• Matty Beniers scored his sixth goal of the road trip. According to NHL Stats, his six goals tied for the fourth-most by a rookie in NHL history during a road trip of at least seven games.

• Daniel Sprong’s first-period goal was his 14th of the season, matching his career high that reached in both 2018-19 and 2021-22. With 35 games played this season, this is the fewest number of games it has taken Sprong to score 14 goals.

• Vince Dunn set an individual career high for consecutive games played with an assist and tied his career best for consecutive games with a point (both six) with an assist on Matty Beniers’ first-period goal.

• Jamie Oleksiak earned an assist for the 100th point of his NHL career. He became the eighth defenseman from the 2011 NHL Draft to reach the milestone.

RENO, Nev. – Nevada women’s basketball returns home on Monday to face Wyoming at 6:30 p.m. on Special Olympics Day at Lawlor Events Center. 

Larry Burnett will have the call on 94.1 FM and 1450 AM, with a 20 minute pregame show prior to tipoff. Fans can also listen live online through the Varsity Network. The game will be available to watch on Nevada Sports Net and live stats can be accessed through Sidearm. 

Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets online in advance starting at $10. Tickets are available for purchase in-person starting at just $12. 

Nevada is undefeated this season when it holds its opponents to under 60 points. They held Utah State to just 20.9 percent shooting on Jan. 14, the lowest percentage held by Nevada in a Mountain West game since the Pack joined the conference in 2012-13.

Junior guard Alyssa Jimenez most recently scored a career-high 22 points while grabbing 11 rebounds on Jan. 14 against Utah State, her third double-double this season. She is the first player since Terae Briggs in 2018-19 to register at least three double-doubles in a season.

Nevada assistant coach Ashley Elliott will go up against her alma mater on Monday. As a player, Elliott had a Hall of Fame level collegiate career at Wyoming in the early 2000s where she earned a Kodak/WBCA All-American honorable mention in 2005. She was a two-time First Team All-Mountain West selection and ranks in the top 10 at Wyoming in career three-point field goals made, assists, free throws made and steals. She was inducted into the Wyoming Hall of Fame in 2015.

SCOUTING WYOMING  
Wyoming has won five out of its last six games and is off to a 4-1 start in Mountain West play. The Cowgirls are at the top half of the Mountain West standings and have outscored their opponents by an average of 8.1 points. 

Quinn Weidemann leads a Wyoming offense that has three players averaging 10 or more points per game. Weidemann has put up 12.6 points per game while Grace Ellis and Allyson Fertig have each put up 10.4 points per game. Fertig has nearly averaged a double-double, bringing in 9.2 rebounds per game.

* The Jets moved into first place in the Western Conference standings – a ranking they’ve held this late in the season only once before – as Josh Morrissey became the fastest defenseman in franchise history to 40 assists in a season.

* Brock Boeser scored the second-latest game-tying goal in a win in franchise history to help the Canucks earn their fifth multi-goal comeback victory of the season – tied for the most in the NHL.

* The NHL is set for the busiest Monday of 2022-23 with 22 teams in action with storylines that include David Krejci skating in his 1,000th NHL contest and the Kraken putting their eight-game winning streak on the line.

JETS FLY INTO TOP SPOT IN WESTERN CONFERENCE AS MORRISSEY HITS 40 ASSISTS
Josh Morrissey (0-1—1) joined Erik Karlsson (13-43—56 in 44 GP)as the second defenseman to hit the 40-assist mark in 2022-23 as the Jets (29-14-1, 59 points) overtook the idle Golden Knights (28-14-2, 58 points) for first place in the Western Conference. Morrissey (8-40—48 in 44 GP) is tied with Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin (13-35—48 in 40 GP) for second in scoring among defensemen this season behind Karlsson.

* This marks the second time in Jets/Thrashers history that the club has occupied first place in the conference standings this late in the season (min. 40 GP). The other instance came in 2018-19 when the Jets took over the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference by improving to 36-18-3 (57 GP) on Feb. 12, 2019 – a stay that lasted only two days.

* The Western Conference has now seen three teams take hold of the top spot since Jan. 10: Dallas held first place for two days and Vegas held it for four over that span before Winnipeg’s win Sunday.

* Morrissey (44 GP) became the fourth different Jets/Thrashers defenseman to record 40 assists in a season and the fastest to do so. He now sits just five assists back of setting a new single-season club record for a blueliner.

* Morrissey is one of three players in Jets/Thrashers history to hit the 40-assist mark in fewer than 45 contests, following forwards Blake Wheeler (35 GP in 2018-19) and Marc Savard (43 GP in 2005-06 w/ ATL).

