NBA Preview: Miami Heat (24-20) at Atlanta Hawks (21-22)

0

The Miami Heat, winners of three straight, will look to extend its recent dominance over the host Atlanta Hawks when they meet on Monday as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day festivities.

The holiday is especially important in Atlanta, the birthplace of Dr. King and the civil rights movement. The Hawks are 21-7 on MLK Day, second in wins to New York with 23. Miami is 7-9 on the holiday.

The Heat just won back-to-back games over the Milwaukee Bucks, including a 111-95 drubbing on Saturday. Atlanta swept a back-to-back on the road, finishing with a 114-103 win at Toronto on Saturday.

This will be the second of four regular-season meetings between the clubs. Miami won the first meeting 106-98 in Atlanta on Nov. 27, a game that ended the Hawks’ streak of scoring 100-plus points in 40 consecutive games. The Heat has won four of the last five against the Hawks. The final two meetings will be played in Miami and March 4 and 6.

Miami has won six of its last eight and is No. 7 in the Eastern Conference, 2 1/2 games ahead of No. 9 Atlanta.

Adebayo leads the team with 21.5 points and 10.1 rebounds and has scored in double figures in all 39 games in which he has appeared and 55 straight dating back to last season.

Jimmy Butler is averaging 21.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists. Gabe Vincent, who averages 9.4 points, scored 28 and 27 points in the two games against Milwaukee.

Atlanta’s Trae Young and Dejounte Murray combined for 56 points, 15 assists and four steals. Young leads the team with 27.5 points and 8.7 rebounds and Murray averages 20.2 points and 4.8 assists.

The Heat played without Tyler Herro (Achilles soreness), and Kyle Lowry (left knee discomfort) on Saturday. Atlanta was missing Bogdan Bogdanovic (left quad soreness) and Clint Capela (right thigh strain).

NBA Preview: Boston Celtics (32-12) at Charlotte Hornets (11-33)

0

The Boston Celtics own the best record in the NBA. Now, they seem to be unleashing even more productive resources.

Malcolm Brogdon has turned out to be a fine addition to the roster this season.

He could be pressed into more extensive duty when the Celtics take on the Hornets on Monday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C.

This will be a rematch of Boston’s 122-106 victory on the same court Saturday night. The Celtics have won six in a row, with Tatum leading the team in scoring in five of those games.

Yet without Jaylen Brown, the Celtics’ backcourt barely missed a beat. That’s because Brogdon poured in a season-high 30 points. That was the most points allowed by Charlotte to a player coming off the bench this season.

Brogdon is in his first season with the Celtics, but the veteran guard has made quite an impact. He made 11 of 17 shots from the field on Saturday night.

Across the last seven games, he has averaged 18.9 points per game while shooting 56.3 percent on 3-pointers.

Boston’s Derrick White left Saturday night’s game with a sprained neck, so the Celtics could be in a more of a lineup bind with their backcourt for the rematch. White collided with teammate Marcus Smart.

But that still leaves White’s status unclear for Monday.

The Hornets are on a four-game losing streak, with the last three of those defeats coming by double-figure margins. After Monday, they have their next four games on the road.

Charlotte held a 16-point first-half lead Saturday night before fading.

In the last two games with Charlotte, the Celtics have launched a total of 105 3-point shots (52 on Nov. 28 and 53 on Saturday).

This will be the second time this season that the Celtics have played the same team in consecutive games. They lost both matchups with Orlando in mid-December at home. That turned into a three-game losing streak before Boston won 10 of its next 12.

NBA Preview: Golden State Warriors (21-22) at Washington Wizards (18-25)

Wizards hope to get Bradley Beal back as Warriors visit

Washington Wizards fans likely will have to wait until after pregame warmups Monday afternoon to learn whether star guard Bradley Beal will be able to return from his hamstring injury to face the visiting Golden State Warriors.

Beal, who has missed the last four games and seven of the last eight, was given a green light to return to full basketball activities on the practice floor Thursday. He was not, however, cleared to play Friday, when the Wizards dropped a 112-108 decision at home to the New York Knicks.

Washington has had two days off since the defeat, which has increased Beal’s chances of returning to the point where he wasn’t ruled out a day beforehand. Rather, he’s been listed as questionable, likely to be a game-time decision.

Beal has only played 24 games this season, having already had five-, six- and three-game absences before his current four-gamer.

With Beal watching, Kyle Kuzma put up a season-best 40 points in the loss to the Knicks. A 16.3-points-per-game career scorer, he’s now topped 30 five times this season, while eclipsing 20 on 28 occasions.

The Wizards have lost four of five and now get a visit from the defending champions. Turns out, that’s not as bad as it sounds.

