit is coming off a 122-113 home loss to the Sacramento Kings. The Pistons led 63-55 at halftime but the Kings took control with a 17-2 run at the beginning of the second half. The Kings outscored Detroit 38-23 during the third quarter. The Pistons crept within three points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Detroit collected a 141-134 overtime road victory against Charlotte in its previous outing.

Bojan Bogdanovic led the Pistons with 22 points but shot just 6 of 16 from the field. Rookie center Jalen Duren had 15 points and 14 rebounds, including six boards on the offensive end. Duren has grabbed 12 or more rebounds in each of the last five games.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks (16-13) at Indiana Pacers (15-15)

0

It’s been almost a decade since the New York Knicks won consecutive playoff games.

But if everything goes as Tom Thibodeau hopes, the Knicks will rely in the spring on their experiences this week in Chicago.

The Knicks will look to continue surging Sunday afternoon, when they are slated to visit the Indiana Pacers in a battle of longtime Eastern Conference rivals.

Both teams were off Saturday after playing on the road Friday, when the Knicks rolled past the Chicago Bulls 114-91 and the Pacers squandered a double-digit fourth-quarter lead in a 118-112 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The win was the sixth straight for the Knicks, who extended their longest winning streak in two seasons by winning back-to-back games in Chicago. New York outlasted the Bulls 128-120 in overtime on Wednesday night.

Before Friday’s game, Thibodeau said the unusual set of games could serve as a playoff primer for a team with minimal postseason experience. A five-game loss to the Atlanta Hawks in an Eastern Conference first-round series in the spring of 2021 is the Knicks’ lone playoff appearance since 2013, when they beat the Boston Celtics in six games in the first round before falling to the Pacers in six games in the conference semifinals.

The Knicks won the first three games of the series against the Celtics in 2013, when the best-of-seven set opened in New York.

The Knicks did that over the final three periods Friday night, when they outscored the Bulls by 26 points. Afterward, Thibodeau preached another playoff philosophy when asked if he believed New York — whose winning streak is the second-longest in the NBA entering Saturday behind the Memphis Grizzlies’ seven-game run — was the Eastern Conference’s hottest team.

The Pacers endured that rollercoaster Friday against the Cavaliers, who are in the thick of the race for the top overall seed in the Eastern Conference. Indiana led for more than 27 straight minutes between the second and fourth quarters and held its biggest lead at 103-90 with nine minutes left before Donovan Mitchell sparked Cleveland’s comeback by scoring 16 points down the stretch, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:41 remaining.

The loss was the seventh in the last 10 games for the Pacers, whose last four defeats have been by six points or fewer against teams that are currently occupying a playoff or play-in spot. Indiana lost to the Brooklyn Nets 136-133 on Dec. 10 before falling to the Miami Heat 87-82 on Monday.

The loss Friday dropped the Pacers (15-15) into a three-way tie with the Heat and Atlanta Hawks for seventh in the East, 1 1/2 games behind the Knicks, who are in the final guaranteed playoff spot.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (10-20) at Boston Celtic (22-8)

0

The major storyline of Friday’s game between the Boston Celtics and the visiting Orlando Magic was the return of Robert Williams III.

Boston’s center had missed the first 29 games after undergoing knee surgery in September, and his season debut energized the home crowd before the game even began.

The night, however, belonged to Orlando as a 117-109 win spoiled the Celtics’ return from the West Coast for a seven-game homestand to finish off 2022.

The teams play the back end of a rare two-game series on Sunday afternoon in Boston as the Magic look to extend their five-game winning streak, their longest since 2020.

On Friday, Moe Wagner scored a season-high 25 points, younger brother Franz had 19, and Banchero contributed 20 for already the 18th 20-point game of his career.

The Magic shot 46.2 percent from the floor, had a 53-38 rebounding edge and registered 20 second-chance points to Boston’s six against the best offensive team in the NBA.

