MBB-FBS: Nevada Wolfpack (18-6) at New Mexico Lobos (19-4)

The University of Nevada Men’s Basketball team will put their current two-game winning streak on the line Tuesday evening, as they will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico to face New Mexico in a rematch after the Pack defeated the Lobos in a double overtime thriller two weeks ago.

Nevada owns a perfect record of 7-0 against New Mexico under the leadership of Head Coach Steve Alford, as he is yet to lose against his former team.

Nevada earned back-to-back victories over #22 San Diego State and Air Force this past week, as they will look to carry the momentum over into Tuesday’s road contest.

The Pack earned a 97-74 victory over the Lobos in the first meeting of the regular season between the two squads on January 23.

Will Baker had one of the best performances of his career in the first matchup, scoring a career-high 28 points on 12-17 shooting from the field, while also pulling down five rebounds.

Jarod Lucas had a strong performance on the offensive end of the floor in the first contest against New Mexico, scoring 22 points, while knocking down three shots from behind the arc.

Kenan Blackshear also managed to reach double figures in scoring against the Lobos earlier this season, scoring 20 points on 8-13 shooting from the field and 4-5 at the free throw line. Blackshear had a stellar all-around game, as the senior guard also dished out four assists and tallied five steals.

Freshman forward Darrion Williams had a sensational outing in the first victory over New Mexico, recording the first double-double of his career by scoring 13 points and pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds. Williams also tallied three blocks and one steal in the game.

Junior forward Tre Coleman set a new career-high by dishing out nine assists in the first tilt with the Lobos. Coleman also scored seven points, pulled down four rebounds, and recorded three steals and three blocks apiece.

Nevada enters Tuesday night’s showdown coming off of a dominant victory over Air Force, in which they outscored the Falcons 41-24 in the second half, propelling the Pack to a 72-52 victory.

Jarod Lucas was exceptional throughout the game, scoring 19 points on 5-11 shooting from the field, 3-7 from behind the arc, and 6-6 at the free throw line, in addition to pulling down five rebounds. Lucas did the majority of his work over the final 20 minutes, scoring 14 points on 4-6 shooting from the field, 2-4 from behind the arc, and 4-4 at the free throw line in the second period alone. The senior guard finished the contest with a plus/minus of +18 in 32 minutes of action.

Lucas was named the Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday morning for his outstanding play in Nevada’s wins over Air Force and #22 San Diego State last week.

Lucas has scored in double figures in an incredible 22 straight contests and in 23 of 24 games this season. He ranks in the top-three of the Mountain West in a multitude of offensive categories this season. Lucas is currently second in the conference in total points scored (418 points), second in free throw percentage (85.2%), second in minutes per game (34.7 MPG), tied for second in made 3-pointers (63), third in points per game (17.4 PPG), and third in 3-point field goal percentage (38.4%), as he has been lethal on the offensive end of the court all year.

Will Baker had another impressive showing in the Pack’s victory over Air Force, scoring 17 points on a highly efficient 8-10 shooting from the field, in addition to pulling down a game-high eight rebounds. He has now led Nevada in rebounding in each of the Pack’s past three games.

Baker currently ranks third in the Mountain West in field goal percentage (56.0%), fourth in free throw percentage (84.4%), 15th in points per game (13.5 PPG), and 16th in rebounds per game (5.3 RPG).

Kenan Blackshear turned in another strong all-around showing for the Pack against Air Force, scoring 10 points, while pulling down four rebounds and tallying four assists. He logged 36 minutes of playing time and finished the contest with a game-high plus/minus of +23.

Blackshear has scored in double figures in 15 straight games, and in 21 of 24 contests this season. The senior guard has also dished out at least three assists in all but two games for the Pack.

Blackshear ranks in the top-15 of the Mountain West in an abundance of statistical categories this year. He is second in the league in both total assists (113) and assists per game (4.7 APG), while ranking fourth in steals per game (1.7 SPG), eighth in points per game (14.8 PPG), eighth in field goal percentage (45.5%), eighth in free throw percentage (79.7%), and ninth in minutes per game (32.8 MPG).

Darrion Williams had another stat-stuffing night against Air Force, as the freshman scored five points, pulled down six rebounds, and dished out a game-high and new career-high seven assists in the contest. Williams also tallied one steal, and he finished the game with a stellar plus/minus of +22.

