WHATS ON TAP?
The Panthers continue its weekend at home as the team will play host to the Northern Kentucky Norse on Sunday afternoon with tipoff slated for 12 pm from the Klotsche Center.

LAST TIME OUT
For the third consecutive game a member of the Milwaukee Panther women’s basketball team had a career-high in points as this time it was Jada Donaldson to score 16 to help propel the Panthers to a 62-57 win over Detroit Mercy on Sunday afternoon.

Donaldson’s point total comes off the heels of Kendall Nead scoring 24 at Oakland on February 3; and Emma Wittmershaus scoring a career-best 25 points against IUPUI on January 28.

Milwaukee shot 42.6 percent from the field for the game including a game-high 47.4 percent in the third quarter as the Panthers erased a 26-25 halftime deficit and turned it into a 48-45 lead following the third quarter.

Nead got the scoring started in the third quarter to put the Panthers up by one. The Titans regained the lead before Donaldson nailed a three-pointer off a pass by Angie Cera to give MKE a two-point advantage. The lead exchanged hands 13 times in the game including seven times in the third quarter, before Donaldson knocked down a jumper with 5:18 to go in the third to put the Panthers up for good.

Kamy Peppler connected on a three-pointer to give Milwaukee some breathing room and ultimately it was Peppler to give the Panthers their largest lead of the game to that point at 43-36 with 3:20 left in the third. Detroit closed the gap late in the period to make it a three-point game heading into the final period.

In the fourth, Milwaukee got a jumper by Anna Lutz to go up by five, before Nead sank a jumper and Megan Walstad added a free throw. Cera gave Milwaukee a nine-point advantage at 55-46 but the Titans refused to go away, shrinking the Panther lead to two at 57-55 with 4:12 to go in the game.

Cera had a free throw and Nead picked up a layup to make it a two-possession game. Detroit had some late chances but were unable to convert as the Panthers held on for the five-point victory.

Cera finished the game with 14 points and three assists, while Walstad had eight points and nine rebounds with the team’s lone block on the day. Nead had eight points of her own and pulled down five rebounds with one steal.

Grace Crowley had a career-best nine rebounds and had two assists and four points, while Peppler ended the game with eight points to go along with a team-best two steals and four assists.

CLIMBING THE BOARD…BOARD
With nine rebounds in back-to-back games in Michigan, Megan Walstad has now climbed into fourth place on the all-time rebound list in Milwaukee history with 830. Walstad passed Jenny Lindner in Sunday’s win over Detroit, as Lindner had 826 for her career. Next on the list is Steph Kostowicz, who finished her career with 898 career rebounds.

Walstad also has 238 offensive rebounds, placing her eight on the offensive rebound list and just four behind Lindner for seventh all-time.

Defensively, Walstad has accumulated 592 rebounds and moved into third all-time on Sunday vs. Detroit Mercy. She is six shy of tying Lindsay Laur, who has 598 in second place all-time.

PASSING THE ROCK
For the second time this season this season, the Panthers had more than 20 assists in a game with 21 coming against Oakland last Friday night. It was the second time this season that MKE totaled better than 20, with a season-best 22 coming against Detroit Mercy on December 29.

The 21 assists on Friday against Oakland came on 31 made field goals, which is the first time Milwaukee registered 30 field goals since January 29, 2022, in the team’s road win at Wright State. The last occurrence that the Panthers had more than 30 made field goals came on January 18, 2019 at Oakland, when Milwaukee was 32-for-64.

Against Detroit Mercy in December, the Panthers had 22 assists on 25 made field goals, the highest assist percentage (88.0) since dishing out 16 assists on 18 field goals (88.8) in a win over Chicago State on March 3, 2016.

NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (38-17) at Los Angeles Clippers (31-27)

0

A pair of teams with aspirations for deep playoff runs will meet Friday night when the Los Angeles Clippers host the Milwaukee Bucks.

On Thursday, both teams made additions for the second half of the season before the NBA’s trade deadline. The Bucks acquired Jae Crowder from the Brooklyn Nets, via the Phoenix Suns, while the Clippers made sweeping changes.

Not only did the Clippers add Bones Hyland in a deal with the Denver Nuggets, but they also brought back Eric Gordon from the Houston Rockets and added Mason Plumlee from the Charlotte Hornets. Guards Reggie Jackson and Luke Kennard departed in the deals.