The Magic played Friday while significantly short-handed, but Wendell Carter Jr. (right plantar fascia strain), Gary Harris (strained right hamstring) and Chuma Okeke (left knee soreness) are all on the road trip.

Friday was just Orlando’s second road win of the season. The Magic are now 2-11 away from home.

The Celtics still have the league’s best record, but they are just 1-3 in their last four games. The major issue was not simply a tough offensive night.

Williams slammed down a couple of his signature dunks on the way to posting seven points and five rebounds.

The season-opening performance looked strong to Celtics interim head coach Joe Mazzulla.

The first pass from Marcus Smart leading to a slam eased Williams, which is good news for Celtics fans moving forward.

CFB: SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl Preview – Florida Gators (6-6) at Oregon State Beavers (9-3)

FLORIDA GATORS NOTES:

THE STORYLINE
• The 2022 SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl marks the first meeting between Florida and Oregon State on the gridiron.
• Florida is playing its first-ever football game in Nevada across the program’s 115-year history.
• The 2022 campaign represents the first time that Florida has faced two Pac-12 teams in the same season.
• Florida has an all-time record of 24-23 across 47 all-time bowl games dating back through 1953.
• The Gators are 8-4 in bowl games since 2009 and 10-5 dating back to 2006.
• This is Florida’s fifth-straight bowl appearance and eighth in the last-nine seasons.
• Oregon State will be UF’s seventh opponent this season ranked in the CFP Final Top 25 – tied for the most in the FBS.
• UF HC Billy Napier is 2-1 all-time in bowl games: 2018 Cure Bowl (L) – Tulane 41, Louisiana 24 | 2019-20 LendingTree Bowl (W) – Louisiana 27, Miami (OH) 17 | 2020 First Responder Bowl (W) – Louisiana 31, UTSA 24
• This is the first meeting between Coach Napier and OSU HC Jonathan Smith as head coaches.
• RB Trevor Etienne leads all true freshman FBS running backs with at least 100 carries in yards per carry (6.4) and is one of eight true freshman RBs in the FBS with over 700 rushing yards.
• The trio of RB Montrell Johnson Jr. (827), Etienne (705) and QB Anthony Richardson (654) became the third trio in UF history to eclipse 600 rush yards apiece in Week 12.
• The Gators’ 5.8 yards per carry ranks third in the FBS (behind UCLA and UAB).
• Florida’s 213.7 rushing yards/game ranks 16th in the FBS, 10th in the Power Five and third in the SEC.
• The Gators boast three of the top-12 rushers in the SEC in yards per carry: Etienne (sixth – 6.4), Richardson(seventh – 6.3) and Johnson Jr. (12th – 5.7). No other SEC team has three players in the top-17 (min. five attempts per game).
• Florida is one of two FBS teams (alongside Oregon) with three qualified players averaging over 5.5 yards per carry.
• G O’Cyrus Torrenceis the top-rated guard in the nation at 88.6, according to Pro Football Focus (has never allowed a sack).
• Florida boasts four come-from-behind wins this season (vs. No. 7 Utah, vs. USF, vs. EWU, at Texas A&M).
• Florida has scored in 435-consecutive games dating back to 1988 — an NCAA record and 56 games longer than any other college football team in the history of the sport.

FEATS TO WATCH FOR IN LAS VEGAS
• Florida’s 29 rushing TDs are the program’s fifth-most all-time in a season (2008 – 42, 2007 – 39, 2010 – 31, 2009 – 30).
• UF’s 213.7 rushing yards/game ranks 10th in team history. UF needs 150 yards to maintain 10th and 238 to move into ninth.
• Etienne needs 95 rush yards for Etienne and Johnson Jr. to become the first UF RB duo to eclipse 800 yards apiece.
• Johnson Jr. needs one rushing TD to move into a tie for 11th all-time in a single season at Florida (11) and two to move into a tie for ninth (12).
• DB Trey Dean III is one pass breakup away from tying Janoris Jenkins (2008-10) and Guss Scott (2000-03) for 10th all-time in a career at UF with 25.
• K Adam Mihalek would become the first UF kicker to hit four 50-yarders in a season with another successful attempt.

