NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (11-21) at Houston Rockets (9-21)

0

Rockets attempt to find themselves again vs. Magic

Throughout a spate of early-season losses that resulted in a 1-9 record, Houston coach Stephen Silas expressed unwavering support for the Rockets’ will to win.

Despite entering their 15th game on the schedule with only two wins, the Rockets had shown a moxie that didn’t match their record. Rarely did they relent to the numerous setbacks, and ultimately their effort yielded the sort of results Silas had longed to witness.

But in the fifth game of a seven-game homestand that continues on Wednesday against the Orlando Magic, the Rockets succumbed to discouragement.

For a second consecutive game, they shot miserably from the perimeter, and when the San Antonio Spurs seemingly did not miss from behind the 3-point line on Monday, Houston cratered in the second half of a 124-105 loss.

The Rockets missed 26 of 29 3-pointers in a 12-point loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday. They followed that woeful shooting display by misfiring on 19 of 24 3-pointers against the Spurs, who conversely shot a scorching 17 of 34 from behind the arc. Outflanked and frustrated, the Rockets wilted and reverted to a submissive form rarely seen this season.

With only two games remaining on a homestand they hoped would set them on a positive path heading into the new year, the Rockets must uncover a means to rebuild their broken shots and collective spirit.

One of the Rockets’ two victories in the first month of the season came against the Magic, who have righted their own ship recently. Dejounte Murray had to make two free throws with 1.3 seconds remaining to lift the Atlanta Hawks to a 126-125 win on Monday that halted a six-game winning streak for Orlando.

The injury-riddled Magic have found their footing despite a rotation continually compromised by absences, with Wendell Carter Jr. (foot) and Jalen Suggs (ankle) the latest starters to be sidelined. Orlando has been bolstered by the return of Markelle Fultz, who is averaging 11.6 points and 5.1 assists since joining to rotation 11 games ago, and the emergence of Moritz Wagner, who has averaged 14.6 points and 7.4 rebounds while starting the last 10 contests.

Of the nine players averaging double figures in scoring for Orlando, three are currently unavailable, with Gary Harris part of the mix. Yet the Magic have found a way to press forward.

NBA Preview: Indiana Pacers (15-16) at Boston Celtics (22-9)

0

The Boston Celtics will look to bounce back from a winless weekend when they host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night.

Boston, which is two games into a seven-game homestand, has lost four of its last five games after falling to the Orlando Magic on Friday and Sunday.

Despite shooting a season-low 34.8 percent without Jayson Tatum (personal reasons), the Celtics fell just a possession short in Sunday’s 95-92 loss.

Boston has not eclipsed the 30 percent mark from 3-point range in their last four losses.

On Sunday, though, 22 of the team’s 31 field goals were assisted. Marcus Smart had seven of them, while Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 24 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Boston’s biggest bright spot was the return of big man Robert Williams, who had not played prior to Friday after September knee surgery.

The return of his thunderous dunks energized the crowd, but the Celtics were not able to take advantage of his 7.5 points per game and pick up a win.

Indiana has also lost four of five games, most recently falling to the streaking Knicks 109-106 on Sunday in New York. Forward Aaron Nesmith logged career highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds for his first NBA double-double.

Buddy Hield matched Nesmith’s 23 points, Tyrese Haliburton added 15 and 10 assists, and rookie Bennedict Mathurin also scored 15.

Nesmith was the Celtics’ top draft pick in 2020 (No. 14 overall) and helped the team reach the NBA Finals last summer, but he has averaged 8.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in a more regular role with Indiana. He has started 15 of his 27 games this season.

Nesmith was 9 of 12 from the field and 4 of 6 from 3-point range in 31 minutes during his career night.

Sunday concluded a stretch of 19 games in 33 days for Indiana.

This is the first meeting between the teams this season. The Celtics have won five of the last six contests, including three out of four last season.

NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (22-8) at Cleveland Cavaliers (21-11)

0

Following wins over Western Conference opponents, two of the top teams in the East meet as the Cleveland Cavaliers welcome in the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the charge for Milwaukee in New Orleans on Monday night, scoring 42 points in the Bucks’ 128-119 win over the Pelicans. Antetokounmpo also grabbed 10 rebounds while going 17 for 22 at the free-throw line.

Brook Lopez scored 30 points and Jrue Holiday chipped in 18 along with 11 assists. Winners of three of their past four games, the Bucks were able to withstand a career night from Jonas Valanciunas, who scored 37 points while shooting 7 for 10 from beyond the arc.

Cleveland, which has won four in a row, cruised to a 122-99 win over the Utah Jazz at home on Monday night in Donovan Mitchell’s first game against his former team.

Mitchell led the way for Cleveland with 23 points, but it was a balanced effort with seven Cavaliers scoring in double-figures. Jarrett Allen finished with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Entering Tuesday’s play, Antetokounmpo is the NBA’s fourth-leading scorer with 31 points a game while also leading Milwaukee with 11.1 rebounds. Holiday leads the team with 7.6 assists and 1.5 steals per game and Lopez leads the NBA with 2.7 blocks per game.

Mitchell has been the scoring leader in his first season with Cleveland, ranking eighth in the NBA at 29.3 points per game. Allen leads the team with 10.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game while Darius Garland ranks fifth in the NBA with eight assists per game.

Joe Ingles made his Bucks debut on Monday night after returning from an ACL injury he suffered with Utah in January. He finished 0 for 4 from the field with one rebound, one steal and two assists, including a lob to Antetokounmpo at the rim, in 15 minutes.

Khris Middleton missed his second straight game for Milwaukee on Monday due to right knee soreness. He is considered day-to-day, and Budenholzer hopes to get him back during the club’s current five-game road trip.

For Cleveland, Lamar Stevens is day-to-day with knee soreness. Dean Wade, Dylan Windler and Ricky Rubio all remain out with injuries.

Milwaukee is up 2-0 in the four-game season series with their Cavaliers, winning 113-98 and 117-102 in Milwaukee. The Bucks have a chance to clinch the series after the Cavaliers took three of four last season.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s announced 24 non-roster invitees for 2023 Spring Training today.  The list includes nine free agents signed to minor league contracts and 15 internal players.  The A’s also announced that Vimael Machín has elected free agency in lieu of an outright assignment and that former A’s catcher Ramon Hernandez has been hired as the A’s Major League Staff Assistant/Interpreter.

The list of free agents includes left-handed pitchers Jake Fishman and Garrett Williams, right-handed pitchers Jasseel De La Cruz and Rico Garcia, catcher Yohel Pozo, infielders Kevin Cron, Pablo Reyes and Tyler Wade and outfielder Trenton Brooks.

De La Cruz pitched for three different teams in the Atlanta farm system in 2022 and combined for a 1-3 record and a 7.18 ERA in 20 games, including five starts, with the GCL Braves, Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett.  Fishman spent most of the season at Triple-A Jacksonville where he went 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA and .194 opponents batting average in 33 relief appearances.  He also made his Major League debut with Miami, logging a 4.09 ERA in seven relief appearances.  Garcia was a combined 4-1 with three saves, a 1.99 ERA and .188 opponents batting average in 24 games, including three starts, with three different teams in the Baltimore farm system.  He also compiled a 4.50 ERA in six relief appearances with Baltimore and is 1-2 with a 6.38 ERA in 20 games, including one start, in three seasons with the Rockies (2019), Giants (2020) and Orioles (2022).  Williams split the year between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis in the Cardinals organization and was 1-0 with a 5.73 ERA in 28 games, including 15 starts.  He struck out 101 in 77.0 innings.
