NBA Preview: Oklahoma City Thunder (20-23) at Brooklyn Nets (27-14)

0

In their first game without Kevin Durant for at least two weeks, the Brooklyn Nets struggled to find offense, especially down the stretch against the Boston Celtics.

After producing one of their lowest-scoring games of the season, the Nets play their second game without Durant when they host the improving Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night.

Brooklyn is dealing with a knee injury to Durant for the second straight season. Sunday marks the one-year anniversary of a sprained left knee that cost him 21 games and saw the Nets lose 15 times.

In their first game since Durant sprained his left knee in a collision with Jimmy Butler a week ago in Miami, the Nets were held to 16 points in the fourth quarter and could not keep pace with the NBA’s best team in a 109-98 loss Thursday night.

The Nets were held under 100 points for the sixth time and shot 45.2 percent after shooting at least 50 percent in 11 of their previous 15. Brooklyn also fell to 14-2 in its past 16 games and is hoping to avoid consecutive losses for the first time since Nov. 13-15, when consecutive road losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings dropped its record to 6-9.

The Nets are also hoping for a more efficient showing from Kyrie Irving. Irving led Brooklyn with 24 points but also shot 9-of-24, including a 3-of-10 showing in the fourth quarter.

T.J. Warren added 20 off the bench after being considered a possible replacement for Durant in the starting lineup. Joe Harris added 18 while Ben Simmons finished with 13 assists while also going scoreless and acknowledging he needs to be more aggressive.

Oklahoma City’s performances are trending upwards of late and it is seeking its third three-game winning streak. Since enduring consecutive two-point losses to Memphis and Minnesota Dec. 16-17 to cap a five-game losing streak, the Thunder are 9-5 over their past 14 contests.

Oklahoma City’s recent surge includes scoring 150 points in a 33-point rout of the Celtics Jan. 3 and Thursday’s 133-114 victory in Philadelphia. After halting a six-game road skid Thursday, the Thunder withstood a shaky third quarter before pulling away for a 124-110 win over the Chicago Bulls on Friday.

Oklahoma City held an 18-point lead early in the second half and then shot 58 percent and scored 33 points in the final quarter after its lead was trimmed to one.

Giddey helped Oklahoma City down the stretch with 11 of his 25 points in the fourth while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 21 after getting 37 in Philadelphia.

Oklahoma City also is seeking its sixth straight win in Brooklyn as its only road loss to the Nets since 2015-16 occurred in Mexico City in December 2017. In its 130-109 victory over Brooklyn on Jan. 13, 2022, Gilgeous-Alexander collected 33 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

NBA Preview: Golden State Warriors (21-21) at Chicago Bulls (19-24)

0

The Golden State Warriors are expected to have all hands on deck and encounter a short-handed opponent for a change when they visit the Chicago Bulls on Sunday afternoon.

In their third game since Stephen Curry returned from a dislocated left shoulder and fourth since Andrew Wiggins came back from a strained adductor/illness, Golden State will be seeking a second consecutive road win for the first time this season on the second stop of a five-city trip.

The Warriors began the journey in record-breaking fashion, entertaining the biggest crowd ever to attend an NBA game (68,323) with a 144-point explosion in a 31-point romp over the San Antonio Spurs at the Alamodome on Friday night.

Golden State had its preferred starting lineup of Curry, Klay Thompson, Wiggins, Draymond Green and Kevon Looney together for just the second time since Dec. 2, and all five contributed significantly to the win.

Thompson and Wiggins had 16 points apiece and Curry was right behind with 15, while Green recorded a game-high 12 rebounds to go with six points, four assists and three steals, and Looney posted a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Even the Warriors’ much maligned bench took the opportunity to shine, with Jordan Poole running up the game’s most points (25) and Donte DiVincenzo adding 22, while Anthony Lamb (13) and Moses Moody (12) also scored in double figures.

On a night DiVincenzo labeled “cool and surreal,” Curry jokingly noted, “It takes (over) 64,000 to bring our best road performance of the year.”

While the defending-champion gang is back together, the Bulls will limp into the game having lost three in a row, the last two to the Washington Wizards on the road and Oklahoma City Thunder at home.

Alex Caruso observed after Friday’s 124-110 home embarrassment against the Thunder that it’s time for the 19-24 club to take a step back.