JOHNSON JR. + ETIENNE = ONE OF FBS’ TOP BACKFIELDS
• In their first seasons as Gators, RB Montrell Johnson Jr. (144 carries, 827 yards, 5.7 YPC, 10 TD) and RB Trevor Etienne (110 carries, 705 yards, 6.4 YPC, 6 TD) have been highly efficient leading UF’s running game.
• They are one of eight RB duos in the FBS to have rushed for over 700 yards apiece this season, and one of four FBS RB duos to do so while each rushing for over 5.5 YPC.
• The duo has combined for a touchdown in all 12 games, scoring 17 total TDs (rushing TDs in 11 of 12 games).
• The RB duo has combined for 46 of Florida’s 74 explosive rushes (10-plus yards) this season (62.2%).
• Johnson Jr. is one of 12 FBS RBs with back-to-back seasons with 10+ rushing TDs from 2021-22 and the only to do so at two different schools.
• Johnson Jr. is the first UF running back to rush for over 800 yards since La’Mical Perine in 2018.
• Etienne’s FBS ranks among true freshmen RBs: YPC (third – 6.4), TDs (T10th – six) and rush yards (eighth – 705).
• Etienne is coming off a career-high 129 yards rushing with one TD in Week 13 vs. FSU, marking his second 100- yard rushing game in the last three weeks as well as the second of his young career.
• Johnson Jr. posted back-to-back 100-yard rushing games in Weeks 10-11, including a career-high 161 yards vs. South Carolina in Week 11. He was the first UF RB with consecutive 100-yard games since Jordan Scarlett in 2016.
• In the last four games, the duo has combined for four 100-yard rushing performances, as Etienne hit 100 yards vs. South Carolina and at FSU, and Johnson did so at Texas A&M and vs. South Carolina
• Johnson Jr. and Etienne became Florida’s first pair of 100-yard rushers in 22 games (9/4/21 vs. FAU) in Week 11.
• Etienne’s 85-yard TD rush was in Week 11 was the seventh-longest TD rush in school history, and the longest by a UF player since Lamical Perine’s 88-yard TD run vs. Auburn in 2019. • WR Caleb Douglas made his first-career start vs. South Carolina, becoming the first true freshman to start at WR since Kadarius Toney (10/7/17 vs. LSU). Douglas led UF with three receptions and 53 yards in Week 11.
• Douglas’ 53 yards were the most by a UF WR in his first start since Josh Hammond’s 72 vs. North Texas (9/17/16).
• Henderson set a career high with 110 yards receiving vs. UGA (Oct. 29), notching the first 100-yard game of his career.
• QB Anthony Richardsonconnected with Henderson for a 78-yard touchdown pass vs. UGA in Week 9 – setting a new career passing long for Richardson and a new career receiving long for Henderson.

  • Against No. 15 Oregon, Ward set season-highs with 37 completions and 375 passing yards, rush TD
  • In win over Cal, threw for 343 yards and three TD (17, 37, 1) in win over Cal
  • Against No. 14 Utah, completed 27-of-32 passes, 87.0 comp. pct tied for 2nd-best in WSU history

THE BONES
• The 2022 Fresno State football team will go down in the history books as the team responsible for the best single-season turnaround in program history. The Bulldogs opened the season going 1-4, winning their season opener and losing the next four-in-a-row. Oct. 8 at Boise State was Fresno State’s last loss of the season. Since then, the Bulldogs have won eight-straight games – including a Mountain West
Championship title.

• Around the FBS, no team has ever had a 1-4 record through the first five games and flipped the script to have a 10-win season that year. With a chance at a 10-win season still ahead of it in 2022, Fresno State and Jeff Tedford have yet another chance to make FBS history.
• In the 101-year history of the program, Fresno State has had 12 double-digit winning seasons, with its last one (10-3) being just a year ago in 2021.

