Blue Bombers re-sign receiver Nic Demski to three-year extension

0

WINNIPEG, MB., –  The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce today the club has re-signed receiver Nic Demski to a three-year contract extension, keeping him in Blue and Gold through 2025.

A born-and-bred Winnipegger and product of the University of Manitoba, Demski (5-11, 216) will be entering his fifth season with the Blue Bombers in 2023 after beginning his Canadian Football League career in 2015 as a first-round draft pick with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

He first signed with Winnipeg as a free agent in 2018 and is coming off a 2022 season in which he set career bests despite missing five games. Demski finished ’22 with 64 receptions for 772 yards and 10 touchdowns – all the best numbers in his career – and in the process was named the Blue Bombers Most Outstanding Canadian Player for a second straight season and was also selected to the West Division All-Star Team.

In his four seasons with the Blue Bombers, Demski has 215 receptions for 2,523 yards and 20 touchdowns, while adding 633 yards and four more scores along the ground.

Blue Bombers re-sign defensive back Alden Darby

0

WINNIPEG, MB., – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has agreed to terms with American defensive back Alden Darby, Jr. on a one-year contract extension.

He was scheduled to become a free agent on February 14th.

Darby, Jr. (5-11, 194, Arizona State; born: June 22, 1992, in Long Beach, CA) returns in 2023 for what will be his third stint with the Blue Bombers.
Darby Jr. is a veteran of 66 regular season games in the CFL, including 43 with the Toronto Argonauts, 10 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and 13 and counting with the Blue Bombers.

Winnipeg has twice traded for Darby, Jr. in two years, most recently acquiring him from the Tiger-Cats at the trade deadline last October. He was first acquired by the Bombers in a trade with Toronto in July of 2021 and found a place in the Blue Bombers starting defence while being named a West Division All-Star that year.

He had 34 tackles, one tackle for a loss and a pass knockdown in nine regular season starts in 2021, before adding two tackles and a sack in the Western Final win over Saskatchewan and six tackles, a pass knockdown and an interception in the Grey Cup victory over Hamilton.

Darby, Jr. made two regular season starts for the Blue Bombers last year after the trade and had six tackles before adding four more tackles and a sack in the playoff run.
Darby, Jr. first signed with the Argos in July of 2017 and appeared in 43 games over three years with Toronto, finishing with 137 tackles, one sack and eight interceptions. He was a member of the 2017 Grey Cup champion Argonauts, although he was on the injured list and did not play in the game.

Darby, Jr. played his college ball at Arizona State and had 10 interceptions during his days with the Sun Devils. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2014 and had NFL looks with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts.

* Four Wild Card spots, two competitive races in both the Eastern and Western Conference – dive into the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoff race as teams return to action.

* Jack and Quinn Hughes are set for the sixth all-time head-to-head as the Devils (32-13-4, 68 points) and Canucks (20-26-3, 43 points) clash when the NHL’s regular-season schedule resumes following All-Star Weekend.

* Jamie Benn (348-465—813 in 999 GP) is set to become the second player in Stars/North Stars history to skate in 1,000 games when Dallas’ captain celebrates the milestone night Monday. Mike Modano (1,459 GP) is currently the only player to do so.

WHERE WE STAND: THE RACE TO THE 2023 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
The NHL’s 2022-23 regular season resumes following a pause from Feb. 2-5 for the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend, with a shift in focus toward the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Four teams currently hold a playoff position after failing to do so in 2022 (NJD, WPG, VGK & SEA).

* The Bruins (39-7-5, 83 points), who occupy first place in the League standings, will look to claim the fourth Presidents’ Trophy in franchise history (2020, 2014 & 1990). Boston has held top spot in the NHL standings for 95 days this season and can establish the sixth instance in NHL history of a club holding the No. 1 position for at least 162 days should they remain in first through the duration of 2022-23.