The Warriors, who have fought injuries of their own, have been one of the league’s worst road teams this season. They fell to 4-17 away from home with a 132-118 loss in Chicago against the Bulls on Sunday afternoon.

Klay Thompson had a team-high 26 points in the loss, but he won’t play against the Wizards since he’s not been cleared for back-to-backs this season.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr announced Sunday that Stephen Curry, having just returned from an 11-game absence due to a separated left shoulder, has been given the OK to double-up, so he’s expected to face the Wizards.

Curry had 20 points and 10 rebounds in 34 minutes against the Bulls.

Besides possibly seeing Beal and not having Thompson, the Warriors might also have a mental obstacle Monday in that they’ve been invited to the White House by President Biden on their day off Tuesday to celebrate their 2022 championship.

The Warriors and Wizards will be meeting for the first time this season. Curry had 47 points in a 126-112 home win over the Wizards last March, before Corey Kispert went for 25 points in a 123-115 Washington home win 13 days later.

Beal didn’t play in either head-to-head last year as his season ended 33 games early because of a torn ligament in his left wrist.

NBA Preview: Toronto Raptors (19-24) at New York Knicks (25-19)

0

The Toronto Raptors will try to replicate the success they had on their last trip to New York when they visit the Knicks on Monday afternoon.

Pascal Siakam scored a career-best 52 points on Dec. 21 in the Raptors’ 113-106 victory that ended their six-game losing streak and New York’s eight-game winning streak.

The Knicks, who defeated the host Detroit Pistons 117-104 Sunday afternoon, avenged the loss to the Raptors with a 112-108 victory at Toronto on Jan. 6.

Julius Randle had 32 points and 11 rebounds and Mitchell Robinson added 10 points and 18 rebounds before fouling out in New York’s win at Toronto. Siakam was held to 18 points and 13 rebounds.

On Sunday, Randle had 42 points and 15 rebounds against the Pistons to help the Knicks to their seventh win in their past eight games.

The Raptors finished a 3-3 homestand Saturday with a 114-103 loss to the Atlanta Hawks in which they never led.

The Raptors had hoped to turn around their season with the season-long homestand. They lost the first two games to the Milwaukee Bucks and Knicks before winning the next three — one against the Portland Trail Blazers and two against the Charlotte Hornets.

Scottie Barnes had 27 points and 12 rebounds against Atlanta on Saturday. Fred VanVleet, however, had three points on 1-for-9 shooting and is questionable for Monday’s matchup because of lower back soreness.

The Raptors will play 10 of their next 12 games on the road beginning Monday.

The Knicks play their next two games at home after their victory at Detroit.

New York coach Tom Thibodeau praised Randle’s defense in Sunday’s game.

Jalen Brunson added 27 points for the Knicks and Robinson had 12 rebounds.

Immanuel Quickley added 17 points off the bench.

The Knicks are using wins like Sunday’s to gear up for the rest of the season.

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (26-17) at Cleveland Cavaliers (27-17)

0

The New Orleans Pelicans hope that their long road trip ends better than the Cleveland Cavaliers’ lengthy excursion ended.

The Pelicans will try to finish their longest road trip of the season with a winning record Monday when they visit the Cavaliers, who finished 2-3 on their trip after a 110-102 loss at Minnesota on Saturday.

That completed a 10-day trip that featured games in five cities and three time zones.

Cleveland had a 14-point lead early in the third quarter and took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter, but got outscored 33-22 in the final period.

“Giving up 33 points in the fourth quarter, our defense wasn’t at its usual,” Bickerstaff said.

Donovan Mitchell missed shootaround Saturday morning because of illness and went on to score just 14 points, shooting 5 of 16 from the floor, including 2 of 9 on 3-pointers. The Cavaliers committed 18 turnovers, which the Wolves turned into 28 points.

New Orleans’ 10-day road trip started with a loss at Dallas, followed by a win at Washington, a loss at Boston and a win at Detroit, 116-110 on Friday night.

The Pelicans defeated the Pistons despite the absence of three starters. Brandon Ingram hasn’t played since Nov. 25 because of a bruised toe, Zion Williamson has been out for two weeks because of a strained hamstring and Herbert Jones Jr. injured his back earlier in the trip.

On Friday, 7-foot center Jonas Valanciunas took advantage of a Pistons team that was short-handed in the frontcourt and finished with 33 points on 12-of-15 shooting and 16 rebounds.

Valanciunas scored 13 points in the first quarter and New Orleans went on a 14-0 run midway through the second quarter to take a nine-point halftime lead.

Detroit got within three points with 3:27 left in the contest and Valanciunas made baskets from the low post on New Orleans’ next two possessions.

Valanciunas had 12 points in the fourth quarter, including two free throws that gave the Pelicans a six-point lead with 22.5 seconds remaining.

