  • Washington has not lost three-straight regulation games this season.

Team Discipline

  • The Capitals have taken 189 penalties through 56 games this season, the sixth-lowest total in the NHL.
  • On average, the Capitals are shorthanded 2.66 times per game, which is the third-lowest rate in the League.
  • Washington’s +28 net penalty differential ranks second in the NHL.

PK Prowess

  • The Capitals have killed off 17 of 20 opposing power plays (85.0 percent) over their last 11 games, dating back to Jan. 16.
  • The Capitals’ 81.2 penalty kill percentage this season ranks ninth in the NHL, through games played Feb. 14.
  • Per Natural Stat Trick, the Capitals have allowed the fourth-fewest shots on goal (217) while shorthanded this season.
  • Trevor van Riemsdyk (2:26) and Nick Jensen (2:25), who lead the Capitals in shorthanded ice time per game this season, also pace Washington in blocked shots, with van Riemsdyk’s 121 blocked shots ranking tied for seventh in the NHL and Jensen’s 100 ranking 26th, through games played Feb. 14.

WBB-FCS: Wofford Terriers (17-7) at East Tennessee State Buccaneers (19-7)

With four regular season games remaining, the ETSU women’s basketball team will begin its final home stand on Thursday as the Bucs host Wofford at 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym.

Thursday’s game will pit two of the top teams in the Southern Conference against each other, as Wofford enters 17-7 overall and is tied atop the league standings with a 7-3 conference record. The Bucs are 19-7 overall and one game back at 6-4 in conference play.

ABOUT THE BUCS

  • ETSU has a 19-7 overall record and are 6-4 in league play.
  • The Bucs have won six of the last seven games, including a pair of wins last week at Samford and Mercer. The wins marked ETSU’s first-ever road swing sweep of the Bulldogs and Bears.
  • Yesterday, sophomore Kendall Folley (Lebanon, Ohio) was named Southern Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season. Folley averaged 20.0 points over the two games last week, including a career-high 28 points at Samford.
  • ETSU broke the school record last week for best win improvement from season-to-season, going from six wins last season to 19 already this season. The 13-win improvement broke the previous school record of 12 set in the 2014-15 season.
  • ETSU is also four wins away from tying the all-time school record for single season wins, set in 2009-10 with a 23-9 record. That season is also tied with two others for the fewest losses in a season all-time (since expanding the schedule to over 15 games in 1974-75). There are four regular season games remaining.
  • ETSU has enjoyed nation’s current best turnaround this season under first year Buccaneer head coach Brenda Mock Brown. Coach Mock also had one of the most storied turnarounds of all-time at UNC Asheville in 2016, improving by 16 games to rank fifth all-time in NCAA D1 Women’s Basketball history.
  • ETSU’s 13-win improvement ranks atop the nation ahead of both Illinois and UIC at 12 games, followed by Virginia with a 10-win improvement. Last year’s most improved team was LSU with a 12 game improvement (17 more wins with 10 more opportunities).
  • Since the start of the program in 1968, ETSU has never had a season that brought four separate four-game win streaks (or longer). ETSU enjoyed two four-game win streaks to start 8-2 overall, then had a five-game win streak to improve to 13-3. The most recent win streak of four brought ETSU’s record to 17-6. The last time ETSU had three such streaks was the 2014-15 season that produced a 21-12 overall record. Two wins this weekend would make it five such win streaks.
  • For the last nine weeks, ETSU has either received votes or been ranked in the College Insider Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. This week, the Bucs were outside the Top 25 but received 21 votes to sit six spots out.
  • The Bucs finished non-conference play with a 13-3 record — the best non-conference finish in modern era program history. That era began when the SoCon began sponsoring a women’s basketball championship in 1983-84 — the same season ETSU finished with 11 non-conference wins.
  • The Bucs are averaging 62.8 points per game, while ranking 16th in the nation with just 54.7 points allowed per game. The Bucs also rank 20th in the nation in offensive rebounding with 14.7 per game.
  • Graduate guard Jiselle Thomas (Norwalk, Ohio) leads the Bucs with 15.2 points per game to rank tied for fifth in the league. She has scored in double figures in 21 of her 26 games. She also has five games where she scored 20 or more points, and ETSU is 5-0 in those games.
  • Sophomore Nevaeh Brown (Charlotte, N.C.) is averaging 11.1 PPG and has scored in double figures in 17 of her 23 appearances, including 12 in the last outing at Mercer.
  • This season, ETSU in on track for its first winning campaign since 2018, where the team finished 20-13 overall, 11-3 in the SoCon and made an appearance in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). ETSU has made three NCAA tournament appearances all-time (2008, 2009, 2010) and four WNIT appearances (1995, 2006, 2015, 2018).

