NBA Preview: Los Angeles Lakers (19-21) at Denver Nuggets (26-13)

0

LeBron James has been dominating the league for 20 seasons, including this year as his Los Angeles Lakers struggle to stay in the Western Conference playoff race.

James is not only chasing another postseason run he is also chasing history. James is second on the NBA’s career scoring list, 422 points behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and is projected to pass the Hall of Fame center next month.

He is expected to cut into that gap when Los Angeles plays at the Denver Nuggets on Monday night in a clash of teams on a roll.

The Lakers have won five in a row after pulling out a 136-134 victory at Sacramento on Saturday night. They’ve put together a season-long streak without Anthony Davis, who has been out with a right foot injury since a 126-108 win over Denver on Dec. 16.

Los Angeles has done it with the usual production by James that has inspired contributions from others. In the win over the Kings, four players scored 20 or more points, including a season-high 29 points on 12-of-14 shooting to go with 14 rebounds from Thomas Bryant, who has stepped up with Davis hurt.

The winning streak has vaulted the Lakers within two games of the fifth seed in the Western Conference.

One guy playing the right way is Nuggets center Nikola Jokic. The winner of the last two MVP awards is playing even better this season. He is averaging 25.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 9.5 assists and has a league-best 10 triple-doubles.

He has averaged a triple-double since late November and has led Denver to 12 wins in the last 15 games to sit atop the Western Conference.

It’s not just his teammates that think he is deserving of another MVP. After he had 28 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in a 121-108 win over visiting Cleveland on Friday night, Cavaliers forward Kevin Love said Jokic “looks like he’s on the way to potentially a third MVP.”

The difference in this campaign is Jokic is surrounded by more talent. Jamal Murray and Porter are healthy and Denver added Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Bruce Brown and Christian Braun to the rotation.

Murray has started to look like he is fully recovered from tearing his left ACL nearly two years ago, and he is feeling that, too. Hesitation has been replaced by confidence and he is playing more freely — and played in back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday.

NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (25-14) at New York Knicks (22-18)

0

The Milwaukee Bucks are beginning a road trip Monday night in search for some consistency and a defensive identity.

The New York Knicks’ brief homestand starts with another chance to maintain those elusive traits.

The Bucks will look to bounce back from a lopsided loss when they visit the Knicks in the final regular-season game between the clubs this season.

Both teams last played Friday, when the Bucks suffered another lopsided loss as they fell to the visiting Charlotte Hornets 138-109 and the host Knicks continued their latest surge with a 112-108 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Any hope the Bucks had of winning their third straight game Friday disappeared when the Hornets — who have the third-worst record in the NBA and will likely be in the thick of the Victor Wembanyama lottery — raced out to a 51-28 lead after the first quarter. The 51 points tied the NBA record for the highest-scoring first quarter and were the most the Hornets have ever scored in a period.

The early outburst by the Hornets was historic, but the poor defense and one-sided nature of the defeat continued a worrisome trend for the Bucks, who gave up at least 130 points for the fifth time this season and lost by at least 20 points for the fourth time. All four of those losses have happened since Dec. 1; Milwaukee has gone 10-8 since then.

While the Bucks suffered 16 losses by 20 points or more over the previous two seasons — 11 in the regular season and five in the playoffs — a perennially leaky defense is something new. Milwaukee gave up at least 130 points just 14 times the last two years, including eight times during the 2020-21 campaign, when it won the NBA title for the first time since 1971.

Giannis Antetokounmpo was also held to a season-low nine points on 2-of-7 shooting against Charlotte.

New York isn’t far removed from similar defensive concerns. The Knicks opened the season by losing 13 of their first 23 games, a stretch in which they gave up at least 120 points seven times. They then won seven straight from Dec. 4-20, a span in which they allowed more than 106 points just once.

The Knicks followed that with a five-game losing streak, during which they allowed Dallas star Luka Doncic to produce the first 60/20/10 triple-double in NBA history (60 points, 21 rebounds, 10 assists). The Mavericks overcame a nine-point deficit in the final 33 seconds of regulation to win that game 126-121 in overtime.

