NBA Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers (29-19) at New York Knicks (25-23)

0

In the past month, the New York Knicks are living the life of an extremely streaky team.

The Knicks enjoyed the highs of a captivating eight-game winning streak along with a four-game run.

The Knicks also endured a five-game slide and take a four-game skid into Tuesday’s visit from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Since falling to 10-13 with a 121-100 home loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Dec. 3, the Knicks are 15-10 in their past 25 games — but how they have reached five games over .500 since then is a streaky display. After the loss to Dallas, the Knicks began an eight-game run with a 92-81 home win over Cleveland on Dec. 4 before starting a five-game skid with a seven-point home loss to the Toronto Raptors on Dec. 21.

The five-game skid ended with a 20-point win in Houston on Dec. 31 and was followed by a four-game winning streak and a run of seven wins in eight games. Since a 117-104 win at Detroit on Jan. 15, the Knicks have dropped four straight by an average of 9.3 points.

The last two losses have come without defensive-minded center Mitchell Robinson, who injured his thumb early in Wednesday’s wire-to-wire 116-105 loss to Washington. In two games without him, the Knicks endured a 139-124 loss at the Atlanta Hawks on Friday and a 125-116 loss in Toronto two nights later to waste a 30-point showing from RJ Barrett.

In Toronto, the Knicks allowed 37 points in the first quarter. It marked the third straight game New York allowed at least 35 points in the opening quarter and occurred after it allowed the Hawks to shoot 56 percent.

The Knicks can rescue themselves by playing better at home as they hold the dubious distinction of being the only team with a winning record that has a losing record at home. New York is 11-13 at home but just 3-6 in its past nine, including blowing a 10-point lead in an overtime loss to Toronto on Jan. 16 and a 17-point lead to the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 9.

Cleveland seems likely to get Donovan Mitchell back from a left groin strain after he missed the past three games. Mitchell tweaked his groin Jan. 16 against New Orleans but practiced fully Monday, a sign that he could return against the Knicks, whom he scored 38 against Oct. 30 in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers improved to 3-5 without Mitchell by getting a big night from Evan Mobley in Saturday’s 114-102 win over visiting Milwaukee. Mobley scored a career-high 38 points on 19-of-27 shooting without making a 3-pointer or a free throw.

Mobley reached double-digits for the ninth straight game and also scored 14 points in the fourth quarter.

If Mitchell returns, Caris LeVert would slide back into his reserve role after scoring 58 points and handing out 15 assists in three games in Mitchell’s place.

NBA Preview: Boston Celtics (35-13) at Miami Heat (26-22)

0

The Miami Heat — and particularly center Bam Adebayo — are bracing for a visit from the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.

And a dogfight it’s been, as the two teams have gone toe-to-toe with each other on some of the biggest stages. Miami eliminated Boston in the 2020 playoffs, when the Heat made it to the NBA Finals. However, Boston got revenge last season, eliminating Miami in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals for a shot at its 18th title.

Adebayo indicated that Boston is one of the teams he respects the most — along with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Miami has gone 10-5 over its past 15 games, surging into sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The Heat had Monday off after rallying from a 16-point deficit to defeat the New Orleans Pelicans 100-96 on Sunday.

Boston, which has the best record in the NBA at 35-13, had its nine-game winning streak snapped on Monday when the Orlando Magic pulled off a 113-98 upset.

The Celtics were short-handed against Orlando, though. Robert Williams III was nursing a left knee injury, while reigning Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart was out with a sprained right ankle. Malcolm Brogdon, who has been an effective sixth man, missed Monday’s game for personal reasons.

Williams is averaging 7.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks while shooting 75.4 percent from the floor. He’s served as a rim protector, a dynamic lob threat and a surprisingly good passer, but his injury is especially concerning considering he had surgery on that same knee last March.

Marcus Smart is averaging 11.1 points and a team-high 7.2 assists, while Brogdon is scoring 14.3 points per game in his first season in Boston after being acquired via trade this offseason.