Adding to the optimism for Los Angeles and Milwaukee is that each squad is healthy again. The Bucks’ Big Three of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday are back together after an injury respite and have led the team to a nine-game winning streak. The most recent victory came Thursday, 115-106 against the host Los Angeles Lakers.

The Clippers are feeling whole again with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George back after both missed time with injuries. To make sure both are well rested in the second half, Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said both stars will be on minutes restrictions heading into the All-Star break.

Both were marginally effective in Los Angeles’ 110-104 defeat to the new-look Mavericks on Wednesday, as Kyrie Irving made his Dallas debut. George had 20 points in 34 minutes, while Leonard had 18 points in 32 minutes.

The loss came after the Clippers went 4-2 on a trip through the Eastern Conference.

Antetokounmpo scored 23 of his 38 points in the second half against the Lakers and added 10 rebounds overall. Milwaukee rallied from an 11-point deficit in the first half and an eight-point gap in the third quarter to defeat the Lakers.

Middleton had 22 points for the Bucks, while Holiday had 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The Lakers were without LeBron James (ankle), one game after he set the NBA’s all-time scoring record on Tuesday.

The Bucks are one game off the pace of the NBA-best Boston Celtics.

Antetokounmpo said he believes his team will be even more aggressive moving forward with Crowder, comparing him to P.J. Tucker, who helped Milwaukee win the championship in the 2020-21 season and now is with the Philadelphia 76ers.

MBB-FBS: Fresno State Bulldogs (9-14) at Nevada Wolfpack (19-6)

Coming off of an exhilarating 77-76 victory on the road over New Mexico, in which Kenan Blackshear hit a game-winning jump shot with 0.1 seconds left on the clock, the University of Nevada Men’s Basketball team will return home to face Fresno State this Friday.

Game Preview

The Pack has won three consecutive games, and they will look to make it four straight against the Bulldogs, while also improving to 13-0 at home and earning their 20th victory of the season.

Nevada is currently one game back from first place in the Mountain West standings, as they will need to secure a victory over Fresno State to keep pace atop the conference.

The Pack took down New Mexico on the road this past Tuesday in remarkable fashion, as Blackshear drilled an extremely difficult jumper that bounced around the rim multiple times before falling in, stunning the Lobos on the road.

Jarod Lucas had one of the best games of his collegiate career, matching a career-high by dropping a game-high 28 points on 11-18 shooting from the field and an incredible mark of 6-9 from behind the arc. The 11 made field goals set a new career-high, and the six made 3-pointers matched a career-high for Lucas.

The 28 points scored extended Lucas’ streak of reaching double figures in scoring to 23 games, and the senior guard has eclipsed the mark in 24 of 25 games overall this season. Lucas continues to maintain pace atop the Mountain West in numerous offensive statistical categories. He currently ranks second in the conference in total points this season (446), second in made 3-pointers (69), second in minutes per game (34.8 MPG), third in points per game (17.8 PPG), third in free throw percentage (85.2%), and third in 3-point field goal percentage (39.9%).

Lucas has been particularly exceptional over Nevada’s past three games, as he is averaging 24.3 points per game on 58.1 percent shooting from the field (25-43), 50 percent from behind the arc (10-20), and 92.9 percent at the free throw line over the Pack’s current three-game winning streak.

Blackshear scored 12 points against the Lobos on 4-10 shooting from the field, while knocking down his lone attempt from behind the arc. The senior also recorded three assists and tallied one steal, while earning a game-high plus/minus of +5 in 23 minutes of action.

Blackshear has now scored in double-figures in 16 straight games and in 22 of 25 games this season. He has also dished out at least three assists in all but two games for Nevada.

Blackshear continues to rank in the top-15 of the Mountain West in an abundance of categories this season. He is currently second in both total assists (116) and assists per game (4.6 APG), while ranking fifth in steals per game (1.7 SPG), eighth in scoring (14.6 PPG), eighth in free throw percentage (79.5%), 10th in minutes per game (32.3 MPG), and 13th in assist/turnover ratio (1.4).

Freshman forward Darrion Williams had another stat-stuffing night for the Pack, scoring eight points while knocking down two 3-pointers, in addition to pulling down five boards, dishing out five assists, and recording one block and one steal.

