NHL ANNOUNCES 32 PLAYERS NAMED TO 2023 HONDA NHL ALL-STAR WEEKEND
The NHL announced 32 players named to the four divisional rosters for the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend. The 32 All-Stars – seven skaters and one goaltender for each of the four divisional rosters – were selected by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department, with one player being chosen from each team. Click here to read more.

* The NHL also announced the launch of the 2023 NHL All-Star Fan Vote presented by Guaranteed Rate, which will enable fans to complete the rosters by selecting 12 additional All-Stars. The rosters for each All-Star team ultimately will consist of 11 total players (nine skaters & two goaltenders) per squad. Voting is now open at NHL.com/vote and via the NHL App.

SUNRISE-BOUND PLAYERS LEAVE THEIR MARK ON GAMES THURSDAY

Several players headed to the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Fla., shone Thursday.

Alex Ovechkin (29-19—48 in 41 GP) scored to move within one marker of tying longtime Capitals forward Mike Gartner (17) for the most 30-goal seasons in NHL history and help Washington extend its road winning streak to a franchise-record seven games. The 32 players named to an All-Star team roster have a combined 4,833 career regular-season goals, with Ovechkin accounting for nearly one-fifth of them.

* Connor McDavid (272-500—772 in 527 GP) tallied two helpers to reach the 500-assist milestone after being named to his sixth career NHL All-Star Game – the same night teammate Leon Draisaitl (276-400—676 in 596 GP) celebrated 400 career helpers. McDavid improved his League-leading point totals to 33-42—75 (40 GP) and became the fourth player in the past 30 years to record 75-plus points through 40 games in season, joining Mario Lemieux (42-62—104 in 1995-96 & 39-65—104 in 1992-93), Jaromir Jagr (35-47—82 in 1995-96) and Pat LaFontaine (26-49—75 in 1992-93).

Sidney Crosby (20-25—45 in 38 GP) found the back of the net in Vegas and became just the second active player to record 15 or more 20-goal seasons, joining Ovechkin(18). Crosby, who is one of six NHL players to capture the All-Star Game MVP, Hart Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy in his career (also Jean BeliveauBobby OrrWayne GretzkyJoe Sakic &Lemieux), is on pace for his third season with 40-plus goals and seventh with 90 or more points.

Jack Hughes (24-22—46 in 39 GP) had two goals in the Devils’ loss to the Blues to boost his team-leading total to 24 this season. Hughes, one of 14 team leaders in goals named to an All-Star roster (outright or tied), recorded his 41st career multi-point game and tied Brendan Shanahan for the second most by a Devils/Rockies/Scouts skater before age 22 (only Kirk Muller has more w/ 63).

Kevin Hayes (1-2—3) was one of three Flyers players with three or more points (also Morgan Frost & Travis Konecny) as Philadelphia posted a season-high six goals, including five in the middle frame. Hayes (10-25—35 in 38 GP) is one of 16 team leaders in assists named to an All-Star roster (outright or tied).

Matty Beniers buried one of Seattle’s five goals as the Kraken snapped the Maple Leafs’ home point streak at 11 games (8-0-3 dating to Nov. 12, 2022). Beniers was one of two rookies named to an All-Star team roster, with the other one being Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson.

Juuse Saros stopped 64 of the Hurricanes’ 67 shots on goal to establish a new single-game franchise record for saves by a Predators goaltender. Saros, who is set to appear in an NHL All-Star Game for the second time in as many years, helped Nashville snap Carolina’s home winning streak at eight contests.