Williams continues to lead Nevada in rebounding, and he ranks sixth overall in the Mountain West in rebounds per game (7.2 RPG). Williams also ranks ninth in the league in steals per game, as the freshman is recording 1.5 steals per contest.

After recording seven blocks over Nevada’s past three games, Tre Coleman has moved into the top-10 of the Mountain West in blocks per game, as the junior forward, known for his sensational defense is now recording 0.92 blocks per contest.

As a team, Nevada continues to rank at the top of the country in free throw shooting. Nevada is fifth in the nation in free throw percentage (79.4%), while ranking sixth in the country in made free throws and 22nd in attempts.

The Pack had an exceptional defensive outing against the Falcons, limiting Air Force to just 52 points on 42.2 percent shooting from the field. Nevada ranks in the top-five of the Mountain West in an abundance of defensive statistical categories. The Pack enters

Tuesday’s game ranked third in opponent field goal percentage (41.6%), third in turnovers forced (314), fourth in steals per game (6.2), fourth in defensive rebounding (26.4 per game), fifth in opponent 3-point field goal percentage (33.6%), and fifth in opponent points per game (66.1 PPG).

The Pack also owns one of the most efficient offenses in the conference, as they currently rank first in least number of turnovers this season, as they have done a phenomenal job of limiting turnovers throughout the season.

Nevada faces one of its most difficult challenges yet on Tuesday, as they will take a New Mexico team that owns the highest scoring offense in the conference, while also maintaining a stingy defense that forces a lot of turnovers in arguably one of the most hostile environments in the country.

Scouting New Mexico

New Mexico owns an impressive record of 19-4 overall this season, including a mark of 6-4 in Mountain West play.

The Lobos rank first in the conference in scoring, as their fast-paced offense is averaging 82.0 points per game this season.

The Lobos have been highly efficient on offense, as they also rank first in the Mountain West in field goal percentage, holding a clip of 49.1 percent shooting from the field from the field this season.

New Mexico’s defense has been nearly as impressive as their offense, as they rank fourth in the league in both opponent field goal percentage (42.3%) and opponent 3-point field goal percentage (30.3%). The Lobos are also second in the conference in blocks per game (4.2 BPG) and third in steals per contest (7.1 SPG).

New Mexico has been exceptional on the glass this season, as they rank first in the Mountain West in rebounding (38.7 RPG) and second in rebounding margin (+4.9).

Individually, New Mexico is led by one of the best backcourt duos in the country in Jamal Mashburn Jr. and Jaelen House.

Mashburn Jr. leads the Mountain West in scoring, pouring in 19.4 points per game on 44.9 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc. He scored a game-high 33 points in the first contest between Nevada and New Mexico.

House has been equally as impressive as Mashburn this season, as he ranks fourth in the league in scoring at 17.3 points per game on 46.0 percent shooting from the field and 39.0 percent shooting from behind the arc. House also leads the team and ranks third in the conference in assists, averaging 4.7 per game. He is known as a feisty defender, and he leads the Mountain West and ranks second in the nation in steals per game, recording 2.8 per contest.

Morris Udeze has been a strong piece in the frontcourt for the Lobos, as he leads the team and the Mountain West in rebounding, averaging 8.7 boards per game. Udeze is also putting up 15.7 points per game on 59.0 percent shooting from the field.

The trio of Mashburn, House, and Udeze account for 63.9 percent of New Mexico’s total offense this season.

As strong as the Lobos have been on offense, they have struggled shooting from behind the arc at times, and they can be susceptible to turning the ball over, as they rank seventh in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (35.0%), and fifth in most turnovers this season (279 turnovers).

Nevada will seek to slow down the pace of the game, limit the production of New Mexico’s big three, and have one of their best defensive outings of the season in order to secure the massive road win over the Lobos.

Series History

Nevada and New Mexico have faced off 20 times throughout history, with the Pack owning a 13-7 advantage in the all-time series. Nevada is currently on an eight-game winning streak over the Lobos.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
• Tonight’s game against the Islanders is the first of five consecutive games the Kraken will play on the road. The team’s five-game road trip will conclude on Feb. 14 in Winnipeg.

• Tonight’s matchup is the final of two games Seattle will play against the Islanders this season, having previously defeated them 4-1 on New Year’s Day in Seattle.

• In three meetings with New York since the start of the 2021-22 season, the Kraken have never allowed a power-play goal, going a perfect four-for-four on the penalty kill. The Islanders are one of four teams (Columbus, Montreal, New Jersey) that the Kraken are perfect on the penalty kill against.