* Elsewhere in the Atlantic Division, the Sabres (26-20-4, 56 points) – a club looking for their first playoff berth since 2010-11 – and Panthers (24-22-6, 54 points) currently sit one and three points behind the Penguins for the final Eastern Conference Wild Card spot, respectively. Two teams who would potentially face Boston in the First Round of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

* While the Hurricanes (34-9-8, 76 points) have held a share of the Metropolitan Division lead since Dec. 20, 2022, the Devils (32-13-4, 68 points) and Rangers (27-14-8, 62 points) – both in action Monday – currently hold second and third place, respectively. The two clubs, who are trending towards their first Stanley Cup Playoffs meeting in over a decade, both aim to earn a win in their 50th game of 2022-23, with New Jersey looking to record its second-most victories through as many contests in a season in franchise history behind only 2009-10 (34).

* The Islanders (25-22-5, 55 points), who are engaged in a close race for a Wild Card position, will also take to the ice when they visit the Flyers (21-21-9, 51 points); New York was 17 points outside of the playoff picture at this time last season.

* The first and second slot in the Central Division includes teams separated by just one point, with Dallas (28-13-10, 66 points) and Winnipeg (32-19-1, 65 points) also occupying the first two seeds in the Western Conference. The Stars can finish atop their division for the first time since 2015-16 and should they conclude the campaign in the conference’s first-place seed it would mark the first time since 2002-03. Meanwhile, the Jets have yet to conclude a season No. 1 in the division since the club re-located to Winnipeg – last achieving the feat in 2006-07 in Atlanta – and is in pursuit of their first-ever conference title.

* Two of the top three teams in the Pacific Division failed to participate in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, highlighted by the top-seeded Kraken (29-15-5, 63 points) who hold four games in hand over the second-place Kings (28-18-7, 63 points). Seattle, which has already surpassed its point total from 2021-22, can become the fourth expansion team since 1967-68 to win a division title within its first two seasons, joining the 2017-18 Golden Knights (Pacific Division), 1967-68 Flyers (West Division) and 1968-69 Blues (West Division). Of note, Philadelphia and St. Louis were part of the NHL’s all-expansion division from 1967-68 to 1973-74.

* The Western Conference features a tightly contested Wild Card race separated by six points and includes two teams from each division. Calgary will have the opportunity to move back into the Second Wild Card position for the first time since Jan. 27 when the Flames kick off a four-game road swing at Madison Square Garden.

HUGHES BROTHERS READY HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING AS SCHEDULE RESUMES
Jack Hughes (33-31—64 in 49 GP) and the Devils (32-13-4, 68 points) welcome Quinn Hughes (5-40—45 in 45 GP) and the Canucks (20-26-3, 43 points) to Prudential Center as the NHL’s regular-season schedule resumes following All-Star Weekend.

* Jack enters his 50th game of the 2022-23 season on an eight-game point streak – a stretch that also includes multiple points in each of his past four contests dating to Jan. 22 (4-4—8 in 4 GP). Hughes, tied for the most goals (13) and points (23) among all players since Jan. 1, can become the third player in franchise history with five consecutive multi-point outings joining Scott Gomez (5 GP in 2005-06) and Kirk Muller (5 GP in 1987-88).

* Quinn sits tied for the fourth-most points among all defensemen since Jan. 1 (4-11—15 in 13 GP), thanks in part to five multi-point games and two outings with two or more assists. He sits one multi-assist performance shy of second double-digit total in a single season (also 11 in 2021-22) and five away from the most by a Canucks defenseman in a single campaign.

BENN SET TO CELEBRATE 1,000TH CAREER GAME
Stars captain Jamie Benn (348-465—813 in 999 GP) is expected to skate in his 1,000th career game when his Central Division-leading Stars (28-13-10, 66 points) host the Ducks (16-29-5, 37 points) at American Airlines Center.

* Benn (19-25—44 in 51 GP), who has already passed his 82-game goal total from 2021-22 (18-28—46) and sits one tally away from his 10th 20-goal campaign with Stars, is set to join a franchise icon with his milestone contest.

NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (36-17) at Portland Trail Blazers (26-27)

0

Big-time stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard will both be riding impressive hot streaks when they share the court on Monday night.

Antetokounmpo’s team also is the hottest in the NBA, and he will seek to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to their eighth straight victory when they visit the Portland Trail Blazers.