ABOUT THE TERRIERS

  • Wofford enters with a 17-7 record and a 7-3 mark in league play.
  • ETSU and Wofford are the only two teams in the SoCon with less than 10 overall losses.
  • The Terriers have won four of the last five games since their last meeting with ETSU, including an 83-62 win over Western Carolina this past Saturday in Spartanburg.
  • Wofford is 5-2 in games decided by five points or less and 6-3 in games decided by 10 or less.
  • The Terriers have the highest scoring offense in the SoCon with 70.4 PPG, ahead of Samford at 67.5. Wofford gives up 65.0 PPG defensively for a +5.4 margin, ranking second behind ETSU’s +8.1 margin.
  • Wofford also has the best assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1) and turnover margin (+5.88) in the SoCon.
  • Rachael Rose leads the Terriers in every major category, including scoring (16.0 PPG), rebounding (5.8 RPG) and assists (4.2 APG). She is second in the league in scoring and assists while ranking 11th in rebounding.
  • Jackie Carman is also a key player for Wofford with 15.2 PPG to rank fifth in the league — tied with ETSU’s Jiselle Thomas.
  • The Terriers are led by Jimmy Garrity, who has a 101-99 record over seven seasons at Wofford. His 100th win came at Furman earlier this month.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Thursday marks the 38th all-time meeting.
  • ETSU has a 25-12 advantage in the series with 12 home wins and 13 road wins.
  • ETSU won the last meeting inside Brooks Gym, 70-64, to snap an eight-game skid in games against Wofford.
  • The Bucs dominated the last meeting in Spartanburg with a 75-58 win on Jan. 21.

MBB-FBS: California Golden Bears (3-22) at USC Trojans (17-8)

On February 16, at 7:00 p.m., the USC Trojans (17-8, 9-5) will play the California Golden Bears (3-22, 2-12) at the Galen Center. The game was originally scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. Alex Faust and Casey Jacobsen will be the game’s announcers on FS1.

The last three seasons, USC has won a school-record 73 games (22 in 2020, 25 in 2021, and 26 in 2022). 71 wins in three consecutive seasons was the previous school record. The school record for most consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins, set from 2016 to 2018, is also equal to the three seasons with 20 or more wins.

WINNING WAYS: USC’s 73 wins over the previous three seasons ranked third among Power 6 basketball programs, behind only Kansas (83 wins) and Baylor (81 wins), which won the NCAA title last year. Additionally, USC ranked 13th out of all Power 6 conference teams with 160 wins over the previous seven seasons.

Enfield has won 200th as head coach of the USC program. In his tenth season at USC, Andy Enfield has a record of 200-126. He won his 200th game against Washington on February 4. Enfield’s win total is fourth on USC’s all-time wins list, behind only Forrest Twogood (251 wins), Bob Boyd (216 wins), and Sam Barry (260 wins). Enfield has a 241-154 record, including his two seasons as head coach at FGCU (2012-13).

FACING CALIFORNIA — The California Golden Bears are 3-22 and 2-12, having lost to Arizona State in overtime 70-62 on Feb. 11 at home. In its last nine games, California has lost. Devin Askew, a junior guard, scores the most for California, averaging 15.5 points per game. On November 30, USC defeated California 66-51 in the Bay Area to extend its winning streak against the Golden Bears to nine games. USC is 131-136* behind in the series all-time, with one loss that was overturned by a NCAA penalty (original record 132-136).

