Rays sign Jeffrey Springs to four-year extension

0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rays have signed left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Springs to a four-year, $31 million contract through the 2026 season, including a club option for the 2027 season. The pact is worth up to $65.75 million if the club option is exercised, innings pitched incentives are reached and Cy Young Award escalators are triggered.

Springs, 30, is 14-6 with a 2.70 ERA (180-IP, 54-ER) in 76 appearances (25 starts) since being acquired by the Rays in February 2021. Last season, he transitioned to the starting rotation in May and enjoyed a breakout campaign, going 9-5 with a 2.46 ERA (135.1-IP, 37-ER) in 33 appearances (25 starts). Min. 100 IP, his 2.46 ERA ranked second in franchise history behind Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell (1.89) in 2018, and it ranked sixth in the American League behind the top four in Cy Young Award voting—HOU Justin Verlander (1.75), CHW Dylan Cease (2.20), TOR Alek Manoah (2.24) and LAA Shohei Ohtani (2.33)—and eighth-place NYY Nestor Cortes (2.44). Min. 100 IP, Springs ranked 10th in the AL with a 29.6 pct. swing-and-miss rate, 13th with a 1.07 WHIP and 13th with a 4.65 SO/BB ratio. He allowed three runs (or fewer) in 22 of 25 starts and two runs (or fewer) 17 times. He went 6-3 with a 2.40 ERA (71.1-IP, 19-ER) in 14 starts after the All-Star break.

Last season, eight of his first nine appearances through May 3 came out of the bullpen, starting a bullpen day on April 28 (2.2 IP) over that stretch. He went 3.1 IP in relief on May 3 before officially joining the starting rotation on May 9 at the Los Angeles Angels. From April 28–May 27, he increased his workload in six consecutive appearances (five starts), including 5.2 IP and 6 IP in starts from May 21-27. He became a regular member of a starting rotation for the first time since 2017, when he spent the entire season with Class-A Down East and his first 17 appearances came as a starter, going 1-8 with a 4.60 ERA (90-IP, 46-ER) in that role. He transitioned to the Down East bullpen on July 26 that season.

Springs was acquired by the Rays with right-handed pitcher Chris Mazza and cash considerations from the Boston Red Sox on February 17, 2021 in exchange for catcher Ronaldo Hernández and minor league infielder Nick Sogard. He was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 30th round of the 2015 Amateur Draft out of Appalachian State University.

Boston Designates Right-Handed Pitcher Matt Barnes for Assignment

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today signed outfielder Adam Duvall to a one-year contract for the 2023 season. To make room for Duvall on the 40-man roster, Boston designated right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes for assignment.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Duvall, 34, is a four-time Gold Glove Award finalist (2016-18, ’21), winning the award as an outfielder in 2021 during the Atlanta Braves’ World Series championship season. That year, he hit a career-high 38 home runs and led the National League in RBI (113), one of three seasons in which he has recorded at least 30 home runs and 99 RBI (also 2016-17). A 2016 All-Star, Duvall has made 513 career starts in left field, 93 in right field, 68 in center field, 27 at first base, three at designated hitter, and one at third base. Since the start of 2016, he leads NL outfielders in defensive runs saved (59) and ranks second in assists (48).

Selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 11th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Louisville, Duvall has hit .230 (637-for-2,770) with a .754 OPS, 163 home runs, and 478 RBI in 830 career games with the Giants (2014), Cincinnati Reds (2015-18), Miami Marlins (2021), and Braves (2018-22). In 2022, the right-handed batter hit .213 (61-for-287) with 16 doubles, one triple, and 12 home runs in 86 games for Atlanta while making 43 starts in center field, 26 in left field, and 11 in right field.

In 27 career Postseason games, Duvall has hit .200 (18-for-90) with five home runs and 18 RBI, including two home runs and six RBI during the 2021 World Series. He has four home runs in four career games at Fenway Park, including a three-homer performance on September 2, 2020. In the summer of 2009, Duvall played for Sanford of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Barnes, 32, made 44 appearances for the Red Sox in 2022, posting a 4.31 ERA (19 ER/39.2 IP) with eight saves. The right-hander owns a 4.07 ERA (195 ER/431.2 IP) with 47 saves and 547 strikeouts in 429 career appearances (two starts), all with Boston from 2014-22. Selected by the Red Sox with the 19th pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, the Connecticut native ranks second in Red Sox history in both relief appearances and strikeouts in relief.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
• Tonight’s matchup is the third of four games the Kraken will play against the Canucks this season and the final one that will be played in Seattle. The teams will next meet on April 4 in Vancouver. The Kraken are looking for their first-ever win against the Canucks.

• The Kraken have not allowed a power-play goal for four consecutive games going a perfect 8-for-8 during that span. If they were to remain perfect on the penalty kill tonight, it would mark the second time this season that they did not allow a power-play goal for five or more straight games. The team previously went six straight games from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11 without allowing a powerplay goal.