Those injuries put even more pressure on Boston’s two biggest stars, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Tatum is averaging 31.0 points, while Brown is close behind with an average of 26.9.

Brown acknowledged the difficulty of Boston’s current predicament, especially with a meeting with the Heat on the horizon.

Miami will counter Tatum and Brown with its big three — Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro and Adebayo.

Butler leads Miami in scoring (21.6 points per game) and steals (2.1) while ranking second in rebounds (6.1) and assists (5.0). However, he is averaging just 15.0 points while facing consistent double teams over the past two games.

Herro is averaging 20.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists. Adebayo is averaging 21.4 points and a team-high 10.1 rebounds.

NBA Preview: Chicago Bulls (22-24) at Indiana Pacers (23-25)

0

The sputtering Indiana Pacers will try to snap a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday when the Chicago Bulls, playing the second leg of a back-to-back set, visit Indianapolis.

Chicago comes in riding a three-game winning streak after a 111-100 home victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday. DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points in the latest triumph. Zach LaVine added 20 points, and Nikola Vucevic amassed 14 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists.

The result marked a successful return stateside for the Bulls after a 126-108 rout of the Detroit Pistons on Thursday in Paris. LaVine scored 30 points in that contest while DeRozan, rejoining the lineup for the trip to France after a three-game absence caused by a quad injury, finished with 26.

With his back-to-back 26-point outings, DeRozan has scored at least 21 in 13 of his past 15 appearances — with one of the two outliers being the Jan. 9 loss at Boston in which he first sustained his injury.

DeRozan — appearing in his 1,000th career game — was one of six Bulls to score in double figures against the Hawks. Alex Caruso and Coby White recorded 12 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench.

Chicago rallied after shooting 24 percent in the first quarter.

The Bulls will look to continue their defensive play of the past two outings against a Pacers team that has struggled to find consistency with Tyrese Haliburton out of the lineup.

Haliburton — Indiana’s leading scorer on the season at 20.2 points per game and the NBA’s assists leader with 10.2 a contest — has been sidelined sustaining elbow and knee injuries on Jan. 11.

The Pacers are winless over that stretch, having reached their season-long scoring average of 115 points per game just once.

Haliburton told Bally Sports Indiana the elbow is slowing his return to the lineup more than his knee. On JJ Redick’s “The Old Man and The Three” podcast, Haliburton suggested an early February return.

Indiana has dropped two games below .500 due to its ongoing skid.

A positive for the Pacers amid their struggles has been the play of T.J. McConnell. After flirting with a triple-double on Jan. 14 against Memphis and scoring a career-high 29 points on Jan. 16 at Milwaukee, McConnell posted a triple-double on Saturday in Indiana’s 112-107 loss at Phoenix: 18 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

McConnell’s move into the starting five sent rookie Bennedict Mathurin back to the bench, where he has thrived much of the season. After scoring 26 points in the first of four consecutive starts, Mathurin recorded less than his 17.3-point per game in three straight outings.

He finished with 19 and 23 in Indiana’s past two games, coming off the bench each time.

Defender Alexander Callens Departs New York City Football Club

0

New York, N.Y., – New York City Football Club today announced that Defender Alexander Callens has departed the Club to join LaLiga side Girona FC.

Alex joined New York ahead of the 2017 season and has played 193 games logging in 17,083 minutes for NYCFC across all competitions, scoring 15 goals and providing one assist. The Peruvian defender played a crucial role in helping the Club add its first pieces of silverware to its trophy cabinet with the 2021 MLS Cup and Campeones Cup in 2022.

NYCFC Sporting Director David Lee said “I’d like to thank Alex for the tremendous amount he has given to the Club since his arrival. We have seen Alex grow into the player and leader he is today through his incredible work ethic and commitment, establishing himself as one of our longest serving players. His performances have earned him recognition as one of the best defenders in the league, and he will go down in NYCFC history for playing a vital role in helping us win MLS Cup and Campeones Cup.

