0

The Orioles today announced that they have opened the 2022-23 International Signing Period with 27 contract agreements, tied for the most in club history (2019-20). Highlighting the Orioles’ 2022-23 international signing class are: shortstop LUIS ALMEYDA, the highest-paid international signee in club history, shortstop JOSHUA LIRANZO, infielder JOSÉ MEJÍA, shortstop FÉLIX AMPARO, right-handed pitcher KEELER MORFE, shortstop LUIS GUEVARA, and left-handed pitcher FRANCISCO MORAO. Additionally, six more of the group are six-figure agreements. Of the 27 total agreements, 14 are from the Dominican Republic, 11 are from Venezuela, and one each from Colombia and Cuba. The signing class includes nine pitchers, eight infielders, six catchers, and four outfielders.

Almeyda, 16, was born and grew up in New Jersey before moving to the Dominican Republic. He is ranked as the No. 17 international prospect by Baseball America and No. 20 by MLB Pipeline. He is a solid, everyday type of player who can impact the game with his combination of power and hit tools. He is short to the ball with a quick and explosive swing, flashing plus power potential. At six feet, two inches tall, Almeyda has the ball skills to play shortstop, but could move to third base as he matures. He is a solid defender with plus arm strength.

Liranzo, 16, is a shortstop from the Dominican Republic who showcases immense power with a loose swing and plus-plus bat speed. His power and hit tools give him the makings to be an everyday player capable of plus offensive production. In the field, he shows loose defensive action with good footwork and a plus arm.

Mejía, 17, a native of the Dominican Republic, profiles as an offensive second baseman. He is regarded as one of the best hitters in the 2022-23 class. A strong fastball hitter who can see spin, he projects to have a hit tool of 60 with a chance to develop 50 power. Defensively, he is solid in the infield and makes the routine plays. A natural leader with good instincts, Mejía also speaks English, which can make for an easier transition to playing in the United States.

Amparo, 16, is a shortstop from the Dominican Republic with a chance to be a plus hitter in the future. Standing five feet, 10 inches tall and weighing in at 145 pounds, he showcases surprising pop for his frame and is an excellent fastball hitter. On the dirt, he has good feet and soft hands with superb body control and a plus arm. A plus runner, his combination of offense and speed will see him stick at shortstop.

Morfe, a 16-year-old right-hander from Venezuela, is regarded as one of the better pitchers in the 2022-23 class. He boasts three plus pitches: a fastball that touches 95 mph with sinking action and plus command, a sharp, 81-83 mph slider with hard three-quarter rotation that is especially effective against right-handed batters, and a deceptive, 85-87 mph changeup with plus command. His pitchability is advanced for his age and his overall makeup is impressive.

Guevara, 16, is a switch-hitting shortstop from Venezuela with excellent leadoff hitter makeup. One of the better Venezuelan hitters in the 2022-23 class, he has outstanding bat-to-ball skills and a nice, easy swing through the zone from both sides of the plate. He showcases advanced hitting ability and power potential to the gaps. He is sound defensively and flows with loose, controlled movements. He projects to remain in the middle infield and shows plus arm strength. He grades out as a 65 runner who will be a threat on the basepaths.

Morao, 17, is a left-handed pitcher from Venezuela who projects as a middle-of-the-rotation starter. At six feet, two inches tall and 180 pounds, he has an impressive, athletic frame and a strong presence on the mound. A strike thrower, his pitch mix includes a fastball that reaches 92 mph with a lot of movement and plus life, a decent changeup that will be average in the future, and his strikeout pitch, a sharp 12-6 curveball with good rotation.

“We are thrilled to welcome these talented individuals and their families to Birdland,” said KOBY PEREZ, Orioles Senior Director, International Scouting. “Today’s announcement is tied for the most contract agreements to open the International Signing Period in Orioles history with 2019-20 – as well as the club’s highest-paid international signee, Luis Almeyda – and would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our staff, and of course the continued support of our international efforts from Mike Elias and the Partnership Group.”