Williams continues to lead the Pack in rebounding, as the freshman is pulling down an impressive 7.1 boards per contest. Williams not only ranks first on the team in rebounding, but also ranks sixth overall in the conference, while also ranking ninth in the Mountain West in steals per game.

Will Baker scored 10 points on an efficient 5-9 shooting from the field, and he pulled down five rebounds throughout the game. Baker has been sensational at the Lawlor Events Center this season, as he enters Friday’s contest averaging 16.1 points per game on outstanding shooting clips of 66.9 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from behind the arc in 11 home games this season.

Nevada’s bench was immaculate in the Pack’s win over New Mexico, as Daniel Foster, Tyler Powell, and Nick Davidson each provided significant contributions during the game.

Foster had his best outing of the season, scoring six points on a perfect 2-2 shooting from the field and from the free throw line, in addition to dishing out a team-high and new career-high six assists throughout the game.

Powell provided a strong offensive spark off the bench, scoring seven points on 3-6 shooting from the field and 1-3 from behind the arc. Davidson also brought great energy off the bench, scoring four points and pulling down a team-high seven rebounds, while finishing the contest with a plus/minus of +4 in 21 minutes of action.

Nevada had one of their most efficient offensive performances of the year against the Lobos, draining 11 shots from behind the arc on 22 attempts. The Pack also hit 50 percent of their total field goal attempts and knocked down eight of 10 shots at the free throw line.

Nevada also had a solid defensive performance, limiting UNM to an abysmal 4-16 shooting from behind the arc.

The Pack’s defense continues to rank in the top-five of the conference in nearly every statistical category. Nevada is second in the Mountain West in opponent field goal percentage (41.8%), third in turnovers forced (324), fourth in defensive rebounding (26.2 per game), fifth in steals per game (6.2 SPG), and fifth in opponent 3-point field goal percentage (33.3%).

Nevada will face another difficult challenge this Friday, as they will go head to head with one of the top defenses in the Mountain West in Fresno State.

Scouting Fresno State

Fresno State enters Friday’s game with an overall record of 9-14 and a mark of 5-7 in Mountain West play; however, they are currently on a two-game winning streak, earning victories over UNLV and San Jose State in their past two contests.

The Bulldogs have been impressive on the defensive end of the court all season long, as they currently rank second in the conference in opponent points per game, limiting opposing teams to just 64.9 points per contest.

The Bulldogs have been particularly good at forcing turnovers, as they rank fourth in the Mountain West in steals per game (6.2 SPG) and third in turnovers forced per game (13.1).

As solid as the Bulldogs have been on defense, they have struggled at offense this season, as they rank last in the Mountain West in points per game (62.0 PPG), field goal percentage (42.6%), and 3-point field goal percentage (30.3%).

Fresno State is led by the trio of Jemarl Baker Jr., Isaiah Hill, and Isaih Moore. Baker leads the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game, while Moore is right behind him, putting up 11.5 points per game on an outstanding 53.6 percent shooting from the field. Moore is also pulling down an impressive 7.3 rebounds per game, as he ranks fourth in the conference in rebounding.

Hill runs the Bulldogs offense, as he is third on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per game, while leading the team in assists, dishing out an average of 3.6 per game.

Nevada will seek to limit turnovers, preventing the Bulldogs from getting buckets in transition, while also having another strong offensive performance in order to secure their 20th victory of the season and 10th win in Mountain West play.

Series History

Nevada and Fresno State have faced off 47 times throughout history, with the Pack owning a 31-16 record against the Bulldogs in the all-time series. Fresno State won the most recent matchup between the two squads, earning a 73-56 victory over the Pack last February.

WBB-D2: Montana State Billings Yellowjackets (20-4) at Seattle Pacific Falcons (12-9)

With just five games left in the women’s basketball regular season, they’re all important for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.

But the only one that matters most is the next one, regardless of opponent. And this week’s opponent is one of the best teams not only in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, but in the entire West Region.

That would be No. 23-ranked Montana State Billings, which comes to town on Saturday to tangle with SPU in Brougham Pavilion. Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m.

Coming off a home split against Saint Martin’s (a 71-58 win) and Western Oregon (a 57-52 loss), the Falcons (12-9, 7-6 GNAC) face a tough task in MSUB. The Yellowjackets are 20-4 overall, 11-2 in GNAC play. They are the first conference team to reach 20 wins, and one of just two in the West, the other one being Cal State Dominguez Hills at 21-1.

