0

All five players, in addition to 19 within the organization, have received invites to Spring Training camp

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has agreed to terms with right-handed pitchers Ian Kennedy and Reyes Moronta, left-handed pitcher Danny Duffy, and outfielders Clint Frazier and Travis Jankowski on minor league contracts with an invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.

Kennedy, 38, had a 4-7 record with 10 saves and a 5.36 ERA (30 ER/50.1 IP) in 57 relief appearances with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season. He begins his second stint with the Rangers after recording 16 saves and a 2.51 ERA (9 ER/32.1 IP) in 32 relief appearances in 2021 before joining the Philadelphia Phillies in a six-player trade deadline deal. The right-handed pitcher owns a 4.30 ERA with 66 saves and 194 strikeouts (9.5 SO per 9.0 innings ratio) in 189 games since moving to the bullpen prior to the 2019 season. In 16 Major League seasons, he owns a 104-113 record with 66 saves, a 4.14 ERA (868 ER/1888.0 IP) and 1,754 strikeouts in 481 games (290 starts) with the New York Yankees (2007-09), Diamondbacks (2010-13, 2022), San Diego Padres (2013-15), Kansas City Royals (2016-20), Rangers (2021) and Phillies (2021). Kennedy, who was selected by the Yankees in the first round (21st overall) of the 2006 MLB Draft out of the University of Southern California, finished fourth in the N.L. Cy Young balloting in 2011 after going 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA (71 ER/222.0 IP) with the Diamondbacks.

Moronta, 30, went 2-2 with two saves, a 4.30 ERA (18 ER/37.2 IP), and 38 strikeouts in 39 relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks last season. The right-hander also appeared in 11 minor league contests with Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 1-0 with two saves, a 2.70 ERA (3 ER/10.0 IP), and 17 strikeouts. This offseason, he made seven relief appearances for Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Winter League, over which he compiled a 1-0 record, 4.50 ERA (3 ER/6.0 IP), and five strikeouts against seven walks. The Santiago, Dominican Republic native was originally signed by the San Francisco Giants as a non-drafted free agent on June 2, 2011, and has produced a lifetime 10-11 record, three saves, 3.02 ERA (57 ER/170.0 IP), and 10.6 strikeouts per 9.0 innings figure across 175 Major League relief appearances with the Giants (2017-21), Dodgers (2022), and Diamondbacks (2022). Moronta played under current Rangers manager Bruce Bochy in his first three seasons with the Giants (2017-19), combining to go 8-9 with one save and a 2.66 ERA (38 ER/128.1 IP) over 132 relief outings during that span.

Duffy, 34, did not pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season while recovering from left elbow surgery. The lefthander last appeared in 13 games (12 starts) for the Kansas City Royals during the 2021 season, going 4-3 with a 2.51 ERA (17 ER/61.0 IP) and 65 strikeouts before being traded to the Dodgers on July 29, 2021 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Zach Willeman, but he missed the rest of the season with a left flexor strain. The 2015 World Series winner spent 11 seasons with the Royals, posting a 68-68 record with a 3.95 ERA (514 ER/1172.1 IP) and 1,048 strikeouts. Originally drafted in the third round of the 2007 MLB Draft out of Cabrillo High School, Duffy recorded a career-best 12-3 with a 3.51 ERA (70 ER/79.2 IP) and 188 strikeouts in 42 games (26 starts) during the 2016 season.

Frazier, 28, batted .216 with three doubles, one RBI, and one stolen base in 19 games for the Chicago Cubs last season before being designated for assignment on June 10. He spent the rest of the season with Triple-A Iowa, batting .190 with eight doubles, six home runs, and 35 RBI in 66 games. The right-handed hitter owns a .238 batting average with 44 doubles, five triples, 29 home runs, and 98 RBI in 247 career games with the New York Yankees (2017-21) and Cubs (2022). Frazier owns a career .931 OPS and a .270 average with runners in scoring position. Originally selected by Cleveland in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Loganville (Ga.) High School, Frazier has predominantly seen time in right field (106 games, 92 starts) and left field (106 games, 88 starts) and owns a .974 fielding percentage (8 E/309 TC) in the outfield.