Blackhawks defenseman Isaak Phillips scored his first NHL goal Saturday while skating in his 13th game and ninth this season (1-2—3 in 9 GP). Phillips, whose dad is from St. Vincent, Caribbean, helped Team Jamaica go 8-0-0 to win the 2018 U-20 Team Elite Prospect Hockey Showcase tournament championship in Toronto. Jamaica joined the IIHF as an associate member on May 18, 2012 and at that time became the first Caribbean nation to do so.

The busiest Monday of the 2022-23 schedule will commence at 1 p.m. ET with puck drop between four American teams – the Panthers (20-20-4, 44 points), Sabres (21-18-2, 44 points), Flyers (18-18-7, 43 points) and Bruins (33-5-4, 70 points) – as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed across the United States.


Here are storylines to look out for on Monday’s 11-game slate:
 

* The Kraken return home to put their franchise-record eight-game winning streak on the line – the NHL’s longest active run. Seattle has scored eight-plus goals twice during their current run, including last game (also 8 on Jan. 7), and a total of four times this season (also 9 on Nov. 29 & 8 on Nov. 23). They became the first team since the Penguins in 2011-12 (4 GP) with as many eight-plus goal outings in a campaign – the last team with more was Pittsburgh in 1995-96 (10 GP).


* Jason Robertson (29-31—60 in 44 GP) and Mikko Rantanen (29-24—53 in 41 GP) each enter Monday with the opportunity to join the 30-goal club this season, which currently features five players: Connor McDavid (37), David Pastrnak (33), Tage Thompson (31), Bo Horvat (30) and Alex Ovechkin (30). Both Robertson and Rantanen could become the fastest player to reach the 30-goal mark with their team since each club relocated to Dallas and Colorado, respectively.


* Jack Hughes (28-26—54 in 43 GP) will look to help the Devils (28-12-3, 59 points), who sit second in the Metropolitan Division, extend their road winning streak to seven games – something they have done only five times in franchise history and already once this season (11 GP in 2022-23). Hughes has multiple points in each of his past two outings and multiple goals in three of his past five – he leads all players this month with 8-5—13 (7 GP), two more points than NHL-leading scorer Connor McDavid who shares third with 5-6—11 in (7 GP).

* Juuso Parssinen will aim to extend his point streak to seven games (1-7—8 in 6 GP) and match Filip Forsberg (7 GP in 2014-15) for the longest run by a rookie in franchise history when Nashville takes to the ice Monday. He has already established a Predators record for longest assist streak by a rookie with his current run (6 GP). Parssinen, Nashville’s seventh-round pick in 2019, has 4-13—17 (28 GP) in his first year with the club after skating with TPS in Finland’s top professional league last season.

* Tage Thompson (31-27—58 in 41 GP) and Rasmus Dahlin (13-35—48 in 40 GP) both sit two points shy of season milestones – the 60- and 50-point mark – with Thompson sitting third in the NHL in goals and Dahlin tied for second among defensemen in points.

LeBron James continues march toward history as Lakers host Rockets

After reaching a major milestone Sunday, Lakers star LeBron James will set his sights on one of the NBA’s most storied records as soon as Monday when Los Angeles hosts the Houston Rockets.

James reached the 38,000-point plateau in Sunday’s 113-112 loss to the visiting Philadelphia 76ers and will begin to take aim at Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387 points as he tracks down a historic moment that figures to come next month.

While Abdul-Jabbar saw a major scoring decline in his later seasons, including a 10.1 points-per-game mark in his final season of 1988-89, James is as productive as ever in his advancing age. James has averaged 29.2 points in 33 games this season after turning 38 late last month.

More productivity came against the Sixers, as James scored his 12th point of the game on a jump shot from the top of the key with 5:43 remaining in the first quarter to reach 38,001 for his career. He had 16 of his 35 points in the first quarter.

James has been bothered by a sore ankle as of late and was listed as probable going into Sunday’s game, leaving a chance he could rest on the second night of a back-to-back.

The Lakers lost their third consecutive game but have been far more competitive recently with a five-game winning streak through the first week of the month.

Adding to the team’s positive outlook is that star forward Anthony Davis is progressing from a stress injury in his right foot that has kept him out the last 15 games. Others close to a return are Lonnie Walker IV (knee) and Austin Reaves (hamstring).

The Rockets also are on a back-to-back scenario following a game at Los Angeles. Houston fell 121-100 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday afternoon before the teams cleared the arena to make way for the Lakers-76ers game.

