NBA Preview: Miami Heat (31-25) at Orlando Magic (23-33)

0

The Miami Heat will look to record a ninth straight win in their home state on Saturday night when they visit the Orlando Magic.

The Heat recorded eight of those victories in Miami, including a 110-105 decision against the Magic on Jan. 27.

Jimmy Butler, who scored 29 points in that game, converted an alley-oop pass from Gabe Vincent with three-tenths of a second remaining in the Heat’s 97-95 win over the visiting Houston Rockets on Friday.

Butler scored two points in each of the first three quarters before contributing 10 of the Heat’s final 13 points in the victory.

Herro collected 31 points, nine rebounds and eight assists on Friday. He made 5 of 10 attempts from beyond the arc, including a corner 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to give Miami a 93-91 lead.

Bam Adebayo recorded 20 points and nine rebounds versus the Rockets. He had 20 points, seven assists and six boards in the previous meeting with Orlando.

Vincent was inserted into the Heat’s starting lineup on Friday in place of Kyle Lowry, who has missed three straight games due to left knee soreness. Lowry also will sit out the Saturday game.

Injuries aside, Miami elected to stand pat at the NBA’s trade deadline. Coach Erik Spoelstra said the players didn’t appear fazed by the organization’s lack of movement during the Friday morning shootaround.

Orlando enters the Saturday clash with three wins in its past four games, including a 115-104 decision against the Western Conference-leading Denver Nuggets on Thursday.

Wendell Carter Jr. scored 19 points and reserve Cole Anthony collected 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists versus the Nuggets.

Anthony wasn’t shy about applauding the efforts of the Magic’s bench players, who combined for 56 points. Reserve big man Bol Bol matched Anthony with 17 points.

Anthony joined Franz Wagner and rookie Paolo Banchero in scoring 19 points apiece during the previous meeting with Miami.

Orlando’s Gary Harris is listed as questionable for the Saturday game because of right adductor soreness. He sat out on Thursday due to the injury.

NBA Preview: Denver Nuggets (38-18) at Charlotte Hornets (15-42)

0

The Denver Nuggets want more energy to avoid another disappointing result.

They might be going up against the right opponent to turn things around as they visit the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night. The Hornets have lost six games in a row.

The Nuggets began a three-game road trip with a 115-104 loss to the Orlando Magic on Thursday despite Aaron Gordon’s season-high 37 points.

Denver is generally a high-scoring team, eclipsing the 120-point mark in four of its previous five games before the loss to the Magic.

With Denver owning a 12-14 road record, Malone said a goal should be reaching .500 in that category by the end of the trip. The Nuggets might be short-handed on Saturday, though. Gordon is listed as questionable due to a left rib contusion, and Jamal Murray, who has missed the past three games because of right knee inflammation, also in questionable.

The Hornets lost 127-116 on Friday night to the host Boston Celtics, so three of their losses in the skid have been by double digits.

The problems were mostly on defense as the Hornets allowed the Celtics to connect on 25 shots from 3-point range, the most by a Charlotte opponent this season.

That ought to be good news for Denver, which hit only 10 of 33 shots from beyond the arc against Orlando. Most glaring was Michael Porter Jr. going 3-for-12 from long distance (and 3-for-16 overall), but he has the green light to keep attempting those.

It wasn’t just the perimeter areas that troubled the Nuggets. Orlando held a 56-10 edge in bench points, something that Malone said is difficult to overcome.

Some of that could be remedied by the addition of center Thomas Bryant, whom the Nuggets acquired Thursday in a trade from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Denver defeated Charlotte 119-115 on Dec. 18 at home with Nikola Jokic racking up 40 points, 27 rebounds and 10 assists. Jokic had a string of four triple-doubles snapped Thursday, but he still registered 29 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

The Hornets will be regrouping in the post while playing their second game without center Mason Plumlee, who was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers this week.

On the plus side, rookie center Mark Williams had a double-double through three quarters in Boston in his first NBA start, and he finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (35-19) at Brooklyn Nets (33-22)

0

During the past week, things were so eventful for the Brooklyn Nets that they went from Kyrie Irving being the top scoring option until Kevin Durant returns from an injury to having an entirely different roster.

