* The Hurricanes took down the Capitals in Washington ahead of their meeting at the 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series on Saturday. Each team will take to the ice one more time before facing off at Carter-Finley Stadium, home of the NC State Wolfpack (CAR: Feb. 16 vs. MTL; WSH: Feb. 16 vs. FLA).

David Pastrnak scored in overtime to help the Bruins collect their 40th win of the season and match the fewest games in NHL history to reach the mark.

* Twenty-two-year-old Kevin Mandolese had an NHL debut to remember, turning aside 46 shots to backstop the Senators to their second comeback win in as many days.

HURRICANES EDGE CAPITALS IN 2023 STADIUM SERIES PREVIEW
Brent Burns (1-0—1) scored one of Carolina’s three goals and Frederik Andersen made 34 saves as the Hurricanes (35-10-8, 78 points) withstood two game-tying tallies from the Capitals to earn a victory against their 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series opponent.

* Burns (1-0—1 in 2015 SS w/ SJS) and Andersen are two of 11 current Carolina players who have appeared in at least one NHL outdoor game (min. 1 GP in 2022-23), with the latter backstopping the Maple Leafs to victory against the Red Wings during the NHL Centennial Classic at Exhibition Stadium on Jan. 1, 2017 (33 saves).

* The 2023 Stadium Series will be the 185th regular-season meeting between the clubs, the fourth most the Hurricanes/Whalers franchise has faced one opponent (BUF: 210 GP; BOS: 209 GP; & MTL: 208 GP). The Capitals (103-57-24, 230 points) hold the all-time, head-to-head edge (CAR: 67-90-27, 161 points) but the Hurricanes won their only playoff series (2019 R1).

BRUINS JOIN ELITE COMPANY WITH 40TH WIN IN 53 GAMES
David Pastrnak (1-1—2) assisted on the game-tying tally and scored his 39th goal of the season in overtime to help NHL-leading Boston (40-8-5, 85 points) become the first team to reach the 40-win mark in 2022-23. The Bruins, who have lost consecutive games only once during this current campaign (0-2-1 from Jan. 26-29), matched the 2015-16 Capitals (53 GP) for the fewest contests to hit 40 wins in a single season.

* Boston has 29 games remaining in 2022-23, with 12 contests against clubs currently occupying a postseason position, and continues its chase toward breaking the NHL’s single-season wins record (62: DET in 1995-96 & TBL in 2018-19) as well as the single-season points record (132: MTL in 1976-77).

* The Bruins own a .802 point percentage and sit as one of seven teams in NHL history with a point percentage of .800 or higher at this stage of a season (860 GP), joining the 1929-30 Bruins (.875), 1943-44 Canadiens (.830), 1976-77 Canadiens (.825), 1977-78 Canadiens (.806), 2012-13 Blackhawks (.802) and 1944-45 Canadiens (.800). Every team went on to win the Stanley Cup except for the Bruins in 1929-30 (SCF loss vs. MTL) and the Canadiens in 1944-45 (SF loss vs. TOR).

GRAVES’ LATE GO-AHEAD GOAL GUIDES DEVILS TO 20TH ROAD VICTORY
With the help of a late go-ahead goal by Ryan Graves and a 31-save performance by Vitek Vanecek, the Devils claimed victory at Nationwide Arena and became the first team in NHL history to record 20 road wins in 26 games or fewer – the previous mark was 27 contests, accomplished by the Capitals twice (2019-20 & 2015-16).

Graves’ tally at 59:58 of the contest is tied for the latest go-ahead goal in Devils/Rockies/Scouts franchise history, a mark set by Patrik Elias on Jan. 26, 2000 (at FLA).

LIGHTNING DEFEAT AVALANCHE AGAIN, LEAPFROG MAPLE LEAFS IN ATLANTIC
Nikita Kucherov (1-0—1) scored to extend his point streak to 11 games while Andrei Vasilevskiy made 43 saves to help the Lightning (35-16-2, 72 points) defeat the Avalanche and move into second place in the Atlantic Division for the first time since Nov. 5, leapfrogging the idle Maple Leafs (32-14-8, 72 points).