• With a 10-win season in 2022, Tedford would have the second-most 10-win seasons as head coach at Fresno State. Jim Sweeney (1976-96) has the most among all Bulldog head coaches with five 10-win seasons in his tenure.

• In six games since his return from injury, quarterback Jake Haener has played arguably the best and most-accurate football of his career.

• In his last six games, Haener has completed 153-of-209 pass attempts, throwing just two interceptions to 14 touchdowns. The senior QB has totaled 1,762 yards in that span, tossing a 300-yard game in the first four performances since his return. He is passing at a 75 percent clip since Oct. 29.

• Fresno State senior quarterback Jake Haener accepted an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl following the conclusion of the Mountain West Championship Game on Dec. 3.

• For the first time since 2014, Fresno State has had a rusher and a receiver have 1,000 yards in their respective categories. Jordan Mims (RB) and Jalen Moreno-Cropper (WR) became the first duo since Marteze Waller (RB) and Josh Harper (WR) to do it together in a Bulldog uniform.

• Lockridge was named the MW Championship Game Defensive MVP after two key interceptions, that turned to points for the Bulldogs. Lockridge, a first-year Bulldog and a transfer from Hawai’i, is the leading tackler among all Bulldog cornerbacks. He has 36 tackles (24 solo) and 2.0 tackles for loss. Most impressively, Lockridge leads the team with five interceptions, returned for 100 yards with one returned for a touchdown. He adds nine broken up passes on the year.

• With five interceptions this season, Lockridge has the most picks in a single season by a Bulldog since Derron Smith had seven in 2013. Lockridge returned an interception for a touchdown against his former team Hawai’i (Nov. 5). It was the first time Fresno State had an INT returned for a TD since 2019.

• Fresno State’s special teams unit has improved from the 48th best special teams unit in 2021 to the 10th best in 2022 (according to FootballOutsiders.com).

• Fresno State leads the FBS in punt returns. In addition to punt returns, Fresno State is Top 20 in the FBS in blocked kicks (No. 19) and blocked punts (No. 13). The Bulldogs are No. 22 in the FBS in kickoff returns.

IF THE ‘DOGS WIN
• Fresno State would win its 10th game of the season, marking the program’s 12th 10-win season in program history.

• Fresno State would extend its winning streak to nine-straight games.

• Fresno State would become the first team in the FBS to start the season 1-4, and earn 10 wins in the same season.

• Fresno State would pick up its 31st bowl game victory all-time.

• Fresno State would win its fourth-straight bowl game.

• Fresno State would earn its first victory over a Pac-12 opponent this season.

THE COUGARS
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE
Washington State finished the regular season with a 7-5 overall record, and a 4-5 record in Pac-12 play. The Cougars opened the season with three-straight wins, defeating Idaho, then-No. 19 Wisconsin, and Colorado State to kickoff 2022. Washington State’s first loss of the season was a narrow 44-41 high-scoring affair at then-No. 15 Oregon on Sept. 24. Ten Washington State football players earned 2022 All-Pac-12 Conference honors, including linebacker Daiyan Henley, a transfer from MW foe Nevada, who earned first-team honors. Henley was named to the first team and also to the second team as an all-purpose/special teams player while edge’s Ron Stone Jr. and Brennan Jackson joined Henley on the second team. Seven players earned honorable mention; punt returner Robert Ferrel, punter Nick Haberer, left tackle Jarrett Kingston, defensive back Armani Marsh, cornerback Chau Smith-Wade, quarterback Cameron Ward and running back Nakia Watson. Washington State is coached by first-year head coach Jake Dickert. He was named head coach of the program on Nov. 27, 2021. Dickert spent the final five games of the regular season in 2021 serving as the Cougar’s acting head coach, leading WSU to a 3-2 record with wins over Arizona State, Arizona and a dominating 40-13 Apple Cup victory in Seattle before WSU earned a trip to the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl. The Apple Cup win snapped a seven-game skid to Washington and was WSU’s largest margin of victory in series history. Entering the 2021 season, Dickert was in his second year as WSU’s defensive coordinator and lineback- ers coach.