STANFORD ON DECK — On February 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Galen Center, USC will play the Stanford Cardinal (11-14, 5-9). Stanford defeated then-No. 1 Stanford 88-79 at home. Arizona on February 11 In their last eight games, the Cardinal have won six. Spencer Jones, a senior forward, is Stanford’s leading scorer with 13.7 points per game. Stanford and USC have never met before this season. Last season, USC suffered defeats of 64-61 at home and 75-69 at Stanford. USC is 128-129 behind in the series all-time (one win was canceled due to a NCAA penalty, the previous record was 129-129).

LET’S GET STARTED WITH THE DEFENSE: On November 30, USC held California to a 27.7 percent shooting percentage, its lowest mark since holding Stanford to a 25.4 percent shooting percentage on March 3, 2021. Oregon was the first team this season to make more than 50% of its shots against USC, making 53.8% of its attempts. This season, USC has prevented its opponents from shooting over 40% in 14 of its 25 games. This season, USC is holding its opponents to a 39.1 shooting percentage—tenth in the nation. USC’s defense has held opponents to a 3rd-place 38.9 field goal percentage over the past four seasons.

LEADERS OF THE PAC: USC has finished third among Pac-12 teams in wins during the regular season for the past six seasons (since the 2017-18 season). Through games on Feb. 12, USC is 69-39, Arizona is 72-37, and UCLA is 72-35 in that stretch. Oregon (67-40) and Colorado (60-49) would come in next.

ENJOYING THE HOME COOKING: This season, USC is 12-1 at the Galen Center, winning the first 12 games and losing to FGCU on Nov. 7. Since the Trojans won their first 15 games at the Galen Center in the 2015-16 season, USC’s 12-game home winning streak is the longest in a single season.

PETERSON GIVING THE ASSIST: With 113 assists, guard Drew Peterson leads the Pac-12 and leads USC. Peterson and Penn State’s Jalen Pickett are the only Power 6 players this season to average at least 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. In each game, Peterson is averaging 13.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. In his second game as a Trojan, Peterson failed to record a rebound in the game against Oregon, snapping an 88-game streak in which he had at least one. On Feb. 11, he scored eight rebounds against Oregon State.

JEKYLL & HYDE FROM THE OUTSIDE — In its eighth game this season, USC made at least 38% of its 3-point attempts against Washington State on February 2. USC has made 45.5 percent of its 3-pointers (75-for-165) in those eight games, while it has averaged 23.2 percent (65-for-280) from beyond the arc in the other 17 games. At Oregon State on Feb. 11, USC made just one of 14 three-point attempts (.071), its lowest three-point shooting performance since Andy Enfield’s time as head coach.

When fully loaded, USC has a 5-1 record in games where it has access to the entire roster. That stretch includes three victories over Pac-12 teams in the top five. When the entire roster was available, USC lost to Arizona, which has a record of 32-1 in its last 33 home games. The Trojans’ first 16 games of the season were missed by forward Vincent Iwuchukwu, while guard Reese Dixon-Waters (left foot) and forward Joshua Morgan (right ankle) were both injured against Washington State on Feb. 2.

Toeing the line: On Jan. 21 against Arizona State, USC made all 14 of its free throw attempts, which tied for the third most in school history for a game without a missed free throw. USC ended a streak of five games in a row in which it shot at least 70% from the charity stripe on Jan. 19 against Arizona. This was USC’s longest such streak since an eight-game stretch during the 2016-17 season. This season, USC has made 74.0 percent of its free throws, its highest team FT percentage since the 2017 team made 74.1 percent. In the previous 15 seasons, USC’s free throw percentage was greater than 70% twice per season.

WBB-D2: Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm (7-16) at Henderson State Reddies (14-10)

On Thursday, February 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center, Henderson State will attempt to sweep Southeastern Oklahoma State to complete the season sweep.

Reddies Report Henderson defeated the Tigers 82-72 in the second Battle of the Ravine to exact revenge on Ouachita Baptist. With 30 points and six rebounds, the Reddies’ Ashley Farrar led the way.