KARLSSON CAN EXTEND STREAK AS SHARKS VISIT DUCKS ON HULU, ESPN+

Friday’s slate is highlighted by Erik Karlsson (2-19—21 in 13 GP) putting his franchise-record 13-game point streak on the line as the Sharks (12-20-7, 31 points) square off with the Ducks (11-24-4, 26 points) on HULU, ESPN+, Sportsnet ONE and TVA Sports. Karlsson can become the seventh NHL defenseman in the last 30 years with a point streak of at least 14 contests and the fifth blueliner in League history with an assist streak of that length, following Hockey Hall of Fame members Paul Coffey (17 GP in 1985-86), Brian Leetch (15 GP in 1991-92), Phil Housley (14 GP in 1992-93) and Bobby Orr (14 GP in 1970-71).

* Friday’s TVA Sports doubleheader closes in Anaheim but opens with Matthew Tkachuk and the Panthers (17-18-4, 38 points) visiting the Red Wings (16-13-7, 39 points) at Little Caesars Arena. Tkachuk and his brother, Brady, were named to the Atlantic Division roster for the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend and would be the first siblings to skate with the same team during an NHL All-Star Game since Daniel and Henrik Sedin with Team Alfredsson in 2012.

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawks (18-20) at Los Angeles Lakers (17-21)

0

The Los Angeles Lakers hope to have LeBron James back in the lineup as they seek a second win over the Atlanta Hawks in eight days when the clubs meet in in Southern California on Friday night.

James celebrated his 38th birthday on Dec. 30 in Atlanta with a season-high 47 points in a 130-121 Lakers win.

Not satisfied, the 18-time All-Star had his second-biggest scoring night of the year, a 43-pointer, in a 121-115 win at Charlotte three nights later.

In the process, he became the first 38-year-old since Michael Jordan to score 40 or more in consecutive games.

James’ bid for a 40-plus hat trick was put on hold by what Lakers coach Darvin Ham labeled a “common cold” Wednesday, but that didn’t prevent Los Angeles from tying a season high with its third straight win, 112-109 over the visiting Miami Heat.

Dennis Schroder came up big in James’ absence, putting up 32 points. Supporting-cast members Thomas Bryant, Austin Reaves and Wenyen Gabriel combined for 42 points, prompting Ham to suggest afterward that sometimes having to go without James and Anthony Davis can be beneficial.

Bryant also had a big night in the win at Atlanta when he was the game’s leading rebounder with 17 to complement 19 points in James’ shadow.

The Hawks countered with a balanced attack that featured six players in double figures, led by Trae Young with 29.

Atlanta has since gone on the road, and easily could be 2-0 on a Western swing if not for a game-tying 3-pointer by Klay Thompson — which the NBA later said should have been waved off for traveling — at the end of the first extra session of Golden State’s 143-141 double-overtime win Monday. Again, six Hawks reached double figures in points, all with at least 16.

Five went for 17 or more two nights later when the Hawks finally pulled out a close one, winning 120-117 at Sacramento. John Collins had his second consecutive double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds following a 25-point, 13-point night in San Francisco.

Dejounte Murray, whose late steal secured the win at Sacramento to end a four-game losing streak, insisted afterward that the Hawks are “going in the right direction.”

The Hawks have done exactly that each of the last two seasons against the Lakers, losing the first game against Los Angeles before winning the second matchup.

Atlanta remains without starting center Clint Capela, out with a calf injury. Onyeka Okongwu has played admirably in his place, averaging 14.8 points and 10 rebounds in his last four starts.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (20-19) at Phoenix Suns (20-19)

0

The Phoenix Suns are sinking fast without Devin Booker and look to stop a four-game skid when they host the Miami Heat on Friday night.

Phoenix is 2-8 without Booker this season, and he will be sidelined about three more weeks after aggravating a groin injury on Dec. 25. He had just returned from a three-game absence due to the initial injury when he left four minutes into the Christmas Day contest.

Booker has missed the last five games for the Suns, who have lost 12 of their past 16 games.

Phoenix has already lost more games (19) this season than it did all last season while recording an NBA-best 64-18 record.

The Suns are back home after a 1-5 road trip that ended with a 90-88 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. Two nights earlier, Phoenix registered a season-worst point total in a 102-83 loss to the New York Knicks.