The first game with the overhauled squad went well, and new acquisitions Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson could make their debuts Saturday night when the Nets host the Philadelphia 76ers.

Bridges and Johnson are listed as questionable as the Nets prepare to face the 76ers one year and one day after granting James Harden’s trade request and dealing him to Philadelphia for Ben Simmons, Seth Curry and Andre Drummond.

Irving demanded a trade last week and the Nets granted his wish on Monday, dealing him and Markieff Morris to the Dallas Mavericks for guard Spencer Dinwiddie, defensive-minded forward Dorian Finney-Smith and multiple draft picks.

At the time of Irving’s request, it was unknown how Durant felt, but by Thursday, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns in a four-team deal that landed Bridges, Johnson and multiple draft picks, including four first-rounders.

Bridges, who was on the NBA’s all-defensive first team last year, joins the Nets after averaging a career-high 17.2 points a game. He is shooting 46.3 percent after shooting at least 50 percent in the previous three seasons.

Bridges averaged 24.5 points in his final six games for Phoenix, including a 21-point showing Tuesday in Brooklyn.

Johnson averaged a career-best 13.9 points, but a knee injury limited him to 17 games. Since returning Jan. 19, he put up 14.7 points per game and contributed 14 points on Tuesday against the Nets.

Bridges and Johnson enjoyed their first appearance as Nets from courtside seats and watched their new teammates hold the Chicago Bulls to 21 points in the fourth quarter as Brooklyn won 116-105 on Thursday. Dinwiddie scored 13 of his 25 in the fourth while Cam Thomas added 20 after scoring at least 40 in each of his previous three games.

Philadelphia owns a pair of home wins over the Nets this season, and its 137-133 victory against the Nets on Jan. 25 is part of its stretch of 23 wins in 30 games. The Sixers shot 51.2 percent in the latest meeting and survived allowing 64.5 percent shooting to the Nets by hitting 18 3-pointers and making 35 of 36 free throws.

Sixers star Joel Embiid scored 26 points in that contest after sitting out the teams’ Nov. 22 encounter. He scored 13 of his 35 in the third quarter on Friday as Philadelphia posted a 119-108 home win over the New York Knicks.

Embiid is averaging 33.1 points in seven games since the last meeting with Brooklyn.

Philadelphia hopes to replicate its defensive showing from Friday, when it allowed just 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Harden added 20 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds for Philadelphia on Friday in the warmup for his latest matchup against his ex-team. He averaged 17 points, 4.5 rebounds and six assists in the two prior meetings with Brooklyn this season.

NEW YORK – Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Ian Cole has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for kneeing Colorado Avalanche forward Andrew Cogliano during NHL Game No. 821 in Tampa on Thursday, Feb. 9, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 1:50 of the first period.

The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

* The Hurricanes will become the 28th different franchise to play in an NHL regular-season outdoor game – only the Coyotes, Blue Jackets, Panthers and Kraken have not (Seattle will host the Winter Classic next year). Carolina can become the 15th team to win its inaugural appearance in an outdoor game and second in as many seasons following Tampa Bay in the 2022 Stadium Series.

* This will be the 13th Stadium Series, with North Carolina set to become the ninth U.S. state to host (Colorado: 2x, New York: 2x, Pennsylvania: 2x, California: 2x, Minnesota, Illinois, Maryland and Tennessee).

* The 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series is projected to generate $12.4 million in total economic impact for the region, according to a study by Visit Raleigh. This estimate is for the game only. A post-event economic impact report will include the game and all surrounding events.

* The Capitals (3-0-0) will play their fourth outdoor game in franchise history following the 2011 Winter Classic2015 Winter Classic and the 2018 Stadium Series. The only teams with more such appearances are the Blackhawks (6 GP), Penguins (6 GP), Flyers (5 GP) and Bruins (5 GP).

* A victory against Carolina would secure Washington its fourth win in a regular-season outdoor game, which would tie the NY Rangers (4-0-0) and Boston (4-1-0) for the most among all teams. The Rangers are the only franchise to win each of its first four appearances.