It was the Rockets’ season-worst 10th consecutive loss and their 15th defeat in the past 16 games.

The Rockets were playing two days after a testy 139-114 defeat to the Sacramento Kings, a game that included an on-court scuffle. Because of the incident, Rockets starters Jalen Green and Jae’Sean Tate did not play Sunday while serving a one-game suspension for leaving the bench area during the incident.

The Rockets trailed just 91-90 heading into the fourth quarter but scored just 10 points in the final period.

The short-handed Phoenix Suns will face a formidable challenge when they wrap up a four-game trip against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.

Memphis is riding a season-high nine-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the NBA, while Phoenix has lost 11 of its last 13.

Ja Morant is averaging 28.9 points in seven appearances during the Grizzlies’ streak. The star point guard had 23 points, 10 assists and arguably the dunk of the year in Saturday’s 130-112 win over the Indiana Pacers.

Desmond Bane added 25 points for Memphis, which is a season-high 16 games over .500. The Grizzlies certainly made a believer out of Pacers coach Rick Carlisle.

The Suns have struggled without a number of injured players, including Devin Booker (groin), Cameron Payne (foot), Chris Paul (hip), Landry Shamet (hip) and Cam Johnson (knee).

Shamet is expected to return Monday after missing the last three games with a sore right hip. Johnson could join him later this week.

Phoenix dropped a 121-116 decision to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday despite the efforts of Damion Lee, who scored a career-high 31 points. Mikal Bridges added 24 in the loss.

Deandre Ayton returned after missing two games with a left ankle sprain and had 11 points and 11 rebounds, but the 7-foot center was 5-of-18 shooting from the field.

Williams was encouraged by the play of third-year guard Saben Lee, who scored 12 points in 13 minutes off the bench and could see more playing time against the Grizzlies.

The Suns will need a complete effort to keep pace with Memphis, which is averaging 124 points during its winning streak.

Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke returned in Saturday’s win over Indiana and scored 11 points after missing the previous six games due to left hip soreness.

Ziaire Williams made his first start of the season and scored 13 points. Williams was starting in place of Dillon Brooks, who is listed as day-to-day with right ankle soreness.

The Grizzlies are also monitoring the status of forward John Konchar, who missed Saturday’s game with a non-COVID illness.

While Memphis has looked dominant at times during its win streak, coach Taylor Jenkins says the team still has room to grow.

Memphis and Phoenix have split their first two meetings this season, with each team winning on the road.

Injuries are a bigger storyline than the teams’ blockbuster offseason trade heading into Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee matchup in Minneapolis between the Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Rudy Gobert, the key piece of that whopper of a deal, had to leave Saturday’s game against his old teammate, Donovan Mitchell of Cleveland, due to a groin strain.

Gobert is listed as day-to-day, so his status is up in the air for Minnesota, which already is without All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns, who’s been out since late November with a calf injury.

The Jazz played the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night without four key players, including leading scorer Lauri Markkanen (hip), starting center Kelly Olynyk (ankle), Collin Sexton (hamstring) and Rudy Gay (back).

While it remains to be seen who will be available at tipoff Monday afternoon, both teams were competitive without those athletes in action on Saturday.

After Gobert left with right-groin soreness, the Timberwolves had to deal with Jaden McDaniels picking up his fifth foul less than three minutes into the second half. Naz Reid led a contingent of players to pick up the slack with 17 players, nicely complementing Anthony Edwards’ 26 points.

Jalen Nowell (16 points) and Luka Garza (nine points) also played well off the bench in Minnesota’s 110-102 win over the Cavaliers.

It’s possible that crew will be counted on again against the Jazz.

Garza tied the game at 80 with a 3-pointer in the third quarter, and the T-Wolves went on to outscore the Cavs 33-22 in the fourth.

The Jazz will enter Monday’s game after a disappointing one-point home loss to the 76ers, but short-handed Utah rallied out of a 20-point hole to take the lead late in the game.

Jordan Clarkson and Walker Kessler put Utah ahead with buckets in the final 33.2 seconds. Unfortunately for the Jazz, James Harden and Joel Embiid responded with go-ahead baskets for Philly.

Clarkson finished with 38 points in the 118-117 loss. Kessler had another double-double, the seventh of his rookie season, with 15 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks to help fill in for Olynyk.

Clarkson scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to give the Jazz a chance.

Utah and Minnesota have played each other twice this season. The Jazz beat the Timberwolves in overtime, 132-126, in Minneapolis in October.

Minnesota returned the favor by winning in Utah 118-108 in December.