During his tenure, Carolina earned a 655-623-111-101 regular-season record (.511) and a 41-37 postseason record, winning three division titles (1998-99, 2001-02, 2005-06), two conference titles (2001-02, 2005-06) and the franchise’s only Stanley Cup (2006).

GOING BACK-TO-BACK
The Hurricanes are closing their seventh of 14 sets of back-to-back games in 2022-23. With a win over the Penguins on Saturday, Carolina is now 4-2-1 in the first game and 6-0-0 in the second game of back-to-backs this season. The Hurricanes’ 12 points in the second game of back-to-backs are tied with STL (6-3-0) for the most of any NHL team in 2022-23, and they are one of two teams without a loss in any such contest this season (SEA: 2-0-0).

NHL Morning Skate – Jan. 15, 2023

* The League’s newest franchise achieved an NHL-first by sweeping their seven-game road trip.

Alex Ovechkin isn’t done making NHL history – he scored Saturday to move into a tie with a longtime Capitals forward atop the League’s all-time list for most 30-goal seasons.

Patrik Laine accounted for three of his team’s four goals and joined a rare list of NHL players with a double-digit hat trick total before age 25.

BUOY OH BUOY, WHAT A ROAD TRIP FOR THE KRAKEN!
The Kraken converted on six of their first seven shots in the opening 13:11 of the game en route to an 8-5 win against the Blackhawks, with the victory making Seattle the first team in NHL history to sweep a road trip of at least seven contests.

* The Kraken, who scored eight goals in a game for a League-leading fourth time this season and extended their overall winning streak to a franchise-record eight contests, outscored opponents by a combined 37-15 margin since their road trip began on Jan. 3. Seattle’s +22 goal differential marked the highest by a team during a road trip of seven or more contests in NHL history, eclipsing the previous mark of +21 by Chicago during an eight-game journey (37 GF & 16 GA from Jan. 29–Feb. 13, 1995).

Jared McCann (6-1—7 in 7 GP) scored the first hat trick of his NHL career to conclude the road trip with six goals, tied with Matty Beniers (6-5—11 in 7 GP) for the team lead. Beniers had 1-1—2 on Saturday, while Vince Dunn (0-1—1) and Adam Larsson (0-1—1) each were +6 in the first period.

FLAMES, AVALANCHE ALSO SECURE HIGH-SCORING VICTORIES
Seattle wasn’t the only team to score several goals in a win Saturday:

Chris Tanev (1-1—2) gave the Flames a five-goal lead with 2:03 remaining in the second period before Calgary withstood a comeback attempt by Dallas to hang on for a 6-5 victory at American Airlines Center. The Stars nearly became the 11th team in NHL history to win a regular-season game after rallying from a five-goal deficit and first since the Blackhawks did so against the Flames over 13 years ago (6-5 OT W on Oct. 12, 2009).

Mikko Rantanen recorded his League-leading 23rd and 24th even-strength goals of the season as the Avalanche skated to a 7-0 victory versus the Senators. It marked the fourth instance of the franchise earning a shutout win by a margin of seven or more goals, following 8-0 victories on Jan. 15, 2021 and March 13, 1985 as well as a 7-0 triumph on Dec. 13, 1986.

OVI TIES NHL RECORD FOR MOST 30-GOAL SEASONS; LAINE SCORES 10TH HAT TRICK

Alex Ovechkin (30-19—49 in 45 GP) tied longtime Capitals forward Mike Gartner for the most 30-goal seasons in NHL history and became the fifth player in League history to score 400 home goals, with that list also featuring Gartner. Ovechkin was one of two players to reach the 30-goal mark Saturday (also Bo Horvat).

* Patrik Laine scored three goals in the opening 21:32 to record the 10th hat trick of his NHL career and second with Columbus (also Feb. 17, 2022). Laine became the 17th player in League history with a double-digit hat trick total before age 25 – Ovechkin had nine before his 25th birthday on Sept. 17, 2010.

DAHLIN CONTINUES TO PRODUCE IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES

NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (26-16) at Los Angeles Lakers (19-23)

0

Much improved, although with nothing to show for it over the past two games, the Los Angeles Lakers will move forward on Sunday night with a formidable test against the visiting Philadelphia 76ers.