Henderson has now secured a spot in the GAC Tournament following its 11th league victory over OUA. One of the four teams that have already qualified for the tournament is HSU. Harding, Arkansas Tech, and Southern Nazarene are the other three teams.

The Reddies’ bench player of choice in the last six games has been JJ Eddens. The native of Luther, Oklahoma, went 5-8 and scored 11 points in 21 minutes of action against Ouachita Baptist. Eddens has been shooting 53.1% from the field and scoring 6.2 points per game over the last six games.

The Reddies found their range from deep against OUA after struggling from the three-point line against Northwestern Oklahoma State. Henderson had multiple players with three treys and shot 11-20 from beyond the arc. Farrar started 0-3 from beyond the arc but then hit three triples in a row, while Abbie Jiles shot 3-3 from deep. Sonni Martin finished with a record of 3-4 and scored twice in the fourth period with treys.

HSU has a 15-12 head-to-head advantage over Southeastern Oklahoma State after winning the last three games against them. In the first encounter, Henderson defeated SE 61-52 in the Bloomer Sullivan Arena, defeating the Savage Storm. In the victory, Farrar recorded a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

SCOUTING SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE Prior to their 60-47 loss to East Central in their most recent matchup, the Savage Storm had won three games in a row. With a conference record of 5-13 and an overall record of 7-16, Southeastern Oklahoma State is last in the GAC standings.

Caitlin Kobiske led SE during the three-game winning streak. For her performance against Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello, she was named GAC Player of the Week and D2 National Player of the Week. In the two games, Kobiske shot 71.4 percent from the floor and scored 81 points. The native of Keller, Texas, leads SE in scoring with an average of 16.8 points per game.

Briley Moon, SE’s second-leading scorer with 15.3 points per game, is SE’s top three-point shooter with 44 triples this season, shooting 38.9% from beyond the arc.

MBB-D2: Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm (15-8) at Henderson State Reddies (11-13)

Henderson State will hope to continue this winning streak into Thursday’s home game against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Yesterday, Henderson State defeated Ouachita Baptist for the third time in a row. Reddies Report Henderson fell behind by three with 2:58 remaining in the second half of Tuesday’s matchup against the Tigers. However, Malik Riddle scored six straight points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:28 remaining in regulation, to lift HSU over its archrival, 62-59. Tip-off from inside the Duke Wells Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. With 13 points and 11 rebounds, Tomislav Miholjcic scored his fifth double-double of the season.

Alvin Miles has scored 11 or more points in five consecutive games and has provided at least five assists in four of the last five games. Miles’ performance at the free-throw line over the past month has been even more impressive. The native of Memphis, Tennessee, has now made 31 consecutive free throws, with his last miss coming on Jan. 14 against Southwestern Oklahoma State. He went 4-for-4 at the charity stripe against Ouachita Baptist.

With his 120 victories against the Tigers on Tuesday, head coach Jimmy Elgas tied Rand Chappell for second place in program history. If he wins on Thursday, he would be second only to Don Dyer, who won 316 games from 1963 to 1978 on Henderson’s basketball court.

With a record of 8-10, Henderson St. and Ouachita Baptist are currently tied for seventh in conference play and one game behind fifth in the GAC standings. Henderson owns the tiebreaker against all of the teams HSU will be competing against for those final two spots, so the Reddies have a lot riding on it. Additionally, two of the red and gray’s final four opponents are currently playing at or below.500 in league play.

In the previous meeting between HSU and Southeastern Oklahoma State, which took place in Arkadelphia, the Reddies prevailed 84-73 because they shot 52.3% (34-45) from the field. In fact, Henderson has only lost to the Savage Storm once inside the Duke Wells Center during Elgas’ eight years as the program’s head coach, on February 28, 2019.

SCOUTING SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE Southeastern Oklahoma State has lost two of their last three games, all at home, after a six-game winning streak that included a victory over Henderson State. The most recent matchup saw SE fall 69-63 to East Central, whose Savage Storm made just three three-pointers on 23 attempts.