The current four-game winning streak began with double-digit victories over the Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns before the Knicks withstood fourth-quarter surges by the San Antonio Spurs last Wednesday and the Raptors on Friday. The Spurs overcame a nine-point deficit to take a brief lead with a little more than four minutes, and the Raptors whittled a 16-point deficit in the final four minutes to two.

Jalen Brunson iced the win Friday for the Knicks by converting an old-fashioned three-point play with 22 seconds left.

NBA Preview: Chicago Bulls (19-21) at Boston Celtics (28-12)

0

Back-to-back wins in Dallas and San Antonio have the Boston Celtics feeling good as they return home for a pair of games.

The Celtics will look to add to their NBA-leading 28-12 record when they close a four-game season series with the Chicago Bulls — a team that has been responsible for two of Boston’s losses — on Monday night.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combined for 63 points in Boston’s sixth win in eight games, a 121-116 win at San Antonio on Saturday. Two nights earlier, the Celtics beat Dallas 124-95 for their biggest road win of the season.

Against the Spurs, Boston blew an 11-point lead before scoring the final five points of the game. Tatum had a game-high 34, including the go-ahead jumper with 33.7 seconds left.

The Celtics also got 23 points from key bench man Malcolm Brogdon, while center Robert Williams III also scored in the final minute to finish with 10 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots.

Williams played 22 minutes against the Spurs, matching his highest total of the season.

The Bulls visit Boston two games under .500 at 19-21, but they have won three straight for just the second time this season after downing Utah 126-118 Saturday at home.

Zach LaVine scored 36 points and DeMar DeRozan had 35 against the Jazz.

One of the two has led Chicago in scoring for 10 consecutive games.

LaVine has hit 17 3-pointers in his last two games, including a season-high 11 during a 41-point effort in Friday’s 126-112 win in Philadelphia.

Donovan said getting DeRozan to shoot between 10-15 threes per game would be an ideal range, as long as they come within the flow of the offense.

Tatum and DeRozan have paced their teams in all three head-to-head meetings between the Celtics and Bulls this season. Each game has been won by the home team, two in Chicago and one in Boston.

DeRozan scored a season-high 46 in a 123-119 losing effort to Boston on Nov. 4.

The Bulls responded with a 121-107 home victory on Nov. 21, snapping Boston’s season-long win streak at nine.

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (24-16) at Washington Wizards (17-23)

Road-weary Wizards glad to host depleted Pelicans

The Washington Wizards are glad to be back home.

The New Orleans Pelicans aren’t going to be home for a while.

The Wizards just completed a four-game road trip as they prepare to host the Pelicans on Monday night. New Orleans began its longest road trip of the season with a 127-117 loss at Dallas on Saturday. The game in Washington is the second game of a five-game road trip.

New Orleans played without its top three scorers — Zion Williamson (hamstring), Brandon Ingram (toe) and CJ McCollum (rest), who average a combined 67.2 points per game.

In their absence the Pelicans started with their lowest-scoring first quarter of the season, falling behind 34-15. After that they outscored Dallas 102-93.

McCollum likely will play against the Wizards. Ingram could return at some point during the trip and Williamson will be re-evaluated in a couple of weeks.

The absences gave other players expanded opportunities. One who took advantage was second-year forward Naji Marshall, who had a career-high for the second consecutive game and fourth time this season by scoring 24 points.

The Pelicans have lost their past three road games and six of their past seven away from home. They’ll conclude the season series against Washington on Jan. 28 in New Orleans.

Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. bemoaned his team’s lack of energy to start the last game of the road trip, a 127-110 loss at Oklahoma City on Friday night.

Like New Orleans did against Dallas, Washington dug itself a deep early hole, falling behind 35-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Washington had 20 turnovers and trailed by as many as 27 points. It lost the last two games of the road trip after winning the first two. It has played 10 of its past 12 games on the road, going 4-6 in those games.

Against the Pelicans, the Wizards won’t have — and played the Thunder without — leading scorer Bradley Beal, whose hamstring strain will be re-evaluated in about another week.