• Since the start of the New Year, the Kraken are leading the league in wins (11, tied), points (23, tied) and goals scored (57). Seattle (4.00) and Edmonton (4.25) are the only two teams in the league to be averaging more than four goals per game since Jan. 1.

• Will Borgen is expected to play in his 100th NHL game tonight against the Islanders. Borgen was originally selected by Buffalo in the fourth round (92nd overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft and has played in 14 games for the Sabres and in 85 for the Kraken.

• Eeli Tolvanen enters tonight’s matchup with the Islanders having scored a goal in each of the Kraken’s last three games. If he were to score tonight, it would extend his goal-scoring streak to four games, which would match his career high that he set from Dec. 4 to 10, 2021.

• Ryan Donato has recorded five points (four goals, one assist) in his last five games.

• Jared McCann has eight points (four goals, four assists) in his last eight games played.

• Oliver Bjorkstrand has four points (two goals, two assists) in his last four games.

KILLING IT
• The Kraken have not allowed a power-play goal for a franchise-record seven consecutive games, going a perfect 17-for-17 during that span. The team’s seven-game penalty killing streak is tied for the third-longest such streak this season according to NHL Stats.

• If they were to remain perfect on the penalty kill tonight, the Kraken would become the third team this season to go eight consecutive games without allowing a power-play goal according to NHL Stats, joining the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins.

• Entering play Monday, the Kraken were the only team in the NHL to remain perfect on the penalty kill since Jan. 16, the start of the team’s streak.

• Adam Larsson is leading all Seattle skaters in both total penalty kill time (144:59) and penalty kill time per game (2:58) this season.

• Among defensemen that have played at least 70 minutes on the penalty kill this season, Will Borgen was ranked ninth in the NHL with 4.67 power-play goals against per 60 entering play Monday.

• Entering play Monday, the Kraken ranked in the top five in the NHL this season in road wins (16, fourth), points (34, tied fourth), regulation wins (15, tied second) and points percentage (.739, third). Seattle is one of only five teams this season to have a points percentage of .700 or better on the road this year.

TEAM NOTES
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP
Tonight, the New York Islanders look to earn a split in their two-game season series against the Seattle Kraken, as the Islanders host Seattle in the final matchup between the two clubs this season. The last time these teams met was on January 1, 2023, at Climate Pledge Arena. It is just the second meeting in history between the Islanders and Kraken at UBS Arena, and the first since over a year ago on February 2, 2022. The Islanders enter tonight’s matchup with three straight wins, their first set of three consecutive victories since December 23-29, 2022.

PENALTY KILL
The Islanders killed each of the three penalties they faced last night in Philadelphia, and enter tonight’s matchup having killed 31 of their last 34. The Islanders also have a 91.2% success rate on the penalty kill on home ice, leading the NHL. Since December 2, they have allowed just three power play goals in 36 times shorthanded at UBS Arena.

BACK-TO-BACK
The Islanders will cap off their eleventh back-to-back series of the season tonight, looking to improve to 7-3-1 on the back-end of back-to-back games. They have collected points in four of their last five back-ends. The Islanders also ended the month of January in a back-to-back, as they earned victories on January 27 against Detroit, and January 28 against Vegas. It was the fourth time this season they have won consecutive games in consecutive nights, and the first time since November 25 and 26, against Columbus and Philadelphia. It was also the first time that the Islanders swept a back-to-back series in which they scored two goals or fewer in each game for the first time since December 30-31, 2002, vs. Florida and in Buffalo.

NHL Morning Skate – Feb. 7, 2023

0

* After being named MVP at the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star GameMatthew Tkachuk skated to a five-point performance to join Mario Lemieux on a unique list and surpass the 70-point mark on the season in the process.

* The Devils captured their eighth overtime win of 2022-23 – one shy of the most in a campaign in franchise history – with the help of Jack Hughes and Dougie Hamilton who assisted on the overtime tally.

Connor McDavid, who is set to return from the All-Star break, can extend his point streak to 13 games when the Oilers visit the Red Wings in a contest carried by HULU, ESPN+ and Sportsnet.