The loss to the Cavaliers came when Evan Mobley hit a tiebreaking 14-footer with four seconds left for Cleveland. Mikal Bridges missed a last-second shot for Phoenix.

Phoenix reached the NBA Finals two seasons ago and the Western Conference finals last season. But with the midway point of the season just two games away, the Suns are tied for eighth in the West and looking lost without Booker.

The three-time All-Star guard is averaging a career-best 27.1 points per game and has knocked down 67 3-pointers.

Williams said the squad has to remain positive while pursuing a turnaround.

Miami has the same 20-19 record as the Suns and is also looking to find a groove. The Heat rattled off four straight wins in mid-December and have since split their past eight contests.

The Heat reached the Eastern Conference finals last season but haven’t resembled a championship contender so far this season. Miami sits eighth in the East after Wednesday’s 112-109 loss to a Los Angeles Lakers’ team missing LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

The Heat are 2-2 entering the final of a five-game road trip and center Bam Adebayo has thrived on the excursion.

Adebayo is averaging 28.8 points and has scored 30 or more points in each of the past three games. He had 32 against the Utah Jazz on Saturday, 31 versus the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday and 30 against the Lakers.

Jimmy Butler scored 27 points against the Lakers after having a season-low nine two nights earlier in the win over the Clippers.

The Heat notched a 113-112 victory over the visiting Suns on Nov. 14. Adebayo contributed 30 points and 10 rebounds for Miami, while Booker scored 25 points for Phoenix.

NBA Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers (25-14) at Denver Nuggets (25-13)

0

Donovan Mitchell knows the Denver Nuggets well, engaging in numerous battles with them in his five seasons with the Utah Jazz — most notably an epic seven-game series in the Orlando Bubble in 2020.

Now playing in the Eastern Conference with Cleveland, Mitchell won’t see the Nuggets nearly as often. But the two sides will renew acquaintances Friday night when the Cavaliers travel to Colorado.

Cleveland has won three in a row, and Mitchell made headlines with his 71-point performance in an overtime win against the Chicago Bulls on Monday night. Mitchell scored 13 points in overtime and set the franchise record for points in a game.

Mitchell had a relatively quiet night against Phoenix on Wednesday night, scoring just 20 points. More importantly, however, the Cavaliers got that third straight win. Unlike the shootout against Chicago, the Cavaliers clamped down on defense to squeak out a 90-88 win.

While offense gains most of the news, Cleveland more often wins games the way it did against the Suns — with its defense. The Cavaliers held Phoenix to 39.5 percent shooting and 45 points in the second half to overcome a 10-point deficit.

Cleveland may have a small advantage despite playing at altitude in Denver. The Nuggets played Thursday night and in a late start — albeit at home. Denver was able to rest its regulars a good amount of the game, a 31-point rout of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The only Nuggets starter to play more than 25 minutes was Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who logged 28:59, while Nikola Jokic (24:11), Michael Porter Jr. (22:11) Jamal Murray (21:21) and Aaron Gordon (21:09) conserved their energy.

None of the starters played in the fourth quarter as Denver improved to 15-3 at home.

Denver got another glimpse of what Murray can do when fully healthy. After being held scoreless in the first half at Minnesota before scoring 14 in the second half on Monday, he looked like his 2020 version against Los Angeles.

He scored 13 points in a row in the first quarter to help the Nuggets pull away from the Clippers early. He finished with a game-high 18 points.

Murray has been sitting one game when Denver plays on back-to-back nights, but the blowout win over the Clippers — and no travel — will allow him to play in both games.

As encouraging as Murray’s flurry was Thursday night, it was Porter’s play on defense that made coach Michael Malone most happy. Malone picks a defensive player of the game each night, and he awarded it to Porter on Thursday.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (21-19) at Minnesota Timberwolves (18-21)

0

The Minnesota Timberwolves have an opportunity extend the recent woes of the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday in Minneapolis.