SERIES HISTORY WITH THE COUGARS
Fresno State and Washington State have met four times prior to Saturday’s matchup, but the last meeting was in 1994. Washington State leads the series, 3-1. The lone Fresno State victory was a 34-30 win on Sept. 14, 1991. The first meeting between the teams was in 1987.
The teams have never met in a neutral setting.

MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPS!
Fresno State won its fourth Mountain West Championship with a 28-16 win over Boise State on the road on Dec. 3, 2022. With the win over Boise State, the Bulldogs claimed their second MW title in five years and their second under head coach Jeff Tedford (2018 & 2022). Fresno State has won just three contests against Boise State on their home turf. Two of those wins were the 2018 and 2022 championship games, the third being in 1984. Fresno State has won the Mountain West Championship title now in 2012, 2013, 2018, and 2022.

GOT THAT REDEMPTION
Fresno State went into the championship game week with a chip on its shoulder, game-planning for an opponent in Boise State that it lost 40-20 to on the road on Oct. 8. That game in October saw a Fresno State team that was plagued with injuries, playing without starters Jake Haener (QB), Evan Williams (DB) and Cam Lockridge (DB). The Bulldogs were a different team heading into the Dec. 3 matchup for the title as all three starters were active, and turned into key players for the championship win.

FRESNO STATE VS THE PAC-12
Fresno State is 28-48 all-time against current members of the Pac-12. The Bulldogs faced Pac-12 opponents in back-to-back weeks earlier this year, first hosting Oregon State on Sept. 10 before traveling to then-No. 7 USC for a Sept. 17 matchup. It was the first time since 2014 that the ‘Dogs have had two Pac-12 opponents lined up in a row. That season, the ‘Dogs opened the year at then-No. 15 USC and traveled to Utah for Week 2. With Fresno State playing Washington State this weekend, it will be the first time that Fresno State has faced three Pac-12 teams in one season.

• Six players on the current roster had previous stops at a Pac-12 school – three on both sides of the ball.

TALK ABOUT A TURNAROUND
The 2022 Fresno State football team will go down in the history books as the team responsible for the best single-season turnaround in program history. The Bulldogs opened the season going 1-4, winning their season opener and losing the next four-in-a-row. Oct. 8 at Boise State was Fresno State’s last loss of the season. Since then, the Bulldogs have won eight-straight games – including a Mountain West Championship title.
Around the FBS, no team has ever had a 1-4 record through the first five games and flipped the script to have a 10-win season that year. With a chance at a 10-win season still ahead of it in 2022, Fresno State and Jeff Tedford have yet another chance to make FBS history.

10 WIN SEASONS
In the 101-year history of the program, Fresno State has had 12 double-digit winning seasons, with its last one (10-3) being just a year ago in 2021. Fresno State has had double-digit win seasons in back-to-back years on two occasions – 1988 and 1989, and 2017 and 2018. Head coach Jeff Tedford is responsible for both the 2017 and 2018 seasons, with the chance at coaching the Bulldogs to their third 10-win season under him in four years as the head coach. With a 10-win season in 2022, Tedford would have the second-most 10-win seasons as head coach at Fresno State. Jim Sweeney (1976-96) has the most among all Bulldog head coaches with five 10-win seasons in his tenure. Tedford is responsible for coaching the winningest season in program history as he led Fresno State to a 12-2 record in 2018 (MW Champions and Las Vegas Bowl Champions).

