NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons (15-46) at Charlotte Hornets (19-43)

0

With a four-game winning streak going into Monday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons, the Charlotte Hornets are one of the best teams in the NBA.

With the Pistons being the only Eastern Conference team with a worse record than Charlotte, the Hornets will test the role as favorite for Monday’s game, as only two teams had longer winning streaks going into Sunday.

Despite their four-game losing streak, the Pistons will face the Hornets for a portion of their rare success this season.

The Hornets returned to action after winning their final two games before the All-Star break, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night on the road and the Miami Heat on Saturday night at home, respectively.

The Hornets have benefited from Oubre’s return to action after he suffered a hand injury that sidelined him for nearly two months of the season. Since Mason Plumlee was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, rookie center Mark Williams has continued to rise to prominence.

Williams scored 18 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, both career highs, against the Heat. Since Alonzo Mourning in 1993, no Charlotte rookie had scored at least 15 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in a game.

LaMelo Ball, Williams’ point guard, has been working well together.

The Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic have both defeated Detroit by six points in consecutive games.

Marvin Bagley III, who hasn’t played since Jan. 2 because of a hand injury, could give the Pistons a boost of energy on Saturday. In the Toronto game, he scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds.

In February, the Pistons have only won two games. The first of those was a home victory over the Hornets on February 3 by a score of 118-112. Jaden Ivey scored 24 points, but that was only the second time in his last 14 games that the rookie guard has scored 20 points.

On December 14, Detroit also prevailed against Charlotte, winning 141-134 in overtime. In that game, Bagley only played ten minutes.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (33-29) at Denver Nuggets (42-19)

0

Despite having an off day on Saturday, the Los Angeles Clippers may feel more fatigued than the Denver Nuggets, who will be playing the second game of a back-to-back set.

This is because Los Angeles lost to the Kings on Friday night, 176-175, in the game that had the second most points scored in NBA history. Sacramento prevailed over the Clippers, who now face Denver on Sunday night, after two overtimes.

In a game that lacked competitiveness for the majority of the evening, the Nuggets lost to Memphis on Saturday night by a score of 112-94, snapping their four-game winning streak.

The Clippers and Nuggets will meet for the fourth and final time during the regular season on Sunday. This will be Los Angeles’ last chance to defeat the best team in the Western Conference. It also marks the return of the Nuggets’ No. 1 Bones Hyland. at the trade deadline earlier this month, the Clippers acquired one draft pick in 2021 in exchange for two second-round picks.

Hyland was Denver’s backup point guard, but he was cut from the rotation at the end of January, and his situation with Los Angeles hasn’t changed. He appeared in his first two games with his new team, but he was unable to participate in Friday’s game, Russell Westbrook’s first with the Clippers since signing earlier in the week.

Friday marked Westbrook’s debut with 17 points and 14 assists, but he also committed seven turnovers before fouling out.

Reggie Jackson will also play his first game against his former team on Sunday. Jackson was acquired by the Nuggets after the Hornets terminated his contract and traded to Charlotte at the last minute by Los Angeles. Jackson played his second game with his home team on Saturday.

In his debut, Jackson scored seven points, including a heave from beyond the halfcourt at the end of the third quarter in Thursday’s 115-109 victory over Cleveland. He was added to the roster by Denver because he is an experienced point guard who has played in multiple playoff games.

Despite dealing with a few injuries, the Nuggets have continued to win. Jamal Murray returned to action on Thursday against Cleveland after missing six games due to inflammation in his right knee. In the defeat against the Grizzlies, he scored eight points in 25 minutes.

Aaron Gordon’s health is a concern for Denver. Due to a left rib injury, he has missed five games in a row and probably won’t play against the Clippers. Following the loss on Saturday night, coach Michael Malone stated that there is no set timetable for his return. Malone stated that on Sunday, he would discuss Gordon’s availability with the team trainers.

NBA Preview: Minnesota Timberwolves (31-31) at Golden State Warriors (30-30)

0

When the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors meet in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon, they will face off against two teams that are both below.500 and badly in need of a winning streak.

Following their split earlier this season at Minnesota, the Western Conference playoff contenders will play one more time in Golden State.

The most recent of those encounters took place earlier this month. In overtime, the Timberwolves stepped up their defense and prevented the Warriors from making a single 3-point shot on five attempts, allowing them to win 119-114 with just four points in total.

In a 116-101 victory over the Houston Rockets on Friday night at home, Golden State turned up the offensive pressure from long range with a season-high 26 3-pointers, one shy of the NBA record.

Without Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, or Draymond Green, the Warriors’ Klay Thompson delivered in just his second consecutive game of the season. In 17 attempts, Thompson made 12 3-pointers to set a new NBA record for made 3-pointers. He missed by only two.

In November, the Warriors defeated Minnesota 137-114, and Thompson scored 21 points while shooting 5-for-8 from three-point range. Curry, Wiggins, and Green scored 61 points each for Golden State in that game.

Green may be with Thompson this time around because the veteran took Friday off to rest a bruised knee. However, Curry’s knee injury will keep him out for at least another week, and Wiggins’ return to the team is unknown due to personal reasons.

The Timberwolves missed an opportunity when they suffered consecutive home losses to the Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets at home on each end of the All-Star break, while the Warriors attempt to build on Friday’s victory with four more games at home in the next six days.

In the Timberwolves’ 121-113 defeat to the Hornets on Friday, Mike Conley scored 15 points, his most in four games for the team. The seasoned point guard became more familiar with his new teammates, which may have been more significant than anything else.

Following their stop in San Francisco, the Timberwolves will play four Western Conference contenders in California, including the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles teams. However, they do so without Karl-Anthony Towns, who has been sidelined for 41 of the team’s previous games due to a calf injury.

Chris Finch, the head coach of Minnesota, believes that Towns is close to returning, but that may not happen until the Timberwolves play the Philadelphia 76ers at home on March 7. As a result, on March 26, the Warriors would face him in their final matchup.