With a victory over the Reddies on Thursday, Southeastern, which is 12-6 in conference play, will secure a spot in the upcoming GAC Tournament. Prior to this season, the Savage Storm participated in five postseason conference tournaments in a row. The last time SE was absent from the end-of-year tournament was in 2016-17.

With an average of 85.3 points per game, Southeastern is still the conference’s top scoring offense by a whopping eight points, ranking 15th in NCAA Division II. SE’s GAC-leading 10.5 made three-pointers per game, which also ranks 15th in DII, contribute significantly to those points. The Savage Storm are 10-3 in 23 games when they have made nine or more three-pointers. They are 5-5 when they make less. HSU allows opponents to score 8.6 triples per game on the year.

NHL Morning Skate – Feb. 16, 2023

Connor Ingram had 47 saves against the club that selected him in the NHL Draft to record the first shutout of his NHL career.

William Nylander notched three points and Auston Matthews scored the game-winning goal in his return to the Maple Leafs’ lineup as Toronto took back second place in the Atlantic Division.

* Thursday’s slate features the Blues entertaining the Devils at Enterprise Center on ESPN as well as the Hurricanes and Capitals contesting their final games before squaring off outdoors in the 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series.

INGRAM ACHIEVES NHL-FIRST WITH 47-SAVE SHUTOUT
Connor Ingram made 47 saves in his first career shutout to achieve an NHL-first and help the Coyotes extend their point streak to seven contests (4-0-3) – their longest since a seven-game run in 2015-16 (5-0-2 from Dec. 31, 2015–Jan. 14, 2016).

Ingram’s 47 saves marked the most on record by a goaltender in their first career shutout (since 1955-56 when shots on goal began being tracked), besting his partner Karel Vejmelka (46 saves on Nov. 29, 2021 w/ ARI) and Dan Bouchard (46 saves on Dec. 13, 1972 w/ AFM). Ingram made the second-most saves in a shutout in Coyotes/Jets history behind Mike Smith (54 on April 3, 2012).

* The journey toIngram’s first NHL shutout included a period of time when he didn’t know if he would play hockey again – on Jan. 24, 2021, a day he says changed his life, Ingram went to the rink to ask for help before voluntarily entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program and through the help of a therapist was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. Ingram says therapy saved his life and is now a mental health advocate who hopes that being open with his diagnosis can help others.

NYLANDER’S EARLY GOAL HELPS TORONTO TACK ON ANOTHER HOME WIN
William Nylander (1-2—3) opened the scoring just nine seconds into the game and Auston Matthews (1-1—2) recorded his 150th career multi-point outing in his return to the lineup as the Maple Leafs (33-14-8, 74 points) beat the Blackhawks to reclaim second place in the Atlantic Division. Toronto earned its 21st home win of 2022-23, which trails only Boston (22) for the most among all teams.

* Nylander, who matched the fastest game-opening goal by a player this season (Carl Grundstrom: 0:09 on Nov. 12, 2022), hit the 30-goal mark for a second straight year and for the third time in his last four campaigns. Matthews recorded the 50th game-winning goal of his NHL career and tied Ron Ellis for fourth place on the franchise’s all-time list.

McDAVID MOVING WITHIN ONE POINT OF 100 FEATURED IN LIVE UPDATES
Wednesday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured more notes from the six-game slate, including League scoring leader Connor McDavid (42-57—99 in 55 GP) moving within one point of 100 on the season as the Oilers fell to the Red Wings at Rogers Place. Some other highlights include:

Artemi Panarin (2-1—3) followed up his 4-1—5 outing on Feb. 11 with three points to lead the Rangers to their sixth straight victory. Panarin trailed only Jean Ratelle (4-6—10 from Jan. 5-9, 1972) and Mark Pavelich (6-3—9 from Feb. 20-23, 1983) for the most points over a two-game span in franchise history.

* Rasmus Dahlin (45-173—218 in 329 GP) had two first-period helpers to reach 173 career assists and leapfrog former Buffalo blueliner Doug Bodger (42-172—214 in 360 GP) for sole possession of the eighth most by an NHL defenseman before age 23.