* One of Washington’s three victories in outdoor games saw the club erase a deficit – they rallied from a 1-0 hole against Pittsburgh during the 2011 Winter Classic. Should the Capitals stage another come-from-behind win, they would join the Bruins (4x), Rangers (3x), Red Wings (2x) and Maple Leafs (2x) with multiple such performances.

* The 2023 Stadium Series will be the 185th regular-season meeting between the clubs, the fourth most the Hurricanes/Whalers franchise has faced one opponent (BUF: 210 GP; MTL: 209 GP & BOS: 209 GP). Entering Feb. 10, the Capitals (103-56-24, 230 points) hold the all-time, head-to-head edge (CAR: 66-90-27, 159 points) while the Hurricanes won their only playoff series (2019 R1).

* During the 2019 First Round, the Hurricanes overcame series deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to force a winner-take-all showdown in Washington, where Carolina rallied yet again – this time from a multi-goal deficit – in what ended as the third-longest Game 7 in NHL history. It marked the Hurricanes’ first series win in a decade – notably against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

* The first meeting between the two franchises was Dec. 4, 1979, when the Hartford Whalers and Capitals skated to a 3-3 tie. Gordie Howe (1-0—1) scored his 796th career goal and Mark Howe (0-1—1) assisted on the game-tying tally, marking one of 26 times the father-son duo found the score sheet in the same regular-season game.

* A total of 54 players (skaters & goaltenders) have appeared in at least one game for both the Capitals and Hurricanes/Whalers franchise (regular season or playoffs), including current Washington defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk who spent 217 games with Carolina from 2017-18 to 2019-20. Other notables include “Mr. Game 7” Justin Williams (CAR: 496 GP; WSH: 187 GP) and the NHL’s former “Ironman” Doug Jarvis (HFD: 155 GP; WSH: 282).

Trevor Van Riemsdyk has skated in two outdoor games while his brother James Van Riemsdyk has played in seven. Their nine combined outdoor games are the most among brothers and three more than the next closest, the Staal brothers; Jordan Staal (2 GP) and Marc Staal (4 GP). Trevor and Jordan are set to face off in the 2023 Stadium Series.

* Hockey took its first strides in the state of North Carolina after the Eastern Hockey League expanded to the Southeastern Region of the U.S. The Baltimore Clippers finished out their season at Charlotte Coliseum as the Charlotte Rebels after their home rink, Carlin’s Iceland, burned down in 1956.

* The team permanently relocated to the “Tar Heel State” for the 1956-57 season, which included a Charlotte Clippers rebrand until 1959-60 when the League also welcomed the Greensboro Generals – a club based out of Greensboro, North Carolina. A contest was later held to rename the Clippers ahead of the 1960-61 season, where Maurice “Rocket” Richard made the final suggestion via telegram; choosing Checkers over Crowns, Vikings, Sabres, Wildwings, Furies and Satans.

* The Charlotte Checkers made their return to the ice during the 1993-94 season as part of the East Coast Hockey League after commissioner Pat Kelly awarded an expansion franchise to Charlotte in 1992. The Checkers joined the Greensboro Monarchs (1989-1995) and Raleigh Icecaps (1991-1998) as the third ECHL team based out of North Carolina. The Checkers would eventually win the Jack Riley Cup as ECHL champions during their third season in 1995-96.

* The NHL made its way to North Carolina ahead of the 1997-98 season after the Hartford Whalers relocated to Greensboro and began play as the Carolina Hurricanes. The campaign witnessed the club conclude the year with four 20-goal scorers as well as finishing just outside the playoff picture with a 33-41-8 (74 points) record.

* In 2005-06, the Hurricanes captured the first Stanley Cup in franchise history after defeating the Oilers in seven games – coached by current Capitals bench boss Peter LavioletteEric Staal (21 years, 233 days) led the postseason with 9‑19—28 in 25 games and became the second-youngest leading playoff scorer in the League’s modern era (since 1943‑44), behind only Gordie Howe in 1949 (21 years, 16 days w/ DET). Meanwhile, Cam Ward became the fourth rookie to capture the Conn Smythe Trophy joining fellow goaltenders Ken Dryden (1971 w/ MTL), Patrick Roy (1986 w/ MTL) and Ron Hextall (1987 w/ PHI).