“Not only is Alex a fantastic player, he is also a great person and has brought so much energy and positivity to our group over the years. While we’re sad to see him go, we understand that it was Alex’s desire to test himself in a new league in Europe. Alex is another example of the strong culture we have here in New York of identifying players and helping them develop and achieve their professional goals. We look forward to closely following Alex’s career and we wish him all the best in Spain.”

In the 2021 MLS Cup run, Alex scored the winning goal in the First Round of the playoffs against Atlanta United in Yankee Stadium to earn a place in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. In Foxborough, the Peruvian scored the winning penalty against New England and the championship winning penalty against Portland in MLS Cup. Meanwhile in the 2022 Campeones Cup, Alex opened the score for NYCFC in the first minutes to help the team win 2-0 against Liga MX champions Atlas F.C.

A stalwart on defense, Alex became a fan favorite earning himself the nickname “Ironman” for his consistency and durability on the pitch. His performances earned him an MLS All-Star nod in 2022 and was a finalist for MLS Defender of the Year. While at his time in the Bronx, Alex was called up to the Peruvian National Team where he made 26 appearances while donning The Bronx Blue.

Everyone at the Club would like to wish Alex all the best in Spain.

Hyman, Stamkos and Zegras Named NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the Week

0

NEW YORK – Edmonton Oilers left wing Zach Hyman, Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos and Anaheim Ducks center Trevor Zegras have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Jan. 22.

FIRST STAR – ZACH HYMAN, LW, EDMONTON OILERS

Hyman paced the NHL with 4-5—9 and a +8 rating, recording multiple points in each of his three outings to help the Oilers (27-18-3, 57 points) post a perfect week and extend their overall winning streak to six contests dating to Jan. 11. He registered 1-2—3, including an assist on Warren Foegele’s decisive goal, in a 5-2 triumph over the Seattle Kraken Jan. 17. Hyman then scored twice (his 19th career multi-goal performance) in a 5-3 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning Jan. 19. He capped the week with his second career four-point game (1-3—4), factoring on all four Edmonton goals in a 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks Jan. 21. The 30-year-old Hyman has points in five straight contests dating to Jan. 13 (4-8—12), including multiple points in a career-best four consecutive games since Jan. 14 (4-7—11). He ranks 14th in the NHL with 24-32—56 overall in 2022-23 (47 GP), already surpassing his career high of 27-27—54 set in 76 appearances last season (his first with the Oilers).

SECOND STAR – STEVEN STAMKOS, C, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

Stamkos, who became the 47th player in NHL history to reach the 500-goal milestone, shared the League lead with five goals in four contests (5-1—6) to guide the Lightning (29-15-1, 59 points) to a 2-2-0 week. He collected one assist as Tampa Bay snapped the Seattle Kraken’s eight-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory Jan. 16. Stamkos then potted his 11th career hat trick, highlighted by his 500th goal, in a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks Jan. 18. He became the eighth player in League history to reach the milestone and record a hat trick in the same game – and first since Mats Sundin on Oct. 14, 2006 (w/ TOR). Stamkos finished the week with one goal in each of his next two contests, a 5-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers Jan. 19 and a 6-3 defeat versus the Calgary Flames Jan. 21. The 32-year-old Lightning captain and two-time Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner sits 16th in the League with 23-31—54 in 45 total outings this season.

THIRD STAR – TREVOR ZEGRAS, C, ANAHEIM DUCKS

Zegras ranked second in the NHL with 4-4—8 in four games as the Ducks (13-29-5, 31 points) went 1-2-1. He notched 1-1—2 in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins Jan. 16, followed by one assist in a 5-2 defeat against the Philadelphia Flyers Jan. 17. Zegras then posted 1-1—2 (including the game-winning goal) in a 5-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets Jan. 19 before closing the week with 2-1—3 (his fifth career three-point performance) in a 6-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres Jan. 21. The 21-year-old Zegras, who finished second in Calder Memorial Trophy voting in 2021-22 (23-38—61 in 75 GP), leads Anaheim with 17 goals and 40 points through 47 total contests this season (17-23—40).