It also would be nice to get all the club’s big pieces back, but nobody is quite sure when that might happen. Point guard Lonzo Ball hasn’t played in a year and a day after two knee surgeries and remains out indefinitely. DeMar DeRozan has missed the last two games with a strained right quad. And Zach LaVine has been playing through a painful bruise on his right hand.

The Bulls had DeRozan and LaVine available in a 119-111 loss at Golden State in December. The Warriors had their regular starting five in place, with Thompson leading the way with 26 points.

Thompson wasn’t available a year ago when the Warriors last visited Chicago and had an Alamodome-type performance in a 138-96 romp. Starting in Thompson’s spot, Poole had 22 points.

NBA Preview: Houston Rockets (10-32) at Los Angeles Clippers (22-22)

0

The Los Angeles Clippers appeared to be on the verge of putting their fractured pieces together.

After claiming both games of a back-to-back in Detroit and Toronto just after Christmas, the Clippers – who host the struggling Houston Rockets on Sunday — climbed to six games over .500 by capping a stretch of seven wins in nine games. They had labored as Paul George and Kawhi Leonard worked their way back from injuries in pursuit of cohesion, and that span of success appeared to portend more wins down the road.

The stability the Clippers thought they captured has proven elusive. With their 115-103 home loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday, the Clippers fell to .500 (22-22) with their seventh loss in eight games.

George has missed four consecutive games with a bothersome hamstring and, while Leonard has found his form by averaging 28.7 points, eight rebounds, four assists and 2.3 steals over his last three games, the Clippers have been unable to sustain a healthy roster.

Lue turned to Terance Mann as the starting point guard, moving former starter Reggie Jackson completely out of the rotation. The results have been mixed, with Mann – previously a shooting guard previously — working through the difficult transition on a roster that can’t quite get whole.

The Rockets’ defensive woes remain pronounced. In their 139-114 road loss to the Sacramento Kings on Friday, the Rockets allowed Sacramento to shoot 57.1 percent in the second half, including 13 of 23 from behind the arc. The Kings’ breakaway 43-point third quarter featured 65.2 percent shooting overall with 6-of-12 proficiency from deep and 7-of-7 shooting from the free-throw line.

The Rockets have dropped nine consecutive games and 14 of 15 overall. During their skid, their 122.6 defensive rating ranks last in the NBA. Houston is 28th overall in defensive rating at 116.7, ranking ahead of only the Pistons and San Antonio Spurs.

At this point, the Rockets’ defensive issues are myriad. Against the Kings, their problems were specific and endemic simultaneously, and with the losses mounting so too has the frustration.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks (24-19) at Detroit Pistons (12-34)

0

The New York Knicks are having trouble finishing what they started but they’ve still won six of their last seven games. They’ll seek a better closing punch when they visit Detroit on Sunday afternoon.

In their only loss during that stretch, Milwaukee outscored New York by nine points in the fourth quarter to notch a 111-107 victory on Monday.

Indiana outscored New York 72-57 in the second half on Wednesday but the Knicks hung on for a 119-113 win. Then on Friday, New York nearly gave away a 15-point, fourth-quarter advantage in a 112-108 win at Washington.

The latest tightrope act didn’t end safely until Brunson made four free throws in the final 14 seconds. He finished with 34 points and eight assists.

Brunson has been on a scoring binge this month, averaging 33.3 points, 6.0 assists and 5.7 rebounds.

His latest big game offset a 40-point performance from Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma.

The Knicks have dominated the Pistons over the past several years. They’ve won the last 11 meetings, including three this season.

Julius Randle has averaged 24.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists against Detroit this season.

Randle could be in line for another big game against Detroit’s depleted frontcourt. The Pistons were overpowered by New Orleans center Jonas Valanciunas in a 116-110 loss on Friday.

Valanciunas racked up 33 points, 16 rebounds and three assists against a Pistons team that was forced to start third-string center Nerlens Noel for the third straight game. Isaiah Stewart (shoulder), Jalen Duren (ankle) and Marvin Bagley III (hand) are all sidelined.

Coach Dwane Casey resorted to using double teams to contain Valanciunas, which led to open shooters on the perimeter.

Detroit has lost four of its last five contests. The Pistons will head to Paris, France, this week to face Chicago on Thursday.