* Kucherov became the third player in Lightning history to record multiple point streaks of 11-plus games in a single season (also 11 GP from Oct. 15 – Nov. 8), joining Martin St. Louis (2x: 2009-10 & 2006-07) and Steven Stamkos (2022-23).

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (30-28) at Los Angeles Lakers (26-32)

0

Lakers hope to redirect course vs. Pelicans

The visiting New Orleans Pelicans will face the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday in a rematch of a game that appears to have altered the fortunes of each team.

The Pelicans ended a 10-game losing streak with a 131-126 home victory over Los Angeles on Feb. 4, with former Laker Brandon Ingram scoring 35 points. It remains Ingram’s highest-scoring game since he returned from a two-month absence caused by a left big toe contusion.

The Lakers returned home from that defeat and saw LeBron James set the NBA’s all-time scoring record three days later. But the loss at New Orleans also started a run in which Los Angeles has dropped four of five games, including a 127-115 defeat at Portland on Monday.

Now the Lakers and Pelicans will meet in their last game before the All-Star break.

The Pelicans will enter off a 103-100 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday that ended their six-game road losing streak. Ingram had 34 points on 14-of-24 shooting as CJ McCollum missed the game with a sprained right ankle.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault heaped praise on the Pelicans’ level of play, calling them more “physical” and “alert” than his own team as New Orleans looks ready to climb up the Western Conference standings again.

The biggest reason for the charge forward has been the return of Ingram, who has averaged 25.1 points per game in the eight games he has been back on the floor.

The Lakers have been without James for the past three games because of a left ankle injury. As he pushed toward Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record, James averaged 33.9 points over his past 17 contests. He is scoring 30.2 points per game on the season.

Anthony Davis had 19 points and 20 rebounds against the Trail Blazers, but the Lakers had no answer for Damian Lillard, who scored 40 points. Portland led by as many as 27 points and hit 23 3-pointers in the game, 17 of them in the first half.

Aside from Davis, the Lakers got 22 points from Malik Beasley, 16 points from D’Angelo Russell and 13 points from Troy Brown Jr.

Los Angeles doesn’t necessarily have a lot of time to ease into a flow. The Lakers are in 13th place in the 15-team Western Conference, ahead of just the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets, but they are still within touching distance of the final play-in tournament spot.

NBA Preview: Dallas Mavericks (31-28) at Denver Nuggets (40-18)

0

Not having Jamal Murray or Aaron Gordon available could give the Denver Nuggets some worry when facing the Dallas Mavericks, but history provides comfort.

Murray, Gordon and Nikola Jokic missed a game at Dallas on Nov. 20 and Denver pulled out a 98-97 win that night. The Mavericks got revenge with a one-point win against the Nuggets on Dec. 6, and they can win the four-game season series when the teams meet in Denver on Wednesday night.

Murray has missed five games with right knee inflammation, which coach Michael Malone said might be a result of compensating for his surgically repaired left knee. The Nuggets don’t think the injury is too serious but have kept him out of the lineup out of caution.

Murray and Gordon are both formally listed as questionable for Wednesday, but with the All-Star break coming up this weekend, it’s likely that Murray sits to give him more than three weeks to settle down his knee.

Gordon has missed two games with a left rib contusion, and he has battled a sore shoulder most of the season.

Denver has learned to play without its second- and third-leading scorers. The Nuggets won at Charlotte on Saturday and beat the Heat in Miami on Monday night to complete a 2-1 road trip. They sit atop the Western Conference and are guaranteed to hold that spot after Wednesday.

Denver got good play from its bench players as well as another near triple-double from Nikola Jokic (27 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists) in the 112-108 win over the Heat.

The Nuggets will get their first and — barring a postseason meeting — only look at the new-look Mavericks since they acquired Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets. Dallas has lost both games with Luka Doncic and Irving in the lineup but has time to figure out the chemistry.

The Mavericks seemed to find something in a three-point loss to Minnesota on Monday night. Doncic scored 33 points and Irving had 36, with 26 coming in the fourth quarter. The Mavericks had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but Irving turned it over.

The Mavericks could be getting more talent soon, but not in time to face Jokic. ESPN reported Monday night that LaMarcus Aldridge was working out for Dallas on Tuesday. Aldridge, a seven-time All-Star, hasn’t played this season after averaging 12.9 points and 5.5 rebounds in 47 games for Brooklyn last year.