Antetokounmpo has flashed his two-time NBA MVP form during the winning streak, recording a double-double in each game while posting averages of 39.4 points, 14.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists. He has outputs of 54 and 50 points and posted a triple-double with 35 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists in Saturday’s 123-115 home victory over the Miami Heat.

The triple-double was Antetokounmpo’s third of the season and 32nd of his career.

The recent hot stretch has allowed the Bucks to move within one game of the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Celtics.

Antetokounmpo scored 37 points when Milwaukee notched a 119-111 home victory over Portland on Nov. 21 for its 11th win in the past 13 games in the series. Lillard sat out that contest with a calf injury.

Lillard is fully healthy now and has scored at least 40 points four times over the past seven games, including a season-high 60 against the Utah Jazz on Jan. 25.

The Trail Blazers are 5-2 during that span despite dropping a 129-121 decision to the Chicago Bulls on Saturday. Lillard scored 40 points during the setback.

Lillard is averaging 40 points and has made 36 3-pointers during the seven-game stretch.

Portland appeared tired in the second half of the loss to the Bulls, a contest in which they squandered a 17-point advantage. The Trail Blazers had recovered from a 20-point deficit one night earlier while rallying for a 124-116 win over the Washington Wizards.

Portland coach Chauncey Billups could see it, too. He felt his squad simply ran out of gas.

The Trail Blazers entered Sunday in 11th place in the Western Conference with a key stretch arriving. Monday’s meeting is the first of five straight home games entering the All-Star break and among the opponents are the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers.

The Bucks will be the biggest test of the group with Antetokounmpo playing at a supreme level and sidekick Khris Middleton coming off a season-high, 24-point outing against the Heat.

Middleton has been limited to 14 games this season due to knee, wrist and ankle injuries. But he is averaging 19.3 points over the past three games while playing just 20 minutes in each contest.

Portland will be without center Jusuf Nurkic (calf) for the third straight game. He won’t return until after the All-Star break.

NBA Preview: Sacramento Kings (29-23) at Houston Rockets (13-40)

0

Prior to a surprising 18-point home loss to the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 25 that preceded their current seven-game road trip, the Sacramento Kings claimed status as darlings of the NBA.

The Kings had ascended to first place in the Pacific Division behind the play of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, a pair of expected All-Stars playing the best basketball of their careers. Sacramento seemed assured of ending a postseason drought that stretches back 16 years on the back of the highest-scoring offense in the NBA and a style of play that earned countless raves.

On Sunday, with Fox sidelined for a second consecutive game due to personal reasons, the Kings suffered their worst loss of the season, 136-104, to a New Orleans Pelicans team missing a trio of starters. The Kings were lethargic from the opening tip and have struggled mightily against opponents playing the second game of a back-to-back.

On Monday, Sacramento will complete its own back-to-back when it plays the first of consecutive games in Houston against the Rockets, with the finale of the four-game season series set for Wednesday. Sacramento swept a pair of games against the Rockets at home on Jan. 11 and Jan. 13.

The Kings fell to 2-3 on their roadie and, suddenly, things don’t look quite as rosy.

For every incremental step forward, the Rockets follow with performances that cement their standing as the worst team in the NBA. After posting consecutive victories for the first time since mid-December with wins over the Detroit Pistons and Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston followed by blowing a double-digit lead at home against the Raptors on Friday before producing a non-competitive effort on the road against the Thunder in a 153-121 loss on Saturday.

The Rockets were playing for the third time in four days against the Thunder, and since they were in the second game of a back-to-back, were without Eric Gordon and Jae’Sean Tate in addition to Kevin Porter Jr., who missed his 12th consecutive game with a lingering toe injury.

Still, the Rockets had shown flashes of determined effort while in the midst of injury adversity. That they relented so completely to the obstacles they faced in Oklahoma City was jarring.

NBA preview: Cleveland Cavaliers (33-22) at Washington Wizards (24-28)

0

Frustration is setting in for the Washington Wizards, who carry a two-game skid into Monday’s matchup against the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Wizards have lost last two games in agonizing fashion. One night after blowing a 20-point lead in a 124-116 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, Washington relinquished a 23-point lead in a 125-123 loss to the short-handed Brooklyn Nets on Saturday.

