MLS Preview: Minnesota United FC (2-0-2) at St. Louis City SC (5-0-0)

0

In its last six encounters with expansion teams, Minnesota United FC has won four (D1 L1). The Loons have only conceded one goal in four encounters with MLS newcomers since the start of the 2020 season.

Along with the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1996 and Sporting Kansas City in 201, who each won their first seven games, St. Louis City SC is the third team in MLS history to earn 15 points from its first five games. Its plus-11 goal difference is the best in MLS history at this point in a season.

For the third time in the last four seasons (also in 2020 and 2022), Minnesota United FC has gone four games unbeaten (W2 D2). The Loons have won both of their road games this season, and they might win three straight away from home for the second time in club history (June-July 2022).

Joao Klauss is the sixth player in MLS history to have scored at least one goal in each of his first five games for St. Louis City SC. He has done this in all five of the club’s games. Andy Williams was the only player to contribute to a goal in each of his first six MLS games, scoring in each of his first seven games in 1998.

In Saturday’s 1-1 matchup with Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Minnesota United FC only had 37.2% possession. This season, the Loons have held possession at an average of 40.5 percent, which puts them ahead of St. Louis City SC, which has only held possession at 42.4 percent.

The Calgary Flames welcomed the Los Angeles Kings to the Scotiabank Saddledome for their fourth and final meeting on Tuesday night. Calgary jumped out in front courtesy of Andrew Mangiapane who scored his 15th of the season just 1:54 into the contest to give the Flames a 1-0 lead. Rasmus Andersson would pot what he thought would be his 12th on the year, but the goal was called back following a coaches challenge. JETS, FLAMES CONTINUE BATTLE FOR WESTERN CONFERENCE WILD CARD SPOT
A four-game Friday will include two teams in the heat of the Western Conference Wild Card race with both the Jets (41-31-3, 85 points), who currently hold that final postseason spot, and the Flames (34-26-15, 83 points), who trail Winnipeg by two points, in action.

* The Jets, who are being chased in the standings by both the Flames and the Predators (37-29-8, 82 points), last sat outside the playoff picture through games played on Oct. 26, 2022. The Flames, meanwhile, will look to inch closer to acquiring a postseason position for the first time since the conclusion of play on Feb. 15.

NBA Preview: Denver Nuggets (51-25) at Phoenix Suns (41-35)

0

Phoenix Suns mentor Monty Williams isn’t worried about Kevin Durant’s preparation for the impending postseason. Williams is aware that the 13-time All-Star will soon return to form.

Durant will attempt to advance once more on Friday when Phoenix takes on the visiting Denver Nuggets, who currently hold the lead in the Western Conference and are still on track to earn the top seed in the conference for the first time in franchise history. Durant will be competing against the Nuggets.

On Wednesday, when he made his much-anticipated home debut in a victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves that was decided by a score of 107 to 100, Durant had a shooting night that was unusually poor.

Durant scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and provided four assists in 29 minutes after missing 10 games with a left ankle injury. He shot 5-for-18 from the field.

Phoenix (41-35) won its third straight game against Minnesota, and Devin Booker had a team-high 29 points. Chris Paul added 19 points for Phoenix, which is now half a game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers in the Western Conference race for fourth place.

The Suns accept they are strategically situated to make a title run with Durant, who was gained from the Brooklyn Nets finally month’s exchange cutoff time.

After dropping their previous two meetings with the Nuggets in Denver—by scores of 128-125 in overtime on Christmas Day and 126-97 on January 11—the Suns are looking for their first victory over the Nuggets this season.

In a 107-88 defeat to the visiting New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday, the Nuggets (51-25) ended their four-game winning streak. Due to tightness in his right calf, Denver center Nikola Jokic was forced to miss the game.

Jokic is averaging 24.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 9.9 assists, and Denver’s disappointing performance against the Pelicans may have strengthened his case for MVP.