* In 2010-11, RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C. (currently known as PNC Arena) hosted the 2011 NHL All-Star Game which featured Team Lidstrom defeat Team Staal 11-10. The event marked the first of three NHL All-Star Drafts, with Hurricanes captain Eric Staal selecting longtime teammate Cam Ward with the first-overall pick and the first-ever pick at the event.

* In 2010, Checkers owner Michael Kahn announced the purchase of the American Hockey League’s Albany River Rats – the minor-league affiliate of the Hurricanes. The purchase, nearly four years after Carolina’s first and only Stanley Cup in 2006, initiated a franchise relocation to Charlotte from Albany beginning in 2010-11. In 2018-19, the AHL’s rendition of the Checkers would amass a League-best 51-17-8 record during the regular season en route to a Calder Cup championship.

* Raleigh-born Logan Brown (13 GP w/ STL) and Jake Leschyshyn (30 GP w/ NYR) have each appeared in an NHL game this season. They are two of four North Carolina-born players in NHL history to skate in the League, joining Jared Boll (579 GP) and Ben Smith (237 GP).

* Eleven current Carolina players have appeared in at least one NHL outdoor game (min. 1 GP in 2022-23). Their statistics in those contests are listed in the attached PDF.

Frederik Andersen turned aside 33 of 37 shots in a Maple Leafs victory against the Red Wings during the NHL Centennial Classic at Exhibition Stadium on Jan. 1, 2017. Should he start for the Hurricanes against the Capitals, Andersen can become the seventh goaltender to win multiple outdoors games; Henrik Lundqvist (4-0-0), Craig Anderson (3-0-0), Ty Conklin (2-1-0), Braden Holtby (2-0-0), Jonathan Quick (2-1-0) and Tuukka Rask (2-1-0) have all done so.

Jordan Staal is expected to skate in his third career outdoor game following the 2011 Winter Classic and 2008 Winter Classic (both w/ PIT). The Hurricanes captain is set to become the fifth player to go 10 or more years between outdoor appearances after Andrei Markov (12 years, 40 days: 2003 Heritage Classic & 2016 Winter Classic), Alex Goligoski (11 years: 2011 Winter Classic & 2022 Winter Classic), Saku Koivu (10 years, 64 days: 2003 Heritage Classic & 2014 Stadium Series) and Jarett Stoll (10 years, 64 days: 2003 Heritage Classic & 2014 Stadium Series).

Sebastian Aho (205-242—447 in 489 GP) enters the event having reached the 200-goal milestone in his career earlier in 2022-23, doing so thanks to a six-game goal streak from Jan. 21- Feb.1 (9-0—9 in 6 GP).

* Carolina (34-9-8, 76 points) currently sits second in the NHL’s overall standings behind Boston (39-7-5, 83 points), which also participated in an outdoor game earlier this season (2023 Winter Classic vs. PIT). The 2022-23 season is just the second to feature each of the top two teams in the overall standings each participate in an outdoor game, joining 2013-14 (1st; ANA in 2014 Stadium Series & 2nd; PIT in 2014 Stadium Series).

* The 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series marks the seventh regular-season game the Hurricanes/Whalers franchise will contest at a neutral site. The Hurricanes have skated to victories in each of their two such contests, defeating the Wild on Oct. 7 and Oct. 8, 2010 for the Premiere Series at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, while Hartford lost each of their four such contests (last: Feb. 24, 1994 at DET: 3-0 L at Richfield Coliseum at Richfield Township, Ohio).

* Seventeen current Washington players have appeared in at least one NHL outdoor game (min. 1 GP in 2022-23), including nine who have dressed for the Capitals in a previous event and eight with another club. Their statistics in those contests are listed in the attached PDF.

Nicklas Backstrom’s three assists in outdoor games are tied for the fourth most among all skaters. Henrik Zetterberg (0-7—7 in 4 GP), Jonathan Toews (2-5—7 in 6 GP) and Marian Hossa (0-4—4 in 3 GP) are the only players with more.