Los Angeles dropped its fourth straight game in the first leg of a back-to-back on Thursday, falling 122-91 to the host Denver Nuggets. The 31-point margin of defeat was the Clippers’ worst of the season.

An 11-of-41 shooting performance (26.8 percent) in the first half doomed Los Angeles against the Nuggets. The Clippers trailed by 38 points before intermission and by as many 43 points in the second half.

If Los Angeles had a positive to take from the blowout loss, it was that the early deficit allowed coach Tyronn Lue to play the starters limited minutes. None exceeded 18:17, and stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George both sat out the entire second half.

Leonard has been limited since returning to the lineup on Dec. 5 after recovering from an ankle injury. He has yet to play both games of a back-to-back set.

Leonard sat out the Clippers’ Monday loss to the visiting Miami Heat before returning to action in Denver.

The ongoing skid matches Los Angeles’ longest of the season. Prior to the current swoon, the Clippers won 7 of 9, a run that included a 99-88 home victory over Minnesota on Dec. 14. The Timberwolves posted their lowest point total of the season in that contest.

Minnesota comes into the Friday matchup having won two in a row immediately after a six-game losing streak. The Timberwolves downed the visiting Nuggets 124-111 on Monday, then produced another home victory on Wednesday, 113-106 over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Anthony Edwards went for 32 points vs. Portland, his 10th consecutive game scoring at least 23 points and his fifth of at least 30 in that stretch. He has posted at least 29 points in each of his last four games.

Edwards, a third-year player, is averaging career bests across the board with 24.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Minnesota needs all the production it can get from its statistical leader with another of the players central to last year’s postseason run, Karl-Anthony Towns, still sidelined due to a calf injury.

Towns hasn’t played since Nov. 28, and the timeline for his return is uncertain.

His absence is part of a roster that Timberwolves coach Chris Finch told reporters last weekend that he planned to “shuffle it up totally.”

That included playing Taurean Prince — out of the lineup since late November due to a shoulder injury — for 21 minutes on Wednesday. Prince responded with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.

NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons (11-30) at San Antonio Spurs (12-26)

0

The San Antonio Spurs will look to use their home court to get on the winning track when they host the puzzling Detroit Pistons on Friday in a game between two teams trying to stay out of the cellars of their respective conferences.

The Spurs head home after a 117-114 loss at New York on Wednesday, their third straight setback and eighth in their past 11 games. Keldon Johnson led San Antonio with 26 points, while Josh Richardson added 20, Zach Collins 16, Doug McDermott 15 and Tre Jones scored 14.

San Antonio fought back twice from double-digit deficits to take the lead on a Johnson jumper with under four minutes to play.

The Spurs had a chance to tie or take the lead with 29.7 seconds left, but they couldn’t inbounds the ball in five seconds and were whistled for a violation. Johnson couldn’t hit the rim on a final contested shot at the buzzer.

The Spurs’ season got more difficult on Thursday with the announcement that guard-forward Devin Vassell is to undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee. There is no timetable for the return of the team’s second-leading scorer at 19.4 points per game.

Vassell has missed eight games this year due to knee problems.

The Pistons head to San Antonio on the heels of a stunning 122-119 victory over injury-depleted Golden State in San Francisco on Saddiq Bey’s game-winning 28-foot 3-pointer that beat the final buzzer.

Bey was back in his role as the Pistons’ sixth man after Killian Hayes returned from a suspension.

Bojan Bogdanovic hit five of Detroit’s 16 3-pointers in the game and finished with a team-high 29 points. Jalen Duren racked up an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Bey added 17 points, Alec Burks 15, Isaiah Stewart 13, Jaden Ivey 12, and Hayes distributed a game-high 13 assists.

Detroit has alternated losses and wins in the first four outings of its five-game road trip, which ends in San Antonio on Friday. The Pistons’ victory allowed them to earn a sweep of the season-series with Golden State.