Seven From Sunday – Week 18

0

A look at seven statistical highlights from games played during the 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. ET windows on Sunday, January 8, the 18th week of the 2022 season.

  • NEW PLAYOFF TEAMS: Six of the 13 teams to qualify for the playoffs with one game remaining are new to the postseason in 2022, having missed the playoffs a year ago: Baltimore, Jacksonville, the Los Angeles Chargers, Miami, Minnesota and the New York Giants. The Seattle Seahawks can join this group with a Detroit victory over Green Bay on Sunday Night Football.

Since 1990 – a streak of 33 consecutive seasons – at least four teams every season have qualified for the playoffs after failing to make the postseason the year before.

NEW DIVISION WINNERS: The AFC South (Jacksonville) and NFC North (Minnesota) were both won by teams that missed the postseason in 2021. The Philadelphia Eagles (NFC East) and San Francisco 49ers (NFC West) are also new division winners this season.

At least two teams have won their divisions the season after missing the playoffs in 19 of the past 20 years.

In each of the past 45 seasons (1977-2021, excluding 1982, when divisional play did not occur), at least one team has won its division the season after missing the playoffs.
  • AFC PLAYOFF SEEDS: The KANSAS CITY CHIEFS, who won their seventh-consecutive AFC West division title, finished as the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

The Chiefs will have home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs unless they face Buffalo in the AFC Championship Game, as both teams could have been the number one seed and hosted the game had all AFC clubs played a full 17-game regular season. In that scenario, the AFC Championship Game will be played at a neutral site.

The BUFFALO BILLS, who won the AFC East for the third-consecutive season, finished as the AFC’s No. 2 seed and will host the No. 7 seed MIAMI DOLPHINS on Super Wild Card Weekend. The Dolphins earned their first playoff berth since 2016.

The CINCINNATI BENGALS, who won their second-consecutive AFC North division title, finished as the AFC’s No. 3 seed and will host the No. 6 seed BALTIMORE RAVENS on Super Wild Card Weekend. The Ravens clinched a spot in the postseason for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

The JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS, who completed a worst-to-first turnaround by winning the AFC South the year after finishing in last place, finished as the AFC’s No. 4 seed and will host the No. 5 seed LOS ANGELES CHARGERS on Super Wild Card Weekend. The Chargers clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2018.

In 18 of the past 20 seasons, at least one team finished in first place the season after finishing in last or tied for last place.
  • NFC PLAYOFF SEEDS: The PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, who won the NFC East for the first time since 2019, finished as the NFC’s No. 1 seed. The Eagles will have home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

The SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS, who clinched the NFC West for the first time since 2019, finished as the NFC’s No. 2 seed and will host either the GREEN BAY PACKERS or SEATTLE SEAHAWKS on Super Wild Card Weekend.

If Green Bay defeats Detroit on Sunday Night Football, Green Bay will be the No. 7 seed. If Detroit defeats Green Bay, Seattle will earn the No. 7 seed. Should Detroit-Green Bay end in a tie, Seattle would qualify for the postseason.

The MINNESOTA VIKINGS, who won the NFC North for the first time since 2017, finished as the NFC’s No. 3 seed and will host the No. 6 seed NEW YORK GIANTS on Super Wild Card Weekend. The Giants earned their first playoff berth since 2016.

The TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS, who clinched back-to-back NFC South division titles for the first time in franchise history, finished as the NFC’s No. 4 seed and will host the No. 5 seed DALLAS COWBOYS on Super Wild Card Weekend. The Cowboys clinched a postseason berth for the second-consecutive season.
  • CLOSE GAMES: With one game yet to be completed in Week 18, there have been 121 games decided by a touchdown (six points or less) and 202 games within one score (eight points) in the fourth quarter this season, both the most such games in a single season in NFL history.

COMEBACKSJACKSONVILLE overcame a 10-point deficit to win on Saturday and there have been 52 games in which a team has overcome a deficit of at least 10 points to win or tie this season, the most such games in a single season all-time.