Nicklas Backstrom also stands as one of three players to register at least three points in a single period in an outdoor game, following a 1-2—3 performance during the first period of the 2018 Stadium Series. The others: Jordan Kyrou (2-2—4 in P2, 2021 WC) and Martin Havlat (1-2—3 in P1, 2009 WC).

Nicklas Backstrom is also the only player on either roster to score a game-winning goal in an outdoor game (2018 Stadium Series vs. TOR). With another, he would tie Brad Richards (2012 Winter Classic at PHI & 2016 Stadium Series at COL) for the most by one player in League history.

Alex Ovechkin has 2-1—3 in his three career outdoor games. With another tally in Raleigh, North Carolina, he would become the seventh player to score three or more career goals outdoors – a list topped by David Pastrnak (4-1—5 in 3 GP)

* Alex Ovechkin has scored 47 of his 812 career goals against the Hurricanes – tied with the Flyers for his third most against a single opponent. His totals against the Jets/Thrashers (53) and Lightning (50) rank first and second, respectively.

* At 37 years old, not only can Alex Ovechkin join rare company should he find the back of the net against the Hurricanes, but the Capitals captain can also become the first player in NHL history to score in three consecutive outdoor game appearances. David Pastrnak (2021 NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe & 2019 Winter Classic) and Sidney Crosby (2019 & 2017 Stadium Series) both had the opportunity to achieve the feat at the 2023 Winter Classic but didn’t.

* Defensemen Matt Irwin (2015 Stadium Series w/ SJS & 2020 Winter Classic w/ NSH) and Erik Gustafsson (2019 Winter Classic w/ CHI & 2021 NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe w/ PHI) are appearing in their third outdoor game with their third different team. Only two other defensemen have appeared in an outdoor game with three different teams: Marco Scandella (3; 2016 Stadium Series w/ MIN, 2018 Winter Classic w/ BUF & 2022 Winter Classic w/ STL) and Nick Holden (3; 2016 Stadium Series w/ COL, 2018 Winter Classic w/ NYR & 2021 NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe w/ VGK).

* Washington scored three times during the first period of the 2018 Stadium Series against Toronto en route to a 5-2 victory. In the process, the Capitals became just the third team to score three goals in the opening period of an outdoor game after the Blackhawks did so during the 2009 Winter Classic and the Devils accomplished the feat in the 2014 Stadium Series.

Padres sign RHP Yu Darvish to new six-year contract

0

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have signed right-hander Yu Darvish to a new six-year contract through the 2028 season, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

In 30 starts for the Padres last season, Darvish went 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA (67 ER, 194.2 IP), .207 opponents average and 197 strikeouts to just 37 walks (5.32 SO/BB ratio).  His career-low 0.95 WHIP (148 H) was the lowest single-season mark in franchise history (min. 30 starts), besting Randy Jones’ 0.99 WHIP in 1976.  Darvish led the National League with 25 quality starts and threw 6.0 or more innings in 28 of his 30 outings, tied for most in the majors with the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole.  On September 2, he surpassed the 3,000-strikeout mark in his 17th professional season between Japan (2005-11, 1,250 SO) and Major League Baseball (2012-22, 1,788 SO).  Darvish was named NL Pitcher of the Month for September, collecting a 5-1 record and 1.85 ERA (8 ER, 39.0 IP) in six starts with 44 strikeouts and only eight walks.  Darvish also made four postseason starts for the Padres, going 2-1 with a 2.88 ERA (8 ER, 25.0 IP) and three quality starts.  He tossed a postseason career-high 7.0 innings in both Game 1 of the Wild Card Series on October 7 at New York and Game 1 of the NLCS on October 18.

A five-time MLB All-Star (2012-14, 2017, 2021), Darvish has posted a 95-75 career record with a 3.50 ERA (579 ER, 1488.0 IP), 1.13 WHIP, .217 opponents average, and 1,788 strikeouts in 242 career Major League starts between the Texas Rangers (2012-17), Los Angeles Dodgers (2017), Chicago Cubs (2018-20) and Padres (2021-22).  He has finished in the Top 10 of Cy Young voting four times in his career (9th in AL in 2012, 2nd in AL in 2013, 2nd in NL in 2020, 8th in NL in 2022).  Since making his MLB debut in 2012, Darvish ranks 4th among qualifying starters in opponents average, 6th in strikeouts and 11th in fWAR (32.3).  Darvish appeared in seven seasons with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of the Nippon Professional Baseball League, going 93-38 with a 1.99 ERA (281 ER, 1268.1 IP), 0.98 WHIP, 55 CG, 18 SHO and 1,250 SO in 167 games (164 starts).  He was also a member of Japan’s second World Baseball Classic championship team in 2009, going 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 13.0 innings.

