NBA Preview: Houston Rockets (18-58) at Brooklyn Nets (40-35)

0

The Houston Rockets saved the New York Knicks on Monday, putting an end to their recent struggles and lifting them out of their slump.

When they take on the worst team in the Western Conference on Wednesday night, the struggling Brooklyn Nets want the same thing.

If the Miami Heat lose to Toronto on Tuesday, Brooklyn (40-35) may regain the lead in the play-in tournament. The Nets likewise will endeavor to stop a four-game home long string of failures.

Because it was unable to maintain a hot streak earlier this month, Brooklyn is in this position. From March 3 to 12, the Nets won five of six games, including a rout in Houston. However, they have lost six of their last seven games.

In each of those games, the Nets have been down by double digits, including Sunday, when they were outplayed for the final 30 or more minutes of a 119-106 Orlando loss. That defeat occurred on the second night of a doubleheader; In Miami on Saturday, Brooklyn came back from a 14-point deficit in the first half to win 129-100.

Mikal Bridges was the only Net who played well against Orlando. His 44 points were one shy of his career high set against Miami on Feb. 15 at home. While Bridges made 13 of his 22 attempts, the other four Brooklyn starters—Spencer Dinwiddie, Nic Claxton, Cameron Johnson, and Dorian Finney-Smith—were 9 of 35.

Dinwiddie shot 4-for-22 from the floor and was held to two points on 0-for-11 shooting against the Magic over the weekend.

Houston (18-58) is on a six-game losing streak heading to Brooklyn. In their 137-115 loss to the Knicks, the Rockets allowed at least 130 points for the third time in their most recent skid and for the 14th time all time.

Houston’s second-highest opposing field goal percentage of the season came from allowing the Knicks to shoot 58.1 percent. Additionally, this marked the 17th time that the Rockets allowed their opponents to shoot at least 50%.

Following a performance of 6-for-25 on Sunday in Cleveland, the Rockets shot 7-of-26 from behind the three-point line. Jalen Green had his 14th 30-point game of the season on Sunday, but against the Knicks, he only managed 19 points on 4-of-11 shooting.

Kevin Doorman Jr. driven the Rockets with 26 focuses against the Knicks, his fifth 20-point appearing in his beyond eight challenges.

NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (54-21) at Indiana Pacers (33-43)

0

The Milwaukee Bucks’ pursuit of the No. 1 position continues. They will face the play-in-hopeful Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night, earning the No. 1 overall seed in the East.

Without Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday, Milwaukee (54-21) got back on track on Monday night by defeating the Detroit Pistons 126-117 on the road.

The Bucks were led by Khris Middleton, who scored a season-high 34 points and had two double-doubles: Brook Lopez scored 24 points with 14 rebounds, and Bobby Portis scored 21 points with 14 rebounds. In addition, Jevon Carter scored 22 points, going 6-for-8 from long range.

After losing to the Dallas Mavericks 127-104 at home on Monday, Indiana (33-43) plays Milwaukee on a three-game losing streak. Bennedict Mathurin scored 26 points to lead the Pacers, who were without their star trio of Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Myles Turner.

Occasion was not with the group in that frame of mind to individual reasons while Antetokounmpo missed because of right knee irritation.

Before the game against Detroit, Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer said he wasn’t sure if point guard Jason Holiday would be able to play on Wednesday. However, the team didn’t list Holiday on Tuesday’s injury report. Middleton’s knee management is listed as questionable, while Antetokounmpo is listed as probable.

Meanwhile, Goran Dragic, who was acquired by Milwaukee and has since recovered from a knee injury, played his first game on Monday. Meyers Leonard, in any case, stays out with left calf touchiness.

Haliburton (ankle, elbow) and Chris Duarte (ankle) have been ruled out for Indiana, and Turner’s condition (ankle) is in question.

Indiana has removed Hield from its injury list due to a non-COVID illness.