If Aldridge signs with the Mavericks, he has the chance to provide depth and another defensive presence in the frontcourt. Dallas traded away one of its best defenders, Dorian Finney-Smith, to the Nets in the deal that brought Irving to the team.

Veteran guard Reggie Jackson signed with the Nuggets on Tuesday after being bought out by the Charlotte Hornets, who acquired him from the Los Angeles Clippers at the trade deadline.

NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons (15-43) at Boston Celtics (41-17)

0

Teams at opposite ends of the NBA’s Eastern Conference standings will face each other Wednesday night when the Detroit Pistons visit the Boston Celtics in the final game before the All-Star break for both teams.

The Celtics are at the top of the standings, one-half game ahead of Milwaukee following Tuesday night’s 131-125 overtime loss to the Bucks. The Pistons are at the bottom of the conference and enter Wednesday’s matchup one-half game behind Charlotte.

Boston’s four-game winning streak ended with the loss at Milwaukee. Jayson Tatum (illness) didn’t make the trip to Milwaukee and Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said Tatum is unlikely to play against the Pistons.

Tatum was one of four Boston starters who didn’t suit up against Milwaukee. The Celtics were also missing Jaylen Brown (facial fracture), Marcus Smart (ankle) and Al Horford (knee). Boston’s starting lineup was Derrick White, Sam Hauser, Mike Muscala, Grant Williams and Blake Griffin.

White led the Celtics with 27 points and 12 assists. Malcolm Brogdon came off the bench to score 26, and Williams finished with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Tatum (30.5 ppg) and Brown (26.5 ppg) are Boston’s leading scorers. Tatum is also the team’s top rebounder (8.6).

Detroit, which acquired center James Wiseman from Golden State last week, is coming off Sunday’s 119-118 road loss to Toronto. Bojan Bogdanovic led the Pistons with 33 points in the loss. Alec Burks had 21 while Hamidou Diallo and Jaden Ivey each finished with 18. Bogdanovic leads the team in scoring (21.7 ppg).

Detroit committed 16 turnovers in the loss.

The Pistons, who beat San Antonio in double overtime Friday, haven’t won back-to-back games since they beat Denver and Utah on Nov. 22-23.

Detroit center Jalen Duren injured his right ankle in the second quarter of the loss to Toronto, but started the second half and finished the game with six points in 21 minutes. The rookie scored a career-high 30 points in Friday’s win against San Antonio. He is also averaging a team-high 8.8 rebounds per game.

Boston beat Detroit in each of the three previous meetings this season and would complete the season sweep with a win.

NBA Preview: Houston Rockets (13-44) at Oklahoma City Thunder (27-29)

0

Despite another missed opportunity to climb back to .500, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s wire-to-wire loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday offered a glimpse of their tenacity.

The Thunder trailed by as many as 20 points before clawing to within one possession in the waning moments of that 103-100 loss. It marked a seventh consecutive loss for the Thunder when facing an opportunity to square their record, and should the Thunder defeat the visiting Houston Rockets on Wednesday, they will have to wait until after the All-Star Game for another shot to reach .500 for the first time since Nov. 3.

The Thunder, who had won three of four prior to Monday’s setback against the Pelicans, nonetheless remain in the chase for a play-in tournament spot. Oklahoma City entered Tuesday one game in the loss column behind the Utah Jazz for 10th place in the Western Conference.

While the Thunder have struggled to get over the hump record-wise, their season-long development appears to be trending toward a potential playoff berth. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earned his first All-Star Game nod, Josh Giddey continues to show signs as one of the most versatile guards in the league and rookie Jalen Williams has been a revelation.

The Rockets have dropped six consecutive games since defeating the Thunder at home 112-106 on Feb. 1. The trade deadline saw Houston ship out three members of its rotation in Eric Gordon, Garrison Mathews and Bruno Fernando, opening the door for an already young team to get even younger. The Rockets’ current rotation features only two players — forwards Jae’Sean Tate and Kenyon Martin Jr. — who have completed at least two seasons in the NBA.