Blue Jays sign Bichette

The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms with INF Bo Bichette on a three-year contract (US $33,600,000), avoiding arbitration.

Bichette, 24, batted .290 with 43 doubles, one triple, 24 home runs, and 93 RBI during the 2022 season. The 6-0, 190 lb. shortstop was selected by the Blue Jays in the second round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft and debuted with the club in 2019. Bichette was named an All-Star in 2021 and is the only player in franchise history to lead the American League in hits in consecutive seasons, having done so in each of the past two campaigns. Over the course of four Major League seasons, the native of Orlando owns a .297 batting average to go with an .831 OPS.

SUPER BOWL LVII:
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS VS. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

On Sunday, February 12, the Kansas City Chiefs (16-3) and the Philadelphia Eagles (16-3) will meet in Super Bowl LVII (6:30 PM ET, FOX) at State Farm Stadium in Arizona. It marks the sixth time since 2000 that the two No. 1 seeds will meet in the Super Bowl.

Kansas City and Philadelphia combined for 28 regular-season victories and 32 wins, including the postseason, this year, both tied for the second-most among Super Bowl opponents. The Chiefs became the third team with at least 12 regular-season wins in five consecutive regular seasons, joining NEW ENGLAND (eight straight seasons from 2010-17) and INDIANAPOLIS (seven straight seasons from 2003-09).

The Eagles, who led the NFL with 70 sacks, and Chiefs, who ranked second with 55, combined for 125 regular-season sacks, the most-ever by Super Bowl opponents. Philadelphia is looking to become the sixth team to lead the league in sacks and win the Super Bowl in the same season. The Eagles, who enter Super Bowl LVII with a single-season NFL record 39 rushing touchdowns, can become the fourth team since 1990 to lead the NFL in rushing touchdowns and win the Super Bowl in the same season, joining DALLAS (Super Bowl XXX), DENVER (Super Bowl XXXIII) and WASHINGTON (Super Bowl XXVI).

Kansas City head coach ANDY REID has 21 career postseason victories, trailing only BILL BELICHICK (31) for the most playoff wins by a head coach all-time. Including the postseason, he has the fifth-most total wins (268), by a head coach in NFL history, trailing only Belichick (329) as well as Pro Football Hall of Famers DON SHULA (347), GEORGE HALAS (324) and TOM LANDRY (270).

Reid, at 64 years and 330 days old on Sunday, can become the fourth-oldest head coach to win a Super Bowl. Philadelphia head coach NICK SIRIANNI, who will be 41 years and 242 days old on Sunday, can become the fifth-youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl. He would also become the ninth individual to win a Super Bowl within his first two seasons as a head coach and the first since 2017 (DOUG PEDERSON).

On Sunday, with starts by Chiefs quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES (27 years and 148 days old) and Eagles quarterback JALEN HURTS (24 years and 189 days old), it would mark the youngest combined age (51 years and 337 days) by starting quarterbacks in a Super Bowl.

Mahomes can become the fifth quarterback under the age of 30 to start three Super Bowls in a four-season span, joining TOM BRADY (three starts from 2001-04) and Pro Football Hall of Famers TROY AIKMAN (three from 1992-95), JOHN ELWAY (three from 1986-89) and BOB GRIESE (three from 1971-73). He can also surpass Brady (27 years and 187 days old in Super Bowl XXXIX) as the youngest quarterback ever to start three career Super Bowls.

Mahomes, who led the NFL with 5,250 passing yards, is looking to become the first player to throw for at least 5,000 yards and win the Super Bowl in the same season. He is set to face the league’s top pass defense in Philadelphia, who allowed 179.8 passing yards per game. There have been two previous instances of the passing yards leader and the top passing defense meeting in a Super Bowl, each won by the team with the top-ranked pass defense [Super Bowl XLVIII (Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING vs. SEATTLE) and Super Bowl XXXVII (RICH GANNON vs. TAMPA BAY)].