Padres sign DH Nelson Cruz to one-year contract

0

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have signed seven-time All-Star Nelson Cruz to a one-year contract, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

Cruz, 42, batted .234 (105-for-448) in 124 games for the Washington Nationals as the club’s designated hitter in 2022. He recorded a team-leading 64 RBI and posted 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 50 runs scored, and 49 walks. On July 20, 2022, the World Baseball Classic named Cruz the general manager of the 2023 Dominican Republic team, making him the first active player in the tournament’s history to be named a general manager. Cruz recorded the 2,000th hit of his Major League career against the Padres on August 30th with a single in the eighth inning off Adrian Morejon, and he will reunite with former teammates Manny Machado (2014 with Baltimore) and Juan Soto (2022 with Washington).

Over 18 Major League seasons, the four-time Silver Slugger Award winner and 2021 Roberto Clemente Award recipient has posted a .274 average (2,018-for-7,358) with a .344 OBP, .515 SLG, 367 doubles, 14 triples, 459 home runs, 1,302 RBI, 1,081 runs scored, and 732 walks in 2,006 career games between the Milwaukee Brewers (2005), Texas Rangers (2006-13), Baltimore Orioles (2014), Seattle Mariners (2015-18), Minnesota Twins (2019-21), Tampa Bay Rays (2021), and Nationals (2022). Since turning 30 on July 1, 2010, Cruz has hit 394 home runs, the 5th most in MLB history of any player since they turned 30, trailing just Barry Bonds (509), Babe Ruth (430), Rafael Palmeiro (414), and Hank Aaron (413). His 459 home runs are second most among all active players, trailing just Miguel Cabrera (507 HR), and his 2,006 career games played are third most among active players behind Cabrera (2,699 games) and Robinson Canó (2,267 games). The two-time Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award winner (2017 & ’19) has the third-most home runs (245) all-time as a DH, behind only David Ortiz (485) and Frank Thomas (269). A career .274 hitter (1,036-for-3,776) as a DH, he was named to the inaugural 2019 All-MLB First Team and the 2020 All-MLB Second Team as the DH. The 2011 ALCS MVP winner with the Rangers has made seven-career Postseason runs, including two World Series appearances (2010-11 with Texas). In 50 games between 12 Postseason series, he posted a .278 (52-for-187) average with a .348 OBP, .631 SLG, .979 OPS, 12 doubles, 18 home runs, and 38 RBI.

MBB-D2: Ouachita Baptist Tigers (7-7) at Henderson State Reddies (8-8)

REDDIES REPORT
Two of Franck Kamgain’s 13 points against the Boll Weevils came with 17 seconds remaining in regulation as the Kansas City, Missouri native’s late-game heroics helped HSU defeat UAM, 66-65. Henderson shot a season-high 54.3 percent from the field as Malik Riddle and Tomislav Miholjcic spearheaded the efficiency efforts, going 7-of-9 (77.8%) and 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the field, respectively.

Riddle’s 16 points was a season-high for the graduate student guard Saturday. During the first 13 games of the season, the former Morehead St. transfer averaged 8.5 points and was shooting 30.8 percent from the field. In the last three contests, he is averaging 15 points and shooting at a 53.1 percent clip. An area where Riddle has been consistent all season has been at the free-throw line, where he is shooting a team-high 82.1 percent.

Henderson St. is making 5.5 three-pointers per game this season, which is 10th in the conference. That average has served as a good barometer for HSU this season. In games where the Reddies have made six or more three-pointers, they are 5-1. When making five or less, they are 3-7. Ouachita Baptist is allowing 7.4 made triples per game.