WEST DIVISION CHAMPS!
With its 41-14 win at Nevada on Nov. 19, Fresno State clinched its West Division title and a berth to the Mountain West Championship Game. With its West Division title now secure, Fresno State has officially won the most West Division titles among all schools in the division. The Bulldogs have won their division in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018 and now in 2022. Fresno State was picked to win the west division by the media, receiving 20 first place votes in the 2022 predicted order of finish from July.

WE’RE BOWLING
Fresno State’s win against Hawai’i (Nov. 5) meant that the team earned bowl eligibility. Fresno State is eligible for a postseason bowl game for the second time in as many seasons, marking the first time since 2017 and 2018 that Fresno State has made a bowl game in back to back seasons. With a bowl game appearance this year, Fresno State would play in its 31st bowl game. Last season, the Bulldogs played in the PUBG Mobile New Mexico Bowl, and defeated UTEP 31-24. The Bulldogs were led offensively by running back Jordan Mims who finished with 165 yards rushing and two touchdowns, with an additional 71 yards and one touchdown receiving. Mims was named the bowl game’s offensive most valuable
player. Defensively, Elijah Gates was named the game’s defensive most valuable player with seven tackles and an interception.

BACKGROUND ON THE JIMMY KIMMEL LA BOWL
In June 2021, SoFi Stadium and Jimmy Kimmel entered into an unprecedented multi-year partnership to appoint the late-night host the official naming rights partner of LA Bowl, renaming the inaugural collegiate bowl game the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. Held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl will feature Mountain West’s No. 1 selection versus Pac-12’s No. 5 selection. “Stan Kroenke designed Hollywood Park to be a sports and entertainment destination for Angelenos and visitors from across the world to enjoy. We cannot think of a better way to bring sports and entertainment together than by collaborating with celebrated late-night host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel on our collegiate bowl game,” said Jason Gannon, executive director, Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. “Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl will not only bring an incredible game day experience to fans, but it will also focus on supporting our community 365 days a year.” “Never before has a bowl game been named after a human being (as far as I know, I didn’t check). On December 18 [2021], my dream of being forever enshrined alongside orange, rose, cotton and peach comes true,” said Jimmy Kimmel. The bowl game is committed to working with Inglewood’s One For All to support youth through social programs that emphasize the importance of personal growth and community involvement. Similarly, Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl will continue to work with the Boys and Girls Clubs of LA Harbor and LA Metro by helping to end food insecurity in those communities. The 2021 version of the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl was the first collegiate football game at SoFi Stadium. Celebrating the legacy of college football in Los Angeles through extraordinary game-day experiences that focus on premium hospitality, Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl will bring the diverse community of Los Angeles together, and with its partners, will create a number of immersive events and activities leading up to and on game day.

BIT BY THE INJURY BUG
It has been a tough go for the Bulldogs this season as it seems like everything is going against the program in every way possible. At USC on Sept. 17, the Bulldogs lost significant production to injury of key players. Since that week, Fresno State has not caught a break with the caliber of players that are suffering injuries this season, seeing players out for games on a weekto-week basis, or other players suiting up for limited action in games.

NHL Morning Skate – Dec. 17, 2022

0

* Will The Great Eight tie Mr. Hockey on the NHL’s all-time goals list Saturday? Alex Ovechkin, who sits one back of Gordie Howe, has tallied eight times in head-to-head games with Auston Matthews but will be facing a familiar face who enters the contest with two straight shutouts.

* Saturday’s slate is set to feature several other games involving noteworthy players including this season’s first head-to-head contest between Connor McDavid and Trevor Zegras, who are likely to find themselves on numerous “Plays of the Year” reels as 2022 comes to a close.

* Wild forward Mats Zuccarello, Coyotes forward Clayton Keller and Blues forward Jordan Kyrou each scored multiple goals in wins Friday.

SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTED BY OVECHKIN VS. MATTHEWS ON HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA

Saturday’s 13-game slate is highlighted by the 15th regular-season meeting between the NHL’s newest member of the 800-goal club Alex Ovechkin and two-time reigning Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews as Washington (15-13-4, 34 points) welcomes Toronto (19-6-6, 44 points) to Capital One Arena.