Losing Gordon, whose 85 3-pointers ranked fourth on the team, makes an already dismal 3-point shooting team even worse. The Rockets are 29th in the NBA with a 32.7 percent from behind the arc. They missed 18 of 24 3-pointers in their 123-104 road loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, and they remain without guard Kevin Porter Jr., who has been sidelined since mid-January with a foot injury and whose shot-creation ability is sorely missed.

NBA Preview: Utah Jazz (29-30) at Memphis Grizzlies (34-22)

0

Following a 119-109 road loss to the Boston Celtics, the Memphis Grizzlies will return home Wednesday to face a high-powered Utah Jazz team that’s scored at least 100 points in 26 straight games.

The Grizzlies are 23-5 at home as opposed to 11-17 on the road. After the Portland Trail Blazers snapped their eight-game home winning streak on Feb. 1, Memphis will look to make it three consecutive victories in the friendly confines against the Jazz.

Ja Morant is having an MVP-type season for Memphis. He’s averaging 27.5 points, 8.3 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game. Desmond Bane (21.4 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 4.2 apg) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (16.7 ppg, 6.6 rpg) are also having outstanding seasons.

The Grizzlies also added Luke Kennard from the Los Angeles Clippers at the trade deadline. A 42.7 percent 3-point shooter for his career, Kennard scored just four points in his team debut against Boston.

Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins is still planning out how to work him in.

Steven Adams (knee) will miss his 11th straight game, and the Grizzlies have sorely missed the big man’s production.

Brandon Clarke (10.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg), Santi Aldama (9.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and Xavier Tillman (5.2 ppg, 3.9 rpg) have supplied Memphis with solid production in the paint with Adams out.

But the Grizzlies have had trouble containing the NBA’s best big men with their starting center on the shelf. And that could be the case once again dealing with Utah center Lauri Markkanen.

Markkanen is averaging 24.9 points and 8.6 rebounds and is fresh off a double-double (29 points, 11 rebounds) in a 123-117 win over the Indiana Pacers. He hit four free throws in the final 14.2 seconds to secure the win for the Jazz.

Jordan Clarkson also scored 29 in the win over the Pacers and enters Wednesday’s game averaging 21.1 points, 4.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. He hit a clutch 3-pointer and another important jumper in the waning moments against Indiana, which helped the team earn its second road victory in its last three games.

In addition to Markkanen and Clarkson, Collin Sexton (14.6 ppg, 2.9 apg) and Kelly Olynyk (11.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg) are talented scorers who can make game-changing plays at any time.

With Adams out for Memphis, the combination of Markkanen and rookie Walker Kessler (8.2 ppg, 7.6 rpg) could pose major problems for the Grizzlies in the paint.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat (32-26) at Brooklyn Nets (33-24)

0

Avoiding the play-in round is a priority for any team, and the outcome of the final contest before the All-Star break could determine whether the Brooklyn Nets or Miami Heat end up in that situation.

Both teams are currently clear of the play-in round, but a slump could easily knock them down in the Eastern Conference standings as the Nets look to increase their hold on fifth place when they host the sixth-place Heat on Wednesday night.

Brooklyn is clear of the play-in game mostly because of what it achieved between Dec. 7 and Jan. 8 when it went on a 12-game winning streak and won 14 of 15. The last of those games was a 102-101 win at Miami on Jan. 8 when Kevin Durant sprained his right knee while colliding with Jimmy Butler during the third quarter.

The Nets were 27-13 when Durant was injured and second in the East with a one-game deficit behind the Boston Celtics. Brooklyn is 6-11 in the 17 games since and has dropped to fifth but 3 1/2 games behind fourth-place Cleveland entering Tuesday’s action.

During Brooklyn’s 15-game tear, it scored at least 120 points eight times but since then it has topped 120 only six times and none while losing four of its past five games. The recent slide comes amidst the transformation of a roster that featured Durant and Kyrie Irving to newcomers Spencer Dinwiddie, Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith, who were obtained when the stars sought trades from Brooklyn.

The Nets began their new era with a 116-105 win over Chicago on Thursday but struggled offensively in their next two games. After scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter of a 101-98 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday, Brooklyn scored 45 points after halftime and was outscored 44-26 over the final 14-plus minutes of Monday’s 124-106 loss to the host New York Knicks.