In the defeat on Thursday, Denver made just 4 of 28 (34.3 percent) attempts from three-point range. According to Nuggets coach Michael Malone, Jokic’s absence clearly contributed to the team’s difficulties.

Malone stated that Jokic may be absent again for Friday’s matchup after missing nine games this season.

The Nuggets, led by 21-year-old Jamal Murray, are three games ahead of the second-place Memphis Grizzlies with six games remaining.

In the second game of a back-to-back set, Murray, who played 36 minutes in the loss, may be rested as a precaution.

Bruce Brown’s performance against the Timberwolves was one bright spot: he scored 19 points off the bench. The fifth-year star has scored in twofold figures in six of his beyond eight games.

NBA Preview: Utah Jazz (36-40) at Boston Celtics (53-24)

0

When the shattered Utah Jazz come to Boston on Friday, the Boston Celtics, just one night after one of their best wins of the season, will try to keep the momentum going.

On Thursday, Boston defeated the Milwaukee Bucks, who were in attendance, 140-99 in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. While matching their second-highest point total of the season, the Celtics converted 22 of their 43 attempts at the three-point line, or 51.2%.

Jaylen Brown scored 30 points to go along with Jayson Tatum’s 40 points and eight rebounds for the Celtics.

Two games behind Milwaukee, Boston (53-24) is in second place in the Eastern Conference. With five regular-season games remaining, the Celtics won the head-to-head tiebreaker thanks to their blowout victory on Thursday.

The Jazz, who will be without at least four regular contributors on Friday, the Celtics hope the fun continues.

Despite missing Lauri Markkanen with a hand injury, Collin Sexton with a hamstring injury, Jordan Clarkson with a finger injury, Rudy Gay with a back injury, and Kelly Olynyk with an illness, Utah kept its playoff hopes alive by defeating the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday by a score of 128-117.

Olynyk is listed as questionable to face Boston, and Gay, Markkanen, Sexton, and Clarkson won’t play.

Utah (36-40) is in 12th place in the Western Conference. It is one and a half games behind the Dallas Mavericks (37-40), who are in 11th place, and one and a half games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder (38-39), who are in the hunt for the final spot in the four-team play-in tournament. Notwithstanding a solid completion, Utah will be one of 14 groups in the NBA’s draft lottery.

Utah has six regular-season games remaining, three at home and three on the road, including the matchup with Boston.

The Utah roster’s top four scorers are Markkanen (25.7 points per game), Clarkson (20.8), Sexton (14.3), and Olynyk (12.2).

With a career-high 41 points, Talen Horton-Tucker filled the offensive void against the Spurs. Horton-Tucker connected on 15 of 25 attempts, including 6 of 11 attempts from three-point range. This season, he scores 9.9 points on average per game.

Utah ended a four-game losing streak largely due to Horton-Tucker.

The Jazz and Celtics will play each other twice this season, with the second meeting taking place on Friday. On March 18 in Salt Lake City, Utah overcame a 19-point deficit to defeat Boston 118-117.

In that game, Markkanen led the Jazz with 28 points. The Celtics’ Grant Williams scored 23 points and made a career-high seven 3-pointers, but Walker Kessler blocked his final shot for the win.

NWSL Match Preview: OL Reign (0-1-0) at NJ/NY Gotham FC (1-0-0)

Red Bull Arena | Harrison, New Jersey – Saturday, April 1 at 7:30 PM ET

Players to watch:

Gotham FC forward Midge Purce notched a goal and assist in the win over Angel City on Sunday, leading an impressive Gotham side that brought back all three points from Los Angeles. The occasion marked Purce’s third career NWSL game with both a goal and an assist, with two of those coming in season openers (also 2022). Gotham’s other goalscorer was club debutant Lynn Williams, who was acquired in the offseason from the Kansas City Current. Her lone appearance for the side came in 81 minutes in the Challenge Cup against Louisville last year before her year was cut short due to injury.