Jankowski, 31, batted .164 with two RBI and three stolen bases over 44 games between the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners in 2022. The outfielder opened the season with the Mets, was placed on the 10-day Injured List from May 27-July 10 due to a fourth metacarpal fracture in his left hand, and was designated for assignment on July 29. He was claimed off waivers by the Mariners on Aug. 1, released on Aug. 10 after appearing in just one game for the club, and eventually returned to New York as a minor league free agent on Aug. 16. A former first round selection (44th overall) by the San Diego Padres in the 2012 MLB Draft, Jankowski has recorded a .236 batting average, nine home runs, 54 RBI, and 72 stolen bases over 470 games in his Major League career with the Padres (2015-19), Cincinnati Reds (2020), Philadelphia Phillies (2021), Mets (2022), and Mariners (2022).

CALGARY FLAMES NOTES:

CALGARY FLAMES [1] vs. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS [5]
The Calgary Flames finished up a four-game homestand by welcoming the Chicago Blackhawks to the Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday night. The Blackhawks drew first blood late in the first with Taylor Raddysh netting his 13th of the season. But in the dying embers of the opening period, Jonathan Huberdeau made a slick move around Jake McCabe and deked out Jaxson Stauber to burry his 10th of the season in style and draw the Flames level after 20. In the second, a Boris Katchouk shot would take a deflection to restore Chicago’s lead and they would add two more goals in the frame to go up 4-1 through 40. The Flames tried to battle back in the third, outshooting Chicago 18-6, but would ultimately fall 5-1.

Calgary and Seattle would trade goals in the second with Jamie Oleksiak scoring just 1:14 into the period to give the Kraken the lead before Nazem Kadri would tie the game on the power play and the clubs remained deadlocked at twos through 40. Jonathan Huberdeau would record the only tally of the third for his first game-winning goal as a Flame while Dan Vladar turned aside all six final frame shots he faced, and the Flames won 3-2.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
• Tonight’s matchup is the final game the Kraken and the Flames will play against each other this season. The teams have previously split their first two meetings – the Kraken defeated the Flames 5-4 on Nov. 1 in Calgary and fell to them 3-2 in Seattle on Dec. 28.

• Entering play Thursday, the Kraken led the Pacific Division in points (61, tied) and points percentage (.649). The team’s plus-27 goal differential this season also led the Pacific Division entering play Thursday and ranked eighth in the NHL.

• The Kraken have not allowed a power-play goal for five consecutive games, going a perfect 13-for-13 during that span. If they were to remain perfect on the penalty kill tonight, it would tie the franchise record for consecutive games without allowing a power-play goal. The team previously went six straight games from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11 without allowing a power-play goal. Entering play Thursday, the Kraken were one of three teams (St. Louis, Washington) to remain perfect on the penalty kill since Jan. 16, the start of the Kraken’s streak.

• With 47 games played, the Kraken have already surpassed their win (27) and point (60) totals from last season.

• Since the start of the New Year, the Kraken are leading the league in wins (10, tied), points (21), goals (55) and goals per game (4.23). They are one of only two teams (Edmonton) to be averaging four or more goals per game in 2023.

• When Morgan Geekie and Daniel Sprong are on the ice together during five-on-five play this season, the Kraken are outscoring their opponents 14-6 according to Natural Stat Trick.

• Matty Beniers has drawn 13 penalties and been assessed one penalty this season. His plus-12 penalty differential was tied for the seventh-best mark in the NHL entering play Thursday.

• Entering play Thursday, Yanni Gourde was tied for 12th in the NHL with 21 penalties drawn this season.

• Despite only playing in 47 games this season, the Kraken are the first team to have scored at least eight goals in a game four different times since the Pittsburgh Penguins also has four eight-goal games in 2011-12.