Saturday’s victory improved the Reddies to 5-5 in conference play as they are tied for sixth in the league standings with none other than Ouachita Baptist. The next six days will feature three opponents who are all either tied or within one game of HSU on either side in league play, all of which will be played away from the Duke Wells Center, where Henderson is 3-4.

The Reddies have not lost to their arch-rival since the 2017-18 season and haven’t dropped a road game to OUA since the year prior in 2016-17, although the last four meetings have all been decided by single digits. In head coach Jimmy Elgas’ time at Henderson, the Reddies have won five in a row across the street and nine straight overall. In the all-time series, HSU holds the narrow edge, 108-107.

SCOUTING OUACHITA BAPTIST
The Tigers have had their own fair share of close games recently, with their last four times out on the court having been decided by eight points or less. Ouachita came away winners in three of those four while losing its most recent contest at Arkansas Tech, 64-58. The purple-and-gold have been much better at home than on the road this season, holding a 5-2 record compared to 2-4 and 0-1 in neutral site games.

Ouachita Baptist boasts three players who are among the Top-15 scoring leaders in the GAC. Ma’Darius Hobson leads the trio with 15.2 points per game while shooting 50.3 percent from the field. Tylar Haynes, the team’s second leading scorer at 14.1 points, paces the Tigers with 6.5 rebounds per game. Head coach Dennis Nutt has five guys who are averaging over 24.5 minutes per game, while HSU has only three guys seeing the same amount of time.

As a team, Ouachita Baptist is eighth in the conference in both scoring offense (71.3 points per game) and scoring defense (73.1 ppg). Henderson St. is 10th in scoring offense (69.2) and fifth in scoring defense (68.1). The Tigers are last in the GAC in opponent field-goal percentage (48.7) and second-to-last in opponent three-point field-goal percentage (37.5). In the case of a close game, OUA is shooting 75.2 percent from the free-throw line while HSU is shooting 71.0 percent.

Monday night’s showdown will be a tilt between two of the top teams in the Mountain West, as the Pack and the Lobos are each currently tied for second place in the conference standings with a mark of 5-2 in Mountain West play.

Nevada Men’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Alford will be taking on his former team, as he served as the Head Coach of the Lobos from 2007-2013. Alford owns a perfect record of 6-0 against New Mexico as the Head Coach of the Wolf Pack, and he will look to make it 7-0 on Monday night.

Nevada is coming off a loss on the road against Boise State this past Tuesday; but, the Pack have been exceptional in contests following a loss this season. They are 4-0 in games following a loss entering Monday night’s matchup, winning those games by an average margin of 8.8 points.

Nevada will once again seek to have a strong performance coming off of a loss and remain undefeated at home Monday night with a win over New Mexico.

Jarod Lucas led the Pack in scoring this past Tuesday against the Broncos, putting up 15 points in the game while knocking down 3-8 shots from behind the arc. Lucas continues to pace the Wolf Pack offense this season, as he ranks first on the team and fourth in the Mountain West in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game.

Lucas also ranks third in the conference in total points (336), second in made 3-pointers (54), and fourth in free throw percentage (84.6%). Lucas has scored in double figures in an incredible 18 straight games and in 19 of 20 games overall this season. The senior guard has also managed to hit multiple 3-pointers in 17 games this season, including draining three or more shots from behind the arc in 11 contests.

Kenan Blackshear chipped in 12 points against the Broncos while also recording two steals in the game. Blackshear has achieved double figures in scoring in 11 straight games and in 17 of 20 contests this season.

The senior point guard continues to rank in the top-15 of the Mountain West in a plethora of individual statistical categories.

Blackshear currently ranks third in the league in both total assists (92) and assists per game (4.6), seventh in steals per game (1.6), eighth in free throw percentage (80.9%), 10th in scoring (14.6 PPG), and 12th in minutes per game (31.9). Blackshear has dished out at least three assists in all but two contests for Nevada this season.