The Lakers hung tough for four quarters and two extra periods before absorbing a 119-115 double-overtime defeat to the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Thursday.

The Lakers appeared to find a way forward with Russell Westbrook playing late-game tight defense on Dallas superstar Luka Doncic, and the plan nearly paid dividends. Doncic made just two baskets combined in the fourth quarter and first overtime, but they were clutch 3-pointers to extend the game each time.

In the end, Doncic delivered his 10th triple-double of the season with 35 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists. But the Lakers’ determination forced Doncic to stay on the court and play all but nine seconds of the 34 minutes after halftime.

Westbrook had 28 points and seven rebounds, but Los Angeles has dropped consecutive games since a five-game winning streak that came on the heels of James’ post-Christmas challenge to his teammates to follow his lead.

It was the Lakers’ third consecutive defeat in overtime games, with one of those a 133-122 decision at Philadelphia on Dec. 9. That was when Anthony Davis was on the court for Los Angeles. Davis has missed the past 14 games with a stress injury to his right foot, but there are reports that he has resumed physical activity again and is on the road to a return.

The Sixers received 38 points and 12 rebounds from Joel Embiid in the December victory over the Lakers. Embiid missed three games earlier this month with soreness in his left foot, then played in three consecutive contests, including Saturday’s 118-117 victory over the Utah Jazz, when he hit the go-ahead step-back jumper with 5.7 seconds remaining.

Embiid finished with 30 points and James Harden had 31, including 18 in the fourth quarter. Embiid and Harden scored 23 of the Sixers’ final 26 points.

Philadelphia now has a quick turnaround into Sunday’s game at Los Angeles, with no indication yet on whether Embiid will play on the second night of a back-to-back. He played 36 minutes Saturday.

With the Sixers working through a number of injuries to Harden, Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, a conservative approach wouldn’t be out of the question as Philadelphia attempts to stay healthy for a strong second half of the regular season.

NBA Preview: Dallas Mavericks (24-20) at Portland Trail Blazers (20-22)

0

Damian Lillard prevailed in the first round of the two-day heavyweight battle, but Luka Doncic surely will strive to have his own show-stopping performance in Sunday night’s rematch when the Portland Trail Blazers again host the Dallas Mavericks.

Portland rolled to a 136-119 win over the Mavericks on Saturday when Doncic never found his groove and was held to a season-low 15 points — 19 points below his season average. Lillard had 36 points and 10 assists as the Trail Blazers halted a season-worst five-game slide.

Doncic, the NBA scoring leader, was hounded into 7-of-19 shooting and missed all five 3-point attempts in Saturday’s game.

He also seemed a bit tired after playing a career-high 53 minutes in Thursday’s 119-115 double-overtime road win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Lillard made four 3-pointers as the Trail Blazers halted a six-game skid in the series against Dallas.

But he also was wary with a second dose of Doncic still to come — especially with the Dallas star likely motivated to make up for his shakiest outing of the season.

Lillard also moved into second place in Trail Blazers history with 4,939 career assists, passing Hall of Fame member Clyde Drexler (4,933). Portland’s all-time leader is Terry Porter with 5,319.

Jusuf Nurkic (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Anfernee Simons (21 points) also had strong outings for Portland, which owned a whopping 47-25 rebounding edge.

The victory was just the fourth in the past 14 games for the Trail Blazers.

Short-handed Dallas is 1-3 on a five-game road swing and played without big man Christian Wood (right ankle) on Saturday. Also, Tim Hardaway Jr. departed with a left ankle injury during Saturday’s game and his availability could be in question.

Other Dallas players who sat out Saturday were forwards Dorian Finney-Smith (adductor), Maxi Kleber (hamstring) and guard Josh Green (elbow).

The bright spot for the Mavericks was the play of Reggie Bullock, who scored a season-high 24 points on a career-best eight 3-pointers.