NBA Preview: Indiana Pacers (23-21) at Milwaukee Bucks (27-16)

0

Both Indiana and host Milwaukee come into Monday’s Eastern Conference matinee looking to right their respective ships despite key absences.

The Bucks dropped back-to-back matchups in Miami on Thursday and Saturday, struggling to mount much offense with 31-point per game scorer and two-time Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo sidelined with knee soreness.

Milwaukee dropped 108-102 and 111-95 decisions to the Heat without the NBA’s third-leading scorer available. The Bucks are now just 5-8 over their last 13 heading into Monday’s contest.

While the Bucks await word on Antetokounmpo’s availability for Monday, Indiana remains down All-Star candidate and NBA assist leader Tyrese Haliburton.

Haliburton — who dishes 10.2 assists as well as scoring a team-high 20.2 points per game — has missed the last two games with a sprained elbow and knee bruise. The Pacers lost both contests, in addition to the date preceding them at New York.

The three-game skid sends Indiana into Milwaukee on the first date of a four-game road swing.

Chris Duarte, who missed 21 games from Nov. 7 through Dec. 16, played his best game since returning to the Indiana lineup with 25 points on Saturday. His performance was a bright spot in a mostly dismal offensive efffort for the Pacers, who shot just 38-of-103 from the floor and 11-of-47 from 3-point range against the Grizzlies.

Those offensive woes extended to Buddy Hield, whose streak of 11 consecutive games scoring in double figures ended with a 2-of-8 shooting, five-point showing against Memphis.

Indiana also played without Myles Turner on Saturday, the result of a back injury. Turner has been sidelined for the entirety of the Pacers’ ongoing slide.

Monday’s status for Turner — who is averaging 17.0 points, a team-best 7.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game — could prove pivotal both for Indiana and Milwaukee trying to jump-start their offenses.

Turner’s void in the lane contributed to Memphis scoring 70 points in the paint on Saturday.

The Bucks’ own interior threat, Bobby Portis, comes into Monday’s contest averaging a double-double at 14 points and 10 rebounds per game, primarily coming off the bench. Portis is averaging 2.6 offensive rebounds per game, tops on a Milwaukee team averaging 12.1 offensive boards a contest.

That ranks near the top of the league, while Indiana’s 12.2 offensive rebounds allowed per game are the second-most surrendered by any team.

Houston signed six position players and three pitchers

HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Astros have agreed to terms on contracts with nine international free agents, including eight players from the Dominican Republic and one from Venezuela.  The announcement was made by Astros Assistant General Manager Charles Cook. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

“We are excited to welcome a new group of international players into our organization as the 2023 signing period begins,” said Cook. “Our International Scouting department does a tremendous job leading a cross-departmental effort to identify, evaluate, and acquire amateur talent across the globe. Today’s signings mark the culmination of that process with significant contributions coming not only from our International Scouting staff, but also from our Player Development, Performance Science, Sports Medicine & Performance, and Research & Development departments. We look forward to supporting this class of players as they begin their professional baseball journeys and expect them to positively impact our farm system quickly.”

The current MLB International signing period, which began today, runs from January 15 through December 15, 2023.

Among today’s signings are Dominican shortstops Camilo Díaz and Germán Ramirez along with Dominican outfielder Esmil Valencia, who are each ranked among Baseball America’s top 30 prospects in this year’s international signing class.

“Camilo Díaz is a tool-sy and dynamic shortstop with a plus arm and the athleticism to stay in the middle of the diamond, “ said Assistant Director International Scouting Raymon Sanchez. “He has a big, strong build with present raw power, and projects to hit in the middle of the order with HR/RBI production. Díaz has the potential to have well above average tools across the board, and we are excited to add him to our system.”

“Germán Ramírez is a lanky and athletic infielder with the arm strength and range to play shortstop,” said International Scouting Director Brian Rodgers. “Germán makes consistent hard contact in games and continued to polish his hitting approach during our scouting process. A hard worker who endears himself to peers and baseball evaluators alike, Germán is another impressive prospect who we are excited to add to a talented and deep 2023 International Signing Class.”

“Esmil Valencia is a medium-framed outfielder who does it all on the baseball field,” said Dominican Scouting Supervisor Alfredo Ulloa. “An above-average and explosive athlete, Esmil projects as a top-of-the-lineup hitter who can hit for average, power, and steal bases. An above-average defender, Esmil plays center field and shows a 70-grade arm on the 20-80 scouting scale. We are excited to add what we feel is one of the better international talents to our organization.”

Pirates sign 22 players on first day of the 2022-23 international signing period

0

Team also signs No. 10 internationally-ranked prospect Jun-Seok Shim

Members of the Pittsburgh Pirates scouting leadership team were present today in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic during the first official day of the 2022-23 international signing period. The organization signed a total of 22 players from eight different countries (Venezuela, South Korea, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Aruba and Uganda) during the first official today of the 2022-23 international signing period.