Despite the Reign’s loss in its season opener last weekend, one of the bright spots was a landmark appearance for defender Lauren Barnes. Barnes played in her 190th regular season NWSL match, the most matches played by a single player in league history. Gotham’s McCall Zerboni is second in the category with 189 games played. As far as the match itself, forward Bethany Balcer registered a team high four shots and goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce made three saves and conceded just the one goal.

Match facts: Gotham FC opens up its 2023 home campaign against OL Reign on Saturday night with an impressive opening showing against Angel City FC bolstering the hosts, while OL Reign will be entering with motivations just as high following a season opening loss in Washington, D.C. to the Spirit.

Gotham FC’s 2-1 win over Angel City was the club’s first win after trailing at halftime since a 4-3 win over the Boston Breakers on September 30, 2017. Though the club conceded early on to ACFC, it steadied itself and saw the duo of Purce and Williams deliver the goals necessary to complete the comeback. The victory ended a 37-game winless streak when losing at halftime for Gotham, the third-longest such winless streak in NWSL history.

Meanwhile, OL Reign were shut out in their season opener, losing 1-0 to the Spirit despite having an expected goals (xG) value of 2.25 on 16 shots. It was the team’s highest xG in a match they were held scoreless since a 1-0 home loss in September 2019 to Sky Blue (2.72 xG), now Gotham FC. OL Reign were held scoreless in the NWSL Semi-finals, but before that had not been held scoreless since a 1-0 loss to Kansas City on July 17.

History has favored OL Reign in this fixture, with Saturday’s visitors earning five clean sheet in 11 road games all-time against Gotham FC, losing just three times in those matches (W5 D3). The only NWSL team to be shut out at home by a single opponent more than Gotham against the Reign is the Houston Dash (six times against both OL Reign and Portland).

NWSL Match Preview: Angel City FC (0-1-0) at Orlando Pride (0-1-0)

Exploria Stadium | Orlando, Florida – Sunday, April 2 at 5:30 PM ET

Players to watch:

Orlando goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse played in just her third career NWSL game in the club’s season opener loss against Portland, where she made 12 saves in a road loss against the Thorns. It was the most saves in a single game in Pride history, and the first time Moorhouse made double-digit saves in any league game since having 10 for Bordeaux against PSG in Division 1 Féminine in December 2021. Leading the team in shots was a four-way tie between Messiah Bright and Adriana—two newcomers—as well as returnees Mikayla Cluffand Julie Doyle (2).

Though the club suffered defeat in its opening game, Angel City FC forward Alyssa Thompson—who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft—opened her regular season account with a goal against Gotham FC. At 18 years and 139 days, Thompson became the second-youngest player to score on her NWSL debut, older than only Jaedyn Shaw (17y, 252d). Thompson and her teammates fired 11 shots at Gotham’s goal, five of which were on target, with forward Katie Johnson the only player to register more than one shot on goal.

Match facts: The Orlando Pride host Angel City FC for the Pride’s first home game of the season as the pair round out the weekend’s action on Sunday night. Both sides are entering off the back of losses in Week 1, with Orlando seeking home success and Angel City aiming to take advantage of its host of options in attack.

In Orlando’s season-opening 4-0 road loss to Portland, the club allowed 27 shots and 16 shots on target. That is the most shots on target allowed in a single game in league history, while it was also tied for the second-most shots allowed in team history (27 at Portland in 2022, 31 at North Carolina in 2019). The Pride have struggled in their last few outings against Portland, though, losing their last two games by a combined 10-0 scoreline.

On the other side, dating back to last season, Angel City has lost three consecutive league matches following its 2-1 loss to Gotham on opening weekend. It is the longest league losing streak in team history while also being the first time the team has conceded multiple goals in three straight NWSL matches. Sunday’s visitors were close to keeping momentum against Gotham FC last weekend, but after Gotham established a lead just after the hour mark, Angel City was unable to create enough going the other way to rescue a point.

Orlando scored a 1-0 road win against Angel City in the first meeting between the clubs last season. Then, the teams played to a 2-2 draw in Orlando in August. That tie was the highest-scoring draw by Angel City in its inaugural season.