Antetokounmpo drives the Bucks with 31.1 places and 11.7 bounce back per game. Brook Lopez blocks 2.5 shots per game and leads with 7.3 assists and 1.2 steals.

With 20.7 points, 10.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, Haliburton leads Indiana. Down low, Myles Turner leads the way with 18 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game, ranking second.

As the Pacers strive for a 2-2 record, this will be their final and fourth meeting. In their previous meeting, which took place in Milwaukee on March 16, Indiana defeated them 139-123 to snap Milwaukee’s 10-game winning streak.

The Bucks still have a 113-92 all-time series advantage.

Milwaukee has the best record in the association, two games up on Boston for the No. With seven games remaining, the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed heads into Tuesday’s action.

With just six remaining games, the Pacers are 12th in the East. They are four games behind Chicago for the 10th and final play-in spot in the loss column, with the Wizards ahead of them as well.

NHL Morning Skate – March 29, 2023

0

* With a five-point game, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins moved within four of his first 100-point season as Edmonton can now become the 14th team in NHL history to have three or more players reach the century mark in a campaign – only two of those instances have occurred since the start of the 1990s, both achieved by the Penguins (4 in 1992-93 & 3 in 1995-96).

* The Rush to the Playoffs escalated Tuesday as both the Flames and Predators earned pivotal wins to move within two and three points, respectively, of the Jets for the final Wild card spot in the Western Conference.

* The Penguins’ three-goal comeback was stymied by the Red Wings, preventing Pittsburgh from two points to set the stage for the Eastern Conference Wild Card race to take focus Wednesday on TNT, Sportsnet and TVA Sports. Meanwhile, first place in the Central Division can change hands once again Wednesday when the Avalanche battle the Wild on a national telecast in the U.S. and Canada.

NUGENT-HOPKINS POSTS FIVE-POINT NIGHT FOR OILERS ON HULU, ESPN+, TVAS
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (1-4—5) matched a career high for points in a game when he factored on five of seven Edmonton goals – reaching the 60-assist mark and extending his point streak to nine contests in the process – while Connor McDavid (0-3—3) surpassed 70 road points to help the Oilers (43-23-9, 95 points) defeat the Golden Knights (46-22-6, 98 points) and make ground on first place in the Pacific Division.

* Nugent-Hopkins (35-61—96 in 75 GP) joined McDavid and Leon Draisaitl as Edmonton’s third 60-assist player this season. The last campaign to feature three Oilers skaters hit the mark was 1985-86 (Wayne Gretzky: 163, Paul Coffey: 90 & Jari Kurri: 63).

* Nugent-Hopkins now sits four points shy of his first 100-point season and can become the sixth player in NHL history to reach the milestone for the first time in his 12th campaign or later. He would join Gordie Howe (23rd season, 1968-69), Johnny Bucyk (16th season, 1970-71), Steven Stamkos (14th season, 2021-22), Jean Ratelle (12th season, 1971-72) and Bobby Hull (12th season, 1968-69).

RUSH TO THE PLAYOFFS CONTINUES FOR PREDATORS, FLAMES

Both the Flames and Predators earned pivotal wins to inch closer to the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference:

Andrew Mangiapane and Walker Duehr scored both of Calgary’s goals to help the Flames (34-26-15, 83 points) move within two points of the Jets (41-31-3, 85 points), who suffered a loss Tuesday, for the Western Conference’s final Wild Card position. Tampa Bay (0-4-0 entering Tuesday) have not had a losing streak longer than four games during Jon Cooper’s tenure as head coach – which began with his first contest behind the bench exactly 10 years ago today.

NWSL: Kansas City Current goalkeeper AD Franch selected to U.S. Women’s National Team roster for pair of April Friendlies

KANSAS CITY – Kansas City Current goalkeeper Adrianna ‘AD’ Franch was named to the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) roster for a pair of friendly matches against Ireland. This is Franch’s second call up to the national team in 2023 after also being on the roster for the SheBelieves Cup in February.