NBA Preview: Washington Wizards (17-22) at Oklahoma City Thunder (16-22)

0

After letting go of the step-back 3-pointer, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander kept his right arm fully extended until the ball dropped through the basket.

With 1.1 seconds left against the Washington Wizards on Nov. 16, Gilgeous-Alexander’s shot gave the Thunder a 121-120 win.

The teams face each other Friday for the first time since Gilgeous-Alexander’s game-winner, when they meet in Oklahoma City.

Gilgeous-Alexander equaled his then-career high with 42 points in that game. Since, he has topped it with 44 points Dec. 23 against New Orleans.

Gilgeous-Alexander is coming off a 33-point performance in Wednesday’s loss at Orlando. He shot just 8 of 19 from the floor but was 17 of 18 at the free-throw line a night after missing a win over Boston with a non-COVID illness.

The Thunder trailed by 17 early in that win over the Wizards.

Since the start of last season, Oklahoma City has won 12 games in which it trailed by at least 15 points — the most in the league during that span.

The Thunder have won four such games this season and nine games in which the team was behind by at least 10 points.

The Thunder have lost three of their last four.

The Wizards will be without Beal, who left Tuesday’s loss to Milwaukee in the second quarter after aggravating a left hamstring injury. The team said Thursday that Beal will miss at least three more games.

Beal has missed 15 games this season with a variety of ailments. He also missed six with a right hamstring injury.

Washington has won five of six since Kristaps Porzingis returned from missing two games.

The pairing of Porzingis and Daniel Gafford, who came off the bench before Porzingis’ absence but has remained in the starting lineup alongside Porzingis, has helped the Wizards’ defense.

Washington’s defensive rating was in the bottom 10 in the league at 113.8 before the change. Since, the Wizards’ defensive rating is 106.3, tops in the league.

NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets (10-29) at Milwaukee Bucks (25-13)

0

The Milwaukee Bucks showed how to snap out of a rut.

The Charlotte Hornets need that recovery plan.

For the Hornets, a step in that quest will come Friday night when they play the Bucks in Milwaukee.

The Bucks have followed a four-game losing streak by winning three of their past four games.

They demonstrated another type of bounce-back effort Wednesday night, squandering a 16-point lead across the last two minutes of regulation and then responding to beat the host Toronto Raptors 104-101 in overtime on Grayson Allen’s 3-pointer with about 11 seconds left.

The Hornets have lost five of their past six games. Coach Steve Clifford calls this the most difficult part of the team’s schedule.

The visit to Milwaukee will mark the beginning of a four-game trip for Charlotte. After that, it will be two games at home vs. Boston, and then the next four games will be on the road.

Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said he has liked his team’s attack mode. That’s led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, who scored 55 and 30 points in games on back-to-back nights earlier this week.

Antetokounmpo is averaging 32.7 points per game for the third-highest mark in the league. He didn’t play in Milwaukee’s 105-96 victory Dec. 3 at Charlotte. Portis scored 20 points to lead the Bucks in that game.

The Hornets might be counting on their effort in that matchup to lift them from the doldrums. Top-tier Milwaukee entered the game with a 15-6 record and is 25-13 now.

A good piece of news for the Hornets is that point guard LaMelo Ball has been productive since returning from his latest injury layoff. He has led Charlotte in scoring in five of the past six games and has topped the team in assists in 10 consecutive games. Ball missed the first meeting with Milwaukee.

The Hornets’ latest setback in the injury department is twofold. Gordon Hayward missed Wednesday night’s loss to Memphis after sitting out late in Monday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers because of hamstring soreness.

Kelly Oubre Jr., who is averaging a career-best 20.2 points per game this season, reportedly will be out four to six weeks after undergoing hand surgery on Thursday.

On the flip side, Dennis Smith Jr. and Cody Martin are back. Both players logged more than 20 minutes in the Memphis game, though they combined for only 11 points on 5-for-15 shooting from the field.