Dinwiddie scored 28 points but 20 were in Brooklyn’s 61-point opening half. Johnson added 14 but Bridges was held to seven after getting 23 Saturday.

Miami’s roster situation is not about adding new pieces but health. The Heat are 1 1/2 games behind the Nets and a half-game up on seventh-place New York enetering Tuesday.

Miami had 10 players available Monday when it dropped to 20-12 in games decided by five or fewer points in a 112-108 home loss to the Denver Nuggets. Besides missing Kyle Lowry (sore left knee) and Victor Oladipo (ankle), the Heat were without Tyler Herro due to a knee bruise that may prevent him from suiting up Wednesday.

Butler scored 24 points and Max Strus finished with 23. Bam Adebayo added 19 but his two rebounds were a season-low and may have contributed to Miami allowing 58 points in the paint after entering Monday allowing 44.9 points inside.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks (32-27) at Atlanta Hawks (29-29)

0

The New York Knicks will look for their fifth victory in six games when they travel to play the Atlanta Hawks, the team directly behind them in the Eastern Conference, on Wednesday in the final game before the All-Star break.

The Knicks are seventh in the Eastern Conference and hold a 2½-game lead over the Hawks. But Atlanta has won two of three meetings against the Knicks this season and could secure the tiebreaker against New York with a victory. A win by New York would provide further distance from the Hawks and pull it closer to avoiding the play-in tournament.

The Knicks defeated the Brooklyn Nets 124-106 on Monday and have won seven of their last 11. The Hawks are coming off a disappointing 144-138 loss at Charlotte on Monday. Charlotte, which had lost seven straight and has only 16 wins, beat Atlanta for the third time.

In addition to the stellar play of All-Star Julius Randle (24.7 points, 10.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists), the Knicks continue to get an outstanding effort from Jalen Brunson (23.9 points, 6.2 assists). Brunson, who is not on the All-Star roster, had 40 points in the win over Brooklyn.

Randle has totaled 66 points and 26 rebounds in the last two meetings with Atlanta.

New York’s acquisition of Josh Hart from Portland is already paying dividends. Hart, who averages 9.9 points and 8.1 rebounds, scored a season-high 27 against the Nets.

Atlanta got 12 points and five rebounds from Saddiq Bey in his debut with the team. Bey got the start when John Collins missed the game with a hip flexor injury. Bey was acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline.

The Atlanta defense struggled against a Charlotte club that scored a season-high 144 points — 32.2 above its season average — and made 20 3-pointers.

NBA Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers (38-22) at Philadelphia Sixer (37-19)

0

The red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers would probably rather not see the league halt action for the All-Star break.

Cleveland will look for its eighth consecutive victory when it visits the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.

Since falling 100-97 to the Miami Heat on Jan. 31, the Cavaliers have defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, New Orleans Pelicans, Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs.

Donovan Mitchell led the way with a stellar 41-point performance in a 117-109 win over the Spurs on Monday.

But Mitchell was far from satisfied with the victory.

Mitchell paused and continued with the criticism after the game which sent the Spurs reeling to their 13th consecutive loss.

Jarrett Allen added 17 points and 11 rebounds, Darius Garland chipped in 16 points and seven assists and Evan Mobley had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Veteran guard Danny Green, who was drafted by the Cavaliers in 2009, is expected to sign with the team once he clears waivers. The Houston Rockets waived Green after a trade deadline deal.

The Sixers have also been playing well and will look for their fourth straight win heading into the break.

Philadelphia had little trouble dispatching the Rockets 123-104 on Monday behind James Harden’s 28 points and 10 assists. Tyrese Maxey added 26 points, six assists and five rebounds off the bench and Joel Embiid scored 23 points.

After a bit of a scoring slump, Maxey has regained his form and was aggressive from the start on both ends.

Newly acquired Jalen McDaniels contributed eight points and five rebounds in his first game in front of the Sixers’ fans.

The Sixers signed center Dewayne Dedmon and he’s expected to be available to face the Cavaliers. The 7-footer was previously with the Miami Heat.