THAT MAKES 7 RANKED OPPONENTS
The contest against No. 23 Billings will be SPU’s seventh against a national top-25 team.

It started on the opening weekend of the season with games against then-No. 12 Cal State San Marcos (the Cougars won, 70-62), and the next day against No. 21 Azusa Pacific (the Falcons got that one, 70-64). The following weekend, it was in Denver against No. 21 Colorado School of Mines (the Orediggers prevailed, 65-54).

Conference play opened at then-No. 11 Alaska Anchorage (the Seawolves won, 62-54). The 2022 calendar year ended on New Year’s Eve at home against No. 22 Central Washington, and Seattle Pacific claimed a 70-63 decision. Western Washington, then ranked No. 6, was in Brougham Pavilion on Jan. 19, and that one went down to the wire before the Vikings took it, 58-53.

Western (No. 8), Colorado Mines (tie No. 12), San Marcos (No. 25) and Azusa (No. 16) are still ranked in this week’s poll compiled by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Billings is making its first appearance in the top 25 after receiving votes in the previous two polls.

Next Saturday, Feb. 18, will be the eight night against a top-25 team when Seattle Pacific visits Bellingham to take on WWU.

SO WHAT’S THE STORY THIS WEEK?

—  Seattle Pacific will be looking to gain a split of the season series against MSUB. The Yellowjackets won on Jan. 14 in Billings, 66-49.
— In that game, the second quarter turned out to be decisive. The Falcons had a 15-10 lead to start the quarter, but shot just 15 percent from the field (2 of 13) and scored only six points while Billings shot 50 percent from the floor (6 of 12), scored 15 points and took a 33-29 halftime lead.
— The Jackets kept it going with 50 percent shooting in the third quarter and 58 percent in the fourth to pull away.
— SPU’s 49 points was a season low. It also had 49 at Northwest Nazarene on Jan. 28.
— Nobody for either team went on a scoring binge. Ashley Alter and Anna Eddy had 10 apiece for the FalconsCariann Kunkel and Aspen Giese tallied 12 each for Montana State Billings.
— The Falcon reserves had a particularly productive night against Saint Martin’s last Thursday, contributing 30 points, 19 rebounds, and five blocked shots.
— SPU’s last victory against Billings at home was 79-74 on Jan. 31, 2019.  The Yellowjackets won here in 2020 and again in 2022. The teams did not play during the pandemic-abbreviated 2021 schedule.
— Alter is now leading the Falcons in both scoring (14.6 per game, tied for No. 6 in the GNAC) and rebounds (5.8, No. 11).
— Alter’s 40 steals also lead the Falcons, and that total includes a career-high seven last Saturday against Western Oregon. Her 2.1 per-game average is No. 4 in the conference.
— Sophomore center Schuyler Berry is No. 9 in GNAC field goal shooting at .463 (63 of 136).
— Redshirt sophomore point guard Hunter Beirne is No. 5 in assists at 3.6.
— Fifth-year forward Natalie Hoff is No. 7 in GNAC free throw accuracy at .828 (53 of 64). She also is tied for No. 8 in blocked shots at 0.8 (17 total).
— Seattle Pacific remains No. 3 in GNAC defense, allowing just 58.5 points per game.
— The Falcons also continue to vacuum up the rebounds: 77.1 percent of the available opportunities at the defensive end (tied with Western Washington or No. 1 on the conference list) and 34.9 percent at the offensive end (No. 2 behind the Vikings).
— Coach Mike Simonson‘s teams are 2-5 all-time against Montana State Billings.

