NBA Preview: Utah Jazz (29-30) at Memphis Grizzlies (34-22)

0

Following a 119-109 road loss to the Boston Celtics, the Memphis Grizzlies will return home Wednesday to face a high-powered Utah Jazz team that’s scored at least 100 points in 26 straight games.

The Grizzlies are 23-5 at home as opposed to 11-17 on the road. After the Portland Trail Blazers snapped their eight-game home winning streak on Feb. 1, Memphis will look to make it three consecutive victories in the friendly confines against the Jazz.

Ja Morant is having an MVP-type season for Memphis. He’s averaging 27.5 points, 8.3 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game. Desmond Bane (21.4 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 4.2 apg) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (16.7 ppg, 6.6 rpg) are also having outstanding seasons.

The Grizzlies also added Luke Kennard from the Los Angeles Clippers at the trade deadline. A 42.7 percent 3-point shooter for his career, Kennard scored just four points in his team debut against Boston.

Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins is still planning out how to work him in.

Steven Adams (knee) will miss his 11th straight game, and the Grizzlies have sorely missed the big man’s production.

Brandon Clarke (10.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg), Santi Aldama (9.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and Xavier Tillman (5.2 ppg, 3.9 rpg) have supplied Memphis with solid production in the paint with Adams out.

But the Grizzlies have had trouble containing the NBA’s best big men with their starting center on the shelf. And that could be the case once again dealing with Utah center Lauri Markkanen.

Markkanen is averaging 24.9 points and 8.6 rebounds and is fresh off a double-double (29 points, 11 rebounds) in a 123-117 win over the Indiana Pacers. He hit four free throws in the final 14.2 seconds to secure the win for the Jazz.

Jordan Clarkson also scored 29 in the win over the Pacers and enters Wednesday’s game averaging 21.1 points, 4.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. He hit a clutch 3-pointer and another important jumper in the waning moments against Indiana, which helped the team earn its second road victory in its last three games.

In addition to Markkanen and Clarkson, Collin Sexton (14.6 ppg, 2.9 apg) and Kelly Olynyk (11.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg) are talented scorers who can make game-changing plays at any time.

With Adams out for Memphis, the combination of Markkanen and rookie Walker Kessler (8.2 ppg, 7.6 rpg) could pose major problems for the Grizzlies in the paint.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (32-26) at Brooklyn Nets (33-24)

0

Avoiding the play-in round is a priority for any team, and the outcome of the final contest before the All-Star break could determine whether the Brooklyn Nets or Miami Heat end up in that situation.

Both teams are currently clear of the play-in round, but a slump could easily knock them down in the Eastern Conference standings as the Nets look to increase their hold on fifth place when they host the sixth-place Heat on Wednesday night.

Brooklyn is clear of the play-in game mostly because of what it achieved between Dec. 7 and Jan. 8 when it went on a 12-game winning streak and won 14 of 15. The last of those games was a 102-101 win at Miami on Jan. 8 when Kevin Durant sprained his right knee while colliding with Jimmy Butler during the third quarter.

The Nets were 27-13 when Durant was injured and second in the East with a one-game deficit behind the Boston Celtics. Brooklyn is 6-11 in the 17 games since and has dropped to fifth but 3 1/2 games behind fourth-place Cleveland entering Tuesday’s action.

During Brooklyn’s 15-game tear, it scored at least 120 points eight times but since then it has topped 120 only six times and none while losing four of its past five games. The recent slide comes amidst the transformation of a roster that featured Durant and Kyrie Irving to newcomers Spencer Dinwiddie, Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith, who were obtained when the stars sought trades from Brooklyn.

The Nets began their new era with a 116-105 win over Chicago on Thursday but struggled offensively in their next two games. After scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter of a 101-98 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday, Brooklyn scored 45 points after halftime and was outscored 44-26 over the final 14-plus minutes of Monday’s 124-106 loss to the host New York Knicks.

Dinwiddie scored 28 points but 20 were in Brooklyn’s 61-point opening half. Johnson added 14 but Bridges was held to seven after getting 23 Saturday.

Miami’s roster situation is not about adding new pieces but health. The Heat are 1 1/2 games behind the Nets and a half-game up on seventh-place New York enetering Tuesday.

Miami had 10 players available Monday when it dropped to 20-12 in games decided by five or fewer points in a 112-108 home loss to the Denver Nuggets. Besides missing Kyle Lowry (sore left knee) and Victor Oladipo (ankle), the Heat were without Tyler Herro due to a knee bruise that may prevent him from suiting up Wednesday.

Butler scored 24 points and Max Strus finished with 23. Bam Adebayo added 19 but his two rebounds were a season-low and may have contributed to Miami allowing 58 points in the paint after entering Monday allowing 44.9 points inside.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks (32-27) at Atlanta Hawks (29-29)

0

The New York Knicks will look for their fifth victory in six games when they travel to play the Atlanta Hawks, the team directly behind them in the Eastern Conference, on Wednesday in the final game before the All-Star break.