• Entering play Tuesday, the Kraken led the Pacific Division in points percentage (.641) and ranked second with 59 points. The team’s plus-22 goal differential this season also tied for the best mark the Pacific Division entering play Tuesday and was tied for ninth in the NHL.

• With 46 games played, the Kraken have already matched their win total (27) from the 2021-22 season. They enter tonight’s game one point shy of matching their total (60) from last year.

• Since the start of the New Year, the Kraken are leading the league in wins (nine, tied), points (19) and goals (49). Their 3.08 goals for per game are the second-most in the league during that span, and they are one of only three teams (Edmonton, New Jersey) to be averaging four or more goals per game in 2023.

NHL Morning Skate – Jan. 25, 2023

0

* Kris Letang returned to the Penguins’ lineup after an 11-game absence and made an immediate impact – recording 2-2—4, which also included scoring the overtime winner.

* The Bruins picked up another two points Tuesday and made NHL history by requiring the fewest games by any team to collect 80 standings points in a single season.

* Andrei Vasilevskiy earned his 250th career victory as the Lightning collected their 10th consecutive win at AMALIE Arena and moved within one of matching their franchise record for longest home win streak.

* The NHL announced details of the 2023 NHL All-Star Skills presented by DraftKings Sportsbook and the format of the seven events on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7:00 p.m. ET (ESPN, Sportsnet, TVA Sports).

LETANG MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT IN RETURN AS PENGUINS OUTLAST PANTHERS

In a contest that featured five combined game-tying goals and three lead changes, Kris Letang (2-2—4) returned to the Penguins after missing 11 games between sustaining a lower-body injury and returning to Montreal for the death of his father. His first point of the night helped Pittsburgh initiate a multi-goal comeback in the first period and his fourth marked his ninth career overtime goal.

* The Penguins became the sixth team to overcome three separate deficits en route to a win this month and Tuesday marked the fourth game of 2022-23 to feature two teams combine for five game-tying goals following Nov. 29, 2022 (SEA at LAK: 6), Nov. 1, 2022 (ANA at SJS: 5) and Oct. 27, 2022 (EDM at CHI: 5).

Sidney Crosby (1-2—3) and Evgeni Malkin (1-2—3) each collected assists on Letang’s 30th career game-winning goal on an evening that featured the trio each post at least three points in the same game for just the second time following March 27, 2022 (regular season or playoffs). Overall, Pittsburgh improved to 36-1-0 when all three have multiple points in the same game (regular season & playoffs).

MORE OT MAGIC FROM THE TUESDAY SLATE

In addition to the high-scoring overtime thriller in Pittsburgh, three other teams also left the ice with a victory in extra time:

* Dougie Hamilton (2-0—2) tied the game with 70 seconds remaining in regulation and netted his second overtime goal in as many games (also Jan. 22 vs. PIT) to help the Devils (31-12-4, 66 points) improve to 7-0-1 in their past eight contests. New Jersey moved into a tie, in terms of standings points, with Carolina (29-9-8, 66 points) atop the Metropolitan Division; the latter holds one game in hand.

* Kevin Fiala (17-34—51 in 50 GP) assisted on Los Angeles’ first goal of the game and reached the 50-point mark on the season before scoring in overtime to help the Kings (27-17-6, 60 points) leapfrog the idle Kraken (27-14-5, 59 points) for second place in the Pacific Division standings. Fiala also became the first player to record his first 50 points with the Kings franchise in 50 games or fewer since Pavol Demitra (41 GP in 2005-06).

* Andrew Copp scored his second career overtime goal to propel the Red Wings (20-18-8, 48 points) to victory and within eight points of the Capitals (25-19-6, 56 points) for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference with four games in hand. Copp (Ann Arbor, Mich.) became the sixth different Michigan-born skater to score a regular-season overtime goal for Detroit, a list topped by teammate Dylan Larkin (7) – who reached the 400-point milestone in the victory.

PASTRNAK PROPELS BRUINS TO 80 POINTS AND AN NHL-FIRST
Patrice Bergeron (1-0—1) netted the go-ahead goal with 2:55 remaining in regulation and David Pastrnak (1-3—4) posted the highest point total by a Boston skater in Montreal in nearly 40 years as the NHL-leading Bruins (38-5-4, 80 points) required the fewest games by a team in League history to reach the 80-point mark in a single season.

* Pastrnak (37-32—69 in 47 GP) sits third in the Art Ross Trophy race this season and is one of five players with 30-plus goals and 30-plus assists – reaching the mark in 47 games or fewer for the second time in his career (2019-20: 42 GP). He joined Phil Esposito (5x; last: 33 GP in 1974-75) as the second player in Bruins history to do so multiple times.

SABRES SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN, INCH CLOSER TO A PLAYOFF SPOT
Jeff Skinner (1-1—2) became Buffalo’s fourth 20-goal scorer of the season 60 seconds into the contest and Owen Power found the back of the net for the second time in as many games as the Sabres (25-19-3, 53 points) benefited from an early 4-0 lead en route to their fourth straight victory. Their four 20-goal scorers are tied with Edmonton for the most among all teams in 2022-23.