* Ovechkin (800-645—1,445 in 1,306 GP), who needs one tally to tie Gordie Howe (801-1,049—1,850 in 1,767 GP) on the NHL’s all-time goals list and two to leapfrog Mr. Hockey for sole possession of second place in League history, has 8-8—16 in his previous 14 head-to-head games with Matthews. Matthews (6-10—16 in 14 GP) owns the edge for both assists and wins in those contests (TOR: 8-4-2, 18 points; WSH: 6-7-1, 13 points).

* Ovechkin is set to contest his second head-to-head game with Maple Leafs goaltender and former teammate Ilya Samsonov (also Oct. 13), who has blanked opponents in each of his last two appearances and owns an active shutout sequence of 152:34 dating to Nov. 30. A total of 165 goaltenders have yielded a regular-season goal to Ovechkin, but Samsonov is not one of them.

THOMPSON CAN REACH 25-GOAL MARK IN RETURN TO ARIZONA
Tage Thompson (24-22—46 in 30 GP) can join Connor McDavid (27-33—60 in 31 GP) as the second NHL player to score 25 goals this season when the Sabres (14-14-2, 30 points) tangle with the Coyotes (10-14-4, 24 points) in Buffalo’s first-ever visit to Mullett Arena. Thompson would become the third-fastest player in franchise history to reach the 25-goal mark, behind Pat LaFontaine in 1991-92 (25-23—48 in 26 GP) and Alexander Mogilny in 1992-93 (25-19—44 in 28 GP).

* Thompson was born in Arizona after his father, Brent, played for the Coyotes and IHL’s Phoenix Roadrunners during the 1996-97 campaign. The younger Thompson leads all American players in goals and points this season, with Stars forward Jason Robertson (23-20—43 in 31 GP) occupying second place on both lists.

SAMSONOV’S SHUTOUT SEQUENCE NOT THE ONLY NOTABLE STREAK ON THE LINE
Some other noteworthy player and team streaks on the line Saturday:

Connor McDavid (11-14—25 in 11 GP) can extend the League’s longest active point streak to a dozen contests when the Oilers (17-13-1, 35 points) square off with the Ducks (8-20-3, 19 points) at Rogers Place. McDavid’s run is one of two active point streaks of at least 10 games in the NHL, with the other one belonging to Maple Leafs forward Michael Bunting (3-9—12 in 10 GP).

Igor Shesterkin and the Rangers (16-10-5, 37 points) can extend their winning streaks to six games when they take on John Tortorella and the Flyers (10-14-7, 27 points) at Wells Fargo Center. Tortorella, whose longest winning streak as New York’s head coach was seven contests (Oct. 3-17, 2009 & Oct. 31–Nov. 15, 2011), needs one victory to tie Pat Quinn (684) for 13th place on the NHL’s all-time list.

Brayden Point (6-1—7 in 5 GP) can extend the League’s longest active goal streak to six games when the Lightning (19-9-1, 39 points) travel to Bell Centre for a clash with the Canadiens (14-14-2, 30 points), who are guided by head coach and Tampa Bay franchise icon Martin St. Louis. Point has pocketed the winning goal in three of his last four contests.

Brent Burns can help the Hurricanes (17-6-6, 40 points) extend their point streak to double digits when they host the Central Division-leading Stars (18-8-5, 41 points) at PNC Arena. It will mark the first head-to-head contest between Burns and Joe Pavelski since the former was traded to Carolina – they played eight seasons together with San Jose from 2011-12 to 2018-19, including four when current Dallas head coach Peter DeBoer was behind the Sharks’ bench.

Johnny Gaudreau and the Blue Jackets (10-17-2, 22 points) visit the League-leading Bruins (23-4-2, 48 points) at TD Garden, where the hosts are 15-0-2 this season. Boston contests three more games at the venue this year (Dec. 19 vs. FLA, Dec. 22 vs. WPG & Dec. 31 vs. BUF) and can match its franchise record for longest season-opening home point streak (19-0-2 in 21 GP from Oct. 10, 1973–Jan. 10, 1974) before hosting Pittsburgh in the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park.