Nathan MacKinnon (1-1—2) scored the 48th game-winning goal of his NHL career to move past Michel Goulet (47) for sole possession of third place on the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise’s all-time list.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (32-28) at Phoenix Suns (32-27)

0

Following their matchup on Thursday in downtown Phoenix, both the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns will welcome the All-Star break.

Both teams, who haven’t quite lived up to internal expectations, are expected to have attention-grabbing stretch drives, although the Suns are much better after going 1-9 until the middle of January.

The next thing Phoenix needs to do is get over the All-Star break so that new acquisition Kevin Durant can make his team debut once he recovers from a right knee injury. Paul George and Kawhi Leonard will both be released by the Clippers for the remainder of the season.

The Suns saw TJ Warren (five points in seven minutes) make his return to the team in Tuesday’s 120-109 home victory over the Sacramento Kings after he was acquired in a trade last week. Both teams have also been incorporating new players into the mix.

When Durant was introduced in the third quarter, he was seen on the bench dressed in street clothes and received a standing ovation.

Devin Booker scored 32 points in his third game back from a groin strain, so Durant had to like what he saw. Chris Paul had a season-high 19 assists, and Deandre Ayton scored 29 points. Since that 10-game skid last month, the Suns have won five of their last six games and are now 11-3.

Tyronn Lue, the head coach of the Clippers, wanted to take it easy on Leonard and George before the break, but he had to change the plan after losing to the Golden State Warriors twice in a row on Tuesday. His change made all the difference.

As a result of a 44-point third quarter, the Clippers defeated the Warriors 134-124. Leonard scored 33 points in 34 minutes, George added 20 points and eight assists in 32 minutes, and George had eight rebounds.

Mason Plumlee scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in 17 minutes, Eric Gordon scored seven points and had three assists in 22 minutes, and Bones Hyland scored six points in 16 minutes for Los Angeles.

Lue will need to make a quick assessment of how to incorporate his newest players into the mix with 22 regular-season games remaining.

NBA Preview: Washington Wizards (27-30) at Minnesota Timberwolves (31-29)

0

When the Washington Wizards play the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday in Minneapolis, Kristaps Porzingis and the team hope to continue their explosive play.

In Washington’s 126-101 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday, Porzingis had 28 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. The victory was the Wizards’ sixth in their last eight on the road and their ninth in their last 13 overall.

Porzingis reached 20 points for the 14th time in his last 19 games by connecting on 10 of 15 shots from the floor and all seven attempts from the foul line. In his most recent encounter with the Timberwolves, Washington defeated them 142-127 on Nov. 28, and he set a new standard by scoring a career-high 41 points.

Minnesota probably has a different reason for remembering that game. Karl-Anthony Towns, a three-time All-Star, needed assistance to leave the court after suffering an injury to his right calf in the third quarter. He has not yet resumed playing the game.

After missing four games due to a left ankle sprain, Kyle Kuzma scored 33 points on Tuesday in his return to the game after scoring 23 points in the previous encounter with the Timberwolves.

The Wizards shot 51.5% from three-point range (17 of 33) thanks to Kuzma’s six of ten attempts.

Bradley Beal was quick to credit his team’s adjustments on defense, which helped turn the tide on Tuesday, despite Washington’s effective offensive performance.

On Thursday, the Wizards’ primary concern in this regard will be Anthony Edwards, who is currently in his third season after being selected with the top overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and has posted career-best statistics in a number of categories.

Edwards, who is making his first All-Star team, is averaging 24.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Additionally, he is shooting 46.5% from the floor and 36.6% from three-point range.

The Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Dallas Mavericks 124-121 on Monday thanks to 32 points from Edwards. The Timberwolves nearly lost a 26-point lead but held on to win.

To keep Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic, and the Mavericks at bay, Minnesota needed to make one last defensive stand.

Monday, Rudy Gobert scored 21 points and hit all nine of his shots. In addition, he grabbed 14 rebounds for Minnesota, which has lost and won its last nine games.