NBA Preview: Brooklyn Nets (25-13) at New Orleans Pelicans (24-14)

0

The Brooklyn Nets saw their 12-game winning streak end Wednesday night.

After losing to the Bulls 121-112 in Chicago, they will try to avoid losing consecutive games for the first time since Nov. 13-15 when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night.

Kevin Durant, who made 15 of 22 field-goal attempts, led Brooklyn with a game-high 44 points, one short of his season-high, but Chicago had six players score in double figures.

Durant scored a season-high 28 points in the first half, but the Bulls still held a 69-59 halftime lead.

Brooklyn, which has won 16 of its last 18 games, hadn’t lost a road game since Nov. 25 when it fell to the Pacers 128-117. This is the middle game of a three-game road trip.

Kyrie Irving added 25 points, but made just 1 of 8 3-pointers, for the Nets, and Seth Curry scored 22.

Brooklyn’s surge, which has the team near the top of the Eastern Conference, earned Vaughn Coach of the Month honors in the East for December.

The West’s coaching award went to the Pelicans’ Willie Green, whose team went 10-5.

New Orleans rolled to a 31-point second-quarter lead and led by 25 points at the end of the third quarter against the visiting Houston Rockets on Wednesday night. It looked as though Green was going to be able to rest his starters in the fourth quarter.

But the Rockets kept chipping away at the deficit and when they got within 16 midway through the period, Green sent CJ McCollum and Jonas Valanciunas back into the game.

It would have been helpful to Green to be able to limit his starters’ minutes because he’s going to have to lean on them while leading scorer Zion Williamson is sidelined for at least three weeks because of a strained hamstring. Also, second-leading scorer Brandon Ingram has yet to return from a bruised toe that has kept him out of the last 19 games.

McCollum finished with a game-high 28 points to lead six New Orleans scorers in double figures. Valanciunas added 16 points and 17 rebounds.

New Orleans’ 17-4 home record is the best through 21 games in franchise history.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks (21-18) at Toronto Raptors (16-22)

0

The visiting New York Knicks will be out to avenge a streak-breaking loss to the Toronto Raptors two weeks ago when the teams meet again Friday night.

Toronto’s Pascal Siakam scored a career-best 52 points Dec. 21 in the Raptors’ 113-106 victory at New York that ended the Knicks’ run of eight straight wins. The victory also squashed the Raptors’ six-game losing streak.

The decision was the start of five consecutive losses for the Knicks, who have rebounded to win three straight after defeating the visiting San Antonio Spurs 117-114 on Wednesday night.

Since defeating the Knicks, the Raptors are 2-4 following a 104-101 overtime loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday to open a six-game homestand.

Instead of dwelling on the defeat, the Raptors will try to carry the momentum from a stunning comeback against the Bucks into Friday’s game.

The Bucks led 90-69 with 3:50 remaining in the game and they still led by 16 points two minutes later. But the Raptors came back to tie the game at 97-all on Gary Trent Jr.’s 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds to play in regulation.

The weirdness started early with poor shooting by both sides that left Milwaukee leading 13-12 after the first quarter and 39-38 at halftime.

Scottie Barnes did not score until his 15-point fourth quarter, and he added four points in overtime.

Fred VanVleet led the Raptors with 28 points and 12 assists, while Trent scored 22.

Toronto shot 32.8 percent (38 of 116) from the field.

In defeating the Spurs on Wednesday, the Knicks got some payback for a 122-115 loss at San Antonio on Dec. 29.

Jalen Brunson, who did not play against the Spurs last week because of a sore hip, led the Knicks with a regular-season career-best 38 points on Wednesday.

Julius Randle scored 25 points on 9-of-26 shooting from the field and added 13 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.

Immanuel Quickley added 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

R.J. Barrett (lacerated right index finger) remained out for the Knicks.