The Wizards are the first NBA team in the last 25 seasons to lose on consecutive days after being up by 20 or more points in each.

Saturday’s loss was even more perplexing because Brooklyn played without injured starters Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and Ben Simmons.

Washington will look to regroup against Cleveland, which is seeking its first three-game winning streak since early January. The Cavaliers, who have won four of their last six games, are playing the second game of a back-to-back after beating the Indiana Pacers 122-103 on Sunday.

All of Cleveland’s starters – Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Isaac Okoro, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen – scored in double figures in the victory.

Okoro had a season-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including three 3-pointers. The third-year pro has averaged 16 points over the past two games.

Cleveland has won its last two meetings against Washington, including a 117-107 overtime victory on Oct. 23.

Reserve point guard Ricky Rubio missed the early-season contest due to a left knee injury, but he’s now serving a key role on the Cavaliers’ second unit.

Rubio, who has missed a total of 44 games this season while recovering from ACL surgery, tallied seven points and nine assists in Sunday’s win over Indiana.

Cleveland could be facing a short-handed Washington team if star Bradley Beal is unable to play. Beal was held out of Saturday’s loss to Brooklyn due to left foot soreness and is listed as questionable for Monday’s contest.

Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma has already been ruled out for the matchup with a sprained left ankle. Kuzma, averaging 21.3 points and 7.6 rebounds, played just 11 minutes against Brooklyn before leaving in the second quarter.

Kuzma’s absence will likely result in more playing time for third-year pro Deni Avdija, who is averaging 8.8 points and 6.2 rebounds over his last five games.

Avdija is eager to get back on the floor following the past two losses. The 6-foot-9 forward was one of the last players to leave the court after Saturday’s loss to Brooklyn.

NBA Preview: Oklahoma City Thunder (25-27) at Golden State Warriors (27-26)

0

The Golden State Warriors open a second stretch this season without All-Star guard Stephen Curry when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night at San Francisco.

Curry left Saturday’s 119-113 home win over the Dallas Mavericks after clashing knees with McKinley Wright IV late in the third quarter while defending in the key.

The two-time MVP limped immediately to the bench, then to the locker room, where X-rays were negative.

An MRI on Sunday revealed Curry has partially torn tibiofibular ligaments in his left knee, according to multiple reports, and is expected to be out through next week’s All-Star break.

The Warriors’ Draymond Green noted after Saturday’s game that he talked to Curry and was optimistic his teammate would be back soon.

Curry missed 11 games bridging December and January with a dislocated left shoulder. The Warriors went 6-5 in a home-heavy portion of the schedule that time.

This time, Golden State will be off for eight days in the middle of February because of the All-Star break, with five games remaining until then. The Warriors will play three of those five at home, with road games at Portland and Los Angeles (Clippers).

Golden State got a reminder of what playing without Curry can be like when it was outscored 35-21 while its leader was off the floor for the final 14 minutes against the Mavericks. Curry had already contributed 21 points to what was then a 98-78 lead.

The Warriors’ matchup with the Thunder will be the second in eight days between the teams. Curry had 38 points and 12 assists in a 128-120 win at Oklahoma City last Monday.

The Thunder have played just twice since, splitting a home-and-home series with the Houston Rockets. They won the rematch Saturday night at home, exploding for a season-best 153 points in a 32-point romp.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a candidate to replace Curry in the All-Star Game starting lineup, paced the win with 42 points. He has 30 or more points in six of his last seven games, including 31 against the Warriors last week.

The game at San Francisco will provide a homecoming of sorts for Oklahoma City rookie Jalen Williams, a 2022 first-round pick after a stellar three-year career at nearby Santa Clara. The Thunder will be playing at Golden State for the first time this season.

The Thunder already played at Sacramento, and one night before their Jan. 20 visit, Williams returned to Santa Clara to watch his Broncos take on BYU. He then had 13 points in a loss to the Kings the next night.

Williams will join Gilgeous-Alexander at the All-Star Game festivities in Salt Lake City next week. Williams and Thunder teammate Josh Giddey were selected to play in the Rising Stars game next Friday night.