Hurts can become the fourth starting quarterback under the age of 25 to win a Super Bowl, joining BEN ROETHLISBERGER (23 years and 340 days old in Super Bowl XL), PATRICK MAHOMES (24 years and 138 days old in Super Bowl LIV) and TOM BRADY (24 years and 184 days old in Super Bowl XXXVI). Hurts is 16-1 as a starting quarterback this season, including the playoffs, the sixth-highest winning percentage by a quarterback in a single season in the Super Bowl era (minimum 10 starts).

Both Mahomes and Hurts are finalists for the Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award. There have been six previous instances of players winning both the NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP awards in the same season: Pro Football Hall of Famers TERRY BRADSHAW (1978), JOE MONTANA (1989), EMMITT SMITH (1993), BART STARR (1966), KURT WARNER (1999) and STEVE YOUNG (1994).

Kansas City tight end TRAVIS KELCE and Philadelphia center JASON KELCE are set to become the first pair of brothers to face off in a Super Bowl and the fourth set of brothers to appear in the same Super Bowl, joining GLENN and LYLE BLACKWOOD (Super Bowls XVII and XIX), ARCHIE and RAY GRIFFIN (Super Bowl XVI) and DEVIN and JASON MCCOURTY (Super Bowl LIII). The Kelce’s have combined for nine First-Team All-Pro selections, the most of any brother duo in NFL history.

Travis Kelce enters Super Bowl LVII ranked second in receptions (127) and receiving yards (1,467) and tied for second in touchdown receptions (15) in postseason history, trailing only Pro Football Hall of Famer JERRY RICE in all three categories.

Mahomes has thrown 13 postseason touchdown passes to Kelce, trailing only the pair of TOM BRADY and ROB GRONKOWSKI (15) for the most postseason touchdowns between a quarterback-receiver pairing in NFL history. The Chiefs duo have also connected for 1,129 yards in their postseason careers, the fourth-most yards in postseason history by a quarterback-receiver pairing, trailing only Brady and JULIAN EDELMAN (1,442 yards), Brady and Gronkowski (1,389) and the Pro Football Hall of Famer duo of TROY AIKMAN and MICHAEL IRVIN (1,169).

Hurts, who has 15 rushing touchdowns including the postseason – the most in a single season by a quarterback in NFL history – and running back MILES SANDERS (13 rushing touchdowns, including playoffs) are the first teammate duo each with at least 13 rushing touchdowns in a single season in NFL history, including the postseason. During the regular season, wide receivers A.J. BROWN (88 receptions for 1,496 yards) and DEVONTA SMITH (95 receptions for 1,196 yards) became the first duo in Philadelphia franchise history with at least 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. The Eagles look to join the 2006 INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (Pro Football Hall of Famer MARVIN HARRISON and REGGIE WAYNE) as the only teams with two players each with at least 80 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards in the regular season and win the Super Bowl in the same year.

Kansas City defensive end FRANK CLARK recorded 1.5 sacks in the AFC Championship game and has 13.5 career postseason sacks, trailing only WILLIE MCGINEST (16) and Pro Football Hall of Famer BRUCE SMITH (14.5) for the most postseason sacks by a player since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic. Chiefs defensive tackle CHRIS JONES and Eagles linebacker HAASON REDDICK each recorded two sacks on Championship weekend and have a chance to join VON MILLER (2015) and LAMARR WOODLEY (2008) as the only players since 1982 to have at least two sacks in both a conference championship game and Super Bowl in the same postseason.

Reddick enters Super Bowl LVII with 19.5 sacks, including the postseason, tied for the fourth-most sacks by a player entering the Super Bowl since 1982. With Reddick (16 regular-season sacks), defensive end BRANDON GRAHAM (11), defensive tackle JAVON HARGRAVE (11) and defensive end JOSH SWEAT (11), the Eagles became the first team since 1982 with four players each recording at least 10 sacks in the same season.