The Knicks are seventh in the Eastern Conference and hold a 2½-game lead over the Hawks. But Atlanta has won two of three meetings against the Knicks this season and could secure the tiebreaker against New York with a victory. A win by New York would provide further distance from the Hawks and pull it closer to avoiding the play-in tournament.

The Knicks defeated the Brooklyn Nets 124-106 on Monday and have won seven of their last 11. The Hawks are coming off a disappointing 144-138 loss at Charlotte on Monday. Charlotte, which had lost seven straight and has only 16 wins, beat Atlanta for the third time.

In addition to the stellar play of All-Star Julius Randle (24.7 points, 10.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists), the Knicks continue to get an outstanding effort from Jalen Brunson (23.9 points, 6.2 assists). Brunson, who is not on the All-Star roster, had 40 points in the win over Brooklyn.

Randle has totaled 66 points and 26 rebounds in the last two meetings with Atlanta.

New York’s acquisition of Josh Hart from Portland is already paying dividends. Hart, who averages 9.9 points and 8.1 rebounds, scored a season-high 27 against the Nets.

Atlanta got 12 points and five rebounds from Saddiq Bey in his debut with the team. Bey got the start when John Collins missed the game with a hip flexor injury. Bey was acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline.

The Atlanta defense struggled against a Charlotte club that scored a season-high 144 points — 32.2 above its season average — and made 20 3-pointers.

NBA Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers (38-22) at Philadelphia Sixer (37-19)

0

The red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers would probably rather not see the league halt action for the All-Star break.

Cleveland will look for its eighth consecutive victory when it visits the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.

Since falling 100-97 to the Miami Heat on Jan. 31, the Cavaliers have defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, New Orleans Pelicans, Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs.

Donovan Mitchell led the way with a stellar 41-point performance in a 117-109 win over the Spurs on Monday.

But Mitchell was far from satisfied with the victory.

Mitchell paused and continued with the criticism after the game which sent the Spurs reeling to their 13th consecutive loss.

Jarrett Allen added 17 points and 11 rebounds, Darius Garland chipped in 16 points and seven assists and Evan Mobley had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Veteran guard Danny Green, who was drafted by the Cavaliers in 2009, is expected to sign with the team once he clears waivers. The Houston Rockets waived Green after a trade deadline deal.

The Sixers have also been playing well and will look for their fourth straight win heading into the break.

Philadelphia had little trouble dispatching the Rockets 123-104 on Monday behind James Harden’s 28 points and 10 assists. Tyrese Maxey added 26 points, six assists and five rebounds off the bench and Joel Embiid scored 23 points.

After a bit of a scoring slump, Maxey has regained his form and was aggressive from the start on both ends.

Newly acquired Jalen McDaniels contributed eight points and five rebounds in his first game in front of the Sixers’ fans.

The Sixers signed center Dewayne Dedmon and he’s expected to be available to face the Cavaliers. The 7-footer was previously with the Miami Heat.

NBA Preview: Chicago Bulls (26-31) at Indiana Pacers (25-34)

0

The Chicago Bulls fell out of positioning for the Eastern Conference play-in tournament with their latest defeat.

The Indiana Pacers are just two games back of their rivals despite an extended slump of their own.

One team will earn a much-needed victory when Indiana hosts Chicago on Wednesday night while the other will go back to the drawing board. Again.

Chicago hopes to have leading scorer DeMar DeRozan in tow. DeRozan exited in the late stages of Monday’s 100-91 home loss to Orlando with a right hip injury he said has been bothering him for more than a month.

DeRozan hasn’t eclipsed the 20-point mark in four straight games, all Bulls defeats, and is averaging 25.4 points a game. That’s 1.5 points per game higher than Zach LaVine, who paced Chicago with 26 points Monday.

Chicago’s Nikola Vucevic has recorded a double-double in nine straight games, the longest active streak in the NBA. Still, the Bulls have failed to top 91 points three times during the skid and are shooting just 20.8 percent from 3-point range in their past five games after a 3-for-21 effort against Orlando.

Indiana has lost five in a row and 16 of 18. One of the victories in that span came Jan. 24 in a 116-110 win against the Bulls.

After falling behind by 12 in the fourth quarter against visiting Utah on Monday, the Pacers climbed to within two points with 3:06 to play but came no closer.

Tyrese Haliburton sparked Indiana with a double-double of 30 points and 12 assists. Haliburton scored 25 points after intermission and shot 50 percent from the floor for the game.

Bennedict Mathurin followed with 21 points in 32 minutes off the bench. Five Pacers finished in double figures, but the team lost the rebounding battle 46-32. Big man Myles Turner missed the game with lower back soreness.

Buddy Hield struggled from long range, shooting just 2-for-11 from deep, but still leads the league in made 3-pointers with 224.

The season series between the Pacers and Bulls is tied at one game apiece, with the teams next set to meet on March 5 in Chicago. The Bulls have won four of the past five meetings.