Bullock was just 11 of 41 (26.8) from 3-point range over the past eight games. He said a pep talk from Dallas coach Jason Kidd helped him rediscover his stroke.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (16-27) at Denver Nuggets (29-13)

0

Nikola Jokic is in the midst of another MVP-caliber season, so when he sat out Denver’s game at the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night, it seemed like the Nuggets were vulnerable.

Instead, Denver showed it is much more than just Jokic with a 115-103 win over the Clippers — its 15th win in the last 18 games.

Jokic (wrist) missed his first game due to injury — he was out for three games in November due to health and safety protocols — but his injury isn’t considered serious and he could play Sunday night when Denver hosts the Orlando Magic.

When Jokic missed time over the past two seasons, it was problematic because depth and experience were lacking on the roster. This year, with offseason moves to bring in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Bruce Brown, the continued maturation of Bones Hyland and the return of Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr., the Nuggets are capable of winning without the two-time MVP.

Murray and Porter have had ups and downs as they work themselves back into game condition. Murray missed all of 2021-22 while rehabbing from his left ACL repair, and Porter played just nine games before having back surgery.

Murray has started to look like he did before tearing his ACL on April 12, 2021, while Porter’s road back was derailed by a left heel strain that cost him a month in November and December.

Orlando is coming off a four-point loss at Utah on Friday night but has played well after dropping 20 of its first 25 games. The Magic have gone 11-7 since but will face a tough task against a Denver team that has won 12 straight at home. However, the Magic were encouraged by the effort in the 112-108 loss to the Jazz.

The Nuggets will get their first look at Orlando rookie Paolo Banchero, who leads the team in scoring at 21.2 points a game. Sunday will also see the return of Gary Harris and Bol Bol. Harris was traded to the Magic in 2021 in the deal that brought Aaron Gordon to the Nuggets, while Bol was traded to Boston last year and flipped to the Magic a month later.

Bol showed flashes of talent while with Denver but couldn’t break the rotation. He is getting the chance with Orlando and is making the most of it. He is averaging career-highs in points (11.8), minutes (25.9) and rebounds (7.0) and has played 38 games.

NBA Preview: Sacramento Kings (23-18) at San Antonio Spurs (13-30)

0

The Sacramento Kings look to build on a three-game winning streak and on their best start in 17 years when they square off against the struggling San Antonio Spurs on Sunday in the Alamo City.

The matchup is between the highest-scoring team in the NBA (Sacramento) and the squad that allows the most points in the league (San Antonio).

The Kings (23-18) are five games over .500 for the first time since 2006, which is also the most recent year Sacramento has earned a spot in the postseason.

The Kings head to Texas after a 139-114 home win over Houston on Friday — the second win over the Rockets in a two-day span. Domantas Sabonis had 19 points, 15 rebounds and a career-high 16 assists to produce his fourth triple-double of the season and set the pace for Sacramento.

Harrison Barnes had a team-high 27 points for the Kings, De’Aaron Fox added 24, Terence Davis scored 22, Malik Monk hit for 15 and Trey Lyles tallied 13 off the bench as Sacramento shot 54.7 percent from the floor and canned 20 of their 40 3-point attempts.

The victory was punctuated by the fourth-quarter ejections of the Kings’ Monk and Chimezie Metu and Houston’s Garrison Mathews and Tari Eason when two pairs tussled after Matthews fouled Monk during the chase for a loose ball.

San Antonio (13-20) looks to get back on the winning track after a 144-113 home-away-from home loss to Golden State on Friday. The game was played in the Alamodome, the Spurs’ home from 1993-2002, and set an NBA regular-season attendance mark of 68,323.

Most of those fans went home unhappy when San Antonio got blown away by the defending champions, giving up 81 points over the two middle periods after which it trailed by 25 points on the way its fourth straight loss and seventh in the past eight games.

Tre Jones paced San Antonio with 21 points in the setback, with Keldon Johnson scoring 17, Doug McDermott adding 14, Malaki Branham hitting for 12 points and Romeo Langford tallying 11. The 144 points surrendered by the Spurs were the most in a game this season.

The Kings have won the past three games against San Antonio, including a 130-112 decision in Sacramento on Nov. 17.