The U.S. and Ireland will first face off Saturday, April 8 at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas in a match presented by Truly Hard Seltzer (1:30 p.m. CT on TNT, Universo and Peacock) before finishing the two-leg set on Tuesday, April 11 at the brand new CITYPARK in St. Louis, Missouri (6:30 p.m. CT on HBO Max, Universo and Peacock).

Both teams will be making their final preparations for the 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 – August 20. USA, FIFA’s #1 ranked team, will be in Group E with Vietnam, the Netherlands and Portugal while #22 Ireland will be in Group B with Australia, Nigeria and Canada.

“It’s exciting to get the group back together and we’re getting closer to how we want to look this summer,” said Andonovski. “The team is gelling and getting these players back in camp, all who know the environment very well, is just going to make it more competitive and turn the intensity up a notch. I know there is a lot of pressure on the players as the competition for World Cup spots increases, but that’s not something we shy away from. We talk about it, and we embrace it, as we all know these players make each other better.”

Additional Notes:

  • The roster features six players with 100 caps or more in defender Becky Sauerbrunn (214), Alex Morgan (204), Kelley O’Hara (156), Crystal Dunn (130), Lindsey Horan (126) and Julie Ertz (116).
  • Forward Megan Rapinoe, who is on 199 caps, was ruled out of this camp as she recovers from a lower leg injury.
  • The roster features 11 players with fewer than 30 caps – Sofia Huerta, Sophia Smith, Emily Fox, Alana Cook, Ashley Sanchez, Ashley Hatch, Trinity Rodman, Naomi Girma, Casey Murphy, Taylor Kornieck and Adrianna Franch.
  • Morgan is by far the leading scorer on the roster with 121 career goals, good for fifth in U.S. history. Swanson has 32 goals and Horan has 26 while both Dunn and Rose Lavelle have 24.
  • Swanson, who was named the 2023 Visa SheBelieves Cup MVP, leads the USA with seven goals in five appearances so far in 2023 and is in the midst of a six-game scoring streak dating back to the USWNT’s final game of 2022.
  • Eight of the 12 NWSL clubs are represented on this roster, led by four players from OL Reign, four players from the Washington Spirit and three players each the Chicago Red Stars, NY/NJ Gotham FC, San Diego Wave FC and Portland Thorns FC.
  • At the World Cup, which is taking place from July 20-Aug. 20 in 10 stadiums across nine host cities — five in Australia and four in New Zealand — the USA will open Group E play against Vietnam on July 22 at Eden Park in Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau, which will also serve as the host venue for the Opening Ceremony of the 2023 World Cup on July 20 when New Zealand plays Norway. The USA then faces Netherlands on July 27 at Wellington Regional Stadium in Wellington/Te Whanganui-a-Tara, followed by the Group A Playoff Winner Portugal on Aug. 1 at Eden Park in Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau.
  • In 2021, the USWNT played the first-ever match at Q2 Stadium, defeating Nigeria 2-0 in front of a sold-out crowd. This will the USA’s first match at Q2 since that historic night, which featured Christen Press and Lynn Williams score in the USA victory.
  • The match at CITYPARK also carries some history as it will be the first game for the U.S. Women at the home of the newest franchise in Major League Soccer, St. Louis CITY SC, the first female majority-owned team in the league. This will be the USWNT’s sixth match all-time in St. Louis, and most recently played at Busch Stadium in the lead up to both the 2015 and 2019 Women’s World Cups.
  • Ireland qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup – its first – in dramatic fashion. After finishing second in UEFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Group A behind Sweden, Ireland met rival Scotland in a one-game World Cup playoff at the famed Hampden Park in Glasgow. In front of more than 10,000 fans, a highly emotional goal in 72nd minute from Amber Barrett, who plays in Germany for Turbine Potsdam, sent The Girls in Green to Australia and New Zealand.