FANTASTIC FINISHES: Four teams – CAROLINAHOUSTONMIAMI and SEATTLE – recorded game-winning scores in the final two minutes of regulation or in overtime in Week 18. There have been 66 games this season decided by a game-winning score in the final two minutes of regulation or in overtime, the most such games in a single season in NFL history.

Houston, Jacksonville and Seattle each came back to win after trailing in the fourth quarter and there have been 84 games this season in which a team has come back to win or tie after trailing in the fourth quarter, the most such games in a single season all-time.
  • Buffalo quarterback JOSH ALLEN passed for 254 yards and three touchdowns while running back NYHEIM HINES recorded kickoff-return touchdowns of 96 and 101 yards in the Bills’ 35-23 win over New England.

Allen, who had 4,283 passing yards and 35 touchdown passes this season, is the sixth player in NFL history with at least three career seasons with 4,000 passing yards and 35 touchdown passes, joining AARON RODGERS (six seasons), TOM BRADY (five), PATRICK MAHOMES (four), Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING (four) and DREW BREES (four).

  • Tampa Bay quarterback TOM BRADY completed 13 of 17 pass attempts (76.5 percent) and threw his 25th touchdown pass of the season on Sunday.

Brady recorded 490 completions this season, surpassing the mark he set last year (485) for the most completions in a season in NFL history.

Brady has 17 career seasons with at least 25 touchdown passes and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING (16 seasons) for the most such seasons in NFL history.

Phillies acquire Gregory Soto and Kody Clemens from Tigers

0

The Phillies have acquired left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto and utility player Kody Clemens from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for infielder Nick Maton, outfielder Matt Vierling and catcher Donny Sands, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

An American League All-Star each of the last two seasons (2021-22), Soto appeared in a career-high 64 games for Detroit in 2022 and tallied 30 saves, also a career high, in 33 opportunities.  Overall, the 27-year-old went 2-11 with a 3.28 ERA with 60 strikeouts in 60.1 innings pitched.

Per Statcast data, Soto led all left-handed pitchers last season with an average four-seam fastball at 98.7 MPH.  His sinker averaged 98.1 MPH, which ranked third among all left-handers, behind only Aroldis Chapman (100.2 MPH) and José Alvarado (99.6 MPH).

Soto was one of only 10 relievers in the majors with at least 30 saves in 2022 and his 48 saves over the last two seasons are sixth-most in the American League.  In that same span, his save percentage of 92.3 percent (48-for-52) ranks second in the majors behind only Josh Hader (93.3%).

For his major league career, Soto has gone 8-20 with 50 saves, a 4.13 ERA (94 ER, 204.2 IP) and 210 strikeouts, all with the Tigers (2019-22).  The Dominican Republic native was originally signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on Dec. 26, 2012.

Clemens, 26, split the 2022 season between triple-A Toledo and Detroit, which included his major league debut.  With Toledo, Clemens batted .274 (66-for-241) with 12 doubles, six triples, 13 home runs, 43 RBI and 41 runs scored over 60 games.  In 56 games for Detroit, the Texas native batted .145 (17-for-117) with four doubles, five home runs, 17 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Defensively, Clemens appeared for the Tigers at third base (17 games), first base (13 games), second base (9 games), left field (9 games) and worked 7.0 innings over seven appearances as a pitcher.

Clemens, who was selected by the Tigers in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft from the University of Texas, is the son of former pitcher Roger Clemens.

Vierling, 26, played in 117 games with the Phillies last season, and an additional 12 in the postseason.  He batted .260 with 15 doubles, eight home runs and 38 RBI in parts of two seasons with the Phillies.  He was selected by the club in the fifth round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

Maton, a seventh-round selection by the Phillies in 2017, also appeared in the majors with the club each of the last two seasons, appearing in 86 regular season games and one in the 2022 postseason.  The 25-year-old is a career .254 hitter in 216 plate appearances.

Sands, 26, was acquired along with right-hander Nick Nelson from the New York Yankees in November 2021.  He spent the majority of the 2022 season with triple-A Lehigh Valley and appeared in three major league games with the club.