* Buffalo, which moved within three points of Washington (25-19-6, 56 points) for the second Willd Card spot in the Eastern Conference and hold three games in hand, have scored six goals within the opening minute of a contest this season. The only other campaigns in which they have scored as many are 1975-76 (8), 1982-83 (7), 1985-86 (7) and 1984-85 (6).

VASILEVSKIY, MacKINNON REACH MILESTONES IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES

A pair of League veterans reached milestone marks in victories as Andrei Vasilevskiy (33 saves) earned his 250th career win and Nathan MacKinnon (0-1—1) collected his 700th career point. More notes from the NHL’s 11-game slate can be found here

* Vasilevskiy (250-113-25 in 399 GP), who backstopped the Lightning to their 10th straight victory at AMALIE Arena, is one of three goaltenders with 250 wins since making his NHL debut in 2014-15 (also Sergei Bobrovsky: 253 & Frederik Andersen: 250). The 2018-19 Vezina Trophy winner, 2021 Conn Smythe Trophy winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion required the second-fewest games in NHL history to reach the mark behind only Ken Dryden (381 GP).

* MacKinnon (255-445—700) assisted on Colorado’s opening goal to hit 700 career points and became the sixth player in Avalanche/Nordiques history to reach the milestone, joining Joe Sakic (1,641), Peter Stastny (1,048), Michel Goulet (946), Milan Hejduk (805) and Peter Forsberg (755).

McDAVID CAPS TNT DOUBLEHEADER WITH PURSUIT OF 50TH ASSIST IN 2022-23

The Rangers (26-14-7, 59 points) and Maple Leafs (29-11-8, 66 points) will open the night with Toronto looking to become the fifth team to 30 wins this season, while Connor McDavid (40-48—88 in 48 GP) and the Oilers (27-18-3, 57 points) cap the doubleheader on TNT as the club eyes their seventh straight win

* McDavid, who enters the contest with the NHL’s longest active point streak (8-8—16 in 10 GP), has only been held off the score sheet five times in 2022-23 and looks to collect his 50th assist of the season in fewer than 50 games for the second time in his career following 2020-21 (44 GP).

* The Oilers captain’s 40 goals are three more than the next closest skater (David Pastrnak: 37 in 47 GP) and should he collect two helpers against the Blue Jackets, he would become the eighth different player in NHL history with 40 goals and 50 assists prior to his 50th game. Mario Lemieux (48-69—117 in 49 GP) and Jaromir Jagr (41-56—97 in 49 GP) both last did so with the Penguins in 1995-96.

ICYMI: Derek Ryan has found the score sheet in two of Edmonton’s past three games and is the most recent feature in the “Not One Path” series – highlighting unconventional paths to the NHL.

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs (14-33) at Los Angeles Lakers (22-26)

0

The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to give their newest addition a spin when they play host to the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.

Forward Rui Hachimura was acquired from the Washington Wizards on Monday and was on the bench but not active Tuesday for the Lakers’ 133-115 defeat against the Los Angeles Clippers.

There would be no time like the present to debut Hachimura, who would give the Lakers fresh legs against the Spurs on the second night of a back-to-back situation for the hosts.

The 6-foot-8, 230-pound Hachimura will give the Lakers size that will be needed — even when the 6-10 Anthony Davis returns to the court. Davis has been out the past 20 games, although he could be ready to return from a stress injury to his right foot suffered against San Antonio.

At 24, Hachimura is young enough — and nimble enough — to fit into the Lakers’ more up-tempo style with guards Russell Westbrook and Dennis Schroder. LeBron James has been leading that charge for Los Angeles, scoring 46 points Tuesday while moving within 177 points of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time NBA scoring record.

Hachimura should bring plenty of confidence into his Lakers debut. He has averaged just 13 points per game this season, but he is coming off a career-best 30-point effort in the Wizards’ victory over the Orlando Magic on Saturday.

In addition to Davis, the Lakers are close to welcoming back Austin Reaves (hamstring) and Lonnie Walker IV (knee), who have been out for the last three weeks.

The Spurs’ defense took another blow Monday in a 147-127 road loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, a team the Lakers defeated by nine points on Sunday.

San Antonio has given up an average of 133 points over their last seven defeats, with the outlier in that stretch a 106-98 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Jan. 17.

Keldon Johnson had 20 points in an all-around scoring effort for the Spurs, who had eight players in double figures. San Antonio shot 52.2 percent, but that was negated by the Trail Blazers’ 59.8 percent effort.

Johnson averages a team-best 21.5 points per game and Jakob Poeltl grabs 9.2 rebounds, but the Spurs have won just five times in 21 road games.

The Lakers will look to sweep the season series between the teams after Los Angeles won by 31 at home on Nov. 20 then took back-to-back games at San Antonio on Nov. 25 and 26, scoring 143 points in the second victory.