Director of International Scouting Junior Vizcaino, International Supervisors Jesus Lantigua and Saul Torres, Senior Advisor for Latin American Operations Luis Silverio, and the rest of the organization’s Venezuelan scouting staff members signed a total of seven players at a ceremony today in Valencia, Venezuela. Members of the scouting leadership team will also take part in an official signing ceremony on Tuesday in the Dominican Republic.

“Our international scouting group will go anywhere in the world to find the right players and our development staff works just as hard to make sure each and every one of those players can thrive with the Pirates,” said Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington. “We are excited to welcome this international class to the Pirates organization and can’t wait to support their growth as players and as people.”

Eighteen-year-old Jun-Seok Shim, who is ranked 10th by MLB Pipeline in this year’s international draft class, agreed to terms of a contract with the Pirates today in South Korea. Later this month, the 6’4’’ right-handed pitcher will officially sign his contract in Pittsburgh. Shim was signed by Pirates scout Jong Hoon Na.

“He has the traits to be developed as a potential middle- to top-of-the-rotation type pitcher, but has the power, aggressiveness and makeup to be a shut-down, end-of-game type pitcher,” said Vizcaino. “He has a plus fastball and is continuing to develop his secondary pitches.”

“Jun Seok has been on our radar for a few years and we are fortunate with the opportunity to bring him into the organization,” said Pirates Assistant Director of Player Personnel Max Kwan. “He has quality power traits coupled with a strong ability to spin the ball. We are really excited to collaborate with Jun Seok on his development to the big leagues.”

Seventeen-year-old catcher Jonathan Rivero, who is regarded for his tools on both sides of the ball along with athleticism and quickness behind the plate, was signed out of Los Teques, Venezuela, by Pirates scout Jose Partidas.

“Jonathan has plus instincts for the game and the ingredients to be a leader from behind the plate,” said Vizcaino. “He also has a smooth swing with an advanced approach and feel for barrel.”

Sixteen-year-old right-handed pitcher Carlos Castillo is considered to have traits of a starter while possessing a plus feel for the strike zone with all of his pitches. The 6’1’’ Castillo was signed out of Las Mercedes, Venezuela, by Pirates scout Pedro Avila.

“Carlos has the ability to command the fastball in the zone and mix his secondary pitches for strikes any time in the count,” said Vizcaino. “His delivery is easy and his arm is fluid and clean.”

Sixteen-year-old Miguel Rodriguez shows potential to hit in the top of the lineup with ability to play in center field defensively. The 5’10’’ Rodriguez was signed out of Caracas, Venezuela, by Pirates scout Jose Partidas.

“Miguel has gap-to-gap approach at the plate with a quick bat through the zone and the ability to lift the baseball to the pull side with power,” said Vizcaino. “He has above average speed that he knows how to use to affect the game on both sides while also being a smart player with leadership skills.”

Seventeen-year-old Carlos Mateo, who is from San Jose de Acoa, Dominican Republic, was signed by Pirates scout Omelbis Corportan. Mateo features a plus fastball that reaches the upper 90’s along with development of secondary pitches.

“He has a power pitcher’s body with athleticism and aggressiveness on the mound,” said Vizcaino.

Eighteen-year-old Bladimir Pichardo, whose hometown is Montecristi, Dominican Republic, was signed by Pirates scout Daurys Nin. Pichardo is regarded by Vizcaino for his power fastball and projectable secondary pitches.

“His fastball has downhill action with feel for the zone,” said Vizcaino. “He also has a natural confidence and competes well on the mound.”

Raymond Mola, a 17-year-old from Peravia, Dominican Republic, is rated as the No. 26 prospect among this year’s international draft class by MLB Pipeline, profiles as a corner outfielder with both projectable bat and power according to Vizcaino. Mola was signed by Daurys Nin.

“He is an aggressive hitter who can drive the baseball to both gaps and turn on the baseball with power,” said Vizcaino. “He has an aggressive approach to his defensive play and on the bases.”

Middle infielder Antonio Pimentel is regarded for his feel for hitting along with an aggressive approach at the plate.

“He has the ability to drive the baseball with constant authority to both gaps,” said Vizcaino. “He also has the tools and feel for hitting to hit at the top of the lineup.”

The Pirates also signed 16-year-old David Matoma from Luwero, Uganda. The 6’0’’ right-handed pitcher, who was signed by Tom Gillespie, is regarded as a young, athletic righthander with a quick arm and the ability to reach back with the fastball.

“The fastball is a potential power-type that already reaches the mid-90’s,” said Vizcaino. “His secondary pitches are developing and his frame needs to get stronger, but David has the natural tools to develop into a solid professional pitcher.”