SCOUTING THE MONTANA STATE BILLINGS YELLOWJACKETS: 20-4, 11-2 GNAC (2nd)
All-time series:
SPU leads, 30-26.  Current series streak: MSUB won 4.  Last time: MSUB 66, SPU 49 (Jan. 14 at Billings).  Last SPU series win: SPU 69, MSUB 63 (Jan. 23, 2020 at Billings).
Yellowjackets in a nutshell: Billings has won nine straight games, the current longest winning streak in the GNAC, and all of those since the calendar flipped to 2023. One of those victories was 73-61 against Western Washington on Jan. 21 in Montana, snapping the Vikings’ 14-game winning streak. The Yellowjackets kept it going last week at home by defeating Western Oregon, 76-57, and Saint Martin’s, 59-49. Senior 6-foot-3 forward Taryn Shelly was just coming back to action when MSUB and the Falcons played last month and provided nine points in a reserve role. She’s still providing a big boost off the bench,, now leading the team in scoring at 12.0 points per game on .495 shooting from the field, along with 4.4 rebounds. Sophomore 5-11 forward Dyauni Boyce averages 11.3 points plus a team-high 6.0 rebounds. Cariann Kunkel, a senior 5-10 forward, chips in 10.6 points per game. Junior 5-11 guard Shayla Montague and sophomore 5-8 guard Aspen Giese both average 8.3 points, but can drain ’em from downtown: a team-leading 44 makes for Montague (on .379 shooting) and 35 for Giese (on .354 shooting).

LET’S TALK TOURNAMENT
Seattle Pacific comes into the week in fourth place in the GNAC standings. The Falcons are one game behind third-place Central Washington (8-5), half a game ahead of fifth-place Alaska Anchorage (6-6) and one game ahead of seventh-place Simon Fraser (6-7).

The top six teams in the final standings qualify for the GNAC Tournament, which is set for Thursday through Saturday, March 2-4, in Carver Gymnasium at Western Washington in Bellingham. As of now, the Falcons haven’t clinched a tournament spot, but are well positioned to do so.

First-round games are on March 2 at 5:15 and 7:30 p.m. Semifinals are on March 3, also at 5:15 and 7:30, and the championship game is on March 4 at 7:30.

The tournament champion gets the GNAC’s automatic qualifying berth into the NCAA West Regionals. Automatic spots also go to the California Collegiate Athletic Association and Pacific West Conference tournament champions. That leaves five available at-large berths to be distributed among the teams that do not win their tournaments.

FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE …
Maya Hoff
came off the bench – and came up big last Thursday at home against Saint Martin’s.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore guard contributed a career-high 18 points, plus 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. She hit 5 for eight from the field, and 8 of 10 from the free throw line. She missed a pair of free throws in the first quarter, then bounced back with eight makes in a row. The last four of those came inside the final 75 seconds of the game to help the Falcons close out a 71-58 victory.

Hoff previously had a double-digit rebound game, collecting a career-high 12 on Dec. 8 at home against Lincoln of California. But she had just four points that night. Her previous career scoring high had been 13 on Nov. 21, 2021 against Azusa Pacific.

Along with her points and rebounds, Hoff had two blocked shots against the Saints. Her best in that category is three, on Nov. 18 in the season opener against Cal State San Marcos.

… AND CAREER TRIPLE DIGITS
While Hoff was doing the double-double thing things, a couple of her teammates were reaching triple-digits for their careers in certain statistical categories in the Saint Martin’s game.

–Sophomore point guard Hailey Marlow reached 100 career points. She comes into this week with 104.
–Sophomore center Schuyler Berry’s first field goal in that game was  her 100th .She has 101.

The next triple-digit milestones within reach is 100 makes from 3-point range for Ashley Alter and 100 assists for Hunter Beirne. Alter has hit 92 treys. Beirne has recorded 86 helpers.

Speaking of milestones: Alter’s 15 points last Saturday put her at 949 for her career. With another 51, she will become the 25th Falcon to reach 1,000.

UP NEXT
The Falcons take their final regular-season road trip next week, visiting Simon Fraser on Thursday in Burnaby, B.C., and Western Washington on Saturday in Bellingham. Both games tip off at 7:00 p.m. SPU beat the Red Leafs last month in Seattle, 64-53, but fell to the Vikings, 58-53.

Atlanta Dream Acquire No. 6 Pick, Send Tiffany Hayes to Sun

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Atlanta Dream have acquired the 2023 No. 6 overall Draft pick from the Connecticut Sun in exchange for guard Tiffany Hayes, the organization announced today.

“We want to thank Tip for everything she has done for this franchise over the last 11 years, and we wish her nothing but the best in Connecticut,” said general manager Dan Padover. “She has cemented herself as one of the most decorated and successful players in Dream history, and we are forever grateful for the competitiveness and enthusiasm she always brought to the court.”