TKACHUK FOLLOWS UP ALL-STAR MVP HONORS WITH FIVE-POINT PERFORMANCE
Matthew Tkachuk (2-3—5) factored on five of the Panthers’ seven goals for his third career five-point outing to help Florida (25-22-6, 56 points) move within one point of idle Pittsburgh (24-16-9, 57 points) for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. With the victory, Paul Maurice became the sixth head coach in NHL history to record 800 NHL wins.

* Tkachuk (27-44—71 in 50 GP) surpassed 70 points while skating in his 50th game and matched Jonathan Huberdeau (50 GP in 2021-22) for the fewest contests by a Panthers player to reach the mark in a campaign. Last season, it took Tkachuk 60 games to hit the mark – he went on to record a career-high 42-62—104 (82 GP).

* Tkachuk, who fell one point shy of the most by a Panthers player in a single game, surpassed Mike Hoffman (36-34—70 in 2018-19) for the second-most points by a Florida player in their first season with the club. He now trails only Sam Reinhart (33-49—82 in 2021-22).

Brandon Montour collected an assist to extend his franchise-record point streak to 10 games (3-7—10 in 10 GP) and join Josh Morrissey (11 GP) and Erik Karlsson (14 GP) as the third defenseman this season with a double-digit run. The last campaign to feature more blueliners with a point streak of 10-plus contests was 1992-93 (7).

TRIO HELPS DEVILS DOWN CANUCKS WITH ANOTHER OT VICTORY
The trio of Jack Hughes (2-1—3), Dougie Hamilton (0-3—3) and Vitek Vanecek (26 saves) each played a pivotal part for the Devils (33-13-4, 70 points), who edged the Canucks in their 50th game of 2022-23. Eight of New Jersey’s 33 wins this season have come in overtime – one shy of the most in a single campaign in franchise history (9 in 2015-16 & 2008-09).

* Hughes (35-32—67 in 50 GP), with multiple points in five straight games, returned from the 2023 NHL All-Star Weekend and not only matched the longest stretch of multi-point contests in franchise history but moved into third place in the NHL’s Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy race behind Connor McDavid (41) and David Pastrnak (38).

* Hamilton, who factored on one of three Devils goals in a span of 50 seconds, has collected 3-8—11 through his active five-game point streak and has notched 13-36—49 (50 GP) in 2022-23. His 49 points eclipsed Scott Stevens (11-35—46 in 1993-94) for the most by a Devils/Rockies/Scouts defenseman through 50 contests in a season and his 36 assists also surpassed Stevens and Bruce Driver (6-35—41 in 1989-90) for the highest by a blueliner in that scenario.

* The Devils acquired Vanecek from the Capitals on July 8 in exchange for a second- and third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. His 10th straight victory improved his 2022-23 record to 22-5-2, besting 2020-21 (21-10-4) for his most wins in a single season.

PANARIN POSTS MULTI-POINT PERFORMANCE, JOINS RANGERS LEGENDS
Fresh off skating in 2023 Honda NHL All-Star WeekendArtemi Panarin (0-2—2) factored on two of his team’s five goals and Adam Fox picked up an assist as the Rangers rallied from a one-goal deficit to win in overtime at Madison Square Garden.

* Panarin boosted his career totals with New York to 83-218—301 (236 GP). He required the fewest games in franchise history to reach the 300-point mark, surpassing Mark Messier (94-206—300 in 249 GP).

* Panarin became the first player to record 40-plus assists in each of his first four seasons with the Rangers. Overall, he is the sixth player in franchise history to record four or more consecutive campaigns with 40 assists, joining Andy Bathgate (9x from 1955-56 to 1963-64), Rod Gilbert (6x from 1971-72 to 1976-77), Jean Ratelle (6x from 1967-68 to 1972-73), Brian Leetch (4x from 1988-89 to 1991-92) and Brad Park (4x from 1971-72 to 1974-75).

MAKAR SET FOR HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING WITH CHILDHOOD IDOL
Cale Makar (13-32—45 in 44 GP) and Sidney Crosby (24-36—60 in 49 GP) each represented their respective divisions during the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend in South Florida, but will go head-to-head Tuesday when the Avalanche (27-18-3, 57 points) travel to Pittsburgh to clash with the Penguins (24-16-9, 57 points) in a matchup of Wild Card hopefuls.

* Makar grew up idolizing the Penguins star, which included a life-size poster hanging on the wall of his family’s laundry room. “It’s what we used to measure our heights. We’d stand next to it and mark the lines on him,” the Avalanche defenseman said in an ESPN article in Dec. 2021.