ZUCCARELLO ZIPS THREE GOALS INTO CHICAGO NET FOR SECOND CAREER HAT TRICK
Mats Zuccarello (3-1—4) scored the second hat trick of his NHL career and Kirill Kaprizov (6-13—19 in 11 GP) collected 1-2—3 to extend his home point streak to 11 games as Minnesota (17-11-2, 36 points) moved to 4-0-0 in its last four contests.

* Zuccarello (Oslo, Norway), whose first three-goal performance was more than seven years ago (Oct. 30, 2015 w/ NYR), became the first Norwegian-born player in NHL history with multiple hat tricks. Espen Knutsen (Oslo, Norway) is the only other Norwegian-born skater with one (Jan. 24, 2002 w/ CBJ).

* Zuccarello and Kaprizov have combined on the same goal a total of 26 times this season. That’s the second most by a pair of NHL teammates behind the Oilers tandem of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl (32x).

KELLER QUELLS ISLANDERS, KYROU STINGS FLAMES IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
Friday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured more notes from the three-game slate, including multi-goal efforts in wins by Coyotes forward Clayton Keller and Blues forward Jordan Kyrou:

* Keller scored the first of Arizona’s two goals in a 14-second span during the middle frame and added the game winner with 5:11 remaining in regulation. Keller has 5-1—6 in his last three contests, including a hat trick on Dec. 11 and an assist on Dec. 13.

* Kyrou tallied twice after posing for a photo with a young fan in a Sarnia Sting sweater during pre-game warmup. Kyrou skated four seasons with the Sting from 2014-15 to 2017-18 and his brother, Christian, was recently traded to the team from the Erie Otters.

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (18-10) at Phoenix Suns (17-12)

0

The New Orleans Pelicans had won seven consecutive games after taking two home games against the Phoenix Suns in three days last week. They have lost both of their games since.

The Suns went to Houston from New Orleans and lost their fifth consecutive game Tuesday night. But they ended that streak with a 111-95 victory against the Clippers on Thursday night in Los Angeles.

Phoenix and New Orleans will play each other for the third time in nine days and the final time this season when they meet Saturday night in Phoenix.

Devin Booker, who missed two games because of hamstring tightness, returned against the Clippers and scored 14 points.

Mikal Bridges led the way with 27 points as Phoenix ended a season-long five-game losing streak by beating the Clippers, who played without five key players, including Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. The Suns led by as many as 31 points.

Phoenix also was shorthanded as Cameron Payne (foot) and Deandre Ayton (ankle) missed the game because of injuries sustained against the Rockets. Both players will again sit out against New Orleans.

The Pelicans saw the tables turned on them after their sweep of the Suns when they lost twice to the host Jazz in three days.

After a lethargic 121-100 loss on Tuesday, New Orleans played much better Thursday but still lost, 132-129 in overtime.

New Orleans extended its four-point halftime lead to 13 points twice in the third quarter, but fell behind by one before taking a four-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Pelicans fell behind again in the fourth quarter, but tied the score on Trey Murphy III’s 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left. The game went to overtime when Larry Nance Jr. blocked Lauri Markkanen’s attempted short shot.

New Orleans didn’t score during the first three minutes of overtime and got outscored 9-6 in the final period. Zion Williamson, who scored a season-high 35 points in both of the wins against Phoenix, had two baskets and an assist in overtime to finish with 31 points.

But it wasn’t enough to prevent the Pelicans from falling to 1-4 in overtime games. The victory was a 129-124 triumph against the Suns last Sunday.

New Orleans, which lost the season series to the Jazz 3-0, will try to win the season series against the Suns, which beat the visiting Pelicans 124-111 on Oct. 28.