Will Baker also scored 12 points against Boise State, and the redshirt junior ranks third on the team in scoring at 12.9 points per game. Baker has knocked down 34.2 percent of his 3-point attempts this season, and he currently ranks third in the Mountain West in free throw percentage (85.7%).

Freshman forward Darrion Williams led the Pack in rebounding for the 12th time this season against Boise State, pulling down 10 boards to eclipse double-digit rebounds for the seventh time this season. Williams ranks sixth overall in the Mountain West in rebounding, pulling down 7.3 boards per contest, in addition to ranking ninth in steals (1.6 SPG).

Redshirt freshman Nick Davidson chipped in eight points and three rebounds off the bench for the Pack in the game against Boise State, marking the fifth straight game that Davidson has scored at least eight points. Davidson currently ranks first on the team and seventh in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (42.6%). Davidson ranks fourth on the team in scoring this season at 8.5 points per game, and he has elevated his play against Mountain West competition, as he is averaging 10.6 points per game on a sensational 58.1 percent shooting from the field, 44.4 percent from behind the arc, and 88.9 percent at the free throw line in conference play.

Junior forward Tre Coleman had another spectacular individual defensive performance against the Broncos, limiting Boise State’s leading scorer, Marcus Shaver Jr., to just five points on 2-9 shooting from the field as the primary defender. Coleman also added seven points on 3-4 shooting from the field and five rebounds in the contest. Coleman will need to have another strong defensive performance against New Mexico if the Pack hope to earn a victory.

As a team, Nevada continues to rank at the top of the conference in a multitude of defensive statistical categories. The Pack rank second in opponent field goal percentage (40.8%), fourth in opponent points per game (65.3 PPG), and fifth in opponent 3-point field goal percentage (33.0%), defensive rebounding (26.4 per game), and turnovers forced (253).

Nevada faces a difficult challenge Monday evening against a New Mexico team that holds an overall record of 18-2 this season.

Scouting New Mexico

New Mexico has had an impressive campaign hus far, earning marquee wins over Saint Mary’s, San Diego State, and most recently Boise State this past Friday.

The Lobos boast one of the most high-powered offenses in the country, as they currently rank first in the Mountain West and 16th in the nation in points per game (81.9).

New Mexico also holds the third-best field goal percentage in the conference, as they are shooting 48.6 percent from the field this season.

The Lobos are led by a three-headed attack consisting of Jamal Mashburn Jr., Jaelen House, and Morris Udeze, as the trio is responsible for 63 percent of New Mexico’s scoring this year.

Mashburn, a transfer from Minnesota, currently leads the league in scoring at 18.6 points per game on 45 percent shooting from the field and 40.6 percent from behind the arc.

House has combined with Mashburn to form one of the most dangerous backcourt duos in the country, as he currently ranks third in the Mountain West in scoring, putting up 17.4 points per game on 46.6 percent shooting from the field and a 40.7 percent mark from three. House has also been a force on the defensive end of the court for New Mexico, as he leads the conference and ranks fifth in the country in steals per game (2.8 SPG).

Udeze has been dominant in the paint for the Lobos this season, as the Wichita State transfer ranks first in the conference in rebounding (8.5 RPG) and seventh in scoring (15.7 PPG).

As phenomenal as New Mexico has been on offense, they have struggled defensively at times, as they rank eighth in the league in opponent points per game (69.5 PPG).

The Lobos have dominated the glass all season, and they lead the Mountain West in rebounding, averaging 39.5 boards per game.

The Pack will need to limit production from Mashburn Jr. and House and keep New Mexico off the glass while having a solid offensive performance if they hope to move to 16-5 overall and 10-0 at Lawlor Events Center this season.

Nevada and New Mexico have faced off 19 times throughout history, as the Pack holds a 12-7 advantage in the series. Nevada has won seven consecutive contests against the Lobos, most recently beating them by a score of 79-72 in the 2022 Mountain West Tournament.