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs (14-44) at Charlotte Hornets (16-43)

0

The Charlotte Hornets have something to build on. With just one game before the All-Star break, they’ll take momentum any way they can get it.

And they’re about to encounter a team in worse shape than themselves Wednesday night as the visiting San Antonio Spurs are mired in a 13-game losing streak.

Charlotte not only ended a seven-game skid by topping the Atlanta Hawks 144-138 on Monday night, but did so in style.

The Hornets had their best offensive performance of the season in terms of points (144), 3-point baskets (20), 3-point percentage (54.1), field-goal percentage (63.1) and assists (34).

It was the second-largest single-game point total in team history.

But perhaps the Hornets discovered something else that might work if they can do it again. That’s playing with a lead.

Third-year guard LaMelo Ball has moved into seventh place on the Hornets’ all-time list for 3-pointers with 435. He has a franchise-record 47 consecutive games with at least one 3.

Oddly, the Hornets were also talking about a defensive play. Rookie center Mark Williams rejected a shot from Atlanta star Trae Young during a key moment.

The Spurs will play their sixth consecutive road game before heading to the All-Star break. Their latest malfunction came with Monday night’s 117-109 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Before the layoff, the Spurs have another chance to monitor the development of rookie guard Malaki Branham. He has averaged 17.2 points per game in seven February games. The 19-year-old has made an impression on Popovich.

Keldon Johnson has led the Spurs in scoring in four of the last five games. The exception during that stretch came when Devonte Graham, a former Charlotte guard, scored 31 points in a double-overtime game at Detroit.

These teams haven’t met since the season opener when the Hornets won 129-102 at San Antonio. For Charlotte, that game included 13 points from Kelly Oubre Jr., who has been out with a hand injury, and 12 points from Mason Plumlee, who was traded last week.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Pride defender Carrie Lawrence has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in her left knee and will be out indefinitely, the Club announced today. The injury was sustained during the Pride’s training camp at Port St. Lucie, and ultimately confirmed by the Club’s official medical team at Orlando Health.

Boxing Fight Card Preview: David Adeleye (9-0, 9 KO’s) vs Dmitri Bezus (10-0, 9 KO’s)

0

Mark Chamberlain, the IBF EUROPEAN lightweight champion, and David Adeleye, a heavyweight contender, will both be in the spotlight as Queensberry returns to York Hall on Friday, February 17, live on BT Sport.

The 24-year-old Chamberlain, who is 11-0 (7 KOs), defeated Marc Vidal in a lopsided 10-round victory at Wembley to win his title, but he was forced to miss a November defense due to a shoulder issue.

The Waterlooville puncher will face former Italian champion Vairo Lenti, who is 10-4-1 (1 KO), has won his previous three fights, and last competed in July.

Adeleye, 10-0 (9 KOs), only competed twice last year due to injuries, but he was still able to increase his KO total by two by eliminating Chris Healey and Elvis Garcia.

The Ladbroke Grove heavyweight will compete against another unbeaten boxer Dmytro Bezus of Ukraine, who resides in Liga, Latvia. Bezus is 10-0 (5 KOs).

The 6-foot-6-inch 33-year-old last competed in October of last year, defeating Lukas Wacker in the fourth round at the Arena Riga.

Henry Turner, a fashionable super lightweight who won the WBC International Silver championship in November in Dubai, will defend his title for the first time over ten rounds at York Hall.

After scoring two quick knockouts in his last two fights, exciting super featherweight prospect Royston Barney-Smith (4-0, 2 KOs) will be aiming for a knockout treble in his fifth four-round contest, while Northampton super welterweight Carl Fail (7-0, 2) will compete in his second bout under the Queensberry banner. Following a stunning six-round victory over Mohamed Cherif Benchadi in Telford, Nottingham light heavyweight Ezra Taylor (4-0, 3) will compete in another six-round contest against Loughton super bantamweight Adan Mohamed (7-0, 2). Amaar Akbar (4-0), a super lightweight from Batley, and Aloys Junior (2-1, 2), a cruiserweight from Penge, will square off in four-round bouts.

Mark Chamberlain and David Adeleye will get top billing at York Hall thanks to this opportunity, according to promoter Frank Warren. After missing out on fights due to injuries last year, “I expect both of them to really push on this year and reinforce their standing as two of the top prospects in the country. This will be a significant night for them.

“I am optimistic that Mark and David would be successful in their quest to find British titles in the near future, and I think it is a realistic goal for both of them.

“Since Henry Turner won the WBC title in the Middle East, I am excited to see him step it up in his tenth professional fight. Carl Fail won’t be long until he’s competing for the crown, too.

“Royston Barney-Smith is currently demonstrating his true high level of skill in the ring. This young man will be a major force in the years to come. I can’t wait for him to start acting again.

I’m eager to follow the development of Ezra Taylor, Amaar Akbar, Adan Mohamed, and Aloys Jr., who are all displaying encouraging traits and are swiftly emerging as names to watch.
